Feature: Castlevania Season 2 Review: Drac’s Back In A Vastly Superior Second Series

The first series of Netflix’s gore-soaked and expletive-packed Castlevania adaptation went down a treat, as you’ll know if you read our exhaustive review. While it was a little on the short side, it did an utterly superb job of setting the scene and fleshing out the main characters: the troubled anti-hero Trevor Belmont (The Hobbit’s Richard Armitage), the brattish and grumpy half-vampire Alucard (James Callis from Battlestar Galactica) and the plucky but determined Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso of Winx Club fame) – three individuals thrown together by fate to meet the impending threat of Dracula (Graham McTavish from Outlander), the lord of all vampires who, following a brief period of peace encouraged by his human wife (and Alucard’s mother, Lisa), has gone mad with vengeance after his aforementioned bride is murdered by members of the Church.

The shortness of series one was mitigated by the news that it had been commissioned for a second, longer series, which goes live on Netflix today. Comprised of 8 episodes that are around 30 minutes in lengths each (give or take), this sophomore season packs in a lot more plot, action and characters than its predecessor, while allowing the existing cast far more room to breathe and evolve. Alucard and Dracula – both of whom were given a criminally small amount of screen time in series one – are regulars this time around and that’s a definite plus; McTavish in particular really gets his chance to shine here, imbuing the tortured Count with a deep sense of humanity (ironic, you might say) which is only hinted at in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Torn between his late wife’s wish to heal the world through science and his boiling, near-uncontrollable hatred of the humans who put her to death, he’s a real bag of emotions throughout, yet still finds time to deliver some of the wittiest lines in the whole production.

The series kicks off with Dracula meeting with his council of war in order to determine the best course of action following his unexpected defeat at the close of the previous season. He assembles his vampire generals from around the world – including the comical Viking Godbrand, voiced with relish by Peter Stormare (Fargo), and Castlevania series regular Carmilla, played by Jamie Murray (Dexter) – and broods within his fortress, his desire for revenge the only thing driving him forward. However, by far the most interesting additions to the cast are the Devil Forgemasters Hector and Issac, both of whom originally appeared in the PlayStation 2 and Xbox title Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, which means that this new group of episodes borrows not only from Castlevania III, but also from another entry in Konami’s long-running franchise.

Curse of Darkness is set at the same time as the third NES outing and Trevor Belmont actually appears in it, so it makes sense to include Hector and Issac in the story. Hector – voiced by Toby James (The Divergent Saga) – looks very much like he did in the 2005 PlayStation game, while Isaac (Adetokumboh M’Cormack) sports an altogether different look and backstory; he’s a former slave whose ill-treatment has convinced him that love simply does not exist in this world. Both of these characters are human rather than undead, but they hold a coveted position in Dracula’s army thanks to their ability to reanimate corpses and turn them into troops to swell Vlad’s undead ranks. We won’t spoil the individual character arcs for the pair, but suffice to say, the story takes some interesting twists and turns – and the addition of Hector and Isaac is perfectly natural, rather than tacked-on. It truly feels like they were made to be part of the Castlevania’s story’s wider narrative – which wasn’t always the case when playing Curse of Darkness, it has to be said.

Dracula’s plan to wipe humanity from the face of the earth is thrown into disarray when his authority is challenged, but a more pressing concern for him is the knowledge that his son and a member of the Belmont family – long considered extinct – are conspiring against him; our three heroes spend a large portion of the series exploring Trevor’s family home in hope of finding secrets or weapons they can utilise against the Count. Because of this need to put all of the pieces in the right place at the right time, the middle section of the season does sag ever so slightly, but it more than atones for this by the time you hit episode 6. From this point on, the series builds to an incredible climax; a payoff that will more than pacify those who complained about the conclusion of the opening season.

Netflix’s Castlevania is dripping with fantastic dialogue. Legendary comic book scribe Warren Ellis returns to pen the script, and we honestly lost count of the sheer number of incredible lines on offer. There’s also plenty of swearing (again) and lots of welcome humour; Ellis shows once more than he understands these characters perfectly; their motivations, their desires and their regrets. At a time when Hollywood and other media makers seem to totally miss the point when it comes to adapting video games for film, TV or animation, it’s refreshing to see a production which is so clearly invested in – and respective to – its source material. There are even references to other games in the series; a portrait of Lament of Innocence’s Leon Belmont hangs in the family home, and Trevor goes on to discuss this important ancestor in a conversation about his lineage. In another scene, Slogra and Gaibon – a pair of monsters seen in Symphony of the Night – fight Alucard, and there are numerous other visual callbacks to the games, such as the items which are found in the Belmont’s underground vault.

