Sonic Superstars
Image: SEGA

Sonic Superstars will be launching at some point in the near future on the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms. To build hype for this brand-new multiplayer platformer, there will apparently be a “world premiere” for the blue blur’s new game at Opening Night Live next week.

According to the show’s host and hype man Geoff Keighley, Sega will be sharing some “Superstars news” then and there. While the game’s been rated in certain locations around the world, Sega hasn’t actually locked in a release date yet, so we could finally get one.

Sonic will be in good company, with Keighley previously revealing there will also be a Mortal Kombat 1 trailer airing at Opening Night Live. The game’s co-creator Ed Boon will even be there for the reveal. You can catch up on Sonic Superstars and also find out more about Gamescom in our Nintendo Life guide:

Early impressions and even some reviews are now doing the rounds on the internet, and even though this particular version doesn’t include the online multiplayer component and costs a premium price, so far the reception seems to be generally positive.

Apple Card earns J.D. Power’s top spot for co-branded credit card with no annual fee

Apple Card

Apple partnered with Goldman Sachs to launch the Apple Card, and for the third time, the credit card has earned J.D. Power’s number-one ranking in satisfaction.

Apple Card launched in 2019 and quickly became one of the most successful launches for a credit card to date. And since then, it has retained its lofty status among owners, even as Goldman Sachs itself has tried to distance itself from Apple’s co-branded card.

But Apple has more good news, announcing on Thursday that it has once again earned J.D. Power’s number one spot for the “best co-branded credit card for customer satisfaction with no annual fee,” as part of the annual U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study.

“Since the start, we’ve been committed to delivering tools and services that help users live healthier financial lives, and it’s been rewarding to see customers using and finding value in the benefits of Apple Card,” Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, Jennifer Bailey said.

“We are honored that Apple Card has been recognized as a leader in customer satisfaction. In partnership with Goldman Sachs, we are continuously working to expand the value users receive from Apple Card, most recently with the launch of Savings, and we look forward to continuing to develop tools and services that put our users and their financial health first.”

And despite the strained relationship between Apple and Goldman Sachs, Liz Martin, Goldman Sachs’s head of Enterprise Partnerships, said, “With Apple Card, we have had a shared focus on delivering a great experience and providing value to our customers since the beginning.”

The hyper-specific category has some real contenders. J.D. Power notes the Hilton Honors American Express Card ranked second behind Apple/Goldman Sachs, with Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card with Chase and PayPal’s Cashback Mastercard with Synchrony Bank tied for third.

Apple Card customers were gifted another perk in 2023, with Apple and Goldman Sachs launching a dedicated savings account. That appears to be a success as well, with customers depositing upwards of $10 billion in just three months.

Video: Red Dead Redemption Runs Pretty Darn Well On Switch

Red Dead Redemption
Image: Rockstar Games

Red Dead Redemption is out on the Switch eShop today — with a physical release coming later in the year. There’s been controversy around the port’s price point and concerns over the game’s quality (given the state of the GTA Trilogy‘s launch…), so what is this port like?

We’ll have a review of the Switch version of the game out soon here at Nintendo Life, but in the meantime, the venerable Felix over on our YouTube channel pulled a fast draw on the eShop and rode into the Wild West today to check out just how Rockstar’s critically acclaimed Western runs on the console.

And the footage below should speak for itself — it’s looking and running pretty darn smoothly. Rockstar has said that the game should run at a consistent 30fps, and at least from what we’ve played so far, that seems to be the case. Time will tell, of course, but for now, check out eight minutes of our time with Red Dead Redemption on Switch.

Have you grabbed the game on the eShop yet? Are you waiting for the physical version? Let us know in the comments.

Talking Point: Zelda: TOTK Isn’t A Shoo-In For GOTY 2023, And That’s A Good Thing

GOTY?
Image: Nintendo Life

2023, eh? What a year for games.

We’ve still got several months to go before we say hello to 2024 but during internal discussions between the Nintendo Life team, we’ve all acknowledged that 2023 may go down as one of the best years in gaming history, proudly standing alongside the likes of 1998 and 2007.

For Switch owners, the big event of the year was undoubtedly The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which launched — finally — back in May. That’s not all though. We’ve also enjoyed the likes of Metroid Prime Remastered, Pikmin 4, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, Fire Emblem Engage, and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe. And those are just the first-party titles.

Going back to Tears of the Kingdom, the general feeling among the NLife team is that if it had launched back in 2022 as originally intended, it would have been an easy call for Game of the Year, with its only true competitor being FromSoftware’s sublime Elden Ring. Even with that brilliant rival, we feel that Tears of the Kingdom probably would have snatched the crown.

