Soapbox: Red Dead Redemption Ignited My Enduring Love Of The Old West

Soapbox features enable our individual writers and contributors to voice their opinions on hot topics and random stuff they’ve been chewing over. Today, Ollie describes how Rockstar Games’ seminal Western influenced his love for the American Frontier…

Growing up, I knew what kind of genres I was interested in when it came to books, movies, and games. I have always gravitated towards horror first and foremost (and I always will, too), but I also had a keen love of sci-fi and fantasy. That didn’t mean I completely avoided anything that didn’t fall into one of those categories; I adored The Godfather trilogy, I read Lord of the Flies more times than I can count, and I’d be damned if I didn’t watch Stand By Me at least once every year. But one genre that always produced tumbleweeds for me was the Western.

For the first two decades of my life, I’d never watched a Western movie, never read a Western novel, and certainly never played a Western game. This wasn’t because I had anything against them — it wasn’t like I could claim to have any kind of authoritative opinion on the genre, after all — but I just never particularly felt like engrossing myself in that kind of world.

That was until Red Dead Redemption came along. Prior to its release in 2010, I’d already become borderline obsessed with Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV on 360. For me, it represented a significant step forward in open-world design, and I was enamoured with the studio’s implementation of Euphoria, an animation tool that could allow for absurdly realistic human physics.

So of course, despite the fact that Red Dead Redemption took place in the Old West, I knew I had to play it. So I did. And it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life.

The opening of Red Dead Redemption is uniquely calm and quiet, all things considered. It starts off with the protagonist, John Marston, arriving via train to the quaint town of Armadillo. There, he meets a bearded old-timer called Jake, who rides with John to the fortified stronghold of Fort Mercer, where John will confront an old gang ally called Bill Williamson.

The encounter winds up with John being shot, left for dead, and carted off to the nearby settlement of MacFarlane Ranch. Up until that point, however, Red Dead Redemption takes its sweet time, with the only actual gameplay being the relatively uneventful journey that takes you from Armadillo to Fort Mercer. It not only serves as an introduction to some of the core gameplay mechanics, but to the world itself. Leaving behind the sliver of civilisation found in Armadillo only to find yourself knee-deep in what can only be described as the middle of nowhere, Red Dead Redemption manages to make even the most desolate of environments feel real and lived-in.

It was this first horse ride that ignited a faint spark of passion in my heart. Watching the dust kick up from the horses’ hooves, the distant horizon shimmer in the heat, and a bunch of cackling coyotes munch on the half-eaten carcass of a dead deer, I instantly fell in love with the setting. It felt daunting and intimidating in the same way that stepping into the overwhelmingly expansive land of Hyrule felt in Breath of the Wild, but somehow, the harsh reality of the Old West appealed to me even more.

So I played through Red Dead Redemption from start to finish in just a few lengthy sessions. I was infatuated with it: the characters, the landscape, the wildlife, the music… all of it. And so, having watched the credits roll, I knew instantly that I wasn’t done with the genre. Admittedly, going back to Red Dead Revolver didn’t feel like an option for me, because I already knew through friends that it probably wouldn’t stack up next to its younger sibling, so I ventured out into other mediums.

I started with a trilogy of films that I suspect many fans of the Old West have cut their teeth on: Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy, comprised of A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and of course, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I loved each more than the last, with the finale proving to be one of the finest films of all time, propped up by killer performances from Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach, and Clint Eastwood.

From there, I stuck with Leone and watched Once Upon a Time in the West, and while it certainly lacked the familiar faces of the Dollars Trilogy, folks weren’t kidding when they said that it was Leone’s magnum opus. Impossibly sweeping in scope, countless shots are forever burned into my mind’s eye.

With those genre tentpoles out of the way, I was well and truly addicted. I moved on to some more of Clint Eastwood’s classics — Unforgiven, Hang ‘Em High, Joe Kidd — before venturing elsewhere with the likes of Stagecoach, The Searchers, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and The Wild Bunch. Even Westerns set in the modern age sunk their hooks into me; I adore No Country for Old Men and Clint Eastwood’s own Cry Macho has its charm.

When I’d gotten through a couple of dozen movies, however, I still needed more. So, naturally, I put aside the likes of Stephen King and Shirley Jackson and picked up a few Western novels. I started with Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove, an epic story that, in hindsight, might have been a touch too ambitious for my first journey into the world of (Old) Western literature. Having said that, I still loved it, even if it did take me a little while to finish. I then learned that Lonesome Dove was just one of several novels set in the same world, so I read those and then moved swiftly on to Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy.

