Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 6th)

As the world outside starts to get slightly chillier with every day that passes, team Nintendo Life has more reason than ever to remain safely indoors with our favourite games. Once again, we’ve shared our plans for the weekend – from co-op adventures to fantasy RPGS – and would love for you to join in via our poll and comments sections below. Enjoy!

Gavin Lane, contributing writer

I’ve got friends coming over on Saturday and I’m busting to crack out the new Surf ‘n’ Turf DLC for Overcooked 2. Assuming we’re still friends afterwards, we’ll also disarm some bombs in Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.

Sunday I’ll be trekking the countryside in a last-ditch attempt to hatch a Tauros, Farfetch’d or Kangaskhan from a 7km egg in Pokémon Go. No dice so far, and the event ends on Monday.

I was also lucky enough to take delivery of a lovely new TV recently. Although it’s got 2160 Ps and OLEDs (and is even rumoured to make a passable bacon sandwich), I was afraid the ol’ Switch might look a bit dog-eared blown up to 55 inches. However, I squeezed in 5 minutes with Breath of the Wild and – boy-oh-boy – it looks goooood. So, I’ll be cycling through things like Super Mario Odyssey and Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap to see how they hold up on a 4K screen.

Liam Doolan, news reporter

I recently bought a third-party wired pro controller to use with my Nintendo Switch. It’s made by PDP and is rather impressive considering the price I paid for it. As a result of my recent purchase, this weekend I’ll be training hard in Dragon Ball FighterZ; A fighting game seems like the perfect title to test out a new controller’s limitations. When I’m not sparring in DBFZ, I’ll probably be putting my platform skills to the test in Mega Man 11 and playing some Rocket League and Splatoon 2 on the side.

Ryan Craddock, staff writer

My free time for gaming this weekend looks like it might be pretty limited, but I do have some things lined up for the moment I’m free. After recently beating every level and collecting every star in Overcooked 2, my partner and I will be jumping right into the newly-released Surf ‘n’ Turf DLC to get back into those horrible – but also lovely – kitchens. I’ve been hearing that the new fourth-star addition is really tough, too, so we’ll no doubt end up getting annoyed with life in the best possible way while trying to complete those.

I also decided to finally go ahead and buy a copy of Death Squared. I haven’t started it up yet, but the co-op puzzle level design looks like it’ll be the perfect thing for winding down each evening and I can’t wait to get stuck in.

Glen Fox, guides editor

I’ve recently got hopelessly addicted to Guild Wars 2 again so I’ve neglected my Switch a bit, but I’m still slowly working my way through Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It’s kind of shameful to admit, but I spend most of my time playing it wishing I was playing Baten Kaitos instead. There are some subtle similarities in the world design that just get me reminiscing. Though I doubt it ever actually will happen, I really do hope that Monolith returns to that franchise some day. I wouldn’t complain if they worked on a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 or remaster of the previous two entries, but I just can’t escape the feeling that it pales in comparison to Baten Kaitos. The franchise was just so unique – card-based battling system, an incredibly varied world, and the fact you were actually a character in the game. Xenoblade just kind of feels generic in comparison, though perhaps I’m being harsh.

Between those two massive games, I’m also ducking into Paladins when I get the chance. Still can’t get enough of it, and I really appreciate that the new event isn’t a separate game mode entirely like Dragon’s Call was. I just wasn’t a fan of that mode at all so the entire event passed me by. Ah well.

Dom Reseigh-Lincoln, reviewer

Having spent the last week exhaustively playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, I’m in need of a gaming palette cleanser. Recently I’ve really been getting into the Disgaea series and Disgaea 5 Complete on Switch is proving to be an all-too-easy time sink for this hard-working dood. I’ll also be playing more Splatoon 2 with my eldest. By that I, of course, mean watching him play that game considerably better than I ever could. Couldn’t be more proud.

