Pokémon X Van Gogh Museum Merch Is Already Seeing Expensive Online Resales

Pokémon X Van Gogh
Image: The Pokémon Company

Update #2: The Pokémon Company has issued a formal apology as just a day after the Van Gogh collaboration kicked off, all of the merchandise has already sold out.

We’ve been reporting on the ludicrous resales and queues as fans line up to get these limited products, but TPC has confirmed it has sold out both at the museum and on the Pokémon Center websites.

It has confirmed, however, that it will be working out other ways to give out the exclusive promo card. Here’s the statement below:

“We apologize to all the fans eagerly awaiting our Pokémon Center x Van Gogh Museum release today.
Due to overwhelming demand, all our products from this collection have sold out. We understand this is disappointing to many who were looking to our official email and social media channels for guidance on how and when to purchase. We are actively working on ways to provide more “Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat” promo cards for fans shopping at Pokémon Center in the future. Details will be released at a later date.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”

Update [Fri 29th Sep, 2023 11:30 BST]: You might have seen yesterday’s videos of crowds descending on the Van Gogh Museum store in an attempt to grab up some of its exclusive Pokémon merchandise. Well, as expected, it seems that more than a few members of this opening-day crowd were out to make a quick buck, as many of the limited-time items can now be found on eBay with a huge price markup.

It’s the exclusive Pikachu X Van Gogh Museum card that appears to be the most popular item out there at the moment. The card could be obtained by taking part in the museum’s ‘Pokémon Adventure’ activity (specifically listed as “For ages 6 and up”, we might add), which, when completed, could be handed in at the venue reception for one of the limited-availability cards.

Despite the fact that these were free prizes for taking part in a children’s activity, they can now be found online with an average asking price of £300-£400. Check out the following tweet from @shikaskye to get an idea of just how many of them are being listed.

Even some of the collaboration’s Pokémon prints are being listed for resale, which, we hasten to add, can still be purchased online from the Van Gogh Museum shop.

Today’s online resales are disappointing to see, though hardly unsurprising after yesterday’s scenes. We like to think that things will quieten down over the next few days, but we fear that as long as stocks last, the scalping will continue.

Original article [Thu 28th Sep, 2023 16:10 BST]: Today marks the opening day of the Pokémon X Van Gogh Museum collaboration in Amsterdam. The event brings Pokémon-inspired interpretations of some of Van Gogh’s most famous works to the museum floor and there is some exclusive merchandise to pick up too — the latter of which has apparently brought out droves of scalpers to the venue’s gift shop, keen to grab as much of the exclusive collaboration as possible while stocks last.

Videos shared to Twitter by @monkeloidtv and pokeboy26 (via @Jorden1506) appear to show the shop’s interior flooded by crowds of people after the collaboration prints, plushies, and cards. It is worth pointing out that while the video caption explicitly refers to those being filmed as “scalpers”, we can’t say for certain that all those in attendance were after a profitable resale. Either way, the crowded scene is really rather shocking. Note. The second video features an f-bomb at the very end — skip that one if you’d prefer not to hear it.

Of course, this is not the first time that we have seen crowds of people attempting to snap up some exclusive Pokémon merchandise. We previously saw McDonald’s UK limiting the purchase of Happy Meals in an attempt to get ahead of scalpers after the limited edition cards back in 2021, and scenes like those above might imply that such restrictions will start to become commonplace in the future.

Serebii‘s Joe Merrick took to Twitter to comment on the reports from the opening day of the Van Gogh collaboration, stating that buying merchandise solely for the resale potential is “not an acceptable practice”:

This makes me so sad and is why we can’t have nice things
I saw so many wanting to go over in the first few days just to get any card and merch to resell. This is not an acceptable practice. If you do that, shame on you.

The collaboration runs until 7th January 2024, and we would imagine that the crowds will quieten down over the coming months. That being said, if you are not able to make it to Amsterdam but still want to get involved with the exclusive merchandise, then many of the items can be found on the Pokémon Centre online store including the Pikachu plush, figurines, tote bags and more — though who knows how much will be left after today.

