Torna – The Golden Country Expansion Pass Content Detailed by Executive Director Takahashi

Torna – The Golden Country Expansion Pass Content Detailed by Executive Director Takahashi

Hello, this is Tetsuya Takahashi, Executive Director at Monolith Soft. We recently announced Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country, an additional scenario for Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

It all started three years ago. Torna ~ The Golden Country was a part of our original prototype for the main game. More accurately, I suppose you could say that it was one of the potential story candidates included in our initial prototype.

It’s been five years since the release of Xenoblade Chronicles. We’ve accumulated quite a bit of production knowhow since then, and our process management has improved as well. Now we’re much better at knowing just how big of a game we can create at what level of quality based on a given volume of text. After looking at a variety of factors, we could tell that including Torna ~ The Golden Country in the main game would divert a major portion of the budget and development time we had allotted for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. We hadn’t shown anyone the prototype yet, and quickly decided against including this content, instead opting to take what we needed for the main game, which became the finished Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

For quite some time after that, Torna ~ The Golden Country slept on my computer’s hard drive, but when we decided to include a new scenario with the Expansion Pass, I knew that we had to revive Torna ~ The Golden Country and tell that story.

Story set 500 years before Xenoblade Chronicles 2

The story of Torna ~ The Golden Country covers not only the pasts of key characters from the main game like Jin, Mythra, Malos, and Praetor Amalthus, but will also spotlight characters like Lora and Addam, who factor heavily into the lore of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Ah, and you know that the main story in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the story of Rex and Pyra (Mythra), but Torna ~ The Golden Country follows another set of main characters, Jin and Lora. You’ll see what happened in Jin’s past, what kind of person Lora was, and even what the relationship was between Addam and Mythra. There were bits and pieces of their stories throughout the main game, but they’ll finally take shape in front of your very eyes. (The generic models used for some of the side characters in flashbacks in the main game will be given dedicated models.)

New adventures on a new map

The Tornan Titan will be added as a new field map in Torna ~ The Golden Country. A lot of other RPGs set their additional story sections on existing maps, but Torna ~ The Golden Country ’s maps will be entirely new. And in addition to the field map, we’ll add the capital city of Torna as a new town map. Given that these events take place 500 years ago, the playable areas in Torna ~ The Golden Country will be limited to Torna and the surrounding areas, but I’m sure you’ll still find these to be very rewarding to play.

Reworked battle system

Torna ~ The Golden Country is set in an era of history before Drivers and Blades had learned to cooperate seamlessly during battle, and so there will be a new battle system used in this expansion. The refined battle system will still be based on the one seen in the main game, but I hope you’ll enjoy this new take on it.

New music added

New songs have also been added to Torna ~ The Golden Country. They were composed by Mitsuda-san and some others who were involved with the main game. The feel of the new music is a bit more grown up, in keeping with the more grownup tone of Torna ~ The Golden Country overall. They’re played mostly on acoustic instruments, and have a real groove to them, so I’m sure you’ll really enjoy them.

Torna ~ The Golden Country is an additional scenario that is scheduled for release on September 14 for anyone with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and an Expansion Pass. And for those who have not yet played Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a stand-alone packaged version of Torna ~ The Golden Country will get a separate release on September 21. As I mentioned earlier, the story of Torna ~ The Golden Country is set 500 years before the main game. So it’s possible that players will view the main game a little differently if they play Torna ~ The Golden Country first. This packaged version will also include a code to the other Expansion Pass content besides Torna ~ The Golden Country into the main game, making it a great option as an entry point for anyone interested in experiencing XenobladeChronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country in the future.

We’ll still need a bit of time until it’s ready for release, but then you’ll get to enjoy all the new maps, new battles and the story of these new characters.

Nintendo crowns tournament winners, makes new announcements throughout the day

Nintendo finished the first day of the E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles with two competitive champions and a host of bonus announcements that built on today’s Nintendo Direct: E3 2018 video presentation.

