Apple in talks to buy streaming rights to upcoming James Bond film ‘No Time to Die’

Apple TV may soon be the place to watch a long-delayed James Bond film, should the parent company decide to skip the film’s theatrical release.

Apple is said to be bidding on an upcoming James Bond flick, titled “No Time to Die,” hoping to bring the movie exclusively to Apple TV+.

Earlier this year, Apple purchased Tom Hanks’ World War II film, “Greyhound,” when it was apparent that a theater release would be impossible.

The Bond franchise is owned by MGM, and according to Binged, the company likely feels pressure to sell the film to the highest bidder. Many would-be theater releases have taken to releasing films on streaming platforms in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to Apple, Netflix is said to be in the running to purchase the upcoming Bond film.

How to charge AirPods and AirPods Pro

No, you can’t charge AirPods without a case. There’s a lot of peculiar advice online about charging AirPods, AirPods Pro and their case, so here is exactly what actually works.

If you found this article because you Googled the phrase, “how to charge AirPods without case,” then you are far, far from alone — but someone’s lied to you. Whoever has told you that you can do this, no matter how convincing they were, it’s a lie.

We got some popcorn and had a quite good time watching some YouTube videos that purported to show you how to charge AirPods or AirPods Pro like this. You can watch for quite some time thinking that this is a gag, and that they’re going to confess any moment now, but invariably it is actually brazen deceit.

They’re trying to get you to do something you really shouldn’t. And the video having sixty comments saying it works brilliantly is only evidence that you can hire bots to say anything.

The most common thing we’ve seen is that you can charge without a case by — wait for this — downloading a certain app and using it to illegally download other apps. Don’t do this.

Such instructions are always stridently insistent that it only works if you then, for instance, play two games you’ve downloaded. Call us cynical, but we have physics on our side, and they don’t even have alchemy.

Let us be unmistakably plain. It is impossible for a consumer to charge an AirPod without a charging case.

There are, though, two ways to charge your AirPod case — and if you allow us a little stretch — there are also two ways of charging AirPods or AirPods Pro.

How to charge AirPods case

Every pair of AirPod sold comes with a charging case, and there are two types of those. Both types can be charged by plugging a cable into their Lightning connector.

You might use a USB-C cable, you might use a regular USB-A one, but whatever it plugs into at the power end, it connects with Lightning on the AirPods case.

The other way of charging an AirPods case is wirelessly. You have to have an Apple Wireless Charging Case, which you do get by default with the AirPods Pro. It’s an option for the regular AirPods.

Then you also need a Qi charger to place them on. A flat one is best, rather than a vertical one that is usually used for charging a phone. That’s because typically a phone vertical one is at a slight angle with a shelf for the phone to sit on, and this arrangement puts the phone right next to the charging plate.

An AirPods charging case will sit on the Qi charger’s shelf, but the small size of the case means that it is unlikely to be positioned atop the charging plate.

You've as much chance charging with this song than with some of the ideas we've heard.

You’ve as much chance charging with this song than with some of the ideas we’ve heard.

If you don’t have an AirPods charging case, you only have one alternative

The way to charge your AirPods, the actual earbuds themselves, is to place them in the charging case. That’s it, accept no substitutes.

Except, if you’re running out of battery charge, it is possible — only possible, not remotely certain — that an Apple Store will let you charge up using one of their cases. In the past, we’ve sat in Apple Stores charging up our iPhones and wondering how salespeople aren’t wafting iPads under our noses.

Of course, finding an open Apple Store worldwide can be a challenge, more so in the US. Your chances are even lower now than they will be when things return to normal.

We didn’t say it was a great option. But it is an option, and that is more than you can say for any claim that you can charge without a charging case.

iPhone 12 ‘supercycle’ increasingly likely based on supply chain trends

Analyst firm Wedbush is seeing increasingly bullish trends from its Apple supply chain checks, giving the bank increased confidence in an iPhone 12 “supercycle thesis.”

In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider, Wedbush lead analyst Daniel Ives writes that the bank’s technology, media, and telecom (TMT) team has been performing updated checks on Apple’s supply chain in the wake of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro launch.

Ives says the supply chain is now expecting to produce 80 million iPhone 12 units in the initial launch period, with a stretch goal in the mid-80 million range. That’s higher than the 75 million units heading into the Oct. 13 keynote event, and up from 65 to 70 million units predicted in September.

“We have not seen a launch uptrend such as this in a number of years for Apple and the only iPhone trajectory similar would be the iPhone 6 in 2014 based on our analysis,” the analyst writes.

Based on iPhone lead times and the supply chain checks, Ives believes that preorders are tracking two times the iPhone 11 lineup. That suggests a “robust start out of the gates” for the iPhone 12.

