HomePod now available for purchase in Japan and Taiwan

Apple has launched the HomePod in Japan and Taiwan, giving Apple fans the chance to snag the smart speaker for themselves.

Apple HomePod

The HomePod is now available to purchase in both Japan and Taiwan, following an announcement made on August 15.

Buyers can pick up their own HomePod either in brick-and-mortar Apple Stores, or purchase them from select mobile phone retailers.

In Japan, the HomePod retails for 32,800 yen ($310), and in Taiwan for NT$9,900 ($315). Users can purchase a HomePod in ether white or Space Gray.

When announced, the Japanese press release mentioned popular artists such as Aimyon and One OK Rock, whose music would be available to stream from Apple Music. Also mentioned are regional playlists, such as Apple Music’s Top 100: Japan.

The smart speaker debuted in the U.S., UK, and Australia in February 2018, a half-year after being shown at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference. Since then, Apple has expanded availability to China, Hong Kong, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, and Spain.

The HomePod is on track to receive some notable upgrades this fall with the release of iOS 13. The update list includes multi-user voice recognition, enhanced Shortcuts integration, and song Handoff with iPhone.

Like Apple Music, Spotify now offers a three month premium trial

Spotify has extended the free-trial period it offers for Spotify Premium from one month to three, the default length of Apple’s free trial for Apple Music.

Streaming giant Spotify is now offering three free months to anyone who has yet to try their service, according to a news post on their site.

“Beginning August 22, eligible users will receive the first three months on us for free when they sign up for any Spotify Premium plan,” says Spotify in a statement about the new trial. “You’ll unlock a world of on-demand access to millions of hours of audio content—no matter when you sign up, winter, spring, summer, or fall.”

The trial period currently only extends to individual and student plans and will roll out across Duo and Family in the coming months. The trial doesn’t extend to Headspace or anyone who is billed directly through their carrier, with the exception of those in Japan, Australia, China, and Germany.

Apple has been offering free three-month trials to Apple Music since it’s inception, though they may begin limiting their trial to one month. Apple had learned artists are wary of lengthy trial periods when Taylor Swift protested the three-month trial by withholding her album 1989 from the service. The protest earned artists the ability to be paid for track and album streams through the free trial period.

Students who sign up for Apple Music can get a free six-month trial by visiting Apple’s Support Page. After the trial ends, students pay $4.99 a month to continue their subscription until graduation, which works out to be about half the price of a standard subscription.

Like most other paid music subscriptions, Spotify Premium offers users the ability to listen ad-free, download music to their device, create playlists, skip tracks, and toggle between devices when listening.

Apple TV+ predicted to hit 12M subscriptions in 2020, 21M by 2021

Apple TV+, the iPhone maker’s upcoming video streaming service, is likely to achieve 12 million subscriptions by the end of 2020, analysts at Cowen suggest, with Apple breaking even in its original content production efforts if it reaches 10 million users.

Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard present

Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard present “See” at an Apple special event in March.

The long-awaited video subscription offering is expected to arrive in November and is rumored to cost $9.99 per month. For that cost, subscribers will be able to watch a swathe of content produced for the service, including the news drama “The Morning Show,” the Jason Momoa vehicle “See” and a reboot of Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories.”

To fund the productions, of which Apple has reportedly earmarked more than $6 billion in investments for the content catalog, Apple needs to secure a decent amount of subscribers in order to cover the costs.

According to a Cowen investor note seen by AppleInsider, analysts conservatively forecast total Apple TV+ subscribers of around 12 million for the full year of 2020, rising to 21 million by 2021. This is far below the figures of Netflix and Amazon, at over 150 million and 100 million respectively, but those are established services that have been around for years, while Apple is a newcomer to the field.

As additional context, Cowen notes Apple Music achieved a 10% penetration of approximately 3 million subscribers in its inaugural year, growing to 29% or 16 million in the second, and may reach 37% or 65 million by the end of 2019.

The rumored $9.99 price is in the same ballpark of Cowen’s estimates, which would be in line with Apple News+ as well as Amazon Prime Video’s $8.99 cost, while undercutting Netflix’s Standard and Premium offerings at $12.99 and $15.99, though higher than Hulu’s commercial-supported service at $5.99.