Ironically, the highlight of the entire series – for us, at least – comes from Trevor Morris’ soundtrack, which we were rather critical of in our review of season one. Morris has dramatically upped his game here, and his original compositions are more memorable and effective. However, it’s during an epic battle in episode 7 that Morris really outdoes himself, adapting the iconic ‘Bloody Tears’ theme from the video games in such a wonderful manner than we genuinely rose from our seats and punched the air – no word of a lie. Considering Morris ignored Castlevania’s rich selection of music in series one, it’s brilliant to see him use one of its most famous tunes so superbly in this second season. We can’t be sure, but we think we also heard hints of other famous tunes elsewhere, proof that Morris has really done his homework this time around.

Unfortunately, there are still some niggles to discuss. As was the case in the previous series, there are episodes where the animation becomes almost unforgivably choppy; while it never ruins your enjoyment it does rob some sequences of their impact. Thankfully, this isn’t a common problem and there are certain scenes which boast beautifully smooth animation – the titanic encounter which takes place right at the end of episode 7 springs to mind, as it not only looks amazing but also tugs on the old heartstrings at the same time. Some viewers may also take issue with the level of gore on display, despite the mature nature of the subject matter, but that’s very much down to personal preference. Needless to say, this may be animation but it’s not for kids.

Netflix has already confirmed that series three is in production and will launch next year, which may come as a surprise when you get to the end of episode 7, which appears to wrap up the whole story. However, Hector and Isaac’s tale is arguably only just beginning, and we assume the Forgemasters will become the key focus on the next group of episodes. They’re excellent, well-written and impeccably-portrayed characters, so we truly relish seeing their tales expanded.

Despite some minor niggles then, series two of Castlevania is perhaps better than we ever expected, which is really saying something when you consider how much we enjoyed the first season. It’s so rare to see a video game property transition to an entirely different medium with this level of skill and faithfulness, and the only real negative here is the wait until the third season in 2019.

Both seasons of Castlevania are available to watch on Netflix now.

Guide: Pokémon GO Candy – How To Get Lots Of Candy Fast

Pokémon GO simplified the evolution system for most Pokémon so casual players and new fans alike wouldn’t have to dig quite so deep as in the mainline games to power up their favourite monsters. Rather than perform a bunch of obtuse steps, now you simply just have to collect a bunch of Candy to trigger an evolution.

Each Pokémon family has its own Candy type, which you can collect easily via a wide variety of different methods like catching and transferring Pokémon. There are so many ways to collect Candy that you’ll rarely find yourself short, and even if you do it won’t take you long to get what you need if you know what you’re doing

In this guide, we’re going to help you collect so much Candy that it will make you sick. We’ll explain how Candy works and then go through the various different methods of collecting it. Pretty soon you’ll have a Candy horde so big it will make any kid at Halloween jealous.

What Is Candy In Pokémon GO?

Candy is a collectible item in Pokémon GO that allows you to evolve Pokémon. Each different Pokémon family has its own Candy type, with the name usually derivative of the lowest evolution, but that isn’t always the case. For example, Charizard uses Charmander Candy, while Raichu uses Pikachu Candy rather than Pichu Candy.

Each evolution typically costs more Candy than the previous, with the Candy cost ranging from 12 to 400, depending on the evolution.

How To Collect Candy In Pokémon GO

There are actually numerous methods of collecting Candy in Pokémon GO, ranging from catching Pokémon to transferring them. Each method offers a different number of Candy too, so you won’t want to rely on just one. Let’s go through the various different methods below.

Catch Pokémon

The most reliable method of collecting Candy is to catch Pokémon. You’ll get three Candy for a first tier evolution, five for a second, and a whopping 10 for a third. That’s all very good you’re probably thinking, but how do you give yourself a higher chance of catching particular Pokémon?

Well, you could try tracking down a Pokémon nest. These are dedicated spawn locations for a certain type of Pokémon, where you’ll have a higher chance of tracking them down if you catch Pokémon there. To find Pokémon nests, you can head on over to the Reddit and Google Maps communities.

An easier method is to hang around a particular biome that the Pokémon you’re trying to catch is more likely to appear in. Again, Reddit is a great resource for learning more about the Biome system.

Transfer Pokémon

Got a Pokémon with bad IVs? Don’t leave them to gather dust – just transfer them out of your inventory. By doing so, you’ll earn a Candy for that type of Pokémon. Simply tap on the Pokémon you want to transfer, hit the three lines on the bottom right of the screen, and tap transfer. A teary goodbye is optional.