Nintendo crowned ZeRo of Chile the champion of the Super Smash Bros. Invitational 2018 tournament. A longtime player of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, ZeRo defeated seven other top-ranked Super Smash Bros. players from around the world to successfully defend his title from Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Invitational in 2014. ZeRo emerged as the top player of the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game for the Nintendo Switch system. In the final match, ZeRo used Mario to defeat runner-up MkLeo of Mexico, who played as Sonic.

In both head-to-head and two-on-two matches, the tournament showcased new fighters like Ridley from the Metroid series and returning favorites from past games in the franchise.

In other competitive news, the GG BoyZ of Japan emerged triumphant at the Splatoon 2 World Championship. Made up of Taiji, etona, yamamicchi and Dynamon, the GG BoyZ inked their way to glory by defeating BackSquids, the German team representing Europe in the competition.

For details on the two tournaments visit: https://e3.nintendo.com/tournaments.

For fans who are excited to jump into new Splatoon 2 action for themselves, Nintendo revealed new details about the Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion DLC:

  • The new Octo Expansion for Splatoon 2 launches on the evening of Wednesday, June 13. This first paid DLC for Splatoon 2 adds a new single-player mode that features 80+ missions, new stories and the ability to play as an Octoling for the first time. The full version of the game is required to use Octo Expansion, which will be available in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch for $19.99.
  • An amiibo three-pack of an Octoling Girl, an Octoling Boy and an Octoling Octopus are coming later this year.
  • Nintendo will continue to support Splatoon 2 with free updates to gear, weapons and stages through the end of 2018.

Today’s Nintendo Treehouse: Live | E3 2018 show was host to some additional reveals throughout the day as well:

  • New amiibo figures for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate were shown for the first time. These figures, which included Ridley from the Metroid franchise and Inkling from the Splatoon franchise, go on sale at the same time as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo also confirmed that a Daisy amiibo figure was on the way.
  • Viewers got their first in-depth look at live gameplay of the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game for Nintendo Switch.
  • Viewers also got their first look at live gameplay for the Super Mario Party game for Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo smashes E3 with 2018 lineup, details about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Nintendo smashes E3 with 2018 lineup, details about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Nintendo opened its activities for the annual E3 2018 video game trade show with a bang – and a smash. Showing world-first footage of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo shared details about the latest entry in a series with sales of more than 40 million units worldwide. A new game built for the Nintendo Switch system, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lets up to eight players square off in action-packed battles that are all about smashing beloved video game characters off the screen. Legendary game worlds and fighters collide in the ultimate showdown at E3 2018, which runs through June 14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Nintendo made its announcements during its Nintendo Direct: E3 2018 video presentation, which can be viewed at https://e3.nintendo.com.

“At E3, we’re showing how Nintendo Switch continues to redefine play, with the broadest range of games people can enjoy together anytime, anywhere,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “Fans who’ve debated which Super Smash Bros. fighter is the best now have the chance to settle their differences once and for all, pitting familiar faces against fresh challengers on stages both new and old. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, and the arrival of Epic’s Fortnite on Nintendo Switch demonstrate the strong momentum Nintendo Switch continues to have through 2018 and beyond.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will include every single fighter ever featured in the series’ nearly two-decade run, making it one of the biggest crossover events in gaming history. Fans can enjoy returning favorites like Ice Climbers and Pokémon Trainer, as well as newly announced fighters like Ridley from the Metroid series and Inkling from the Splatoon series. The game supports a variety of controller options, including Nintendo GameCube controllers (original or newly designed), Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. With Nintendo Switch, players can throw down whenever and wherever they like in Handheld or Tabletop mode while enjoying online play.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate combines many stages and new items, with gameplay that makes it easy for players of all skill levels to jump in. All current Super Smash Bros. series amiibo figures are compatible with the game, and any fighter’s amiibo figure from other series will also be supported. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to launch on Dec. 7, exclusively for Nintendo Switch. It is being developed by Nintendo, Sora, Ltd. and BANDAI NAMCO Studios, and is directed by Masahiro Sakurai.