Contribute to Fedora 39 Upgrade, Virtualization, and Cloud Test Day

Fedora test days are events where anyone can help make certain that changes in Fedora work well in an upcoming release. Fedora community members often participate, and the public is welcome at these events. If you’ve never contributed to Fedora before, this is a perfect way to get started.

There are three test days occurring in the next two weeks covering three topics:

  • Tuesday October 03, is to test the Fedora Cloud
  • Thursday October 05 , is to test the Fedora Upgrade
  • Monday October 09 , is to test Virtualization

Come and test with us to make Fedora 39 even better. Read more below on how to do it.

Fedora Cloud test day

Fedora Linux 39 is coming close to the release date and the Fedora Cloud SIG would like to get the community together to find and squash some bugs.

The test day will occur on Tuesday October 03. This event will test Fedora Cloud Base content. See the wiki page for links to the Beta Cloud Base Images. We have qcow, AMI, and ISO images ready for testing.

Upgrade test day

As we come closer to Fedora Linux 39 release dates, it’s time to test upgrades. This release has a lot of changes and it becomes essential that we test the graphical upgrade methods as well as the command line methods.

This test day will happen on Thursday, October 05. It will test upgrading from a full updated F37 and F38 to F39 for all architectures (x86_64, ARM, aarch64) and variants (WS, cloud, server, silverblue, IoT). See this wiki page for information and details.

Virtualization test day

This test day will happen on Monday, October 09 and will test all forms of virtualization possible in Fedora. The test day will focus on testing Fedora or your favorite distro inside a bare metal implementation of Fedora running Boxes, KVM, VirtualBox and whatever you have. The general features of installing the OS and working with it are outlined in the test cases which you will find on the results page.

How do test days work?

A test day is an event where anyone can help make certain that changes in Fedora work well in an upcoming release. Fedora community members often participate, and the public is welcome at these events. Test days are the perfect way to start contributing if you not in the past.

The only requirement to get started is the ability to download test materials (which include some large files) and then read and follow directions step by step.

Detailed information about all the test days are on the wiki page links provided above. If you are available on or around the days of the events, please do some testing and report your results.

Ed Boon Might Already Be Teasing Another Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Character

Mortal Kombat 1 DLC
Image: NetherRealm Studios, WB Games

Following a recent Mortal Kombat 1 datamine suggesting the possibility of Ghostface from the Scream series being added to the game in the future, the game’s director and co-creator Ed Boon has now posted a rather interesting image on his social media.

It shows an image of horror characters added to past Mortal Kombat games along with a number of others that are yet to cameo in the brutal and bloody fighting series. As you can see below, one of these happens to be Ghostface. This character is featured alongside Chucky and Jigsaw.

It’s hard to say what exactly this post might mean. Boon loves teasing fans, so there may or may not be a possibility of some of the characters with question marks above their heads coming to the game in the future as part of an additional Kombat pack.

Some fans are already convinced this is enough to confirm Ghostface is on the way to Mortal Kombat 1, but keep in mind nothing has been officially confirmed at this stage, so there are no guarantees. The characters that are currently confirmed as DLC for the first Kombat Pack include Peacemaker, Omni-Man, Homelander, Quan Chi, Ermac and Takashi Takeda. This pack will also include five more Kameo Fighters when it drops in Spring 2024.

Would you be interested in some horror characters joining the Mortal Kombat 1 roster? Who would you pick based on the screenshot above? Leave a comment below.

Python BS4 – How to Scrape Absolute URL Instead of Relative Path

5/5 – (1 vote)

Summary: Use urllib.parse.urljoin() to scrape the base URL and the relative path and join them to extract the complete/absolute URL. You can also concatenate the base URL and the absolute path to derive the absolute path; but make sure to take care of erroneous situations like extra forward-slash in this case.