Use Berries

Pinap Berries double the amount of Candy you earn from catching a Pokémon, so if you’re serious about gathering Candy, you’ll want to use this as often as possible when catching your favourite monsters. Think about it: if you catch a Pokémon at the third stage of its evolution, you’ll earn a whopping 20 Candy.

You can also feed berries to Pokémon at gyms to give yourself a chance of getting a Candy to drop. It’s a great method of using up some of your unwanted berries too.

Walk With Your Buddy

If you have a super rare Pokémon that you’re just not going to encounter in the wild, like a Mythical or Legendary, it makes sense to make them your Buddy. You’ll then start earning Candy for them each time you walk a certain distance.

This system works similar to incubation. Each Pokémon has a certain distance you have to walk to earn a piece of Candy for them. You won’t be rolling in Candy, but for certain Pokémon it’s one of very few methods of earning it.

Hatch Eggs

Hatching eggs provides an absolute ton of Candy, but there’s no guarantee that it will be for the Pokémon you want it to be. The best you can do is hatch eggs with the highest chance of containing that Pokémon and pray.

You get around 10 Candy for a 2km Egg, 20 for a five, and a massive 30 for hatching a 10km Egg. It’s one of the least reliable methods of gathering a particular type of Candy, but you might as well hatch a few eggs in the background just in case.

Do you know of any more reliable methods of hoarding Candy in Pokémon GO? Let us know in the comments below so we can all benefit!

Mandragora Studio’s Freaky Awesome has arrived on Nintendo Switch today, bringing all sorts of chaos, monsters, and dog-saving antics along for the ride.

The game is heavily influenced by the roguelite mechanics found within The Binding of Isaac, combining them with a bonkers setting to make things just that little bit more crazy. Yes, you’ll have to deal with toxic wastes, weird creepy monsters, and deadly traps at this factory, and it’s very likely that you’ll mutate into horrendous shapes and die over and over again, but you’d do anything for your good boy, even if it means turning into a four-legged monstrosity yourself.

Explore a mutating world: the game itself mutates! The map is randomly generated, but the game itself changes every successful run with new unlocked locations and enemies, bigger levels, stronger bosses and new mechanics.
Avoid traps… or use them to your advantage: explosives, flying barrels, moving saws, flames and even flying pig heads are as deadly to you as to your enemies!
Rogue-lite with permadeath: death is permanent, but your advancements too. You can keep your unlocked items, skills and mutations.
Play solo or with friends with an up to 4 players co-op mode. You can keep the progress earned while playing multi!

Fan-Made Website Which Helps Switch Owners Find Online Players Is About To Reach 40,000 Users

It’s no secret that Nintendo’s online gaming infrastructure has left many of its fans frustrated, with several of the Switch’s features making playing with others more complicated than it needs to be. Well, one fan has stepped up to the plate to create an easier way to play with others online, and early signs suggest that it could be a raging success.

A few days ago, a Reddit user under the name of bezzaton shared a post detailing a new website that they had created. “I love Nintendo,” they said, “but between Nintendo friend code IDs, many games not offering online multiplayer, and the online multiplayer that does exist often being difficult to find new players for, there’s a real issue here that I believe could use some solving”.

The solution comes in the form of Switcher.gg, a website which allows users to sign up to organise play with others. Once you’ve signed up, you can choose to find other players for local co-op sessions (within the distance you set) or find others for online multiplayer. It even matches you to other players based upon games that you both own and a variety of other specifications that you can set, essentially acting like a dating app – but for finding Super Smash Bros. Ultimate matches instead.

The site connects to Discord, so users can login via their Discord account and all activity is linked between both platforms, meaning that you can actually do your matchmaking through Discord, too. At the time of writing, the site is only a couple of hundred users away from hitting 40,000, with the community growing and growing by the hour.

Of course, whether or not Nintendo will take any issue with the site is yet to be seen, and it’s worth pointing out – just to be extremely clear – that Switcher is not backed officially by Nintendo, and users will be connecting with random strangers online. If that’s what you’re hoping to find, though, to secure more matches in games that don’t have a particularly large pool of players, this could be a good way to go.

Have you already heard about the site? Have you tried it out for yourself? Let us know about your experiences with it in the comments below.

Guide: Pokémon GO Meltan, Melmetal, and Mystery Boxes – What Is Meltan and How to Catch and Evolve it

Meltan is a brand new Pokémon coming soon to Pokémon GO and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!. It’s the only generation eight monster that we know about so far, and The Pokémon Company chose to announce it in a completely unprecedented manner. Right after the September Community Day concluded, Meltan appeared in the game with no name or CP, and upon catching it it would turn into a Ditto. This sent the internet raving mad.