Nintendo also announced that Fortnite, the Battle Royale phenomenon from Epic Games, is available for Nintendo Switch – TODAY. Players can download it for free from the Nintendo eShop, then test their mettle in thrilling crucibles of combat. The action never stops with Fortnite on Nintendo Switch, where players can build and battle together anytime, anywhere. Team up online with friends in the same room or around the world. Weekly updates and new gameplay modes will keep the action fresh for seasoned Fortnite players and newcomers alike.

At its E3 booth this week in the Los Angeles Convention Center, Nintendo will give attendees their first chance to play Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, two Pokémon games launching for the Nintendo Switch system on Nov. 16 at a suggested retail price of $59.99 each. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! are a new way to experience Pokémon that lets players adventure with their partner Pokémon in the vibrant Kanto region, discover fresh and exciting Pokémon encounters and Trainer battles, as well as share the adventure cooperatively with a friend anytime, anywhere on one Nintendo Switch system. Players can even transfer Kanto region Pokémon into the game from the Pokémon GO app. These games serve as an entry point to the Pokémon series for newcomers, but they also provide fun and engaging experiences for Pokémon fans of all ages. A new accessory, called Poké Ball Plus, comes with Mythical Pokémon, Mew and is sold separately from the games. Poké Ball Plus includes a pressable analog stick and button, so players can control the new games entirely with the accessory, if they want. Nintendo is announcing two bundles, in which players can get Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! with one Poké Ball Plus at a suggested retail price of $99.99 each.

Other upcoming items announced during the Nintendo Direct include:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass owners also will gain access to Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country to be released on Sept. 14. In this new story mode, players uncover the full history of Jin and the fall of his homeland, Torna, which existed 500 years before the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 . This new storyline also will be available as a stand-alone retail package on Sept. 21. Full purchase details can be found at Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country.
  • Super Mario Party: Inspired by the original Mario Party board game play, the beloved series is coming to Nintendo Switch with new mini-games and play styles that make use of the Joy-Con controllers. Super Mario Party includes features like character-exclusive Dice Blocks that add depth to players’ strategy. Up to four players take turns rolling the dice, and individually race across the board searching for Stars. In Toad’s Rec Room, new gameplay links two games and two Nintendo Switch systems for side-by-side fun. The game launches Oct. 5.
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses: A new episode of the Fire Emblem series comes to Nintendo Switch for the first time in spring of 2019. The player can maneuver the main character freely and interact with other characters to build relationships and gather information at various points within the game. This turn-based tactical RPG will put new strategic twists on battling, with formations of troops supporting individual units on the battlefield. Players will get to know three main characters – Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude – who play key roles in the story.
  • DAEMON X MACHINA: A new fast-paced mech action game from Kenichiro Tsukuda is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2019. Players take their customizable Arsenal powered suit on a variety of missions to thwart the enemy at all costs. They can choose and equip their Arsenal with a multitude of weapons, obtain more from downed enemies and swap them on the fly to suit their strategy in the face of ever-changing threats.
  • Overcooked! 2: The kitchen mayhem returns in this sequel from Team17 and Ghost Town Games that’s brimming with even more recipes, characters, kitchens and co-op madness. Bake, barbecue or broil with up to three other players in wireless local and online play modes. Save the world from clumsy cooking when the frantic food-juggler arrives on Aug. 7.
  • Killer Queen Black: Redesigned from the ground up, the acclaimed arcade extravaganza that became a multiplayer phenomenon is coming to Nintendo Switch. Players can hop on a snail, hoard berries or wipe out the enemy’s queen to claim victory for their team in Liquid Bit and Bumble Bear Games’ Killer Queen Black, when it launches first on Nintendo Switch later this year.
  • Hollow Knight: Venture through the beautifully hand-drawn, mysterious landscapes of a vast forgotten kingdom in Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight, an action-adventure filled with gripping combat and haunting secrets. Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch also includes the new items, areas, characters and bosses from the currently released contact packs – all available today.
  • Octopath Traveler: Players can take another early look at Square Enix’s upcoming fantasy epic when the Octopath Traveler Prologue Demo arrives June 14 in Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch. Play the demo, then use the save data transfer feature to carry your choices into the main game, once purchased, where players can live the stories of each of the eight travelers and freely explore the world of Orsterra. Octopath Traveler is scheduled to launch on July 13.

