RedDeerGames has revealed Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron for the Nintendo Switch, developed by Phosphor Studios and launching “soon”, whenever that means.
There’s not a great deal to go on at the moment other than it’s an aerial combat game and your mission is, as RedDeerGames puts it, to fight.
The debut trailer is short and sweet, but it’s a bit of an assault on the senses, with a thumping metal backing track to accompany the myriad of explosions on display. It looks like a decent visual feast for the Switch, so we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one.
As for Warhammer, the Switch has received multiple games from the franchise during its lifetime, most recently with Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, which we gave a score of 7/10 in our review, stating that the “comically violent combat sequences offer up consistently thrilling engagements with just the right amount of difficulty”.
Time will tell if Dakka Squadron can earn similar accolades.

Hello Games has detailed its latest major update for No Man’s Sky, dubbed ‘Echoes’, and it sounds like a big one, folks.
Launching today (yes, today), the main draw for the new update will be a brand-new robotic race, which Hello Games states is the first entirely new race introduced to the game since its initial launch in 2016. Along with this, you can expect new story content, assignments, and equipment to become available so you can work towards building your very own robotic avatar. Neat!
Space battles have also been overhauled for Echoes, with Hello Games introducing actual freighter-to-freighter combat. You’ll need to protect your own freighter from pirates, fly into the enemy freighter’s trenches, destroy its shields, and emerge victorious.
When you want to wind down, a new holographic museum feature has been added, so you can physically display all the nifty bits and bobs discovered on your journey.
Finally, for Switch players specifically, a new anti-aliasing option will be added to make visuals appear even crisper whether you’re playing in docked or handheld mode. The game already looks pretty impressive as it is, so this is very welcome, indeed.

Chess is one of the most ancient games in existence, and while we continue to eagerly await the fabled release of the completely real Chess 2, it can be fun to see how modern game makers choose to iterate on the classic design. In Shotgun King, the latest release from Headbang Club and developer Punkcake Délicieux, we get a chance to see what a game of chess would be like if it had roguelike elements and you could shoot pieces with a shotgun. It’s ridiculous, shockingly difficult, and incredibly addictive once you understand it, making for a great experience all around.
The narrative in Shotgun King is kept pretty simple; you play as the evil Black King whose wicked and tyrannical ways have driven all of his once-loyal followers to desert him and join the White King’s army. Wounded by their betrayal and unwilling to own up to his mistakes, the king chooses to retrieve his trusty old shotgun for some good old-fashioned revenge, blowing away any pieces that stand in his way as he makes his last play for the White King’s head. It’s silly and the story hardly features beyond this basic premise, but we nonetheless appreciated the little cutscenes included to build up this little lore.
Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)
Shotgun King could be best described as a roguelike take on chess, with guns. The only piece you have on your side is your king, while the white team can have any number and combination of pieces. But while they can only move and attack you using standard chess rules (usually), you have a shotgun that has plenty of reach and enough power to turn them to rubble. As in a typical game of chess, the goal of each level is to simply defeat the enemy’s king, but that becomes an increasingly weird and difficult task the further in that you get.
Your shotgun initially only has a couple of shots in the chamber with a handful of slugs in reserve, and a big part of the strategic gameplay of each level is figuring out when to move and when to act. You can either move or shoot, but you can’t do both in one turn, and reloading either costs you a turn or takes place automatically when you move. Meanwhile, the enemy team will waste no time in trying to box you in, and if you find yourself in check, there’s usually not many options to get out of it. On some level, then, you still need to approach each level as you would a normal game of chess, planning out your moves and adapting quickly to enemy movements.
Notably, you’re forced to choose between three randomly generated pairs of upgrade cards after winning each level—one of the cards will buff your king, while the other one will buff the enemy team. This can lead to some nicely nail-biting choices, as you often have to weigh choosing between the best upgrade for you and the worst upgrade for your foes. That enhanced range upgrade for your shotgun may be just what you need for your build, but is it worth grabbing if it means that the enemy will begin each round with an extra queen on their side? On the other hand, if you don’t go somewhat aggressive and ensure that your king is properly kitted out, you’re going to get spanked in the later levels when going up against an increasingly overpowered enemy team.
Captured on Nintendo Switch (Docked)
What’s most welcome about this system is how it allows you to create builds for both your king and your enemies, which lends itself to quite a bit of diversity between runs due to the creative modifiers that can be introduced. For example, one upgrade for the enemy team will randomly choose a pawn on the other team as the ‘heir’, and killing the king will cause the heir to be promoted to another king you have to destroy. In another example, you can pull a card for your king that creates a randomized ‘sidequest’ on each level where getting your king to a specific tile will let you activate a powerful, one-time use effect from a short menu. This kind of gameplay diversity makes Shotgun King an impressively addictive ‘one more run’ sort of game, as the relatively fast pace and variety keep you coming back for more.
Once you finally beat a run—which only takes about 20 minutes or so and culminates in an amusingly over-the-top boss fight—you can then continue to climb the ranks by upping the difficulty level. Every new difficulty level will add more permanent modifiers, such as the enemy team starting with an extra rook, and you have to complete a run under these new conditions before you can unlock the next difficulty level. Completing these and achieving certain objectives within them unlocks new guns to start a run with, altering your approach even further. We appreciated how this difficulty system adds a sense of forward progression to the experience, giving you something more to achieve than simply running everything again with a different build.
Captured on Nintendo Switch (Docked)
There’s also an endless mode you can attempt that tasks you with getting as far as you can before you inevitably slip up, and a horde mode where chess pieces will spawn every few turns from the borders. While neither of these substantially change the gameplay loop, they nonetheless add more fun challenges for you to overcome. Plus, there are achievements to hunt down across all three modes, which gives completionists plenty to chase.
Visually, Shotgun King sticks with a retro pixel art style—there’s even a filter for a CRT effect for the screen. Graphics are kept relatively simple, however, with only about three colors being represented on screen at once. Though we would’ve appreciated a little more visual flair in this regard, the old-school aesthetic works well here and feels like a good fit overall for this kind of game. This is matched by an equally retro chiptune soundtrack—nothing too catchy here, but it helps set the somewhat serious tone.
Conclusion
Shotgun King does a wonderful job of setting itself apart from the veritable deluge of roguelikes available today. Its blending of classic chess principles with shooting elements and randomized gameplay makes for a fun and highly replayable experience that we’d suggest you give a shot. If you’re looking for a relatively short, addictive game that requires a bit of thinking to get the most out of, Shotgun King is undoubtedly something you should look into.
Sega’s presence at Gamescom has been keeping Sonic the Hedgehog fans very happy. And as expected, the booth for Sonic Superstars is appropriately decked out with the blue blur’s newest adventure. However, there are a couple of other attractions that have been catching fans’ attention — a rather gigantic LEGO display.
We already know about the iconic London Sonic statue, which our sister site Time Extension reported on, but LEGO has given Sega a helping hand by sizing the adorable Sonic LEGO Minifigure alongside Robotnik’s iconic Death Egg Robot.
In fact, Sonic’s designer and Sonic Superstars producer Naoto Oshima has been taking snaps of the awesome-looking statue while attending the show himself. He shared the snaps on Twitter earlier today:
The display was created with 383,217 elements of LEGO and it weighs over an incredible 844 kg. So no one is going to be trying to steal this anytime soon.
The impressive statue is on display at Gamescom at the Sonic Superstars booth until the end of the show, and you can see how LEGO put it all together in the clip below.
Sonic Superstars launches on Nintendo Switch on 17th October. Have you seen the giant Death Egg Robot at Gamescom? Do you want your own one? Let us know in the comments.