Elden Ring
Bandai Namco is probably thankful TOTK got delayed… — Image: Bandai Namco

Now that we’re approaching the Fall months of 2023, however, Tears of the Kingdom’s chances of being the unanimous Game of the Year amongst critics and fans are frankly looking slightly less certain. Granted, there’s absolutely no denying the game’s exceptional quality, and if you think it will wind up being your personal Game of the Year, then please don’t let us or anyone else stand in the way! It’ll almost certainly be topping the tables around these parts.

However, given the ridiculous cadence of outstanding games launching in 2023, Tears of the Kingdom is facing some tough competition from games on other platforms. And you know what? We think that’s just excellent.

Looking back, particular standouts include Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, Final Fantasy XVI, Diablo IV, Hogwarts Legacy, Street Fighter 6, Baldur’s Gate 3, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Hi-Fi Rush. Then, of course, all of the Switch games we mentioned earlier.

We’re not done yet, though. Looking ahead to the coming months, we’ll be getting Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Starfield, Forza Motorsport, Sea of Stars, Alan Wake II, Mortal Kombat 1, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.

Phew…

Alan Wake II
Alan Wake II is looking absolutely outstanding — Image: Epic Games

The point is, there’s an absurd amount of quality games launching in 2023, and while it would be awfully tempting to hand the Game of the Year crown to Tears of the Kingdom and be done with it, it would be rather premature at this stage. Competition is a great thing for the industry, and if something were to creep out of the shadows and snatch the trophy away from Zelda, then surely this would only spur Nintendo on to make something even greater in the future (if such a thing is even possible).

But out of all of the games listed, which ones currently stand the biggest chance of causing an upset? At the time of writing, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Metroid Prime Remastered currently sit at 96 and 94 on Metacritic respectively. Given that the latter is a remaster of a GameCube title, we feel it can likely be discounted at this point, but Baldur’s Gate 3? Heck, that game’s been getting some wild praise across the board; not just from critics, but all over social media, too. If anything can claim victory over Zelda, it’s probably that.

As we move into September, however, all eyes will be on Betheda’s Starfield. The extensive gameplay presentation back in June promptly required viewers to scoop their jaws up from off the ground, but there’s nevertheless the nagging doubt in fans’ minds as to the technical quality of the release. 30fps? What is it, a Switch game!?!

Bethesda games have always had their fair share of bugs and glitches, and it’s likely that Starfield will have a few of its own. Then again, with the might of Microsoft’s unwavering support, could it buck a long and unfortunate trend? Fingers crossed.

Starfield
Will Starfield launch without those ‘trademark’ Bethesda bugs? — Image: Microsoft

If it were any other year — particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic — then Tears of the Kingdom will likely be the shoo-in for Game of the Year. But now that studios and publishers have adapted to life after such that global event, the floodgates have well and truly opened. If Zelda doesn’t claim victory at the end of the year, we’re not even going to be mad; we’re just ecstatic to see the gaming industry thriving once again.

Fall Guys Goes Totally Tubular With New TMNT Cosmetics

Fall Guys TMNT
Image: Epic Games

We need to accept that at some point in our lives, all of us will be part of a limited-time Epic Games crossover. The latest to join the trend is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which has skated into Fall Guys today.

The TMNT range covers costumes, emotes, unique wearables and more, with Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo taking to the game’s crazy courses. If you are wondering what the Turtles might look like in Fall Guys’ bean form, Nintendo has revealed a trailer showing the heroes in a half shell in action.

These cosmetics will be available in the Fall Guys in-game store until 31st August, so that gives you two weeks to grab as many TMNT goodies as you can.

We have seen the Turtles make a fair few video game appearances as of late, popping up in tie-ins with a whole range of titles from Street Fighter 6 to Session: Skate Sim. This isn’t to mention the upcoming Dimension Shellshock DLC for the brilliant beat ’em up Shredder’s Revenge, which comes our way at the end of this month — it’s a good time to be a Turtles fan.

Will you be picking up any of the TMNT cosmetics in Fall Guys? Let us know in the comments below.

New The Walking Dead Game Will Let You Rewrite Major Events From The Show

Adding to the ever-growing number of tie-in series, games and comics in The Walking Dead universe, GameMill Entertainment and AMC have today announced a brand-new game, The Walking Dead: Destinies, and, yes, it’s coming to Switch (thanks, IGN).

This is a narrative-based action adventure game that looks set to follow the events of the first four seasons of the popular AMC show… until it doesn’t. The unique gimmick here is that the show’s key turning points are in your hands. Didn’t like one character’s death in the early seasons? You can choose to keep them alive in the place of another.

The game will feature over a dozen different characters from the show including Rick, Shane, Glenn, Michonne, Carol, Daryl and more, each of which will bring their own unique skills to the table. Of course, a fair few familiar locations will be making an appearance too, with Greene farm, the prison, Woodbury and others making up the backdrop to your adventure.

We don’t have any idea of a release date for Destinies just yet, though GameMill has stated that it expects the game to retail at $49.99 (or your regional equivalent).

Does this look like it will be up your street? Let us know in the comments below.