While there are “limited details” on pricing and content structure, Cowen assumes the figures based on Apple providing only intellectual property it owns or has rights no. While it could license content and second-run movies and shows in a similar manner to Netflix or Amazon, it is believed TV+ will be “relatively more focused on original source material due to higher margins and differentiating the service with curated content.”

Due to this assumption, it isn’t expected that the price of Apple TV+ will go above $20 per month, which would be more Apple entering the territory of a “multi-channel video programming distributor” if it did. “We believe if Apple were to include licensed content within the TV subscription itself, it could be from small scale providers that license at an attractive fee to Apple,” Cowen suggests, due to the 1.4 billion active devices that form Apple’s potential audience.

Based on having over 40 original TV, video series, movies, and other programs under development, Cowen estimates ten could air at launch, with more offered throughout 2020. The current slate of projects, including production and marketing costs, is thought to cost in the region of $2.8 billion.

As Netflix previously commented that over 90% of its streaming content is expected to be amortized within 4 years of its original release, a similar concept could apply to Apple. Using the $2.8 billion figure as an annual content cost run rate, the break even point is said to be a “high-single digit M subscriber level.”

For investors, Apple TV+ could help drive an incremental EPS rise of $0.20 to $0.25 for every 10 million additional subscribers on top of the conservative estimates. The baseline forecasts imply EPS contributions of $0.11 for 2020 and $0.32 for 2021.

States pushing forward on antitrust investigation of Apple, Google, Facebook, others

Following a July planning meeting with US Attorney General William Barr, individual states appear poised to launch their own antitrust investigations of big tech sooner rather than later.

US Attorney General William Barr recently speaking about encryption

US Attorney General William Barr recently speaking about encryption

Up to 20 states are said to be participating in the coordinated investigation, following a preliminary meeting in July. A formal announcement about the effort is expected before the end of September.

“The attorneys general involved have concerns over the control of personal data by large tech companies and will hold them accountable for anticompetitive practices that endanger privacy and consumer data,” a spokesman for New York Attorney General Letitia James told the Wall Street Journal.

When asked for comment, Google pointed to Congressional testimony in July. At the time, Google’s Director of Economic Policy Adam Cohen said that the company had “helped reduce prices and expand choice for consumers and merchants in the U.S. and around the world.”

Apple also pointed the Wall Street Journal to previous testimony.

The expansion and escalation follows the meeting with Barr that focused on “big tech companies stifling competition on the internet” according to Barr’s office. Companies that are reportedly being investigated are Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, and Facebook.

Eight state attorneys were reportedly in attendance, with four states positively identified as attending. For certain, representatives from Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and New York are involved in the probe.

The U.S. Department of Justice will also be holding a series of antitrust reviews into Facebook and Google, and their affect on competition in fields like search, social media, and online retail. There are also separate probes by the US DOJ into Apple and Amazon’s alleged monopolization, but elements may overlap with the new DOJ review.

The Federal Trade Commission has also been working on its own antitrust efforts since February, appointing a task force to monitor the industry.

Representatives from each of the four companies have already spoken to the House Judiciary Committee on the topic, with the House Antitrust Subcommittee investigating “platform gatekeepers” and “dominant firms.” The subject of antitrust has also been brought up in the 2020 Presidential race, with a break-up of big firms called for by Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

This is not the only technology-related area Barr has waded into as of late. On July 23, Barr rekindled the ongoing encryption debate, claiming encryption is “already imposing huge costs on society” by making it hard for law enforcement to investigate crimes, while also calling for tech firms to stop producing “dogmatic pronouncements” against backdoors and to instead produce them.

From August 17 and running through the week until August 25, purchases made using Apple Pay at any Apple Store, the Apple website, or the Apple Store app will make a donation to the National Parks Foundation. The Apple Pay website specifies it is a $10 donation per transaction with a minimum purchase of $10.

The promotion is also limited to the first 100,000 qualifying transactions, which means as much as $1 million could be headed to the National Parks Foundation.

The advisement that Apple is “celebrating our national parks” relates to the centenary of the Grand Canyon National Park, which was designated as a national park 100 years ago. The UNESCO World Heritage Site features the famous crevice and is the destination for approximately six million visitors each year.