Quick Answer

When web scraping with BeautifulSoup in Python, you may encounter relative URLs (e.g., /page2.html) instead of absolute URLs (e.g., http://example.com/page2.html). To convert relative URLs to absolute URLs, you can use the urljoin() function from the urllib.parse module.

Below is an example of how to extract absolute URLs from the a tags on a webpage using BeautifulSoup and urljoin:

from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
import requests
from urllib.parse import urljoin # URL of the webpage you want to scrape
url = 'http://example.com' # Send an HTTP request to the URL
response = requests.get(url)
response.raise_for_status() # Raise an error for bad responses # Parse the webpage content
soup = BeautifulSoup(response.text, 'html.parser') # Find all the 'a' tags on the webpage
for a_tag in soup.find_all('a'): # Get the href attribute from the 'a' tag href = a_tag.get('href') # Use urljoin to convert the relative URL to an absolute URL absolute_url = urljoin(url, href) # Print the absolute URL print(absolute_url)

In this example:

  • url is the URL of the webpage you want to scrape.
  • response is the HTTP response obtained by sending an HTTP GET request to the URL.
  • soup is a BeautifulSoup object that contains the parsed HTML content of the webpage.
  • soup.find_all('a') finds all the a tags on the webpage.
  • a_tag.get('href') gets the href attribute from an a tag, which is the relative URL.
  • urljoin(url, href) converts the relative URL to an absolute URL by joining it with the base URL.
  • absolute_url is the absolute URL, which is printed to the console.

Now that you have a quick overview let’s dive into the specific problem more deeply and discuss various methods to solve this easily and effectively. 👇

Problem Formulation

Problem: How do you extract all the absolute URLs from an HTML page?

Example: Consider the following webpage which has numerous links:

Now, when you try to scrape the links as highlighted above, you find that only the relative links/paths are extracted instead of the entire absolute path. Let us have a look at the code given below, which demonstrates what happens when you try to extract the 'href' elements normally.

from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
import urllib.request
from urllib.parse import urljoin
import requests web_url = 'https://sayonshubham.github.io/'
headers = {"User-Agent": "Mozilla/5.0 (CrKey armv7l 1.5.16041) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) " "Chrome/31.0.1650.0 Safari/537.36"}
# get() Request
response = requests.get(web_url, headers=headers)
# Store the webpage contents
webpage = response.content
# Check Status Code (Optional)
# print(response.status_code)
# Create a BeautifulSoup object out of the webpage content
soup = BeautifulSoup(webpage, "html.parser")
for i in soup.find_all('nav'): for url in i.find_all('a'): print(url['href'])

Output:

/
/about
/blog
/finxter
/

The above output is not what you desired. You wanted to extract the absolute paths as shown below:

https://sayonshubham.github.io/
https://sayonshubham.github.io/about
https://sayonshubham.github.io/blog
https://sayonshubham.github.io/finxter
https://sayonshubham.github.io/

Without further delay, let us go ahead and try to extract the absolute paths instead of the relative paths.

Method 1: Using urllib.parse.urljoin()

The easiest solution to our problem is to use the urllib.parse.urljoin() method.

According to the Python documentation: urllib.parse.urljoin() is used to construct a full/absolute URL by combining the “base URL” with another URL. The advantage of using the urljoin() is that it properly resolves the relative path, whether BASE_URL is the domain of the URL, or the absolute URL of the webpage.

from urllib.parse import urljoin URL_1 = 'http://www.example.com'
URL_2 = 'http://www.example.com/something/index.html' print(urljoin(URL_1, '/demo'))
print(urljoin(URL_2, '/demo'))

Output:

http://www.example.com/demo
http://www.example.com/demo

Now that we have an idea about urljoin, let us have a look at the following code which successfully resolves our problem and helps us to extract the complete/absolute paths from the HTML page.