That’s all in the past now though, as we know pretty much all there is to know about Meltan. We know it evolves into Melmetal, is a Mythical Hex Nut Pokémon, and will be available in both Pokémon GO and Let’s Go. In this guide, we’ll go through everything we know about Meltan at this point, including its type, evolutions, and when it might appear in the game.

Pokémon GO – Meltan

What Is Meltan?

Meltan is a brand new Steel type Pokémon just introduced in Pokémon GO. It’s a Mythical Pokémon that is also described as a Hex Nut Pokémon.

Here’s the official description:

Most of Meltan’s body is made from liquid metal, and its shape is very fluid. It can use its liquid arms and legs to corrode metal and absorb it into its own body.

Meltan generates electricity using the metal it absorbs from outside sources. It uses this electricity as an energy source and also as an attack that can be fired from its eye.

Clearly a curious Pokémon, Meltan is very expressive and shows an interest in all kinds of things

How Do I Catch Meltan?

The short answer is you can’t – not right now. Meltan won’t be available in Pokémon GO until Let’s Go launches later this year, and even then the catching method is a little different to the norm.

In what can only be described as a pretty cynical move on The Pokémon Company’s part, you actually have to own Let’s Go to catch Meltan, Here’s how it works in steps:

  1. Transfer a Pokémon from Pokémon GO to Pokémon Let’s GO. You don’t have to transfer it to your own copy of Let’s Go, according to Eurogamer. A friend’s copy might do the trick.
  2. Open a Mystery Box that you’ll receive in Pokémon GO for doing so. This releases Meltans into the wild for 30 minutes, allowing you to catch them to your heart’s content.
  3. After 30 minutes, the Mystery Box closes and you’ll have to transfer another Pokémon to Let’s Go to get another Mystery Box.

New special research tasks will also make their way into Pokémon GO shortly that relate to Meltan. That might offer another avenue for collecting the mysterious Pokémon, but we won’t know until it’s available in the game.

What is Melmetal?

Melmetal is Meltan’s evolution, which is a first of its kind for Mythical Pokémon. None of the prior Mythical types like Mew or Celebi had evolutions.

So it makes sense then that you have to collect 400 Meltan Candy to evolve into Melmetal – a feat that might prove surprisingly easy considering how you catch Meltan. Can you game the system to collect a ton of Meltans at whim?

It seems that you can’t evolve Meltan to Melmetal in Pokémon Let’s Go, which is curious. Instead, you’ll have to transfer it from Pokémon Go into Let’s Go.

Melmetal is a Steel-type Pokémon with a signature move called Double Iron Bash. It’s a Steel type too, hits twice, and makes your opponent flinch.

Original Story – Meltan Speculation

Where Did It Come From?

All we know so far is that this mysterious Pokémon randomly started appearing shortly after the September Community Day, and that many players have encountered it since.

What Is It?

That’s as of yet unclear. It currently has no name, doesn’t appear in the Pokédex, and turns into a Ditto the moment you try and catch it.

Is It An Accident?

Initial speculation pointed towards the Nut Pokémon being a placeholder inclusion in Pokémon GO, and that releasing it into the wild was a accident on Niantic’s part. This was later somewhat miscredited when Niantic’s Head of Marketing Kento Suga tweeted about it.

Is It Kecleon?

So far, fan theories have pointed towards two pretty solid conclusions: that this mysterious Pokémon is Kecleon or a brand new Pokémon entirely.

Kecleon is a chameleon-like Pokémon that can take the form of its environment in order to hide, which could explain Ditto’s confusion when it tries to transform into it. Dataminers found further “evidence” when they discovered that the mysterious Nut Pokémon was labeled as ‘Kecleon’ in the game files.

Could This Be The Mysterious New Pokémon Promised In Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee?

Almost certainly. In fact, the Pokémon itself has now appeared on the official site for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, and the official description claims that Pokémon GO is “key to meeting this curious new Pokémon in Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!.

When Will We Find Out Exactly What This Is?

Either way, we should find out what this mysterious new Pokémon is very soon. If it is Kecleon, then Niantic can introduce it properly at any point, as Gen 3 is already available within the game. If not, well, it’s not that long until Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! launch on Nintendo Switch. Maybe then?

Either way, we’ll keep on top of this fan speculation and keep this guide updated with any developments. Stay tuned.

What do you reckon this mysterious new Pokémon is? Is it Kecleon? A Brand new Pokémon? Something else entirely? Let us know what you reckon in the comments section below.

