YouTube Has Officially Arrived On Nintendo Switch

The rumours were true, folks! YouTube is officially available on Nintendo Switch.

Just last week, a listing for the online video streaming service was spotted on the ‘game recommendations’ page of Nintendo’s official website. While it seemed extremely likely that the service was set to launch sometime this week, it hadn’t been confirmed until now.

You can now find an app for YouTube on the Nintendo Switch eShop (at present you’ll have to manually search for it), and it appears to be available worldwide. The download only takes up a tiny 89 MB of space, supports both traditional controllers and touchscreen input, and looks almost identical in design to the YouTube app also available on PlayStation 4.

The app can be downloaded for free, and users do not need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to access it.

Video: Sega Producer Takashi Iizuka Talks Team Sonic Racing At The Tokyo Game Show 2018

Team Sonic Racing may have missed 2018, but we’ve still got hope that it will live up to expectations when it does eventually arrive, purely because we loved Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and still do.

Sega has now released a special video featuring series producer Takashi Iizuka discussing the game at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. You can watch it up there.

In the video, Iizuka explains the inspiration for the game’s unique team-based racing system, and shows off courses such as Wisp Circuit, Ice Mountain and Market Street. He also spends a little time talking about the character class types – Speed, Technique and Power – which allow you to create a balanced team, apparently.

Have a watch and let us know if you’re still excited about this upcoming Switch speed-fest by posting a comment below. We’re still crossing our fingers and toes that it will shape up, even if what we played at EGX was pretty depressing.

Nintendo Is Currently Recruiting For A New 3D Legend Of Zelda Game

A couple of job listings have appeared on Nintendo’s Japanese website, revealing that the gaming development giant is looking for staff to help work on a new 3D The Legend of Zelda title.

At the time of writing, two job listings have been posted online – one for a 3D computer graphics designer, and one for a level designer. As well as needing to be able to communicate in Japanese (the jobs are based at Nintendo’s Kyoto headquarters), the listings show that staff will need to work on terrain design for dungeons, level design, concept art, world visualisation, game events, enemy planning, and more.

If you’re nosey like us, you might also be interested to know that the hiring process consists of interviews, portfolios, and exams, and each applicant can earn between 3.8 to 8.1 million yen a year depending on experience (which equates to roughly £25,000 / $33,000 – £54,000 / $71,000 without thinking about differences in cost of living).

Of course, we’ve known that a new Zelda game has been in the works for some time, and it would be safe to assume that future titles for the series are likely being thought about at all times. With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild going on to be such a raging success last year, it would also be safe to assume that a new game could follow suit with a similar design, but the series has often tended to shift direction regardless of its current popularity so it would be impossible to know for sure.

What would you like to see from the next Legend of Zelda game? A Breath of the Wild 2, or something completely different? Let us know down below.

Early Detective Pikachu Movie Screening Receives Very Positive Reaction, Features “Great Surprises”

If you’re a fan the Pokémon franchise, you’re probably aware that a new movie based on the 3DS game Detective Pikachu is set to hit cinemas next year. You might also be aware that movies based on video games are notorious for being pretty terrible, with the majority of silver screen adaptation attempts now rightfully forgotten and never to be spoken of again. Luckily, it seems that ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’ is about to break that trend in style.

An early screening for the movie was held recently, despite the film still actually being in its post-production process, and initial murmurings suggest that this could actually be something rather special. According to a report by SuperBroMovies, sources have revealed that the film is “jam-packed with easter eggs, good performances, and a great script”, impressing its audience despite its unfinished state.

The report goes on to say that Ryan Reynolds – who is portraying Pikachu in the film – stands out as a highlight with his “usual charm” shining through; the chemistry between Reynolds and Justice Smith (Tim Goodman in the movie) has also been praised. Elsewhere, while it has yet to be finished, the CGI is said to be “very well done” with Pikachu and the gang taking on a “hyper-realistic” appearance said to be similar to Rocket Racoon in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

As a final interesting note, it appears that hardcore fans of the series can expect an impressive cast of Pokémon characters with some “great surprises” appearing throughout (we assume this means that we can expect to see more than just Pikachu, Charmander, and all the old favourites). Despite this, the general consensus suggests that the film’s storytelling and setting are strong enough without the fan service being the only selling point.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is scheduled to arrive in theatres on 10th May 2019 and, if these early impressions are anything to go by, it could well be worth the wait.

