Combat Test Snapshot 3

Jeb has put out another combat snapshot for you all to play with and give feedback.

You can find the original announcement here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/dq2v7o/updated_combat_test_snapshot_number_3_and_a/

Changes made:

  • Returned Sword speed to 3.0 (from 2.5)

  • Re-introduced hold-to-attack, but attacks now happen at “120%” charge which is slightly slower than optimal spam clicking

  • Knockback resistance is now a scale instead of a dice roll (less RNG)

  • Axes now always disable shields for 1.6s, instead of a 25% chance to disable them for 5s (less RNG)

  • Axes now only take 1 durability damage for attacking

  • Axes now have a new “Chopping” enchantment that adds +1 damage and +.5s shield stun per level (max 3 levels)

  • Projectiles no longer trigger the invulnerability timer, which means that a Multishot crossbow can hit (and deal damage) with all three arrows

  • Shields protective arc has been decreased to ~100 degrees instead of 180 degrees

  • Added a “Shield Indicator” option that displays when the shield is active (similar to the attack indicator)

  • Added an option to hide the shield when it’s active

Additional notes:

The Chopping enchantment is experimental. You can still apply Sharpness to axes in the anvil, but Sharpness and Chopping are mutually exclusive. An option here is to change Chopping so that it only affects shields, and let axes get Sharpness from enchanting, but currently there are no mobs in the game that use shields so in that case Chopping would be meaningless in PvE.

The delay to auto-attacking will likely be removed when we add the system to Bedrock for controllers and touch. It may be a mouse-and-keyboard only limitation.

Installation instructions:

  • Download this zip file: https://launcher.mojang.com/experiments/combat/0f209c9c84b81c7d4c88b4632155b9ae550beb89/1_14_combat-3.zip

  • Unpack the folder into your “versions” folder of your local Minecraft application data folder (see below if you are confused)

  • Create a new launch configuration in the launcher and select the “1_14_combat-3” version

  • Start the game and the remaining files will be downloaded

  • Play in a new world! This version is not compatible with other snapshots! (These are based on the 1.14 branch and doesn’t include any bug fixes or features in the mainline snapshot series.)

COMBAT TEST MAP

The team has created a map for testing combat mechanics! Download it here: https://launcher.mojang.com/experiments/combat/5b0f9b66f0ece20b0a0305db7729c6b0a66ee3d3/Combat%20Test%20Map.zip

Here’s what you’ll find in each of the sections of the map:

  • A weapon test area where you can test out weapon range, new enchants, shield mechanics, etc.

  • A Vanilla gameplay challenge area with portals into iconic Minecraft encounters

  • PvP and PvE battle arenas

Feel free to give feedback on the map as well!

FEEDBACK SITE

In addition to replying on reddit, you can head over to the feedback site to discuss specific topics here: https://aka.ms/JavaCombatSnap

Please note any combat designs or features within the combat snapshots and maps may or may not appear in an upcoming final release. As usual, we recommend keeping an eye on our release changelogs for details.

Minecraft: Java Edition 1.15 Snapshot 19W36A

Another week has gone by and we’re busy trampling bugs here at the Mojang office. Apart from that we’re now letting everyone take part of our obfuscation maps which should make your life easier if you’re interested in creating mods for Minecraft: Java Edition.

You can find the full news post on Minecraft.net

  • Obfuscation maps are now published with all future releases of the game
  • Added features found in other Minecraft editions
  • Honey bottles are now less filling
  • Fixed bugs

MODDING

In an effort to help make modding the game easier, we have decided to publish our game obfuscation maps with all future releases of the game, starting today. This means that anyone who is interested may deobfuscate the game and find their way around the code without needing to spend a few months figuring out what’s what. It is our hope that mod authors and mod framework authors use these files to augment their updating processes that they have today. These mappings will always be available, instantly and immediately as part of every newly released version. This does not, however, change the existing restrictions on what you may or may not do with our game code or assets. The links to the obfuscation mappings are included as part of the version manifest json, and may be automatically pulled for any given version.

