Paperbound Brawlers: A Seven-Year Story in Seven Paragraphs

Paperbound Brawlers is the culmination of a seven-year journey to release an Xbox game. Back in prehistoric times, there was a thing called the Xbox 360. This was a magical device. I played it nearly every day. And then Microsoft created this software called XNA that would allow indie developers to make games that ran on Xbox 360! I was so excited!

It was really cool to see something that I made in my bedroom running on my Xbox. This was 2013, so it wasn’t so common back then. But that was just a prototype with little stick figures and vector graphics. Game development takes a long time. There’s a lot to do. Initially, I had to do a lot of placeholder stuff. Recording metal sounds with a pizza cutter and beat boxing footsteps. Actually…some of that stuff made it into the final game. It has a nice charm to it.

Paperbound Brawlers

But I had to form a team, and I was lucky to find some awesome artists, a composer/sound designer, and various other folks to help with countless other things. I met some of the team at a local game developer meetup in San Diego (where I was living at the time)…students who were looking to break in–Josh and Lacey.

After his work on Paperbound Brawlers, Josh obtained a job at a AAA studio, so I’m really happy for him. Additionally, there were some old friends of mine who pitched in for certain areas. We also connected with some team members via www.indiedb.com. I actually held an audition for the music, which was and still is very weird for me. I didn’t feel like I was anybody important who should be holding an audition. I can’t believe how many fantastic composers there are out there. The person I ultimately chose lives in England, and years later, I actually went to visit him. It is a surreal experience to meet someone in person for the first time but feel like old friends.

Paperbound Brawlers

And then the game had to be built. There was
a physics engine to write–XNA didn’t have one built in, and I have always had
an interest in physics-based gameplay, hence the wacky gravity. And there was,
of course, designing the game, creating all the art and music, promoting,
playtesting, going to events, getting some character cameos from other games,
making fun GIFs, etc.

By the time things were close to ready, Xbox 360 was on its way out. Xbox One was the new hotness. And XNA didn’t run on Xbox One. It would be a massive undertaking to get things up and running on Xbox One. Meanwhile, bills called, and I had to take a break from development to earn a living. But we never gave up on the dream. Eventually, we were able to port it over to Unity, and the journey is complete.

We put a lot of game modes into Paperbound Brawlers. My favorite is Capture the Quill, but everyone has their favorite. Some really like Long Live the King. Gravity Ball is the most recent addition. And even the Classic Versus mode has a nice twist. I grew up playing Unreal Tournament, so I wanted to bring the concept of mutators into the game to give a lot of variations on how it’s played. You can tweak all the game rules as you like.

Paperbound Brawlers

I hope you enjoy the game. Invite over some friends. Shout a lot. Maybe even get a little bit sweaty. You can play solo or 2p coop, but I love competitive play. There’s a lot of magic in old-school competitive gaming in the same room.

Thanks for reading!

Paladins Season 3 Begins with New Champion Release, Community Battle Pass

Paladins had an exciting year in 2019 – we released four new champions, a variety of exciting Battle Passes, and a series of updates which brought more bug fixes and quality of life improvements than ever before. We declared 2019 the best year ever for Paladins, and we think we achieved our goal. But we’ve never been comfortable resting on our laurels. If 2019 was our best, we only had one choice for 2020 – make it an even better year for Paladins. With this goal in mind, we are launching Season 3 of Paladins with today’s update (available now free on Xbox One), which includes so many changes and improvements that we can confidently say that we’re kicking 2020 to be the best ever. Let’s dive in and see what’s in store for the new year!

We think you’ll agree that the most exciting part of our first patch of 2020, A Tigron’s Tale, is the introduction of our newest Champion: Tiberius. Nicknamed The Weapon’s Master, Tiberius wields two unique weapons against his enemies: his throwing chakrams, which will bounce off of floors, walls, and ceilings, and a mystical sword. Discovered in an ancient temple and forged in ages immemorable, Tiberius’ blade is more than just a weapon: it’s an ally. Tiberius can throw his blade at enemies, then recall it back to his hand. Selecting his “Tigron’s Fury” ability allows Tiberius to do even more damage with his sword, causing it to explode when recalled.

Paladins Season 3

Tiberius is a Tigron – a race of nomadic cat-people renowned for their agility and fighting prowess. In creating Tiberius, we spent a lot of time creating a Champion that moved like a feline. This is most evident in Tiberius’ ultimate ability – actually two abilities in one. After activating his Ultimate, players can launch his Striking Tigron attack, causing Tiberius to quickly dash forward, dealing damage to any enemies in his path. Activating his Whirling Blades attack launches Tiberius into the air, blocking all incoming damage with his whirling sword and dealing damage to nearby enemies when he lands. Players can mix and match these attacks when activating his Ultimate, triggering them a total of 5 times for a variety of exciting combos.

