Video: Digital Foundry Gives Panic Button’s Wolfenstein II Port The Tick Of Approval

The folks over at Digital Foundry have taken a look at Panic Button’s latest Switch conversion, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. While it doesn’t take the crown as the best version of the game, the engineers behind the “impossible port” have still done a sound job recreating the experience with no sacrifices in terms of level design and every gameplay sequence intact.

For most parts, the Switch version runs at a steady 30fps in both the docked and handheld mode, with a few performance wobbles from time to time. The resolution in docked mode ranged from a top end of 720p to 1216×684 to 540p and 432p, all the way down to 640×360. In portable mode, the average resolution remains lower but the game still manages to feel satisfying. Despite the compromises, Digital Foundry considers the Switch release to be quite the technical feat.

Take a look at the 24-minute video analysis above, and tell us in the comments if you’ve been enjoying the game.

Devolver Digital’s Broforce Is “En Route” To The Nintendo Switch

Free Lives’ popular run-and-gun multiplayer platform shooter, Broforce, appears to be “en route” to the Switch according to a tweet by the game’s publisher, Devolver Digital. The affirmation is a surprise considering there was no mention the game was Nintendo-bound during the publisher’s E3 video event in June, even though it was originally rumoured to be coming to the Switch earlier this year.

In Broforce, you take control of one of the many bros who must take down waves of terrorists, rescue fellow bro teammates, blow up everything in sight and save prisoners of war. For the uninformed, the characters in this title are parodies of fictional action-heroes such as Rambo, Die Hard’s John McClane and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator.

In existing releases, you were able to team up with multiple other players, so it’s likely the same feature will be included in the Switch release. With no release date at this point in time, take a look at the game’s original launch trailer below and let us know if you’re at all interested in unleashing bullet hell to save the day.

Todd Howard Says Bethesda Will “Certainly Be Doing Things” With Switch In The Future

While Bethesda Game Studios is busy preparing for the release of Fallout 76, game director, Todd Howard, took some time out in Barcelona to collect his industry legend award at Gamelab 2018. During an interview with Game Reactor, he was asked about the company’s future plans for the Switch – specifically if there were any mainline Fallout announcements on the horizon:

Well, there’s definitely interest, [but] not something that we are exploring right now. We think that the Switch is a great platform. It was the first time we really worked closely with Nintendo on Skyrim – really, really great experience and we’ll certainly be doing things with the platform in the future, but right now it’s not a mainline Fallout 4.

When asked to share his own personal thoughts about the platform, he said:

I love it. When Nintendo came to us we were one of the first people that they showed the Switch to. So I got to play it very, very early, and immediately felt that this is unique, it’s not just a handheld, it’s also a console and it’s very uniquely Nintendo.

When it came out, we were there very early as developers…we got lucky how popular the platform was, but we felt strongly it was going to be popular. I love Zelda, the Switch became the ‘Zelda device’ when it came out, and Mario’s great on it and a lot of other games as well.

Do Todd’s responses ease any potential concerns you might have had about Bethesda’s interest in the Switch? Would you like to see a core Fallout experience, or at the very least, other open-world Bethesda games arrive on the system? Tell us below.

Nintendo Is Considering A Successor To The 3DS According To Its New President

The newly appointed Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa, may have only officially stepped into his position earlier this week, but already he’s been talking to a number of local media outlets in Japan about the direction of the company.

Speaking to The Kyoto Shimbun, the president touched on a range of subjects in relation to Nintendo’s current and future business practices. His points about the 3DS follow on from recent conversation in the West linked to the expected lifespan of the system. Mr Furukawa is of the belief the device still has advantages over the Switch and stated Nintendo was “considering various possibilities” in regards to a successor for the popular handheld device. How serious he is about this is unclear, as the Switch is obviously a key focus for Nintendo right now – with the aim being for every person to own one.

Mobile gaming is steadily becoming an important area for the company as well. According to Furukawa, Nintendo wants to diversify its offerings and eventually make mobile platforms a main pillar of revenue, even though it only contributes to about four percent of the total sales at this point in time. Collaborations with companies such as DeNA is another important factor in helping this area succeed.

Would you like to see a successor to the 3DS, or do you think Nintendo should focus on the Switch and the mobile market? Tell us below.