Red Art Games has unveiled pre-orders for an upcoming physical Switch release for the chess-strategy roguelike game Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate.
Launching in Q1 2024, the release will come in two flavours: a standard edition and a deluxe edition. While both come in at the same price of €34.99, the latter is exclusive to the Red Art Games website and is limited to 300 copies.
What’s more, the deluxe edition will come with a wraparound cover sleeve featuring alternative art as well as a keychain. Not bad for the same price, if you ask us.

After a number of successful crowdfunding campaigns, publisher Edia has now announced a new one – Cosmic Fantasy Collection 2.
This latest crowdfunded effort for Switch will be handled via another Makuake campaign. This latest one is seeking three million Yen (about $20k USD). At the time of writing, it’s almost reached the one million mark.
Here are the three role-playing games that will be offered in this collection (via Gematsu):
– Cosmic Fantasy 3: Bouken Shounen Rei (September 1992, PC Engine Super CD-ROM²) – Cosmic Fantasy 4: Ginga Shounen Densetsu – Totsunyuu-hen Densetsu no Prelude (June 1994, PC Engine Super CD-ROM²) – Cosmic Fantasy 4: Ginga Shounen Densetsu – Gekitou-hen Hikari no Uchuu no Naka de… (November 1994, PC Engine Super CD-ROM²)

In order to match the changing needs, it will shift towards a “more agile and more focused studio” – allowing developers to iterate quickly, unlock more creativity and form a clear vision of the games being built before development is ramped up. This “extremely difficult” decision will also apparently “preserve the health of the studio” and allow it to focus more on what it does best: “create exceptional story-driven single-player experiences filled with vast worlds and rich characters.”
Impacted colleagues will be given “internal opportunities” throughout EA, but not everyone will necessarily be guaranteed a new role. As for current projects in development such as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, BioWare insists its commitment remains steadfast. Pre-production on the new Mass Effect game also continues.
As cliche as this sounds, there truly is never a good time to enact changes like this, but we trust that we have the right leaders and team in place with vision, passion, and proven track records to deliver world-class Dragon Age and Mass Effect experiences that our fans will love. – BioWare general manager, Gary McKay
Although there haven’t been any new BioWare projects released on the Nintendo Switch, a lot of the company’s older titles have made their way across to the hybrid system thanks to other developers and publishers. Some of these titles include Never Winter Nights and the original Knights of the Old Republic Star Wars game.
If we hear any other developments, we’ll let you know.
As California’s SB 244 right-to-repair bill is routed through the capitol, Apple has voiced its support in a surprise move from the company.
Right to repair has become an increasing issue in Silicon Valley as lobbyists fight to keep repair control under mega-corps like Apple and Google. Bills like SB 244 have been openly opposed by Apple in the past, but this one has gotten the official stamp of approval per a letter sent by Apple’s legal team.
According toTechCrunch, a letter was sent by Apple to California state senator Susan Talamantes Eggman voicing support for the impending bill. The endorsement comes as a slight surprise, though it’s clear why Apple supports this bill versus previous iterations.
SB 244 expands on this by setting strict terms, requiring parts, tools, and documentation for purchased products for up to seven years. This goes well beyond existing warranty requirements and is a boon to users and third-party repair shops seeking such materials.
“Apple’s support for California’s Right to Repair Act demonstrates the power of the movement that has been building for years and the ability for industries to partner with us to make good policy to benefit the people of California,” Sen. Eggman said in a statement. “I’m grateful for their engagement on this issue and for leading among their peers when it comes to supporting access to repair.”
The letter sent by Apple details why the company supports the bill in no uncertain terms. It mentions that the bill maintains user privacy and security, ensures official part use and requires disclosure when non-genuine parts are used, and doesn’t compromise consumer safety or repair reliability.