Prefixed to every obfuscation map is the following legal disclaimer:

© 2019 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. This information is provided “as-is” and you bear the risk of using it. This information does not provide you with any legal rights to any intellectual property in any Microsoft product. You may copy and use this information for your internal, reference purposes. Microsoft makes no warranties, express or implied, with respect to the information provided here.

Minecraft: Java Edition 1.15 Snapshot 19W34A

BEES!

Bzzzzzzz, bzz, bzzzzzz. Bzz bzzzzz bzzzzzz.

Minecraft 1.15 has had it’s first snapshot, and this one adds bees. This snapshot also includes bee nests and hives for those little bees to live in, and honeycombs. I’ve not been able to play with this snapshot, but honey is always nice.

On the technical side, Java Edition now requires OpenGL 2.0. If you have a computer that’s at least not 10 years old, you should be okay.

Loot tables have a new function called copy_states, which copies states. I mean, what else would you expect?

You can start playing this snapshot by selecting it in your launcher. The server jar is located here: https://launcher.mojang.com/v1/objects/288962c67d083e35d4313cf0eba8ad1e27173d17/server.jar

(Don’t you love having to write news when you can’t open Minecraft!).

Why don’t you show some of the bees in action, or if you’re a more… savvy player, show some of the new dispenser or loot table functionality?

UPDATE

Mojang has posted their blog post about this update, which has more information about these changes.

You can find the full post here: https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-snapshot-19w34a

We’re buzzing with excitement!

Can someone tell Cory to stop making bee puns now?

  • Bees are cute, fuzzy, neutral mobs
  • Don’t hurt them, they don’t want to hurt you
  • If a bee does sting you, it will leave its stinger in you and eventually die, dropping nothing :(
  • Bees love pretty flowers and spend their lives gathering pollen from them
  • After gathering pollen, bees fly back to their home nest
  • Bees help you by growing crops while carrying pollen back to the nest
  • Bees can be bred using flowers
  • Bees like sharing the location of their favorite flowers with other bees
  • If a bee can’t find nectar, after a while it will return home for a bit
  • If a bee doesn’t have a home nest, it will wander around until it finds one it can use
  • Bees don’t like the rain and they sleep at night. They will go back to the nest in these cases

In real life, bees dance in their nests to show other bees where flowers are!

  • Bee Nests spawn naturally in Flower Forests, Plains, and Sunflower Plains biomes
  • When a bee visits this block and completes its journey undisturbed, the level of honey increases
  • Max of 5 levels of honey
  • Level 5 is quite…sticky
  • Bees use nests and hives to share flower locations with other bees
  • Sometimes bees that already know about a flower will choose not to use this information
  • Bee Hives are crafted by players using honeycomb and wood planks
  • Use a silk touch tool to get the block with the bees stored inside
  • Bee Nests will be destroyed unless you use silk touch
  • Use shears when at full honey to get honeycomb
  • Use a bottle when at full honey to get a honey bottle
  • Campfire smoke calms bees – place one underneath the nest / hive to keep them in chill mode
  • Redstone-friendly!
  • Bees like Bee Nests and Bee Hives the same amount! They don’t play favorites :)
  • Added the Honey Bottle!

Organic, gluten-free, delicious locally-farmed honey!

  • Use an empty glass bottle on a hive or nest that is full of honey to get a bottle of honey!
  • Drink it!
  • ???
  • Profit!
  • Oh yeah, also craft it into sugar!
  • Added Honeycomb!

Disclaimer: Cannot be used to comb your hair

  • Shear a full-honey hive or nest to obtain
  • Craft with wood planks to create a Bee Hive
  • Dispensers can now fill bottles with water and honey
  • Dispensers can now shear honey combs from Bee Nests and Hives

COPY_STATE

Copies state properties from dropped block to BlockStateTag in dropped item

  • block – source of properties (block id)

Minecraft and RTX

Yesterday, Mojang announced the future of the rendering engine for Minecraft (Java Edition is not included in this list).

You can find their full announcement here, which also includes screenshots:

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/render-dragon-and-nvidia-ray-tracing

Minecraft is on so many platforms, and the great thing about that is that it opens up so many fun possibilities about how we can change the experience for each one. We added touch controls when we developed the mobile version, put you inside Minecraft on Gear VR, and enabled multiplayer across consoles and devices with our Better Together update!