Richard Atkinson, contributing writer

Having been out of the gaming weekend loop for a few weeks – sunning it up in Gran Canaria and trawling through the Nintendo delights at EGX, which has taken its toll – this weekend I can finally put my feet up and play some of my own games. Putting it to Twitter, and asking my followers what new indie game I should play, it was Hollow Knight that won the majority of votes. With only being a measly 2 hours in, I think it’s time to sit down and have a solid few hours exploring the wonders that lie beneath Dirtmouth. I’m loving it so far – even though it’s a tad on the difficult side – and I can’t wait to get stuck in again. Splatoon 2 is also on the cards as it really is the gift that keeps on giving, especially as my appetite for the game is continuing to grumble given the new(ish) announcement of the Spirit Bomb… err, I mean, ‘Booyah Bomb’, which is already creating colourful chaos in every battle.

Oh, and there’s no party like a Super Mario Party! Watching my delivery tracking status like a hungry hawk and cheering it on until it got posted through my letterbox, a few members of my overly-competitive family and friends are bundling together to test out what the game has to offer tonight. If it’s anything like what it seems in the rave reviews its receiving, it’s going to be a party well worth going to.

Alan Lopez, contributing writer

Here’s what I’m not playing this weekend: Super Mario Party.

I am not going to invite over loved ones – better spoken: “Yoshi imposters” – to argue over why I am the one, true Yoshi. I will not need to exhale the weight of the world after I roll a stupid “2” and end up going last – like always. This weekend I am not going to have inconsequential turns after everyone else has already scooted so, so far up the board, miles away from my pointless Koopa body. I’m just not doing that.

Not that it needs to be said, but I’m not playing Super Mario Party this weekend because I won’t destroy my “pals” at a game of skill, as I always have, as I always will, just to watch some big, worthless smile on their faces when they land on the “Take Everything Away From Alan” space. Why do they even have a “Take Everything Away From Alan” space?

And also, five stars for pressing “R” the most? And this girl over here, 500 coins for landing on the most red spaces? The very thing you’re supposed to avoid? Can we not, Bowser? I will not be playing Super Mario Party this weekend.

[Are you okay, Alan? We worry about you… –Ed.]

Gonçalo Lopes, contributing writer

I’m planning on spending the weekend doing pretty much what I have been doing every other day of the week when free time allows it: becoming the ultimate warrior in Dragon Ball FighterZ, following the heroic exploits of Squad E in Valkyria Chronicles 4 (a game that just keeps on delivering!) and slowly but surely raising community level (it is not as boring as it sounds) in Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country.

Hopefully I can gather a few of my least favourite friends this weekend so we can end our friendships over the latest Super Mario Party iteration. Make no mistake though, the coveted ‘Shiryu Game of the Week Award’ (yes, its a thing from now on) goes to none other than the utterly excellent Jettomero: Hero of the Universe. Go grab that bad boy off the eShop right now because, as usual, mankind needs saving.

Nintendo Switch Version Of Paladins Is Adding Gyro Controls Next Month

Since its release on the Switch eShop, Paladins has provided players with a fun free-to-play team-based experience. Earlier this week, Hi-Rez Studios and Evil Mojo Games released update 1.6 – adding in the undead pirate champion Captain Admiral, the new Onslaught map and multiple skins.

In the latest episode of Nintendo Minute, hosted by Kit and Krysta, the community specialist at Evil Mojo Games revealed gyro support would be added to the Switch version of the game next month.

This announcement follows the community’s ongoing requests for motion controller support earlier this year on the game’s subreddit. At the time, the Hi-Rez Executive Producer said the team was working on implementing this method of controller support into the Switch version of the game, but wasn’t entirely sure if they would be able to get it to work.

Have you played the new Paladins update yet? Are you looking forward to motion controls being added to the game next month? Have you even downloaded the game from the eShop? Tell us below.

Reggie Says Nintendo Competes For Consumer Time, Not Concerned About Direct Competition

During his appearance on stage at Seattle’s Geekwire Summit earlier this week, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said the company’s approach was to do things differently. He reinforced this point by referencing the unique voice chat system on the Switch and how it could be used on the go.