Prior to the iPhone 12 announcement, Ives expected the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max device to be the flagship of the lineup. The bank’s recent supply chain checks seem to corroborate this, as Ives says Apple and its suppliers are continuing to anticipate stepped-up demand for the model.

That is raising the overall iPhone expectations heading into the actual launch. Although iPhone 12 Pro models are already shipping, the iPhone 12 Pro Max becomes available to preorder on Nov. 6 alongside the iPhone 12 mini.

Lastly, Ives reiterates that China will be a “key ingredient” for this iPhone launch. Worldwide, there are still about 350 million out of 950 million iPhone units in the upgrade opportunity window. “We believe this will translate into an unprecedented upgrade cycle for Apple,” Ives writes.

The bank is maintaining its $150 12-month AAPL price target, based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation on its 2021 fiscal estimates. Broken down, that’s based on a 15x multiple to Services at about $900 billion and a 7.3x multiple on Apple’s hardware business at $1.7 trillion.

Shares of AAPL were trading at $116.87 on Tuesday morning, up 0.77% in intra-day trading.

New and classic Charlie Brown & Snoopy series to exclusively stream on Apple TV+

Everything from brand-new animated “Peanuts” specials to the famous “A Charlie Brown Christmas” will stream exclusively on Apple TV+.

Following its Daytime Emmy-winning success with “Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10,” and its series “Snoopy in Space,” Apple TV has signed a new deal to bring more Charlie Brown to Apple TV+. Working with production companies including WildBrain and Peanuts Worldwide, Apple TV+ is to see a mix of new shows and classic specials.

Starting on October 19, those classics include “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” This Halloween show from 1966 will be stream for free from October 30 to November 1. Similarly, the 1973 “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” will be on Apple TV+l, and freely stream from November 25 to November 27.

Apple has not said whether the most famous “A Charlie Brown Christmas” will be made free to watch over the holidays. However, it has announced that the show will be streamed as an Apple TV+ exclusive on December 4.

This is specifically a streaming exclusive, so it’s not clear yet whether the show will continue to air on ABC as it traditionally does.

Alongside the classic series, the brand-new shows will include the previously-announced “The Snoopy Show.” This is due to launch on February 5, 2021, and Apple has also announced a second season of “Snoopy in Space.”

WildBrain, along with Imagine Documentaries, is also producing a new “Peanuts” 70th anniversary documentary for the streaming service.

UK updates laws banning iPhone use while driving

The government of the United Kingdom is updating its laws about using mobile devices while driving, closing loopholes that enabled some iPhone users to still use their smartphone behind the wheel for filming videos and other reasons.

The UK, like many other countries, has laws that try to prevent drivers from using smartphones and other devices while at the wheel, to minimize the number of distractions. While existing laws have helped cut down on mobile usage, there are still some that manage to get away with it due to the law’s wording.

In a law change that will be enacted in 2021, the BBC reports drivers won’t be able to pick up and use a mobile phone or satellite navigation system while driving. Drivers caught breaking the rules will have six penalty points applied on their driving license, and a 200 ($258) fine, with a loss of the license possible if the driver passed their driving test within the previous two years.

The law change is due to a loophole in the wording of existing laws that make it illegal to use a device “which performs an interactive communication” while driving, which is taken to mean phone calls and messaging systems. As smartphones can be used for many other purposes, this enabled some drivers to get around the law and escape prosecution.

For example, one man was found guilty of using his smartphone to film a car accident in North London in 2018, and was convicted in 2019. The man then went on to successfully appeal the ruling due to using it as a camera, which wasn’t technically against the law.

High Court judges criticized the 16-year-old law following the ruling, which prompted a reexamination and an update.

Under the new law, drivers in the UK will still be permitted to use their iPhones, but will have to do so using existing hands-free methods, such as Bluetooth systems or placing the iPhone in a holster. In some cases, such as using an iPhone to pay for goods at a drive-thru restaurant, it would be permitted to hand-hold an iPhone, provided the user is safely parked beforehand.

Delivery dates already slipping for iPhone 12 Pro

A seemingly very busy pre-order period for Apple is being reflected in how the iPhone 12 Pro, in particular, is already seeing its estimated delivery dates moving back across the world.

The Apple Store didn’t start taking pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro until some minutes after the advertised 08:00 ET time. Then it appears to have immediately been hit with more orders than can be fulfilled by the earliest delivery date of October 23.

Customers in the UK report that within three to four minutes, some models and configurations saw delivery dates slipping back one and then two weeks. US customers appear to have fared better, but worldwide it appears that Apple is already unable to keep up with initial demand on time.

