Treat Your Ears To This Stunning Okami Soundtrack Vinyl Boxset

To celebrate the release of Okami HD on Switch, Data Discs has partnered with Capcom to release a remastered version of the original soundtrack on vinyl, and it’s available to pre-order as we speak.

Originally released in 2006 and composed by Masami Ueda, Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Rei Kondoh and Akari Groves, the Okami soundtrack is known for suiting the game perfectly; the pieces act as a natural fit to the recurring themes of restoration and resolve. Using traditional Japanese instruments, and inspired by distant folklore, the score moves between peacefulness and danger effortlessly. It’s safe to say we loved the game in our recent review, and that included its soundtrack:

“[The soundtrack] revels in flutes and stringed instruments. Even during the more intense action sequences, there’s a certain kind of peaceful and serene tone to the music that infuses the amazing visuals with a heightened air of mysticism, and this makes for an experience that you won’t want to miss.”

This new release is presented as a quadruple LP box set, featuring over two hours of newly remastered music and a 40-page artbook. There is also a double-sided lithographic print featuring original illustrations from the Capcom archives in Japan. A lossless download code for the album is also included, and you can pick up any one of the following editions:

  • 4 x 180g Frosted Clear vinyl with “Cherry Blossom Pink” and “Amaterasu White” splatter **LIMITED EDITION**
  • 4 x 180g Frosted Clear
  • 4 x 180g Classic Black

Pre-orders can be obtained from the Data Discs website, although the limited edition variant will only be available to order until 15th August. The site also contains a full track list, so make sure to check it out if you need your Okami music fix.

Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! Will Receive Drum Set And Physical Release In Europe

Here’s the news that every European Taiko Drum Master fan has been waiting for: Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! will be receiving a physical release in the region, as well as the compatible drum set.

Yes, Bandai Namco has confirmed that the game will be available for European customers in both digital and physical formats, with the physical drum set being offered to fully replicate the Japanese arcade experience; we have no word just yet on any news for North America, although we’d be hopeful that the same conditions will apply for that region, too.

On top of this, the full soundtrack has been confirmed to remain consistent with the Japanese release already available, including songs from the likes of Splatoon, Pokémon, Kirby, Dragon Ball Z, and even the “Turkish March” composed by Beethoven. Here’s the full listing:

Are you excitedly waiting for the game’s launch on 2nd November? Do you already have a Japanese copy sitting on your Switch? Let us know down below.

New Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu And Eevee Trailer Shows Mega Evolutions, Vermilion City And More

The Pokémon Company International has released a brand new trailer today, alongside a new batch of information for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!.

Yesterday, we had our first glimpse of Mega Evolutions appearing in the game thanks to an early scan of Japanese magazine CoroCoro, but this trailer shows this process in much clearer detail. As you can see, Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise – the three fully evolved starter Pokémon – all have their Mega Evolutions present in the game.

We also get a new look at Vermilion City including its Gym, the in-game battle with Lt. Surge and his Raichu, and even the S.S. Anne – which is looking very majestic indeed. The trailer also shows how various Pokémon will follow the trainer (in addition to the ones we saw recently), although it’s perhaps best to ignore the fact that Goldeen – a fish – seems to now be able to swim through the air.

The more we see of these new titles, the more we’re itching to jump back into the Kanto region and catch ’em all. But what about you? Let us know your thoughts on the games below.

Runbow Meets Bit.Trip In Brand New Auto-Runner Joggernauts, Hitting Switch This Summer

Space Mace and Graffiti Games have revealed that upcoming auto-runner Joggernauts will be racing onto Switch this summer, blending the likes of Runbow and Bit. Trip Runner for a chaotic co-op experience.

In Joggernauts, players take turns switching to the lead of a jogging team as they navigate through colour-coded platforming levels, all while avoiding crashing into obstacles. In order to finish the level and collect all the trophies for victory, teams must work together and time their jumps and switches perfectly.