Apple is also celebrating with a health-related achievement on August 25. Apple Watch owners are encouraged to walk a minimum of three miles, roughly the same distances as the beginner-friendly Cedar Ridge hike on the South Kaibab Trail at the Grand Canyon, in exchange for a special award.

Titanium and ceramic Apple Watch variants spotted in watchOS 6 beta

A pair of assets have been harvested out of the latest watchOS 6 beta, pointing to new Apple Watch models in ceramic and titanium coming in the fall.

Ceramic Apple Watch

Two new images contained in the most recent run of beta releases the Apple Watch clearly show titanium and ceramic model nomenclature. Data about the new models has been determined similar to how a September 10 date was extracted for the “iPhone 11” launch event.

The images, spotted by iHelpBR come from the on-boarding screens for the Apple Watch, and there are 40mm and 44mm versions. The images are from the animation that plays during initial Apple Watch setup.

After Apple cancelled the gold “Edition” model, the company used ceramic for the Series 2 and Series 3 models. However, Apple didn’t offer a ceramic model for the Apple Watch Series 4, and has never offered titanium.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in early 2019 that the material would make a return to the Apple Watch. Saturday’s revelations are the first time that titanium has been rumored as a casing material for the Apple Watch. More recently, Kuo has declared that the fall Apple Watch releases will have some screens sourced by Japan Display.

Beyond very small amounts in fabrication, the only other current Apple product that uses a lot of titanium is the Apple Card.

Apple demands review of Red’s Rawcode format patent

Apple has requested for a review to potentially invalidate a patent owned by high-performance camera maker Red relating to its proprietary Rawcode RAW recording format, a legal argument that could enable Apple to use Rawcode in its products without paying a licensing fee.

Red Raven camera kit

Filed on May 6, the petition from Apple to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office calls for an Inter Partes review of patent number 9,245,314 titled simply “Video Camera.”

The patent largely describes a camera that can “capture, compress, and store video image data in a memory of the video camera, but really it pertains more to Rawcode, Red’s format for holding RAW footage, unprocessed imaging data from the sensor. Apple believes that some of the claims of the patent are “unpatentable,” and that the patent itself should be invalidated.

Apple’s arguments start with how the patent does not provide “written description support” for some claims, such as the disclosure of “outputting the raw mosaiced image data at a resolution of at least 2k and at a frame rate of at least about 23 frames per second.” While the patent describes decompression and demosaicing algorithms, it “does not disclose image resolution or frame rate parameters, let alone a camera system capable of meeting such parameters.”

There is a lack of description of “mosaiced” image data, with it only referencing “demosaic” and other tenses of the term. There is also the argument of “Demosaiced Motion Video Data” being undefined properly, and the meaning of “Substantially Visually Lossless.”

The patent describes the memory device for the last phrase to be “sufficiently large to store image data from the compression module corresponding to at least about 30 minutes of video at 12 megapixel resolution, 12-bit color resolution, and at 60 frames per second.”

Apple notes there is no mention of the capacity of memory required for such a device, but based on the mention of a “compression ratio of at least six to one,” the company reckons there needs to be a total memory capacity of 324 gigabytes, a considerably high amount of data from the time of the patent’s creation.

Speaking to NewsShooter, Red Digital Camera president Jarred Land advised “This is standard operating procedure for patent holders. It’s not the first time someone has challenged the Redcode patents and each time our patents have held fast. Red fully anticipates its patents will be held valid again.”

Land also insisted “We have a fantastic relationship with Apple and as they publicly announced in June we continue to work on incredible things with them. “

The invalidation of the patent would provide a number of benefits to Apple, including being able to effectively use aspects of Rawcode in its products, or in its entirety, without paying a licensing fee to Red. It is also plausible that the patent review request is in response to legal action from Red against Apple, possibly over the iPhone maker’s ProRES RAW format.

The exact reason for Apple’s review request may not necessarily be known until more legal activity between the two companies comes to light.

Apple has previously sold Red camera bundles in its stores, with the 2017 Red Raven camera kit including the Raven camera body and everything needed to produce cinematic video for $15,000.