AppleInsider has taken a snapshot of the delivery times as they stood two hours after pre-orders began. Different configurations of model, capacity, and so on will be different.

For a comparative sample, though, we’ve checked out delivery dates for the iPhone 12 in blue with 128GB, and the iPhone 12 Pro in blue with 256GB. These are both the middle configurations available, and we checked them across the US, UK, France, and Australia.

iPhone 12

The good news for US customers is that it’s still possible to get the iPhone 12 delivered by October 23, assuming you order soon. There is also an option for collecting in-store and a random sampling of possible stores from New York to Los Angeles is showing the same October 23 date, as of October 16, 10:40 AM. ET

In France and Australia, the date is no longer shown as October 23, but instead listed as 5-7 working days. That “working days” part is key, as it means the date may actually have slipped to Monday 26.

That’s still better than the situation in the UK. There the iPhone 12 is now available for delivery on November 2-9 at the earliest.

However, across France, Australia, and even the UK, the iPhone 12 remains officially available to be picked up in-store on October 23. For the moment.

Stores in France are still showing October 23 availability. Delivery has slipped back, however.

Stores in France are still showing October 23 availability. Delivery has slipped back, however.

iPhone 12 Pro

Again, American customers are fine. An iPhone 12 Pro ordered at time of writing will still arrive for delivery on October 23, and will also be in stores then.

Curiously, the iPhone 12 Pro in this middle configuration cannot be picked up at all from any of 20+ the UK stores we checked. It’s not clear whether it ever was, but right now the only way to get this model in the UK is to order it delivered.

And when you do that, currently the quoted delivery date is November 2-9. That’s between just over two weeks and just over three weeks later than October 23.

Both France and Australia are showing in-store pickup available on October 23, again in the stores we checked. However, delivery times for this model are now quoted as 2-3 weeks.

There’s no obvious reason why some territories will list specific dates, such as November 2-9, and others will state a number of weeks. It’s possible that it’s purely how each country prefers to show dates, or it could be that weeks are shown when it’s not yet precisely clear when an order will ship.

Apple’s research of charging coil use for haptic feedback could lead to thinner devices

Apple is exploring using the wireless charging coil on an Apple Watch to also provide haptic feedback, potentially leading to smaller and thinner wearables.

Current Apple wearables are outfitted with a charging coil assembly to allow for wireless charging. But that component only provides charging at this point, and Apple is developing technology that could allow it to serve a double purpose.

In a patent application titled “Electronic Device with Coil for Wireless Charging and Haptic Outputs,” published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Oct. 15, Apple details a way to use the inductive charging case as part of a device’s haptic actuator. Essentially, using the coil to provide haptic feedback.

“Using the same coil for both wireless battery charging and haptic output operations may help reduce the size and weight of devices, as a common component may be leveraged for multiple uses,” Apple notes of the potential for the technology.

A figure depicting the dual-purpose haptic and charging system. Credit: Apple

A figure depicting the dual-purpose haptic and charging system. Credit: Apple

However, traditional coils used in wireless charging systems aren’t automatically suitable for a haptic actuation system. Apple writes that “the positioning of magnets, ferromagnetic materials, or ferrite, which may be used as part of a haptic output system, when positioned proximate a conventional charging coil, may be detrimental to the operation of the charging system.”

To mitigate that, the patent envisions a system that could operate in different modes. Although the coil itself would be shared between the two devices, the patent notes that each system — both haptic actuation and wireless charging — could have dedicated components. Both systems would provide their respective function with the shared components.

In a charging mode, the coil would be “configured to inductively couple to an output coil … of the external charging device … in order to receive power from the output coil.” In haptic output mode, it would operate in conjunction with the haptic output system to “cause, trigger, initiate, or otherwise produce a haptic output.”

As far as how it would do, the patent contends that the coil be energized “in a manner that causes a haptic actuator component to produce a haptic output,” whether through magnetic attraction, reluctance forces, or similar forces.

Interestingly, the patent doesn’t stop at smartwatches, and points out that a similar system could be used on an iPhone or iPad. Apple just recently announced its new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models, which sport a MagSafe feature that brings Apple Watch-like wireless charging to the company’s handsets.

The patent lists Benjamin G. Jackson; Brenton A. Baugh; Brian T. Gleeson; Steven J. Taylor; and Thayne M. Miller as its inventors. All have been involved in Apple haptic and Taptic Engine research in the past, including for devices like the iPhone and the Apple Pencil.

Apple files numerous patent applications weekly, and there’s no guarantee that the technology described in them will ever make it to market. Similarly, patent applications don’t give any indication when such features could arrive.
