If you’re a Tesla owner, employees might be sharing your camera recordings

Tesla

According to nine former Tesla employees, groups at Tesla routinely shared private — and often sensitive — videos and messages from customer car cameras.

Although Tesla’s privacy policy notes, “Your privacy is and will always be enormously important to us,” recent interviews by Reuters revealed the opposite. Between 2019 and 2022, groups of Tesla employees privately shared sensitive customer information via an internal messaging system.

Some recordings showed crashes and road-rage incidents. For example, a Tesla was seen in a video from 2021 driving at high speed in a residential area and hiding a child riding a bike.

An ex-employee said the video circulated “like wildfire” through private chats within a San Mateo, California Tesla office. And in another video, a former employee described how the recording showed a naked man approaching the vehicle.

Tesla’s privacy policy also states, “camera recordings remain anonymous,” but the ex-employees said they used a program at work that could show the locations of recordings and potentially discover where a Tesla owner lived.

“We could see inside people’s garages and their private properties,” said another former employee. “Let’s say that a Tesla customer had something in their garage that was distinctive, you know, people would post those kinds of things.”

Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk might not have been safe from some recordings. Three years ago, some employees found and shared a video of “Wet Nellie,” the white Lotus Esprit sub featured in the 1977 James Bond film, “The Spy Who Loved Me.”

Musk had purchased it at a 2013 auction, although it’s unknown whether he was aware of the video or that it was shared.

The ex-employees claimed that they didn’t keep the videos or images. Some also said they only saw sharing for work purposes, such as getting help from colleagues or supervisors.

Two former employees said they weren’t troubled by the sharing of photographs, claiming that customers had given their agreement or people had long ago given up any reasonable expectation of keeping personal data private. But three employees said the incidents did trouble them.

One said, “It was a breach of privacy, to be honest. And I always joked that I would never buy a Tesla after seeing how they treated some of these people.”

Another ex-employee said, “I’m bothered by it because the people who buy the car, I don’t think they know that their privacy is, like, not respected…We could see them doing laundry and really intimate things. We could see their kids.”

Regulator scrutiny

Tesla’s car camera system has generated controversy in previous years. For instance, some government compounds and residential neighborhoods banned Teslas out of concern about the cameras.

And in February, the Dutch Data Protection Authority concluded an investigation into Tesla over possible privacy violations with “Sentry Mode,” a feature that can record any suspicious activity when a vehicle is parked and alert the owner.

However, the regulator found that rather than Tesla, it was the vehicle owners who were legally responsible for the recordings.

For regulators in the US, a spokesperson for the FTC told Reuters that the agency doesn’t comment on individual companies or their conduct. Musk didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Bitcoin whitepaper found hidden in macOS with unknown ‘Virtual Scanner II’ app

The Bitcoin whitepaper his hidden within macOS

Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin whitepaper can be found in any Mac running macOS Catalina or newer, but no one knows why.

Andy Baio, a blogger with an extensive history in the tech community, shared an odd discovery on his blog Waxy — the Bitcoin whitepaper can be found on any Mac running recent versions of macOS. It can be discovered via a simple Terminal command or by navigating Finder.

The user needs to navigate to the Macintosh HD -> System -> Library -> Image Capture -> Devices. Control-click on VirtualScanner.app and Show Package Contents, then open the Contents -> Resources folder -> simpledoc.pdf.

After some digging, Baio discovered that he wasn’t the first to find this hidden scanner or Bitcoin document. In 2021, an Apple Community post asked about it, and an odd photo taken on Treasure Island found in the Virtual Scanner II app.

Nintendo won’t be making any more ‘Super Mario’ games for iPhone

‘Mario Run’ wasn’t a big hit on mobile

Nintendo director and designer Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed Mario won’t be coming back to smartphones like iPhone.

In an extensive interview with Variety, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about mobile gaming and the future of Mario. While he didn’t have any announcements about upcoming titles, he confirmed Mario wouldn’t be returning to smartphones.

After $60 million of earnings from “Super Mario Run” in its first year, and $300 million generated for “Mario Kart Tour” since its 2019 debut, it was clear Mario wasn’t winning mobile. For comparison, “Mario Kart 8” has raked in $3 billion on the Nintendo Switch console.

“Having Mario games as mobile apps expands the doorway for far more audience to experience the game, and also expands the Mario gaming experience, where you only need your thumb on one hand,” said Miyamoto. Despite that, he also stated that “mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games.”

The franchise’s future is in question, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” coming to theaters Wednesday, April 5. While Miyamoto wouldn’t elaborate on where the character will appear next, it is clear it won’t be on mobile.

FlexiSpot Odin E7Q review: A heavy-duty standing desk

Review: FlexiSpot E7Q standing desk

AppleInsider may earn an affiliate commission on purchases made through links on our site.

