Nintendo Plans To Go Big With Super Smash Bros. For Switch At E3 This Year

E3 is right around the corner and Nintendo is already preparing to bring the big guns out in June to keep viewers around the world – and attendees in Los Angeles – engaged and having fun. As with recent years, Nintendo will focus its E3 activities on games that are coming out in the immediate future, with a special spotlight given to a key headlining title: the recently announced Super Smash Bros. for Switch. Games launching beyond 2018 will be featured at a later date.

The festivities kick off with two days of high-level competitive action. Night owls across Europe can watch qualifying international teams – including the reigning European champions from Germany – ink their way to glory in the semi-finals of the Splatoon 2 World Championship tournament, from Monday 11th June at 23.30 (UK time) / Tuesday 12th June at 00.30 CEST until 02.00 (UK time) / 03.00 CEST. All the action from both days will be streamed live on Nintendo of Europe’s E3 2018 website, and on YouTube with a chatroom available in viewers’ local language.

At 17.00 (UK time) / 18.00 CEST on Tuesday 12th June, Nintendo will debut a video presentation featuring games releasing in 2018. Right after the presentation, Nintendo Treehouse: Live | E3 2018 will begin three days of live gameplay, appearances by developers and an insider look at games, starting with the upcoming Super Smash Bros title.

From 12th to 14th June, visitors to Nintendo’s booth at the Los Angeles Convention Center will be able to play a variety of games, including Super Smash Bros. Additionally, some of the most noteworthy upcoming third-party games on Nintendo Switch will be featured across several Nintendo activities throughout E3 week.

Details Regarding Nintendo Switch Online Services Will Be Shared In May

A results briefing for the last fiscal year has revealed that Nintendo plans to share more details on the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online service next month.

We already know that the service is set to launch this September, priced at $19.99 for an annual subscription (or $3.99 / $7.99 for a one-month, or three-month subscription respectively), but what we’ll actually be receiving for our money is still pretty unclear.

The one thing we do know, aside from it being necessary to play your favourite games online, is that the service will include access to a ‘Classic Game Selection’. Including the likes of Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fightand Dr. Mario, this will act similarly to Sony’s ‘PS Plus’ and Microsoft’s ‘Games With Gold’, allowing you to play the games as much as you like while you have an active subscription.

Other details surrounding the online subscription are few and far between, however. Will a subscription provide players with digital download discounts? Will it come with themes for the Switch’s bare-looking home screen? Hopefully we’ll find out soon enough.

Until the big news, then, what do you think we’ll see for the Nintendo Switch Online service? Is there anything you’re desperate for Nintendo to include? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Nintendo And Game Freak’s Latest Patent Hints At A New Direction For Pokémon On Switch

Details have emerged surrounding a patent application submitted by Nintendo and Game Freak, the developer of the Pokémon series. The application appears to be for an interactive kind of trading card design, which seems to be able to communicate with the Switch and change appearance based on in-game activity.

Described as a “non-limiting example game apparatus”, and “information processing apparatus” in other cases, the card is set to include a display screen consisting of a character image which is placed on top of a composite image. The composite image (which essentially sounds like the background layer behind the character’s image) can change its colour, background, and pattern.

The most interesting part of this, however, is that these parameters can change “according to an attitude of the game apparatus”. Of course, the exact meaning behind this in unclear, but this seems to suggest that your actions on Switch will affect the image on your trading card; perhaps the Switch’s motion controls can sync up with the card’s background design, or maybe the card can change appearance based on the outcome of in-game battles, with your character’s image changing depending on their current health level.

In case you’re in any doubt that this application has anything to do with Pokémon, some terminology used later in the application should put your mind at ease.

The player can capture (collect) the character of the wild monster by operating the player character… Furthermore, the player can train (raise) the fellow character and raise its level… The fellow character may evolve (deform) in some cases.

It’s also interesting to note that, while we suspect this technology is intended for use with Pokémon on Switch, the application makes it clear that it could also be used elsewhere. It describes the application’s main apparatus as “a portable information processing apparatus”, with mentions of buttons, gyro sensors, and a touchscreen, but then says that “it is not necessary to be limited to a game dedicated machine”, going on to specifically suggest the use of smart phones.