When asked if he considered Xbox and PlayStation as a competitor to the Switch, Reggie said Nintendo was focused on the bigger picture:

My competitive set is much bigger than my direct competitors in Sony and Microsoft. I compete for time. When I do that, I have to be creative and innovative in order to win that battle.

Reggie went on to explain how Nintendo was actually competing for the entertainment time in consumers’ lives:

That time you spend surfing the Web, watching a movie, watching a telecast of a conference: that’s all entertainment time we’re competing for.

What do you think about Reggie’s comments? Are you pleased to hear Nintendo is not concerned about the competition? Or do you think it should try and appeal to the same market as Sony and Microsoft more often? Tell us below.

Alwa’s Awakening First Week Switch eShop Sales Outperform Launch Month On Steam

The demand for indie titles on the Switch continues. Elden Pixels has revealed its 8-bit adventure Alwa’s Awakening has had an incredibly strong launch week on Nintendo’s eShop. According to the developer, it has sold as much in its first week on Switch as it did in its entire launch month on Steam last year. No exact figures were provided. The head of the small indie studio also mentioned how Steam sales in 2018 had outperformed the previous year, citing discounts as the main reason.

This, of course, isn’t the first time we’ve heard about strong indie sales on the Switch. Not long ago, the developer behind Salt And Sanctuary revealed the game had sold “super well” in its first week on the eShop – with numbers rivalling the first week of Steam sales. Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King also had higher sales numbers on the Switch compared to Valve’s digital service. In the past, other games including Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Hollow Knight and Death Squared have also sold exceptionally well since releasing on the Switch eShop.

Did you download Alwa’s Awakening from the Switch eShop in its first week? Do you buy most of your indie games on the Nintendo Switch? Tell us below.

Capcom Confirms That Monster Hunter’s Live-Action Movie Adaptation Is Definitely Going Ahead

The Monster Hunter series will be receiving a live-action movie adaptation, Capcom has confirmed.

The idea of a Monster Hunter movie taking shape in one way or another has actually been circulating for some time now; back in 2012, British director and producer Paul W.S. Anderson revealed that a film conversion was being planned, and just a couple of years ago he confirmed that talks were still ongoing. Now, Capcom has announced that the movie has indeed been slated for production, and has even offered up some details on its plot and the people involved.

Firstly, Paul W. S. Anderson – who just so happens to be the man behind the Resident Evil film series, too – is acting as both writer and director. Constantin Film will be the studio behind the movie’s production (which has previously released the likes of Asphaltgorillas and Sauerkraut Koma), while Japanese company Toho will distribute the film in Japan.

Unsurprisingly, the film will be based on the Monster Hunter game franchise, centring around “two protagonists who come from different worlds and must cooperate in fighting monsters in order to survive.” At the moment, any particular timeframe for when the movie will begin recording is unknown.

While video game movie tie-ins have a history of generating generally negative responses from viewers and critics, Anderson’s Resident Evil films stand among the few that have gone on to be commercial successes.

Are you intrigued by the potential of a Monster Hunter movie? Would you watch it? Let us know with a comment below.

Here’s How To Get Your Hands On Those Lovely Splatoon 2 Halloween Outfits

Just a couple of days ago, we shared the news that Splatoon 2 is about to play host to a worldwide, Halloween-themed Splatfest, with all sorts of amazing decorations and outfits playing their part in proceedings. Well, you can now get your hands on those lovely looking outfits, so read on and grab them for yourself.

All you have to do is head on over to the News section of your Switch (the icon on the very left at the bottom of the home screen). From here, you’ll need to make sure you’re following the Splatoon-centric news channel – in Europe, this channel is referred to as the ‘Squid Research Lab Bulletin’; in the Americas, it’s called the ‘Squid Research Lab Report’. Review: Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams – Owltimate Edition – Still A Real Hoot Five Years On

Five years on from its original release on Wii U, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is doing the fashionable thing and making the jump to Nintendo Switch. Now with a fancy new Owltimate Edition tagline and some extra content, this 2.5D platformer is looking to bring its creative brand of leaping and running to another generation of Nintendo fans. But is this another soulless port of an ‘old’ game or an attempt to revitalise a piece of software and make it relevant once more?