Goodness me. If there’s one novel that I would implore everybody to read at some point, it’s Blood Meridian. It’s not only one of the finest Western novels of all time, it’s frankly one of the best works of literature full stop. It’s not an easy read, admittedly, both in terms of its prose and excessively violent content, but there are passages in this book that read like they’ve been written by some higher power. It’s simply that good.

Eventually, I went back to Stephen King with his epic fantasy series The Dark Tower. While it’s a story that comfortably contains tropes from pretty much every literary genre under the sun, it consistently felt like a Western to me, with its gun-toting protagonist Roland Deschain and the harsh, desolate wasteland of Mid-World. What a ride.

The point is, I’ve watched and read pieces of work that I would consider to be genuine masterpieces at this point, and I simply wouldn’t have come across them if it wasn’t for Red Dead Redemption. It proved to be a perfect entry point into the world of the American Frontier; an accessible jaunt that, while certainly depicting a more romanticised vision of the Old West, felt otherwise remarkably authentic. I can’t thank Rockstar enough for creating such an exceptional game, and if you’re tempted to purchase it on the Switch, high price point be damned, just go for it. You won’t be disappointed.

Random: Pikmin 4 Fan On A Mission To Collect All In-Game Treasure In Real Life

Pikmin 4 GBA SP
Image: Nintendo

If collecting all of the treasures in Pikmin 4 hasn’t scratched your collecting itch, then you should take a leaf out of clay artist and Pikmin fan Zatch Mehr’s book.

Mehr has given himself the task of collecting every treasure you can find in Pikmin 4 — but in real life. Sharing his progress on Twitter so far, Mehr has already gathered together a huge amount of treasures. Simple, everyday items like candles, a water bowl, and golf balls are fairly easy to come by, but we can’t imagine that specific octopus toy was easy to come across.

Eagle-eyed Pikmin fans will probably notice that some items are missing — the Joy-Con, watermelon, and the extremely heavy gold bar aren’t among Mehr’s collection, but he’s still working on building up his findings and gathering enough sparklium.

Gathering the items in-game is fun enough, given the delightfully weird names the game gives to each item — Olfactory Sculpture for a scented candle is inspired — but seeing them all laid out on a table in real life really hammers home the care and attention to detail that’s gone into the latest Pikmin game.

With 239 unique treasures in Pikmin 4, we’re excited to come back and look at Mehr’s collection once it’s finished. Perhaps he just needs an Oatchi or Moss (or a real dog) to perfect the collection.

Mehr also has his own Etsy store where he creates clay models of various Pikmin objects, enemies, and the little plant critters themselves — he’s got the very octopus toy on sale there right now along with other creatures, so go check out Zatch’s Clay Creations on Etsy right now.

Have you collected every single treasure in Pikmin 4 yet? Carry your thoughts down to the comments.

Linux for Apple Silicon adds first conformant M1 GPU driver

Linux logo on a MacBook Pro

The ongoing Asahi project to bring Linux to Apple Silicon has reached a milestone, adding the first conformant GPU driver for the family of chips.

The Asahi Linux project for Mac first teased plans to launch a dedicated GPU driver for Apple Silicon running Linux back in 2022. At the time, they had already reverse-engineered a prototype that was “good enough to run real graphics applications and benchmarks.”

Now, in 2023, the first and only conformant OpenGL ES 3.1 GPU driver is available for Apple Silicon-based Macs.

To reach this goal, it took thousands of tests to make sure that the driver is stable and won’t produce issues. There is a test suite that is tasked with testing every feature within the implementation.

Once that test period is over, there is a 30-day review period overseen by the standards body, Khronos. In the case for the first conformant OpenGL ES 3.1 GPU for Apple Silicon, there were no issues found.

OpenGL ES 3.1 makes it possible for applications to write to a specific image displayed on the screen, which enables algorithms to run flexible image processing. The Asahi Project offers a detailed rundown of how the new feature works.

Interestingly, the project points out that Apple’s own drivers for Apple Silicon are not conformant for any standard graphics API. This being the case, it means there is no guarantee that any application using the available standards like OpenGL ES, OpenGL, or Vulkan, will work on a computer with an M1 or M2 processor.

There’s a real-world scenario for this, too, according to the report:

“The third-party MoltenVK layers a subset of Vulkan on top of the proprietary drivers. However, those drivers lack key functionality, breaking valid Vulkan applications,” the post adds. “That hinders developers and users alike, if they haven’t yet switched their M1/M2 computers to Linux.”

Linux 5.19 was released in August 2022, notable for the fact it was done on an M2-equipped MacBook Air.

Thank Goodness You’re Here! Delights With British Humour And Surrealist Cartoon Vibes

Perhaps the best surprise of Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 was Thank Goodness You’re Here!, one of the very last trailers dropped at the very end of the showcase.