While it is possible that we’ll never see this technology ever be released – many patents never go any further than their initial applications – it would appear that Nintendo and Game Freak have some pretty big ideas for ways to move Pokémon forward. Could this be the start of a Pokémon amiibo card collection? Could this be a device that can interact with Pokémon on Switch and Pokémon GO, combining the ideas and mechanics of both games?

Make sure to let us know your wild thoughts and dreams in the comments below.

Review: Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs – Royal Edition (Switch eShop)

Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs – Royal Edition started out life in 2015 as a Kickstarter project and was eventually launched on PC, Mac and Linux in 2017 after being successfully backed. This strategy role-playing game by Polish-based developer Pixaleted Milk channels trademark aspects of classic strategy JRPGs while adding a number of modern enhancements to make the overall experience more accessible.

Drawing inspiration from its source material, Regalia includes an intriguing story, an unlikely protagonist supported by a cast of colourful characters and takes place in a fantasy setting where a bunch of baddies reign supreme. You take on the role of Kay, a young individual who inherits a rundown kingdom in lands far away, only to discover his deceased father was in some serious debt. The task is to now clean up the surrounding lands and restore the kingdom to its former glory by taking on quests and acquiring resources in order to fill the evil debt collector’s pockets with cash.

The humorous storyline quickly establishes the light-hearted tone of the game – with a large cast of JRPG character archetypes who make silly comments and observations about anything and everything. Dialogue-heavy sequences will occasionally drag but the more you immerse yourself in this universe, the more interested you’ll naturally become in what each character has to say. The general conversation does a substantial job of keeping you engaged as the story unfolds. It’s easy to see, based on the verbal exchanges and humour, how the Disgaea series has influenced the developer behind this project.

Everything in the world of Regalia is linked to a calendar system you would find in the likes of Persona. Kay and his party of companions must complete milestones within a set amount of days. Typically, you’ll lead a busy life with your day-to-day agenda split between developing strong social relations with characters around the kingdom (who also operate on their own unique schedules), to buying, selling, crafting and adventuring the lands far and wide – with restoration of the kingdom acting as the key motivational factor. The game gives you a certain level of freedom to pick and chose how exactly you go about accomplishing milestones. Regular interaction with the cast of characters in the game will unlock special expeditions and enhance skills of specific party members.

When you’re not in town, you’ll be out adventuring. Each area essentially doubles as a dungeon and is broken up into individual nodes – which separate each area into a series of individual tasks. Completing a dungeon requires you to complete each node within that specific area. Nodes assist with the pacing and are commonly divided up into battles as well as social and text-based scenarios with branching storylines. Once you’ve got the idea of how the daily routine works in Regalia, you’ll develop a rhythm. The nature of this design means there is plenty of replay value if you do decide to start a new game file.

The tactical turn-based combat doesn’t exactly revolutionise the genre. It’s a standard strategic affair, where you deploy Kay and the rest of his team mates on grid covered maps and then engage in battle with a variety of enemies – ranging from giant rats to zombies – by moving your party members one at a time. Each character has a set of options including the ability to move and perform a series of attacks and skills (from close combat to ranged) that can harm or even nullify enemies. There are also line of sight obstructions on the battlefield. If you do want the edge in battle, you will need to construct a party of characters that complement one another. With more than 20 unique characters available to recruit, befriend and develop relations with, there are plenty of choices on offer if you do have a specific team setup in mind.

If you find the enemies are too much of a hassle – with health bars that seemingly won’t deplete or effects that are unable to be avoided – you can always adjust the settings of battles in the options menu. This is where the modern touches can have an impact and instead of losing interest in the game altogether because you can’t progress, you can adjust a few sliders to ease the level of difficulty. In addition to being able to speed up the animations in battles, you can adjust the damage dealt by party members, change the damage party members receive, disable dodging for enemies and generate authority on defeating an enemy. These options are all listed in the gameplay settings. Upon starting a new game, you can also choose from three different difficulty settings. And if you really want, you can even skip entire battles and cutscenes.

How frequently gameplay settings are adjusted is completely up to you If you are finding the game too difficult to begin with, a few adjustments within this menu is advisable and will make for a much more tolerable experience. This is probably the defining feature of Regalia, allowing anyone to push forth to redevelop their kingdom and conquer all-evil even if they don’t necessarily have a history with games of this type. Purists may not agree with the inclusion of this feature, but it’s easy enough to ignore if you do have the willpower to resist.