Successfully Kickstarted – and then released on Nintendo’s previous hardware in 2013 – the original version was made as a spiritual successor to the infamous Super Mario Bros. clone The Great Giana Sisters (which launched on the Commodore 64 in 1987) and a sequel of sorts to 2009’s Giana Sisters DS. Rather than just rolling up a modern reimagining of the same mechanics, German studio Black Forest Games took the basic platforming premise and added in a new ‘phasing’ feature that transforms the world around you at the touch of a button.

With your sister Maria is abducted by a nefarious dragon called the Gurglewocky, it’s up to you – in the diminutive shoes of her sibling Giana – to leap into the Dream World and rescue her from the winged beast. Giana also happens to possess two very distinct personalities, and each not only changes how she looks but completely transforms the levels you’re exploring. When she’s ‘Cute’, our heroine sports blonde hair and jaunts around levels bright with sunshine, with colourful mushroom houses and twinkling oceans to boot.

One moment you’re bounding through a verdant forest, like something straight out of The Smurfs, then you hit ‘ZR’ or ‘ZL’ and instantly turn that level into a nightmarish version of itself as Giana goes ‘Punk’. Houses become ruins, trees become skeletons and friendly boats become terrifying galleons that loom ominously in the background. Even the soundtrack changes, moving from a sickly sweet score to a full-on metal showcase (courtesy of Swedish outfit Machinae Supremacy). These changes are instantaneous, with scenery shrinking and warping without a moment’s delay, but it does more than just inform the game’s incredibly pretty 2.5D aesthetic.

Switching between Punk and Cute will affect a huge array of platforming elements, ranging from platforms that rise and fall depending on your current form to balloons that change colour and behaviour. Even enemies transform as you switch, with Angry Birds-esque avians becoming flying demons to slow pufferfish that morph into much faster jellyfish. Water-based areas will fill and empty as you jump between either state, enabling you to reach new areas as you progress.

Black Forest Games (which was formed out of the same studio that made the previous entry on DS) doesn’t stop there, giving you an impressive selection of abilities beyond mere jumps. You can hold ‘X’ to leap into the air and spin, which enables you to hover across gaps or fall in a certain direction in order to collect gems. You can press ‘Y’ to dash, which can be used to kill enemies, smash blocks and ricochet you between walls (perfect for dashing up a vertical corridor, for instance).

It’s just the right amount of agency that – when paired with the clever phase-changing mechanic – makes exploring every nook and cranny of its 40 levels a real treat. Since the twirl move is tied to Giana’s Cute side (and the dash to her Punk persona) you also have to juggle the fact these moves also cause the level to phase, adding another variable to consider when you’re navigating crumbling platforms, gates and enemy variants.

While the power to switch between two different versions of the same environment has been replicated many times since, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams – Owltimate Edition is still as fresh and exciting to play as it was on Wii U. The addition of all the game’s DLC – including all the Halloween and Christmas-themed levels released over the years – is a welcome inclusion, as are the new animated cutscenes which play out between each level; all of this gives the package a welcome extra polish. You even get some new music tracks as well, although the Cute ones by the normally-faultless composer Chris Hülsbeck are so corny we kind of wish he hadn’t. And when you sprinkle in all those extra modes – including Score and Time Attack variants and some Hardcore settings for you masochists out there – there’s plenty of replay value should you fall for its charms.

Conclusion

Five years on, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is still the same creative and colourful platformer it was on Wii U, only now with a few extra levels and some much-needed additional polish. While its phase-changing gimmick isn’t as special or unique anymore – the likes of Guacamelee and co have riffed and improved on the concept in the years since – there’s still plenty to enjoy here. With 40 levels to beat, plenty of challenging boss fights and a wealth of modes, you get plenty of bang for your buck – even if the soundtrack can be rather hit and miss.