This Switch announcement comes with an extra dollop of good news, as a single-player mode has also been revealed for the game (as seen in the trailer above). Here, one player simultaneously controls two differently coloured characters, and friends can also jump in for two-to-four person co-op play. While jogging, players must match the colour of the lead runner with enemies, obstacles, prizes, and pickups in the level. Failure to do so will result in a reduction of the overall shared number of lives for the team.

Zachary Johnson, Co-Founder of Space Mace, sums up the single-player mode nicely:

“Single player mode is a bit like patting your head while rubbing your belly because players will need to keep track of jumping and switching for two characters, which is loads of fun and most folks get the hang of it after a couple levels. Your characters jog as a pair of two different colors, one in front of the other. Your right hand controls jumping the front/lead color jogger and switching which color Joggernaut is in front, while your left hand controls jumping the back/rear color jogger.”

If you’re interested, make sure to keep an eye out for this one over the next couple of months, and let us know your initial impressions with a comment below.

Random: Purple And Yellow Chairs In Smash Bros. Direct Fuel Speculation Waluigi Will Be Playable Fighter

The Director of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Masahiro Sakurai said during the latest broadcast the team intended to reveal the design of every fighter before the game launched on the Switch later this year, with a few more to announcements to come. He also noted the addition of two highly requested fighters – in Echo form – during the Direct.

Of course, lines such as these, coupled with the fact there were coloured chairs in the background of the latest Direct has once again led to wild speculation. According to Polygon, Nintendo is toying with us all, by placing “purple and yellow” chairs behind Sakurai during the latest Smash broadcast.

Apparently, these two coloured chairs are a sign Waluigi will be a playable character in the game, despite the fact he’s already an Assist Trophy. Could there perhaps still be hope for him as a playable fighter? Else, is this just leftover remnants from Wario’s recent marketing campaign or even two regular office chairs.

What do you think? Is this a sign? Are these chairs even purple and yellow? Tell us if you think Waluigi will ever become a playable fighter in the Smash series in the comments below.

Mega evolution and more revealed in latest Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! announcement

Mega evolution and more revealed in latest Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! announcement

The Pokémon Company International and Nintendo announced new details about Mega Evolution and much more in the highly anticipated Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! games, releasing later this year on the Nintendo Switch system. Both games are designed for players taking their first steps into the Pokémon video game world as well as longtime fans wanting a new way to play Pokémon.

Don’t Just Evolve—Mega Evolve
In Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, players will be able to Mega Evolve a Pokémon once per battle if they have a Key Stone and the Mega Stone corresponding to that specific Pokémon. Mega Evolution, known as “the Evolution that transcends Evolution,” momentarily unleashes the energy within a Pokémon and can only be accomplished when a strong bond exists between the Pokémon and its Trainer. The first three Pokémon that fans will be able to Mega Evolve during their adventure will be Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise.

Explore Iconic Kanto Region Location Vermilion City
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! will bring players to a variety of interesting locations in the Kanto region, including Vermilion City, where the luxury cruise liner the S.S. Anne docks once a year. In the Vermilion City Pokémon Gym, players can battle Gym Leader Lt. Surge, who is also known as the Lightning Lieutenant.

Here Comes Team Rocket!
Team Rocket, a nefarious organization set on using the world’s Pokémon in despicable plots to make money, is another example of the diverse cast of characters that players will encounter in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! This includes the most famous members of Team Rocket—Jessie, James, and Meowth!

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! will release exclusively on Nintendo Switch on November 16, 2018. For more information, please visit https://pokemonletsgo.pokemon.com/en-us/.

Review: Megaton Rainfall (Switch eShop)

Ever wanted to know what it feels like to be a proper superhero? No, not the web-swinging acrobatics of Spider-Man or the crime-solving machismo of Batman. A proper, superpowered being. It’s an experience video game developers have long struggled to replicate – Superman: The New Adventures, anyone? – but Pentadimensional Games may have finally cracked the metahuman code with the empowering destruction of Megaton Rainfall.