Indie Beat ‘Em Up Streets Of Red Receiving Free Content Update This Halloween

Streets Of Red: Devil’s Dare Deluxe by Secret Base is a bloody multiplayer beat ’em up that arrived on the Switch eShop earlier this year. As low-key as the release might have been, the game turned out to be quite good – receiving positive feedback from reviewers and fans. This led to more than 10,000 copies being sold and the developer was able to recoup its port costs in less than ten days.

Since then, Secret Base has been hard at work on a little update for Streets Of Red. This free content will arrive this Halloween on 31st October. Here’s what you can expect:

All New Secret Bosses!
Hunter: A gonzo alien spreading fear and loathing in the meadows!
Z Warrior: If you fall asleep on the job, he’ll be dockin’ your pay!
Mul Goemul: A fishy fighter with a host of gross attacks!
Sakura: A three-eyed haunt who dares you to put a ring on it!
These new challengers will only come out and play for the most skilled opponents. Can you find their secret lairs and be the last girl (or boy) standing? Prepare for the fight of your life!

New Language Options!

English, French and Spanish are set to go live alongside these new monsters in the USA, while the EU/AU build will receive all those options plus Russian, Dutch, German, Italian and Portuguese.

Online Leaderboards!

Just like in the arcade beat ’em ups that inspired it, Streets of Red: DDD now offers players the opportunity to see their name up in lights next to all the best and brightest competitors around the world.

If you don’t already own a copy, from the 31st October until 20th November, Streets of Red will be available for 30% off its regular price of $8.99.

If you would like to know more about the game, Secret Base will also be hosting a special Reddit AMA on r/NintendoSwitch from 10am-3pm EST on Halloween.

Explore The Quirky Hand-Drawn Worlds Of Hidden Folks On Nintendo Switch, Out Next Week

The interactive hidden object landscapes of Hidden Folks will soon be headed to Nintendo Switch, it has been confirmed, with the game arriving on the eShop next week.

Previously released on Steam, iOS, and Android, and actually taking home the Game of the Year 2017 award from the App Store, Hidden Folks has you, rather literally, searching around for some hidden folks. A strip of targets shows you what to look for – and you can tap one of these targets for a hint – and if you manage to find enough folks, you’ll be able to unlock the next area.

Everything in Hidden Folks is “drawn by hand, scanned in, placed, layered manually, animated, and scripted”. As you can tell from the trailer above, all sounds in the game are mouth-made, too, with the developers creating the entire soundtrack from a collection of weird and wonderful noises. Developer, Adriaan de Jongh, tells us that the game “plays equally well, if not better”, on Nintendo Switch than previous platforms.

Features:
– 25+ hand-drawn areas
– 250+ targets to find
– 1600+ mouth-originated sound effects
– 400+ unique interactions
– 3 colour modes: normal, sepia, and night mode

The game will be playable in all TV, handheld, and tabletop modes, and all previous content will be included when the game launches on 31st October. You’ll be able to grab a copy for $14.99 / €14,99 (with a 20% launch discount also available).

What do you think of this quirky little puzzler? Are you thinking of giving this one a go when it launches next week? Let us know down below.

Rage In Peace Is “An Extraordinarily Deep Rage Game”, And It’ll Smash Up Your Switch Next Month

“What would you do if today is your last day to live?” That’s the question posed by Rage in Peace, an action-adventure platformer arriving on Switch in just a couple of weeks’ time.

You’ll be playing as Timmy Malinu, an emotionally numb 27-year-old actuary who arrives at his office to discover that he will die – by having his head chopped off, no less – on this particular day. Now that really is a bad day at the office. Unfortunately, Timmy receives no details on when, where, or what will kill him and the grim reaper, who bears the news, offers a hand to help him cheat his death so that he can fulfil his one and only dream of dying peacefully in his pyjamas.

Doing this won’t be easy, however, as Timmy needs to avoid all of the many deadly traps and obstacles that mysteriously appear to prevent him from completing his task. You’ll need to memorise trap layouts and have an awful lot of patience to be successful in this one, with just a jump and a double jump standing between you and certain death.

The game is described as “an extraordinarily deep rage game”, with its multiple deaths making you want to throw your Switch across the room every time you fail, while also making you reflect on the very meaning of life as you play. We’ve gathered a list of game features and a second trailer for you below.

Features:
– A test of your memorization skill; Many “surprises” awaits as you go forward
– Beautiful, deep story about life, death, and acceptance that you would not want to miss
– Colourful, comical setting that will entertain you as death comes every few seconds
– Ear pleasing songs created in collaboration with various indie bands that will accompany your journey with Timmy

Rage in Peace launches on Nintendo Switch on 8th November. Will you be checking this one out?