Paladins Season 3

It doesn’t matter how exciting our Champions are (and we hope you’ll agree when we say that Tiberius is one of our most exciting yet), Paladins wouldn’t be the game it is without its amazing community. To show our appreciation for our players, and to allow them to have direct input in some of our content for 2020, the skins for our very first Battle Pass this year are based on concepts submitted by our community members which were then voted on by our players. The Community Battle Pass features all new skins for some of our most popular Champions: Ska’drin Ash, Wukong Talus, Soul Briar Grover, and Dark Monarch Lian. These skins – and a Limited recolor of each – are part of our fist 2020 Battle Pass, which also features over 100 other rewards.

Last, but definitely not least, A Tigron’s Tale kicks off Season 3 for Paladins, which means a host of quality-of-life improvements, bug fixes, and balance changes. For example, character voice packs are now included for free with every skin purchase. We’ve also added even more free Crystals to our Battle Pass – beginning with the Community Battle Pass, even players earning rewards on our free track will earn more Crystals than ever before. Our list of bug fixes and balance changes are too exhaustive to list here, but head on over to here for a full list of changes you’ll find in this patch.

Whether you’re already a member of the Paladins community, or are just playing for the first time, we hope that you’ll join the rest of our community in Season 3. Our goal to make 2020 the best year ever for Paladins can only be achieved with the help of our amazing players (that’s you!).

A Rambler’s Guide to Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition, Coming to Xbox One January 28

Summary

  • A magical realist adventure game about a secret highway that runs through the caves beneath Kentucky.
  • Prepare for the release of Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition with our Rambler’s Guide below.
  • Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition comes to Xbox One January 28.

Kentucky Route Zero is a magical realist
adventure game about a secret highway that runs through the caves beneath
Kentucky. The three of us at Cardboard Computer have been working on this game
for almost 10 years, publishing episodes, free ‘interlude’ games, and other odd
objects (a play, a T.V. station, a hotline for secret tourism) as we go. Now,
we’re happy to say that the story is complete, and you can play the whole thing
from start to finish in Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition on Xbox
One, on January 28.

Whether this is your first trip on Route Zero or your last,
it’s only a few weeks away. So, we’ll help you prepare with our Rambler’s Guide
to Route Zero:

Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition

Gas Stations

We recommend you fill your tank somewhere on the surface
before heading underground. There are gas stations down there, too, but they seem
to move around from night to night. Equus Oils, right off Interstate 65, is a
good place to start your trip. While you’re there, be sure to say
“hello” to Joseph, who works the night shift; he’ll be able to get
you pointed in the right direction, more or less.

Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition

Caves and Rivers

The mysterious Route Zero runs through a twisty maze of
caves and rivers beneath Kentucky, the famous Mammoth Cave System. Dedicated
video game historians may note that Mammoth Cave is also the site of seminal
1976 text adventure game, Colossal Cave Adventure — though we have to
say the caves you’ll pass through on the Zero are a bit friendlier and more
densely populated than in that earlier game.

Those who live and work along the Zero follow familiar
patterns. They go to work, maybe bottling whiskey at the Hard Times Distillery
or administering memory experiments at the Radvansky Center. After work you’ll
find many of them at The Rum Colony, a lakeside bar famous for exotic drinks.
Some go to church, perhaps at Saint Thomas, in whatever building it’s found a
home these days.

Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition

Art & Music

It’s said that the distinguished installation artist Lula
Chamberlain has made her home somewhere along the Zero. In fact, you can see a
rare retrospective of her work on display now, so we hope you’ll make time for
a visit! If you or your travel companions are art lovers, stop by any one of
the galleries or museums that dot the region. I’ve heard there’s an interesting
photo exhibit on the river. And of course there’s the colossal Museum of
Dwellings. I don’t think it’s quite ready for visitors yet, but it wouldn’t
hurt to stop by and peek in the windows, even at night.

There’s always music in the air, so keep your radio in good
working order. And don’t be shy with the dial — you’ll find some stations
require a little elbow grease to tune into. If your radio is broken, or you simply
prefer the intimacy of a live concert, you’re sure to stumble across a late
night show in some obscure tavern. It’s easier to find if you’re not looking
for it.

Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition

Weather

Of course, we hope your trip isn’t clouded by ugly weather,
but you’d better prepare for rain — both above and below ground. Some of these
caves are quite large, and waterways such as the Echo River and Lake Lethe help
to create subterranean microclimates. We recommend carrying an umbrella and an extra
layer of clothing, even in summer. The cave air is much cooler than the
surface; it’s a nice place to escape the heat, so long as you don’t get lost.
Or, if you want to get lost, that’s OK too.

See, a little preparation goes a long way. Have a good trip, and we’ll see you in a few weeks on January 28 when Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition is released for Xbox One.