This delightful-looking “slapformer” comes from the team at Coal Supper, Will Todd and James Carbutt. Thank Goodness You’re Here is a surreal tribute to their home in northern England: Barnsworth. This is the developer’s first full-scale console game following the Steam hit The Good Time Garden.

It looks like a live Beano comic, but is full of adult humour and grotesque visuals throughout. Suitably British, then, innit? Let’s see what publisher Panic has to say about the game:

After arriving early for a big meeting with the mayor of a bizarre Northern English town, a traveling salesman takes the time to explore and meet the locals, who are all very eager to give him a series of increasingly odd jobs… Thank Goodness You’re Here! is a comedy slapformer, which unfolds over time as the players’ exploration and antics leave their mark on the strange town of Barnsworth. With each completed odd job, new areas of the town open up, stranger and stranger tasks become available, and the clock ticks towards our salesman’s big meeting. The town’s colorful inhabitants are brought to life with vibrant hand-drawn animation, fully voiced dialogue, and wall-to-wall double entendres.

Features:
Bold, beautiful visual design that seamlessly blends side-scrolling action vignettes with top-down exploration in a chock-a-block open world
Progressively more involved and puzzling odd-jobs to complete: cut the grass, bake a pie, traverse the astral plane!
Hand-crafted animation and original story based on traditional Yorkshire folklore
Authentic regional dialects guaranteed to mek thi spit art thi tea laughin’
Oddly moving original soundtrack

Thank Goodness You’re Here! will be at Gamescom over the next couple of days, but you’ll also be able to try the game out at PAX West from 1st to 4th September.

We’re excited to dunk our biscuits into our tea when Thank Goodness You’re Here! launches on Switch sometime in 2024. Will you be putting the kettle on for a slapformer? Let us know down below.

Shao Kahn And Sindel Star In Gloriously Gory Mortal Kombat 1 Trailer

Mortal Kombat 1 Sindel
Image: NetherRealm

Mortal Kombat 1 continues to look absolutely brutal — and incredible. And two fan-favourite characters have been confirmed to be returning in a new trailer, which debuted during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023.

Shao Kahn and Sindel — who made their debuts in Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat III respectively — will be ruling the Outworld in the upcoming bloody beat ’em up.

Shao Kahn has been reimagined as General Shao, while Sindel resides as the Empress of the Outworld. Joining these two new kombatants are two Kameo fighters, Motaro and Shujinko.

Fatalities are abound in this trailer, with Sindel showcasing her impressive power with her hair. Also, there’s lots of crunchy, gory action — because of course there is. Of course, the gameplay doesn’t look like it’s running on Switch — we’ll have to wait and see on 19th September how it plays.

Check out the trailer by hopping over to YouTube. It should go without saying — make sure you’re not at work or around the kids when you check this out.

Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon Free Story DLC Lands In September

@WaffleBoat I think it’s one of the best sonic games we have gotten since generations (which isn’t hard to do to be fair) the sound track goes hard and while it has issues, it’s a vary solid game! And if you don’t enjoy the controls there are lots of way to adjust his speed, and control. Story wise this is one of sonics best, it’s not some masterpiece or anything but it’s a good story with good writing!

Now this game isn’t without its issues, the biggest one is the pop in because of how quickly sonic moves, and a lot of rails are just awkwardly placed in the air, glitch wise I don’t remember running into any.

But, the game is getting this free dlc so I would say it’s more than worth it.
If your not a fan of sonic games, then this game probably won’t change your mind on him, if you have never played one before, then this is a good first jump into the world of sonic. And like others have said it’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a good game. saying this just in case I made it sound this way, I just really enjoy the game.

I hope this helps.

Little Nightmares III Announced For Switch, Out 2024

So… I really enjoyed the first Little Nightmares game but was honestly very let down with the second one. A lot of the room layouts felt like they were copied-and-pasted from the first game. Other than the teacher lady who could stretch her neck, none of the monsters were particularly scary. You had a knockoff Slenderman, and then there was like a huntsman with a Looney Tunes looking rifle–the ones with the funnel on the end.

I also hated the fact they added combat. Picking up and swinging an axe that’s as large as your body and trying to swing that heavy piece of equipment at disembodied hands leaping toward you incredibly fast speeds is… not fun. You have to have perfect timing, but there’s such a long delay between pressing the attack button and the time it takes for your character’s tiny little body to swing the dang thing. That handicap didn’t add to the suspense, it just made me angry.

Hoping this game will be better, although it feels too soon. Hard to believe the second game came out over 2 years ago now. Time moves so strangely in a post-COVID world; I feel like the pandemic just started last year. I’m happy about the addition of co-op, as my dad enjoyed watching me play the others. He would actually come up with solutions to a lot of the puzzles before I could. This will give us something to do together.