Rumour: Jim Carrey In Negotiations To Play Dr. Robotnik In Upcoming Sonic Movie

News surfacing about Paramount Pictures’ Sonic The Hedgehog movie continues to shock and surprise, with the latest development being the Canadian-American actor and comedian, Jim Carrey, is allegedly in talks to take on the role of Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Carrey’s villainous character would be fittingly hell-bent on achieving world domination. Sonic, along with the help of James Marsden, are presumably out to stop him. It’s also been noted by a writer from Hollywood Reporter that Carrey would be a live-action person in the film, not just voicing the evildoer.

Compared to a recent description of the blue blur’s personality, this latest update about the upcoming live action and computer animation hybrid film sounds a bit more promising. The 56-year-old actor has already played a number of borderline psychotic characters over the years – starring in the 1994 film, The Mask, and taking on the role of The Riddler in Batman Forever in 1995 – making this seem like an appropriate casting choice.

How do you feel about the possibility of Jim Carrey starring in the Sonic movie? Do you think Doctor Eggman being cast as an actual person rather than an animated character will work? Tell us below.

Hollow Knight Sold Over A Quarter Of A Million Copies On Switch In Two Weeks

It was only last week that Team Cherry – the Australian-based developer behind the recent eShop hit, Hollow Knight – spoke about how it was “working” on making a physical release happen. In the same Reddit AMA, the studio admitted it was somewhat surprised with how well the title had been received and stated it was more than satisfied with current sales on Nintendo’s latest device.

Now, exactly one week on, the developer has provided a rough figure to support this statement, revealing to IGN the Switch iteration sold over 250,000 copies within the first two weeks of its release. In a recent interview with Waypoint, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime even mentioned how the game was doing “exceptionally well” sales-wise.

Based on this information, it appears Hollow Knight has been welcomed with open arms by Nintendo Switch owners. Tell us in the comments if you were one of the many people to purchase this title when it was released on the eShop earlier this month.

Ubisoft CEO Believes Future Of Games Industry Is Streaming, With Potential To Reach 5 Billion Players In Ten Years

The idea of playing video games across multiple devices via a stream might still be a bit of a pipedream, but that won’t stop Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, from dreaming about what might be in years to come. During a recent YouTube Q&A at this year’s E3, the well-known face of Ubisoft took some time out to answer questions about the French publisher and the future of the video game industry in general.

Having already been rather outspoken about the immediate future, stating how he believes the next console generation will perhaps be the last, Guillemot provided insight into his thoughts about streaming:

What we’re dreaming of is that technology will allow us to actually stream our games to all the TVs, mobile phones and tablets in the future and that we will be able to give an opportunity to all our brands to reach 2.5 billion players in five years and maybe five billion players in ten years. So we’re very excited about that new opportunity and the other thing is also to be able to use big forms of servers to create games that we couldn’t dream of creating before.

He elaborated on this concept further in a separate response, explaining:

The next big thing is going to be the capacity to stream our games to more screens and the ability to use all the forms of servers that will be in data centers so that we can create the ultimate game which is very alive, responsive to all the actions you do in it, remembering what you have done and anticipating units.

In the same Q&A, Guillemot also briefly touched on the current collaborative projects with Nintendo, acknowledging the strong relationship with the Japanese-based company:

The Nintendo brands and their capacity to create fantastic games is really something that our creators in Ubisoft love and when they collaborate with Nintendo they are extremely happy to do so – so yes, it will continue and I hope we will be able to surprise you with new things in the future.

What do you make of Yves Guillemot’s thoughts about streaming video games? Do you think it will become commonplace in years to come? Would you like to see Ubisoft work with more Nintendo brands in the future? Share your thoughts below…

Fortnite Tells Players To “Look To The Sky” This Saturday For A One-Off ‘Blast Off’ Event

With Fortnite‘s fifth season just around the corner, players are no doubt eagerly anticipating news on what form it might take. A new tease has appeared in the game today, potentially giving us the first glimpse of things to come.

As you can see in the image below, the in-game message tells players to “look to the sky” in a match this Saturday. The event, which is currently referred to as ‘Blast Off!’ will only happen once so this will be the only chance players get to see what unfolds.

Could this mean that another part of the map is about the be destroyed, just like the Dusty Depot? Maybe a new batch of superheroes are about to be introduced? Who knows.

Make sure to get on the game by 10:30am PT / 1:30pm ET / 6:30pm BST / 7:30pm CET tomorrow (Saturday 30th) to see what happens if you’re interested.

Let us know what you think it could be in the comments below. Here’s hoping it’s something to do with Team Rocket! (Of course not…)