The most notable downside to Regalia on Switch is the excessive load times. Every time you move around the kingdom or engage in a battle – each individual area or sequence must be loaded. Obviously, with any role-playing game you’ll need to exercise a certain degree of patience when learning the ropes and participating in prolonged battles but the endless run of loading screens wears thin pretty quickly. Even the smallest of rooms take one too many seconds to load before you can press a button to proceed. Fortunately, the developer is working hard to resolve this problem. The beautiful 3D character models, hand-drawn backdrops along with an appropriately themed soundtrack at least make up for this.

A few other issues include hard-to-navigate menus – fortunately there is an undo button in battle if you do make the wrong move – and smaller than acceptable text from time to time. Outside of battle, characters – depending on where they spawn – also have a habit of blocking the only exit in some areas, with the developer looking to solve this matter in the next patch. Overlooking these problems, the game performs well enough in both docked and handheld mode.

Conclusion

Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs – Royal Edition is a 30-40 hour adventure, with plenty of replay value when considering the additional in-game DLC, that does a convincing job capturing the spirit and charm of the JRPG formula while providing competent turn-based battles at the same time. The developer has achieved its goal, but doesn’t really make an effort to go above and beyond multiple other (and technically more authentic) offerings already available. There are a few notable shortcomings; however, being able to adjust gameplay settings on the fly makes this a game that can be enjoyed by veterans and newcomers alike.

Video: Use Colour And Co-Ordination To Win In The Wacky Races Of Trailblazers

Trailblazers is shaping up to be one of the most exciting and – more importantly – unique racers on Nintendo Switch. And the latest gameplay trailer sells its co-operative concept to a tee, showcasing how using paint fired from the front of your floating vehicle can either be used to create a trail your racing partner can boost on (as well as a means of stunning other racers).

You’ll get to zoom around a variety of equally-colourful locales – such as the sunny Brushwood Beach shown off in the trailer – and utilise a roster of characters, each with their own unique traits and driving style. Add in cross-platform play and some split-screen local play and you’ve got a racer with a podium finish in its sights.

Check out the trailer above and let the rest of the Nintendo Life community know what you think of this new indie racer…

Video: Check Out This New Trailer For Pool Panic

In the last Nintendo Direct focused on Nindies, one of the standout titles shown off was that of Pool Panic, billed as “the world’s least realistic pool simulator”. Though it still holds to the basic conventions of pool, this game looks absolutely nuts; placing you as the cue ball in a variety of bizarre and humorous situations where you must seek and sink every other ball on the map. It looks like loads of fun, and though the game still doesn’t have a release date, it recently got a new trailer.

If you view the video above, you can get a feel for the kind of game that Pool Panic is, going for a diverse and weird gameplay experience that’s sure to keep you on your toes. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer until Adult Swim launches this one; we can’t wait to get our hands on it.

What do you think? Will you be picking this up? How are your skills at actual pool? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

While Other Toys-To-Life Products Struggle, Sales Of amiibo Continue To Grow

It’s fair to say that the Toys-To-Life party is pretty much over now with Skylanders, Disney Infinity and LEGO Dimensions all seemingly at the end of their natural lives.

You might assume that the same would be the case for Nintendo’s amiibo line, but Nintendo’s latest financial statements suggest that amiibo sales are going from strength to strength:

We grew amiibo sales compared to the previous fiscal year, with approximately 10.30 million figures sold, while card sales hit approximately 5.80 million units.

This is the amiibo situation from the 2017 financial statement:

Although the release of some new titles offering amiibo functionality restored some momentum, amiibo sales remained limited to 9.1 million units for figure-type and 9.3 million units for card-type. In addition, there were relatively fewer offerings of downloadable content during this period, so digital sales were also down to a large extent on the same period last year.

Predictably, amiibo card sales have reduced as Nintendo really hasn’t made any more cards since the Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer line. Of course, we have had some seriously tempting amiibo figurines during the last fiscal year, including the Super Mario Odyssey range, The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild: The Champions series – and who could forget the lovely squishy Metroid and not-so-squishy Samus figures released to go alongside Metroid: Samus Returns on 3DS?

Let us know your thoughts on the continued growth of amiibo with a comment below.