Apple facing iPhone challenges in SE Asia from price pressure

Apple’s iPhone is competing with considerably cheaper rivals in the Southeast Asia smartphone market, Canalys analysts advise, with approximately 62% of the region’s smartphone shipments stemming from Chinese-based smartphone brands.

Apple's iPhone XR

In the third quarter’s financial earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed the company “couldn’t be happier” with the improvements in revenue for China over the last two quarters, following a previous warning over low iPhone sales. While the company is seeing improvements, it is doing so in an environment where the market is flooded with cheaper and locally-produced rivals.

Analysis of the Southeast Asia smartphone market for the second quarter by Canalys reveals a small amount of growth year-on-year, with the 30.7 million shipments being a 2% improvement on the same period in 2018. The rise also reverses several quarters of decline for the market, with Southeast Asia also doing better than other parts of Asia and even Greater China.

The analysis concentrated on the top five smartphone brands, but Apple wasn’t among the list. Top of the pile was Samsung with 7.7 million units, seeing year-on-year growth of 5% after three quarters of decline, with Oppo gaining 49% year-on-year growth to reach second place with 7.3 million units.

Third was Vivo with 4.1 million units, and Xiaomi displaced Huawei to occupy the fourth spot with 3.7 million units. Xiaomi didn’t take fifth place, with that now held by newcomer Realme with 1.6 million units.

Apple’s main problem remains the vast amount of cheaper rival smartphones that are available on the market, offered at a fraction of the price of the premium iPhone lineup.

Chinese brands, including Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Realme, and Huawei, shipped a total of 19 million units in the quarter, taking up 62% of shipments in the region. This is a considerable jump up from the same quarter last year, where the Chinese brands shipped 50% of devices.

“With 75% of shipments consisting of sub-$200 models, the market here is focused on mid-to-low-end smartphones, a segment where brand loyalty is low,” said Canalys analyst Matthew Xie.

The market focus on cheaper devices allowed Samsung to fight back against the Chinese producers, with festive promotions likely to allow Samsung to erode more market share. “Samsung is fighting back in Southeast Asia,” advised Xie. “Samsung chose Thailand to host the global launch event for its latest A series, to show the strategic importance of Southeast Asia.”

The rise of Samsung and Chinese brands is not limited to Southeast Asia, as one report from July claims Apple’s global smartphone market share fell year-on-year in the June quarter from 11.3% to 10.1%. The report also attributed better performance by Chinese vendors and Korea’s Samsung for the fall.

Even so, Apple does not necessarily have to rely on global iPhone shipments in the future, as the manufacturer moves more towards becoming a Services-based company. Meaningful growth in China of 20% year-over-year is believed to have helped increase App Store revenues in the last quarter, in part due to a relaxation of Chinese game license restrictions.

‘iPhone 11,’ ‘iPhone 11 Pro,’ and ‘iPhone 11 Pro Max’ coming in fall, says sketchy report

Data from a budget iPhone enclosure manufacturer reportedly shows both the name and dimensions of the upcoming iPhones, set to release at Apple’s September event.

The spreadsheets show multiple products that are to fit the yet to be released iPhones, which the company is calling the “iPhone 11,” “iPhone 11 Pro,” and “iPhone 11 Pro Max.” Accessories shown include cases, camera lens protectors, and screen protectors.

Other leaks have recently referred to the upcoming iPhone line with similar language.

At the top of one of the spreadsheets, discovered by the French website iPhoneSoft, is a short dimension list, listing the size of each iPhone. The “iPhone 11” is said to be 6.1 inches, the “iPhone 11 Pro” comes in at 5.8 inches, and the “iPhone 11 Pro Max” at 6.5 inches.

The current line of iPhones boast the same dimensions, with the iPhone XR at 6.1 inches, the iPhone XS at 5.8 inches, and the iPhone XS Max at 6.5 inches.

The cases show backs that fall in line with other leaks, specifically the large cutout for the anticipated triple lens camera.

In nearly every similar situation, iPhone accessory manufacturers do not know what Apple is going to call a product prior to launch, nor are they given specifics about product features or dimensions. The document may simply be what ESR has chosen to call the anticipated lineup internally, or they may be using language reflected in recent leaks.