Solution:

from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
import urllib.request
from urllib.parse import urljoin
import requests web_url = 'https://sayonshubham.github.io/'
headers = {"User-Agent": "Mozilla/5.0 (CrKey armv7l 1.5.16041) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) " "Chrome/31.0.1650.0 Safari/537.36"}
# get() Request
response = requests.get(web_url, headers=headers)
# Store the webpage contents
webpage = response.content
# Check Status Code (Optional)
# print(response.status_code)
# Create a BeautifulSoup object out of the webpage content
soup = BeautifulSoup(webpage, "html.parser")
for i in soup.find_all('nav'): for url in i.find_all('a'): print(urljoin(web_url, url.get('href')))

Output:

https://sayonshubham.github.io/
https://sayonshubham.github.io/about
https://sayonshubham.github.io/blog
https://sayonshubham.github.io/finxter
https://sayonshubham.github.io/

Method 2: Concatenate The Base URL And Relative URL Manually

Another workaround to our problem is to concatenate the base part of the URL and the relative URLs manually, just like two ordinary strings. The problem, in this case, is that manually adding the strings might lead to “one-off” errors — try to spot the extra front slash characters / below:

URL_1 = 'http://www.example.com/'
print(URL_1+'/demo') # Output --> http://www.example.com//demo

Therefore to ensure proper concatenation, you have to modify your code accordingly such that any extra character that might lead to errors is removed. Let us have a look at the following code that helps us to concatenate the base and the relative paths without the presence of any extra forward slash.

Solution:

from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
import urllib.request
from urllib.parse import urljoin
import requests web_url = 'https://sayonshubham.github.io/'
headers = {"User-Agent": "Mozilla/5.0 (CrKey armv7l 1.5.16041) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) " "Chrome/31.0.1650.0 Safari/537.36"}
# get() Request
response = requests.get(web_url, headers=headers)
# Store the webpage contents
webpage = response.content
# Check Status Code (Optional)
# print(response.status_code)
# Create a BeautifulSoup object out of the webpage content
soup = BeautifulSoup(webpage, "html.parser")
for i in soup.find_all('nav'): for url in i.find_all('a'): # extract the href string x = url['href'] # remove the extra forward-slash if present if x[0] == '/': print(web_url + x[1:]) else: print(web_url+x)

Output:

https://sayonshubham.github.io/
https://sayonshubham.github.io/about
https://sayonshubham.github.io/blog
https://sayonshubham.github.io/finxter
https://sayonshubham.github.io/

⚠ Caution: This is not the recommended way of extracting the absolute path from a given HTML page. In situations when you have an automated script that needs to resolve a URL but at the time of writing the script you don’t know what website your script is visiting, in that case, this method won’t serve your purpose, and your go-to method would be to use urlljoin. Nevertheless, this method deserves to be mentioned because, in our case, it successfully serves the purpose and helps us to extract the absolute URLs.

Conclusion

Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon DLC Launch Trailer Highlights Tails, Knuckles & Amy

Sonic Frontiers‘ final free update, The Final Horizon, launches later today, and ahead of its release, SEGA has dropped a brand new trailer which shows off gameplay from all four playable characters.

The Final Horizon will be available to download from 5pm PST / 8pm EST / 10pm BST today, 28th September, and will allow you to play not only as Sonic, but Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, and we get a brief look at all of them in action. Long-time Sonic fans will be delighted to see the Cyclone, Tails’ mech from Sonic Adventure 2, while Amy and Knuckles’ gameplay focuses on combat and platforming.

Three new playable characters are good enough for free DLC, but this new update will also deliver some brand new story beats, challenges, and more, all in aid of a “climactic” end to Frontiers.

Here’s a rundown of the DLC’s plot from SEGA:

The additional narrative takes place before the final battle on Ouranos Island, where Sage reconsiders an unlikely scenario amongst her millions of calculations. With the assistance of Sage and Dr. Eggman, Sonic sets this new plan into motion, and accepts the challenge of converting the Cyber Corruption into a vast, previously untapped power source. Meanwhile, Amy, Knuckles, and Tails seek to do their part and begin searching for the Chaos Emeralds on Sonic’s behalf to change their fate.