Today we’re announcing two new ways we’re taking advantage of existing and updating hardware. One, we’re expanding the scope of Minecraft on bedrock platforms with our new engine, Render Dragon. Second, we’re pushing the graphical possibilities of the game by partnering with NVIDIA to bring real-time ray tracing to Minecraft. Prepare your eyes!

NVIDIA RAY TRACING

We couldn’t be more excited to take advantage of the new ray tracing technology from NVIDIA. It’ll be playable on Windows 10 with devices that are capable of DirectX R, such as with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU (and we plan to expand it to future platforms that support DirectX R raytracing).

With the capabilities of this tech, you’ll be able to experience your Minecraft worlds with realistic lighting, vibrant colors, , realistic water that reflects and refracts naturally, and emissive textures that light up. What does ‘emissive’ mean? It means you’re about to see Minecraft like you’ve never seen it before!

Well, actually, ‘emissive’ is a technical adjective that means ‘having the power to radiate something, especially light, heat, or radiation’ but shhh don’t ruin the moment — watch the below video of ray tracing in action instead:

We’ll have more news to share later this year, as well as the technical requirements. Naturally, we want your feedback through every step of this process. That’s why we plan to enable you to preview the new ray tracing features by turning on “Optional graphics with RTX” in the settings screen of Minecraft in a future beta. You can expect that feature in the new year. We also plan to enable some of these new features, such as improved emissivity and directional lighting, on other Bedrock platforms! Speaking of which…

RENDER DRAGON

You’ll see individual Minecraft Bedrock platforms update in the months ahead as we learn the capabilities of our lovely new game engine, Render Dragon. You may have already seen a preview of Render Dragon in action if you watched Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference on-stage when we demoed Minecraft Earth.

It featured edge highlighting and new lighting techniques, which is just the start of the visual and performance upgrades we’re planning to make with Render Dragon. Render Dragon supports a range of graphics features, depending on what your device is capable of. Not all devices will support ray tracing, but we will have some graphics enhancements on most devices.  Again, it’s all about taking advantage of different hardware to offer the smoothest Minecraft experience possible, no matter what device you’re playing on!

We’ll have more news to share soon, so you can start trying out new ways to play!

Java Edition: Combat Snapshot 2 and MCF updates

Jeb has posted a new combat snapshot over on Reddit.

If you missed the original snapshot, you can find it’s Reddit post here.

Below is the post he made, explaining some of the changes made along with how to get this snapshot to try it out.

Feedback for this should be posted on their dedicated feedback page located here: https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/topics/360001335672-Java-Combat-Snapshot

These are the edits in this version:

  • Decreased attack speed of swords

  • Attacking while crouching will now disable the shield during the attack

  • Shields protect against critical attacks again

  • Removed auto-attacking by holding the button

  • Fixed creative mode bugs

  • Fixed scale of the hotbar attack indicator

Some clarifications:

  • The theme of the next major update will be announced at MINECON. These combat tests are done in parallel and will be included when they’re good enough (i.e. the next theme is not “combat update”)

  • Weapon reach is always active (not only for special attacks), but during special attacks the reach is increased by an additional half a block

  • Hold to auto-attack will always be enabled for controller and touch

Installation instructions:

Finding the Minecraft application folder:

  • Windows: Press Win+R and type %appdata%.minecraft and press Ok

  • Mac OS X: In Finder, in the Go menu, select “Go to Folder” and enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft

  • Linux: ~/.minecraft or /home/<your username>/.minecraft/

Once you have the launcher set up you can download the server files from there as well.

Cheers!

In site news, you may have noticed that the site is a bit quicker to load (in places). Magic Find has been helping to resolve some of the issues that have plagued the site. They have done some changes which should hopefully mean that the site will load quicker for you and will not have to download as much to get you to your favorite threads.

They have also implemented a change which should fix the long running issue preventing you from viewing your old PMs. If you still have any problems viewing your messages however, please let us know so that we can investigate.

They are still aware of other issues with the site and will be looking at resolving those issues in future updates.