Are you excited for the movie? Will you check it out when it releases next year? Let us know with a comment below.

Nintendo Secures More Smartphone Trademarks, This Time For Zelda: Twilight Princess And Wii Sports Resort

A short time ago, we reported on the news that Nintendo had secured trademarks for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Mario Vs. Donkey Kong which covered applications such as a ‘program for home video game machine’, ‘downloadable video game program’ and ‘program for smartphone’.

Well, Nintendo is at it again, this time with trademarks for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wii Sports Resort. The applications cover the same three areas as before.

As we said previously, this could simply be Nintendo renewing its trademarks to keep them valid, but the inclusion of a smartphone entry gives us enough reason to speculate that the company could be preparing these esteemed classics for the mobile treatment.

Square Enix Reports $33 Million Loss After New Studio Shifts Focus

Following the success of Octopath Traveler on Switch, the latest financial results for Japanese publisher Square Enix have revealed things aren’t as rosy as they might appear to be. The company reported a $33 million loss (¥3.73 billion) which was primarily linked to the new studio – Luminous Productions – shifting focus.

According to Games Industry, the studio’s plan to create “other entertainment content” was dropped – with attention returning to large-scale and high-quality AAA game production. The losses didn’t end there, as the company reported declines across the board over the six month period. Net sales, operating income and ordinary income all suffered significant drops. Square Enix’s Digital Entertainment segment experienced decreases as well.

The biggest video game releases over this period for Square Enix included Octopath Traveller and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, official sales figures for these titles were not revealed. The publisher’s rough period was also linked to a decrease in licensing income and a poor performance in the mobile and PC space.

Video: Learn How To Be Victorious In The Switch Version Of Civilization VI

Civilization VI isn’t the easiest of games to play and considering this is a genre and series that doesn’t often make its way to consoles, it’s easy to understand why Firaxis games and Nintendo are running video episodes for the upcoming release, teaching viewers how to play.

In the latest episode, we learn how to be victorious. It’s as simple as declaring war against other civilizations and then capturing their capital cities. Alternatively, you can resort to a more peaceful method – like recruiting artists, musicians and more to attract tourists and earn a cultural victory. You can also strive for a religious or scientific victory – where you either convert the world to a certain faith or go above and beyond to beat the opposition in the technology race.

Take a look at the video below, and also be sure to check out episode one and two if you missed them.

Will you be playing Civilization VI when it arrives on 16th November? Are you enjoying these episodes so far? Tell us below.

Devolver Digital Won’t Release Mother Russia Bleeds In Australia, Due To Unapproving “Government Folk”

Earlier this week, Devolver Digital announced it was bringing the “super-violent” multiplayer brawler Mother Russia Bleeds to the Switch eShop on 15th November. If you watched the gameplay trailer, you will have no doubt noticed the graphic nature of the title including references to drug use.

In an unexpected update, Devolver Digital has issued a tweet revealing the game won’t be released in Australia or New Zeland on Nintendo Switch. It’s all to do with the local Classification Board and its disapproval of certain themes in video games. It’s worth noting, it’s not actually clear if the game has been banned, or if the publisher is avoiding the inevitable.

As Kotaku explains, existing console versions of this game have received an M rating from America’s ESRB. This roughly aligns with the M or MA15+ rating in Australia and New Zealand. PEGI has Mother Russia Bleeds down as an 18+ rating.

In 2013, Australia passed an R18+ rating for video games, with the aim to reduce the number of bans. Despite this rating being introduced, the bans have continued – with drug references and implied sexual violence the most common reason games are refused. While the Switch release of Mother Russia Bleeds is seemingly off-limits locally, the Steam version is apparently still available to access as it has not gone through the local classification process.

Australia’s long-time history banning games has seen titles like South Park: The Stick of Truth refused for depicting sexual violence and Saints Row IV banned for containing drug use incentives. Outlast 2 was also originally refused for implied sexual violence and even Sega’s House of the Dead: Overkill Extended Cut from back in the day was banned due to excessive violence. All of these games were resubmitted (with edits even made to some) and eventually received classification.

In saying this, this is only a handful of cases over the years. Many other games have been banned and publishers have often decided not to resubmit. This includes Devolver Digital’s very own 2015 release Hotline Miami 2, which was banned for depicting sexual violence and was never released in Australia.
