Gaming & Disability Community Reception 2019 Recap

It’s March in the gaming industry and that means we have come to another Game Developer’s Conference (GDC). We have already kicked off the week with the 2nd annual Gaming & Disability Community Reception! Hosted in partnership with Games Accessibility Conference, a one day series of talks on accessible game design from the IGDA Gaming Accessibility Special Interest Group, the crowd was bigger than ever with over 250 attendees and the conversations about how to bring gaming to more players through inclusive design were inspiring.

GDC 2019 Gaming for Everyone

GDC 2019 Gaming for Everyone

Held this year at the Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco, an innovative art and technology experience for children ages 2-12 and their families, is located just steps away from the Moscone Convention Center and GDC 2019. A few of the guests and topics that were shared at this year’s event were “Making Forza More Accessible” from Turn 10 Design Director Jon Knowles, “More Inclusive Communication With PlayFab Party” from PlayFab Program Manager Chris Palmer, and “The Xbox Adaptive Controller Story – GAconf Edition” from Microsoft Devices Inclusive Lead Bryce Johnson.

GDC 2019 Gaming for Everyone

GDC 2019 Gaming for Everyone

One of the missions of IGDA is to raise awareness that disability is a mismatch between a person and their environment, resulting in barriers performing day-to-day tasks, including gaming. Accessibility is a means to avoiding those unnecessary barriers, that often means to reinforce how information is communicated, and offering players some flexibility, both of which often translate into a better experience for all players.

GDC 2019 Gaming for Everyone

Understanding and implementation of these principles has been growing at an exponential rate, with every year seeing many more developers making their first forays into the field and may more consolidating and building upon past experiences — this has made GDC 2019 a perfect opportunity to take stock and exchange experiences and expertise.

GDC 2019 Gaming for Everyone

GDC 2019 Gaming for Everyone

At Xbox, we believe that when everybody plays, we all win and we were proud to continue this new tradition of bringing together the community of people who work to make that a reality for players everywhere, and we look forward to the next time we’re able to share ideas to make gaming a better place for everyone.

Play Overwatch’s Newest Hero Today on Xbox One

Suit up as Overwatch’s 30th hero, Baptiste, a versatile combat medic who’s not afraid to dole out a few bullets between bandages—available to play starting today.

Jean-Baptiste Augustin was one of millions of children orphaned by the Omnic Crisis, the rebellion of robots against their human creators that plunged the planet into a catastrophic war. The devastation he witnessed compelled Baptiste to enlist as a special operative and combat medic in the Caribbean Coalition. He joined for one purpose: to help. But when his service was complete, the demand for his unique skill set dwindled. So, when the Talon mercenary group made him an offer, he accepted.

At first, working for Talon suited him; the money was good, and the missions went smoothly. But over time, the assignments became more brutal, and soon his actions were harming the civilian population. Realizing that his behavior no longer matched his beliefs, Baptiste left Talon behind, vowing to work toward making the world a better place—healing where he could, and fighting when he must.

Talon was not willing to simply let Baptiste make a clean break. Baptiste was now a liability, and the organization took radical measures to silence him. Talon operatives—including some former comrades who fought alongside Baptiste—attempted to apprehend or eliminate him to no success. Baptiste knows he cannot undo his past, so he focuses on a new purpose: making a difference.

In battle, Baptiste splits his time between healing his allies and dealing damage. His primary weapon, the Biotic Launcher, fires a three-round burst, eliminating threats and giving teammates room to maneuver. The Biotic Launcher also lobs a healing projectile, which heals allies near the point of impact, allowing them to dive back into the fray.

Baptiste’s Exo Boots allow him to take the high ground. This fancy footwear charges while he’s crouched and launches him into the air when activated, giving Baptiste the ability to escape an intense battle, find a vantage point to support his allies, or get a better shot at his enemies.

Assaulting the objective can sometimes be perilous. When teammates are pinned down or taking damage, activating Baptiste’s Regenerative Burst ability triggers a healing surge, restoring health to allies within the affected area.

Keeping teammates in the fight is Baptiste’s primary objective, and Immorality Field lets him do just that. Tossing the field generator into a battle will prevent allied health from dropping below a certain threshold as long as they remain within the protected area—even while enemies continue to try to deal damage.

Light them up! When Baptiste’s ultimate ability is charged, he can deploy the Amplification Matrix, a field that Baptiste and his allies can shoot through to amplify any damage and healing effects that passes through it.

Combined, all of these experimental devices and weaponry give this battle-hardened soldier a unique support role on the battlefield, spending time as both a healer and damage dealer. We’re calling all prospective agents from across the Xbox community to leap in-game and give Baptiste a go.

You can learn more about Overwatch and Baptiste—and check out his animated origin story—at PlayOverwatch.com, or you can just head into the game right now to join the battle on Xbox One. The world could always use more heroes.

Sharpen Your Cues and Get Ready for Snooker 19, Launching April 19 on Xbox One

Can you believe it’s been almost a decade since there was an official World Snooker game? Games have advanced a lot in that time and we’ve been itching to bring snooker back for this generation, harnessing the full power of Xbox One and enhanced for Xbox One X to make it bigger and better than ever!

We’re really proud to be bringing snooker back to the fans this year with Snooker 19 and today I have the honour of sharing the the very first gameplay trailer with you, which shows a taste of what you can expect from the sport we absolutely love when the game launches later this Spring.

Snooker 19

Snooker 19

We’ve been working on Snooker 19 in close partnership and collaboration with the sport’s officiating body; World Snooker. All the official tournaments, venues and sponsors feature, and best of all the development team at Lab42 have 3D scanned and recreated all 128 professional players to compete as or against. That’s never been achieved before! Take to the table as your favourite pro player including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, and world number one Mark Selby, or take your shot as a hall of fame legend such as Jimmy White or Peter Ebdon.

