Thanks for your participation in the Crackdown 3 Wrecking Zone Technical Test!

Hello Xbox Insiders!

The Xbox Insider Program and the Crackdown team would like to thank you for your help with the Wrecking Zone Technical Test. There are a lot of amazing games you can spend time playing, and we are grateful many of you chose to spend some time helping us further prepare Crackdown 3™ for its release!

Your involvement in this Technical Test has been vital to the progression of Crackdown 3™. All your feedback and the data we received will be reviewed and put to good use – in some cases it already has! Below you will find a high-level list of issues we got a jump on fixing thanks to you.

  • HDR bugs: The game will no longer occasionally show up as a big black void on 4K HDR screens.
  • Multiple network errors: You helped us identify various network errors, and we were able to fix many for launch.
  • Matchmaking and stability improvements: This one is fairly obvious since it WAS a server test after all, but we got a ton of great info from you.
  • Party Support: We heard you, and are pleased to be adding party support in a future update! We will need your help testing this, so please watch for an announcement in the Xbox Insider Hub and on social media letting you know it’s time to update and check out the new feature.

Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you in the Wrecking Zone. Play Crackdown 3™  on Xbox Game Pass today!

How Unexplored: Unlocked Edition Generates a Startling Amount of Surprising Dungeons

When I came across an area in Unexplored that consisted entirely of nicely decorated floating rooms all connected by teleporters, I knew we had achieved our goal – we had created a game that could surprise even us, the developer, with the imaginative and interesting levels that our dungeon generation tech could produce.

As you may have guessed, Unexplored’s most unique feature is its content generator. As a team we worked hard to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with generated levels. A challenge both technologically and design-wise.

So, how did we tackle this?

First, every floor you encounter in Unexplored’s procedurally-generated Dungeon of Doom has a couple of themes running at the same time. Themes such as water, lava, teleporters, and chasms. Some of those themes are obvious, others are opaque and rare.

The trick is to have themes work together to create unique gameplay experiences. A floor running a lava and water theme, for example, features boiling water. Or a level combining chasms, decorated rooms, and teleporters may end up, well, featuring nothing more than those floating rooms, interconnected by teleporters.

We created nine main themes and dozens more smaller ones. By having so many different themes, the possible combinations are near-endless. Every floor you encounter becomes a game in itself – you must discover what’s going on and how the dungeon is trying to kill you this time. Or, sometimes, how it’s trying to help you.

In order to beat Unexplored, you must pay attention. The content generation might be ‘random’, but it is still readable to a certain extent. Once you’ve descended into the dungeon a couple of times you will start picking up on the themes I’ve mentioned. You will know when and where to look for secrets, when a particular room is a trap, and when a whole floor might be best avoided altogether. In the true tradition of roguelike games, playing Unexplored is as much about developing smart strategies as it is about building your sword-fighting skills.

As a designer, I really love the effect content generation has on gameplay. If you beat Unexplored, that victory is truly yours. There’s no save game to help you after you die, you can’t memorize levels. It’s so much more than simply jumping through all the hoops the designers put in front of you.

After finishing the base game, we started to conduct some more extreme experiments with our content generator. The results of those experiments ended up as three pieces of DLC (already included in the Unexplored: Unlocked Edition for Xbox One under Special Runs in the main menu).

Mithril Run

The overall structure of the first Special Run remains the same every time, but each floor is still generated on the spot. Think of it like this: you’ve heard rumours of what to expect in this dungeon, aptly named The Mines of Moryondor, but you’re never quite sure of exactly what is going to happen. To beat Mithril Run you really, really need to strategize and plan ahead.

Ripley Run

More focused on action gameplay, Ripley Run gives you a magical, repeater crossbow and a whole bunch of targets to shoot at. You’ll still need to plan carefully, though, as you’ll never have enough arrows, and being able to locate additional resources is key to playing this mode.

The Dark Ritual

In contrast, The Dark Ritual is one giant, nested puzzle, where we took Unexplored’s ability to generate floor-spanning puzzles to the extreme. You still have plenty of scary monsters to deal with, as befits The Dark Ritual’s Cthulhu-inspired theme.

Desolate Mode

By tweaking the content generator, we created vastly different gameplay experiences. My personal favourite is yet another different play style: Desolate Mode. It’s not a Special Run as such, it’s a special kind of difficulty setting.

Desolate Mode makes the levels almost deserted: very few enemies and equally few magic and healing items. This mode features long stretches of silent exploration that suddenly burst into frantic moments of life-threatening combat. Yet another vastly different take on the classic dungeon delving experience.

We can’t wait for you to play Unexplored: Unlocked Edition on Xbox One and to be surprised over and over again. Even now, after many years of development, the game still throws curve balls that even I never imagined.

Unexplored: Unlocked Edition is available now for Xbox One and can be purchased from the Microsoft Store.

Windows Gaming and more State of Decay slots now available!

Thank you to everyone who signed up for the State of Decay flight on version 18334. We received an overwhelming response to the flight and are very grateful for your support!

Today, in addition to State of Decay we also have some exciting news to share about flighting additional Windows Gaming features. In the coming days / weeks / months – you will find us using this flight ring to give you a preview of the latest and greatest things we are building for our gaming audience.

To get everything this ring has to offer, we would recommend that you are on Windows 10 version 18329 or higher. But there is something even for those of you who are on older versions of Windows 10 (17763).