The FlexiSpot Odin E7Q standing desk has enough muscle to lift heavy office equipment, so you can readily work on your feet throughout the day.

Using a standing desk is advantageous not just for health benefits but also for functionality. For example, you can use a standing desk to ensure that you incorporate movement throughout your workday or adjust the height of your workspace for various tasks.

For example, a photographer can unload bulky cameras and lenses on a table at an elevated height, then lower it while editing. Likewise, a DJ can sit at a desk to prepare a track list, then raise the desk to perform a set.

You’ll need ample space to hold everything if your work involves large and heavy gear, such as long camera lenses or DJ controllers. The table must also be sturdy enough to contain everything without you having to worry about your expensive items crashing to the ground.

The E7Q standing desk, also known as the Odin desk, is a top performer in FlexiSpot’s lineup of standing desks. The E7Q desk can be practical if you need a spacious workspace for a heavy desk setup.

FlexiSpot E7Q — a gentle heavy lifter

The FlexiSpot E7Q is the heavy-lifting big brother of other FlexiSpot standing desks, such as the Q8 and E7 Pro Plus. The maximum weight capacity for the FlexiSpot E7Q is 440 pounds, which is over 100 pounds more than the Q8 and E7 Pro Plus.

Choose a large tabletop for the FlexiSpot E7Q desk to hold bulky items like wide screens

Choose a large tabletop for the FlexiSpot E7Q desk to hold bulky items like wide screens

Not only can the FlexiSpot E7Q handle a substantial load, but it can also accommodate sizable items. According to FlexiSpot ‘s website, you can choose a tabletop dimension as large as 94.5 inches by 35.4 inches.

To test the E7Q desk, a digital artist’s work setup was used. Sprawled across the back was a 55-inch TV for storyboarding and reference photos. In front of that was a 23.8-inch Huion drawing tablet mounted to the desk.

Even with these sizable screens, there was plenty of room left to spread out a Mac Studio, an iPad Pro, and other accessories.

Depending on your work, you may not have wide screens. In that case, you can use the desk space for a shelf. Depending on your desk height, you can use the area underneath for a file cabinet.

With all your expensive gear on the standing desk, you want to ensure that your equipment is stable during the lifting and lowering of the desk. The E7Q desk has four legs instead of two and can provide more stability than two-legged desks.

To switch positions throughout your workday, you can adjust the height of the E7Q desk from 23.8 inches to 49.4 inches using the keypad. Additionally, you can save up to three height presets — stand, sit, and an extra one to use however you wish.

The FlexiSpot E7Q standing desk keypad allows for three height presets

The keypad is compact and generally stays out of the way, and it can be mounted on the left or right edge of the desk near a table leg. If your office chair has armrests, be careful not to damage the keypad by running into it with the armrest.

You can also use the keypad to turn on the anti-collision and set the collision sensitivity.

The anti-collision function is a safety feature that stops the desk from lowering when it detects an object in its path. The E7Q desk will also alert you with a beep if it senses an object in its pathway when the desk is ascending.

According to FlexiSpot, the lift speed of the E7Q desk is 1.5 inches per second, and the noise level is less than 50 decibels. All items on the desk were keenly observed for wobbling during lifting, but everything remained incredibly still as the table rose to new heights.

FlexiSpot E7Q — customization and assembly

Customization options are plenty with the E7Q desk. When you purchase the frame, you can choose your tabletop material and size in addition to add-ons such as monitor arms and cable-management accessories.

If you have an affinity for woodworking and want to source your desktop material, you can buy the standing desk frame alone to add the wood you choose.

For desktop materials, FlexiSpot lets you choose from chipboard, bamboo, or three kinds of solid wood made in the USA. There are eight looks to choose from if you want the chipboard material, such as graphite or marble.

Desktop sizes vary depending on the material you choose. The dark bamboo material had a smooth surface with a subtle sheen, and the table edge was conducive to mounting a monitor arm for a Huion graphics tablet.

Assembly is required for the FlexiSpot E7Q standing desk

Assembly is required for the FlexiSpot E7Q standing desk

Assembly is required and not for the fainthearted. The instructions were simple enough, but it took two people to assemble the broad tabletop and solid carbon steel legs.

The underside of the tabletop had pre-drilled pilot holes to make things easier. You’ll also get a screwdriver and hex key to use. However, a power drill is recommended, especially for attaching the heavy supporting beam to the tabletop.

FlexiSpot E7Q — usability

Once assembled, the E7Q desk was a joy to use because you can seamlessly switch working positions throughout the day. When your Apple Watch reminds you to stand up, press the stand button on the keypad to raise your desk gently but firmly to your preset height, then stand up and resume your work.