The attention to detail in Snooker 19 is breathtaking, and Lab42 have worked painstakingly to create a true-to-life simulation of the sport. To create the Star Xingpai tournament tables that you will play on at every official World Snooker event, we deconstructed a real life table and re-modeled it using Unreal engine to ensure the level of incredible detail that we are striving for. Even the baize was modelled using real cloth provided by World Snooker and all arenas were mapped using official floorplans and reference images.

Snooker 19

Snooker 19

At the core of the game is the true-to-life ball physics engine we’ve built from the ground up to play, swerve, top and back-spin and canons to an astonishing degree or real-world accuracy, resulting in relentlessly satisfying cue ball control for potting and positional play. There are four different aiming aid settings for this, meaning that this simulation is accessible to everyone from total novice to intense expert, and of course that’s just the core.

Wrapped around the core simulation are three variants of snooker: Traditional, Six Red (punchier, less tactical), and Shoot Out (fast, intense games against the clock). We also have two different career modes: Pro Season, where you start a career as any established pro including the superstars, and Rising Star where you take the role of a up and coming player to rise up the rankings. Both follow the real World Snooker calendar, and so do online tournaments. You can also play quick VS matches, online and offline, matchmaking with players based on your skill or creating your own events with your friends. All modes also reward you with personalisation and customisation options for your pro, including outfits and cues.

Snooker 19

Snooker 19

We’ve been playing a lot of Snooker 19 in the studio and I’m really proud of how it’s coming together as we get ready to release it to the world. I can’t wait for you to get to play it yourself when it launches this Spring on Xbox One. In the meantime, keep up to speed with all the latest news and developments as they happen at snooker19.com and over on Twitter.

Help Us Rename “Feature Friday” via the Xbox Idea Hub

Here in the Xbox Insider section of the Wire, we make a point of calling out Xbox Insider participation as an important part of successfully launching features, updates, and games on Xbox and PC.  Xbox Ideas is a part of this success, enabling our community to make contributions that improve all aspects of the Xbox experience by sharing their ideas.  In the spirit of building a better Xbox experience together, we’re inviting you to help test an additional space for Xbox Idea Drives.

We’ve recently created a space within the r/XboxInsiders subreddit called the Xbox Idea Hub.  The Xbox Idea Hub is a standalone page housed within the Xbox Insider Subreddit where we can offer Idea Drives similar to what you may have seen previously on Xbox Ideas. Many users of the existing Xbox Ideas platform have shared feedback that they’d like to see some aspects of our Idea Drives changed, and we believe the Xbox Insider Subreddit can offer those desired changes, including:

  • No-wait moderation: When you post your idea, it shows up immediately
  • In-thread discussion: Within a comment thread, you can help develop any idea to its fullest potential
  • Better voting and sorting options: More control over how topics show up for you

As a member of the Xbox Insider Program, we’d like you to lead the way by testing this site before we expand it to the broader Xbox community.  To get started, check out the new Xbox Idea Hub.  Then, contribute to our first Idea Drive in this space – it’s focused on renaming “Feature Friday,” like we said in the title. (Note: If you’re a regular reader of the subreddit, you probably already know about “Feature Friday.” If not, you can read about it in the Idea Drive post and then give us your ideas.)

Once you’ve provided your ideas and upvoted the ones you like, please be sure to read the latest subreddit update post and leave your comments and feedback about the Xbox Idea Hub in the thread.

Thanks in advance, Xbox Insiders!  Your feedback here will help us as we prepare to share the Xbox Idea Hub with the world. Keep watching the blog here, or @XboxInsider on Twitter, for future announcements when we fully open the doors.

A Closer Look at the Future with Project xCloud

On today’s episode of Inside Xbox, we gave viewers their first real look at Project xCloud, a vision for game-streaming technology that will complement our console hardware and give gamers more choice in how and where they play. We’re developing Project xCloud not as a replacement for the video game console, but as a way to provide the same choice and versatility that lovers of music and movies enjoy today. We’re adding more ways to play Xbox games. We’re excited to share more about the technology in the coming months, including the first details of how and when you can help us to test it in real-world scenarios later this year.

Spatial Sound and the Wireless Display App are Changing the Game

As you might have heard, Xbox One currently supports Spatial Sound that’s specifically mixed for Dolby Atmos. During today’s show, we announced that the team is working to bring Spatial Sound to your whole Xbox One experience, regardless of whether it was specifically mixed for it. That includes all your games, movies, TV shows, and music content. Think as it as up-scaling for sound. To put it in simplest term: In the near future, all the content you experience through Xbox One is going to sound like it’s been mixed for Spatial Sound. We also announced that the team is in the process right now of rolling out the Wireless Display app, which is available in the Microsoft Store today. This app lets you project from your desktop or laptop PC or even your tablet onto the biggest and best screen in the house. Go check it out now!

DayZ Shambles Out of Xbox Game Preview

Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ has been a big hit on Xbox Game Preview, so we were happy to share on today’s episode that this intense RPG shooter will be coming out of XGP on March 27. Yes, you and your friends will be able to take on zombie hordes, as well as other players, in an attempt to stay alive. You’ll need to scavenge the world for weapons, food, water, weapons, and medicine, dealing with both zombies and competing players as you try to survive the outbreak. It’s one of the most intense experiences on Xbox One, and we’re excited for the full version to be released.

We hope you enjoyed the show, and we’ll see you next month!