You embody the incorporeal form of the Offspring, an indestructible guardian that’s been sent to Earth to defend it from an impending alien invasion. And we mean the entire Earth. Thankfully, you’re imbued with the power to fly at speeds that don’t just break the sound barrier, they shatter it into dust. You thunder past cities – or through them, if you’re feeling more malevolent than benign – or rocket up into the stars before zooming off to a new location around the globe. It’s a breathtaking experience, especially during the first hour or two, and one we never expected to see pulled off on Switch.

Originally designed for use with PlayStation VR (and later, other PC-based headsets), you can immediately tell Megaton Rainfall was built with the immersive space of virtual reality in mind. Set entirely in first-person, there’s a real thrill when you reach the fastest of Machs, hurtling from one continent to another in first-person, passing lakes, ocean, cities and (mostly) barren wasteland. With your offensive powers resigned to a burst of energy you can fire from your hand, you soon realise Megaton Rainfall is a basically an FPS that’s sprouted wings.

This is, to say the least, a mostly rough-looking game. There are moments of genuine beauty to behold – such as when you float above the planet and the sun sparkles amid the distant stars – but down on Earth you’ll mostly be speeding past featureless terrain or cities with blurry-looking buildings. There’s also a real noticeable green/brown hue to the world you’re guarding, and that muddiness can really affect how you play.

Your flight speed is incredibly smooth, but often so fluid it’s easy to overshoot your chosen destination. There’s also no targeting system, which can make trying to line up a shot in a 360-degree space more than a little challenging. It’s an issue compounded by the fact that some alien ships or weak points are so small it’s more a case of luck than skill to hit them. The fact that many of these extraterrestrial invaders can disappear into the colour pallet of the background just adds to the problem.

However, the longer you play, the easier it becomes to distinguish these flying foes – each with their own unique flight pattern and strengths – and you soon learn to try and compensate for the perpetual ‘slipperiness’ of your godly avatar, but it doesn’t detract from the fact the game would have befitted from a little more guidance on its HUD design (or a means to repair the damage done to each city). We find enemies are a lot easier to identify when playing on your TV in docked mode, but it’s an issue nonetheless.

Since you’re an unkillable god, the game’s sense of peril is, instead, measured by the health of the area you’re defending. An on-screen bar will gradually deplete as your alien foes lay waste to the city, meaning you’ll need all that speed to zoom between wave points. It’s also incredibly easy to cause collateral damage yourself, with your blasts of energy providing enough firepower to level a whole block in something reminiscent of Man of Steel’s final act. The sounds of people screaming en masse every time you miss a shot – and you will, a lot – will ensure your best intentions are often tempered with a perpetual sense of guilt.

The campaign has a decent enough story behind it, but most of the time you’ll just be concerned with blowing things up and cringing everytime a well-meaning blast of energy misses an alien craft and levels a skyscraper. There’s an arcade-style Score Attack mode to unlock later and an endless Free mode as well, but that’s about it when it comes to replayability. There’s also no support for gyro controls, which seems like a missed opportunity considering this is a title built with motion controllers in mind.

Missions are mostly divided between destroying multiple alien ship types and other small deviations to mission designs, such as flinging nuclear bombs into a nearby ocean or hurling them into space, but more often than not you’re just flying around the planet following a marker that ultimately leads you to the same kind of goal. There are elements of Resogun here thanks to its shooter DNA and firepower management, but unlike Housemarque’s magnificent 3D blaster, Megaton Rainfall too often cries out for a little more variety to spice up the ‘wow’ factor of its premise.

Conclusion

Created by a one-person team based out of Madrid, Megaton Rainfall is, at the very least, a technical marvel. It’s very much comparable to No Man’s Sky; an indie hit that wows with its sheer scale and the breadth of its ambition. But much like Hello Games’ oft-maligned space explorer, this superhero simulator struggles to maintain the impressive impact of its first hour, or live up to the lofty heights of those dangerously high ambitions.