It would be a waste of money to buy a standing desk but stay seated at the desk all day. As a bonus incentive to get up and stretch your legs, you can use an anti-fatigue mat to promote blood circulation and comfort.

The DM1 anti-fatigue mat can give you extra incentive to work on your feet at your standing desk

The DM1 anti-fatigue mat can give you extra incentive to work on your feet at your standing desk

FlexiSpot offers two options for cushioned floor mats, such as the DM1 mat. This anti-fatigue mat is almost an inch thick and weighs over 7 pounds.

It has massage points that simulate a foot massage to keep your feet happy throughout your workday.

Despite the lack of storage drawers and the effort it took to assemble, FlexiSpot ‘s E7Q desk is a work investment worth considering. This gentle giant securely lifts your heavy office equipment with a push of a button, so you can continue working whether you want to sit or stand.

FlexiSpot E7Q — pros

  • Best for large and heavy gear — max tabletop size is 94.5 inches by 35.4 inches, max load capacity is 440 pounds
  • Sturdy four-legged design
  • Stable lifting and lowering
  • Three height presets
  • Anti-collision feature

FlexiSpot E7Q — cons

  • No storage
  • Assembly required

Rating: 4 out of 5

Where to buy

Shop the FlexiSpot Odin E7Q desk directly from their website. Prices start at $1,099.99 for the desk frame and legs, and prices vary depending on the desktop material and size you choose. You will find an array of accessories to customize your workstation – the DM1 anti-fatigue mat retails for $74.99.

Apple wins VirnetX patent appeal — but one verdict awaits

VirnetX trial

AppleInsider may earn an affiliate commission on purchases made through links on our site.

Apple has been battling VirnetX in court for over a decade over patents, and on Thursday, the US Court of Appeals handed Apple a victory in the latest skirmish.

In 2010, VirnetX launched a legal dispute by alleging numerous instances of patent infringement related to FaceTime, VPN, and iMessage services. A Texas court fined Apple $368 million in 2012 for violating one patent, but the ruling was overturned almost two years later.

In the most recent update, Apple convinced the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to invalidate the two patents by upholding a decision from the USPTO’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board, according to Reuters.

It might overturn the $502 million fine that Apple was ordered to pay in 2020. The company separately appealed that verdict, but the Federal Circuit still has to rule in that case.

“If the court upholds the [USPTO’s] decision, we have a big problem,” VirnetX attorney Jeff Lamken of MoloLamken said at the September hearing. “I don’t think we have an enforceable judgment.”

The case has gone through numerous appeals and rulings. With the Federal Circuit’s decision on Thursday, Apple and VirnetX await a final decision in Apple’s appeal of the initial verdict out of East Texas.

VirnetX had separately won a $302 million verdict against Apple in 2016, which was increased to $440 million later on.

Netflix Games may come to TVs, use iPhone as a controller

Netflix Games

AppleInsider may earn an affiliate commission on purchases made through links on our site.

A report suggests Netflix is working on a feature that will bring its games to smart TV platforms and could enable players to use their iPhones as a controller.

Netflix Games launched in 2021 with little fanfare since. The selection offers a variety of games, some inspired by Netflix properties, others seemingly random.

According to a report from Bloomberg, code within the Netflix app reveals that Netflix Games could soon come to TV sets, and the iPhone could act as a controller. So far, games have only been available on smartphones and tablets.

Using the iPhone as a controller isn’t a new concept. Apple changes the Apple Remote app into a simple game controller for select titles on Apple TV, and anyone who has played JackBox Games will be familiar with the idea.

It isn’t clear how this feature will be implemented. In our experience, digital buttons and analog sticks on a phone display you’re not looking at are less than ideal.

Find a list of available Netflix Games on the help page.

The Netflix Games concept isn’t too distant from Apple Arcade, which costs $5 per month or is included with Apple One. Customers who pay for a Netflix subscription get access to the games via their login.

AutoCAD gets native Apple Silicon support, boasts 2x speed jump

A MacBook Air with M2 processor

Engineering and design tool AutoCAD by Autodesk gains native support for Apple Silicon M-series processors in the 2024 release.

According to a press release from Autodesk, the Apple Silicon support is for both M1 and M2 series processors. The AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT apps still support Intel as well, but the Apple Silicon versions boast up to 2x performance improvements over the 2023 version.

“AutoCAD for Mac 2024 and AutoCAD LT for Mac 2024 deliver incredible, new performance improvements with the ability to run AutoCAD natively on Apple silicon,” says Dania El Hassan, Director of Product Management for AutoCAD, Autodesk. “It’s exciting to see how customers can now take full advantage of the latest hardware and M-series chips for faster ways to work.”