Hero accessories and version 2.6.0 updates for Fire Emblem Heroes

Hero accessories and version 2.6.0 updates for Fire Emblem Heroes

Here are the changes you can expect:

Hero accessories

Accessories for Heroes’ mini units have been added! These accessories can be seen by other players in the Arena, so you can customize the look of your Heroes and show them off.

Accessories are planned to be available through events, quests, and more.
Note: Accessories will not alter a Hero’s stats or skills.

New Weapon Skills and options for the Weapon Refinery

Tiki: Dragon Scion, Tiki: Naga’s Voice”, Linde and Merric will be able to learn new unit-specific weapon skills at 5-star.

To learn weapon skills, tap Learn Skills in the Ally Growth menu.

Note: To access the Weapon Refinery, after clearing Book I, Chapter 13 in the main story, you must clear the second Intermission map, The Rite of Blades.

The Allies menu adjustment and expansion

Starting in version 2.6.0, each function in the Allies menu has been separated into related categories.

  • Menu options like Level Up, Learn Skills, and other options related to strengthening Heroes will be located in Ally Growth.
  • Menu options related to changing skills and accessories will be located in Change Equipment.
  • Ally Support and other options related to bonds with allies will be located in Interact with Allies.

Additionally, Catalog of Heroes and Hero Merit List, which were previously under Misc., will now be located in Interact with Allies.

An Auto-Learn function has been added and is located in Learn Skills. The function allows Heroes to use their accumulated SP to automatically learn available skills. If the Hero doesn’t have enough SP to learn all of the skills available to them, skills that fill empty slots will be learned first.

If a skill slot already has a skill equipped, a new skill for that slot will not be learned or equipped through Auto-Learn. To learn a new skill through Auto-Learn, any skill in the target slot must be unequipped in Equip Skills.

There are now eight types of favorite marks to use for your Heroes. In the top left of the menus where you select allies, if you tap the favorite mark (heart icon), you can reorder your Heroes based on the mark you choose. (Sorting simply by favorite will no longer be possible.) Heroes can now be sorted by accessory.

Arena Assault Scoring Changes

The way scoring works in Arena Assault is changing.

If Legendary Heroes or Heroes with blessings that match the season are deployed, the score will increase by 1 for each Hero.

Notes:

  • This change will take effect on 6/12/18 at 12:00 a.m. PT
  • This change will not affect the strength of enemy units in Arena Assault.
  • If Heroes are defeated during battle, the bonus from their blessing will still be counted.

To coincide with the change, the season starting on 6/12/18 at 12:00 a.m. PT will offer slightly more Hero Feathers for Rank Rewards.

Easier Shards and SP

To make strengthening your Heroes easier, the following changes have been made:

  • The amount of SP gained from leveling up has been increased.
  • The number of shards earned in the Training Tower has been increased.

Home Screen Labels

To make the function of each option clearer, labels have been added. This way the Home screen will be easier to understand for new players.

Other Changes

  • When logging in, the speed at which the Notifications are displayed has been increased.
  • If the results of an event have not been viewed, there will be a “!” icon displayed on the corresponding event.
  • Future Grand Conquests will indicate the points earned for an area after battle.
  • The weapon-type icon will be displayed for bonus allies in the Arena and Tempest Trials.
  • For summoning events that begin after the update, the colors of the featured Heroes’ summoning stones will be displayed.
  • A problem with the skill Spd Feint has been fixed. Heroes with Feint-type skills equipped can now use Rally skills on Heroes that have already had their stats boosted by other skills. Additionally, Heroes with Feint-type skills can have Rally skills used on them even if their stats have already been boosted. (Stat boosts from Rally skills will not stack, and each stat will have a limit on how much it can be boosted.)