REMINDER: BattlEye software (used by Fortnite, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and other popular games) does not work correctly with builds flighted to the Windows Insider Fast ring since December. If you have a machine that is not already enrolled in Windows Insider Fast, and you play games that use BattlEye software, we recommend you do not join Windows Insider Fast on that personal computer. We are working closely with BattlEye and individual games are being updated with new BattlEye software to make sure they work properly with new Windows builds.

Here is a quick overview of the instructions to join the ring:

  1. If you have an Xbox Live Gamertag (you most likely have one already if you are reading this!), go to step 2 below. If you don’t have a Gamertag, use your Microsoft Account (MSA) to log into https://account.xbox.com and create an Xbox account. Once completed, you will see your Gamertag in the top right of the page.
  2. Install the Xbox Insider Hub app on the PC you’ll be flighting on (link opens in Store app).
  3. Sign in to the Xbox Insider Hub with your Gamertag.
  4. Select Insider Content in the upper left
  5. Select Windows Gaming
  6. If you are on 18329 or higher, you will be automatically enrolled into Game bar. You can then manually enroll into the flight for State of Decay: Year One
  7. If you are on 17763, you will be automatically enrolled only into the Game bar flight

For details on how to get the latest version of Windows, scroll down to the bottom of this post. Now, the fun part!

State of Decay: Year One (Windows 10 version 18329 or higher)

Try out State of Decay on a new version of Windows

We’re pleased to announce that we have a new Windows version (18342) with fixes and improvements that we can’t wait to have folks try out!

  • If you have already tried State of Decay and everything worked: we’d appreciate you uninstalling State of Decay and then trying the install again, to make sure everything works.
  • If you have already tried State of Decay and something didn’t work: please try again and see if your issue has been addressed. If not, it would help us a lot if you let us know using the Feedback Hub in Windows (instructions). Even if you already sent feedback on the issue before, it’s very helpful to know that it’s still happening on a new version of Windows.
  • If you were not able to get a slot for State of Decay: we’ve opened up more slots now, so please try again

If you see any problems downloading or installing the game, or if important functionality like game saving isn’t working, please be sure to use the Feedback Hub to tell us. And thank you again for helping us find any issues!

Game bar (Windows 10 version 17763 or higher)

Early access to new Game bar features

By joining this program, you will get access to the newest features and fixes of Game bar before the general public.

In this early preview for Game bar, you will get:

  • The new controller battery UI—just connect an Xbox One controller and then hit Nexus/Xenon or Win+G to bring up Game bar! This was the top ask for Game bar at Xbox Ideas, and we’re excited to deliver it!
  • A new Settings layout to make it easier to find your settings within Game bar
  • Other fixes and polish to our experiences around Game capturing and Sharing to Twitter

In the coming weeks you will be the first to receive the latest and greatest updates for the Game bar.

Instructions on how to get the latest version of Windows

  1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Insider program to enroll in the Windows Insider Fast flight ring (Need more information? Check out the details on the Windows Insider Program)
  2. Restart your machine when prompted.
  3. Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & Security and click “Check for Updates”. You will be updated to 18342 or later.

Riot: Civil Unrest is Available Now on Xbox One

Riot’s story began with Leonard Menchiari who experienced the rioting first-hand in Italy during the NoTav protests, (the NoTav protests opposed the building of a high-speed railway from Turin in Italy, to Lyon in France). Protestors were opposed to the destruction of the landscape, the potential pollution and the overall cost of this project. Leonard spoke with both protestors and police, discovering what drove people to take a stand and how officers empathized (and in some cases agreed), with protestors but had to maintain order and safety. Leonard decided to use his background in filmmaking and love of video games to tell these stories through an interactive experience and Riot: Civil Unrest was born.

We’re all incredibly proud of all the work that has gone into Riot and we’re particularly proud of the jaw-dropping pixel-art. One of the major challenges we faced was to make the crowd look genuine; many games that feature crowds have a lot of identical characters repeated over and over again. We wanted to create a genuine crowd of unique individuals. To achieve this, the team came up with a clever algorithm which chose from the vast range of trousers, tops and accessory options to create a 100% unique crowd of people. Not only do our crowds look genuine but their movement is excellent too. Using clever AI, our developers made it so that instead of moving as blocks they move in a far more fluid way. Individuals use space as real people would, filling gaps as they appear and resisting movement when it is blocked. They can swarm around an objective or flee from danger.

Sound is another area that had an incredible amount of work put into it. Our sound designer, Michele Postpischi, (who lives near the NoTav valley), went to impressive lengths to capture the realism and chaos Riot wanted to convey. Michele would travel to abandoned and disused buildings and record the sounds of things being broken, such as a pane of glass being struck with a piece of 2×4.

By their very nature, riots are an emotive subject. That is why we try to be extremely careful in our portrayal of these stories. We are aware that people’s opinions will differ, so we decided to take a neutral and non-political stance. Although we set up each of Riot’s scenarios, we always advise the user to research these subjects themselves and encourage them to form their own opinion. Riot has four main campaigns to play through and understand; NoTav (Italy), Indignados (Spain), the Arab Spring (Egypt) and Keratea (Greece). We’ve also included over thirty single scenarios which include the Oakland shooting riots, as well as the Paris and London riots.

I along with my team genuinely hope you enjoy the experience Riot: Civil Unrest has to offer, we’ve worked on this for some time and are absolutely amazed at the level of love shown for this title. If I were to leave you with one tip it would be to consider your strategy wisely. Aggressive tactics may yield results early on but may harm you in the long run; if you’re aggressive, aggression may be expected from you next time, making success more difficult to achieve. Or public opinion could turn on you, giving your opponents a heightened sense of alertness.
