Reimagining how NBA fans and teams experience basketball with Together mode in Microsoft Teams

For NBA fans, basketball is about more than a sport—it’s about belonging to a community with a collective passion for the game, and the thrill of coming together to cheer on favorite players and teams. Players and teams, meanwhile, fuel their game with that explosive fan energy from the stands.

This year, however, the 2019-2020 season was set to restart on July 30th in Orlando—without any fans in attendance. Realizing it needed to reimagine a way to connect fans and players virtually, the NBA turned to Microsoft Teams.

This isn’t a net-new relationship. The NBA has long been an industry pioneer in embracing technology to augment and enrich its offerings. In fact, this past April, the NBA, and Microsoft established a multi-year alliance with the goal of creating next-gen experiences for basketball fans—starting with a new fan engagement platform offering personalized, live, and on-demand game broadcasts; historical video archives; and unique insights and analysis for NBA fans, coaches, and broadcasters.

And today, in partnership with the NBA, we are excited to announce a reimagined fan experience powered by a new feature in Microsoft Teams called Together mode. Together mode uses AI segmentation technology to bring people together into a shared background like a conference room, coffee shop, or arena. Using scientific principles of cognition and social perception, Together mode is more than a virtual background—it makes being together virtually actually feel like being together in-person. It’s easy to maintain natural eye contact, for instance, or register fellow participants’ emotions as they react to what’s happening—whether it’s a meeting announcement, a class presentation, or the sight of a favorite NBA player about to score a three-pointer.

Starting July 30, the NBA will outfit each game court with 17-foot-tall LED screens that wrap three sides of the arena. These “stands” will be populated with more than 300 cheering fans who will join the game using Together mode in Teams. Alongside a view of their fellow fans, participants can watch a live feed of the game right within Teams.

 “We are excited to partner with Microsoft to virtually incorporate NBA fans into our season restart,” said Sara Zuckert, Head of Next Gen Telecast, NBA. “This unique live game experience will allow fans to maintain a sense of community as they watch their favorite teams and players“

This new experience—the first to go live as a result of the NBA/Microsoft partnership—gives participating fans the feeling of sitting next to one another at a live game without leaving the comfort and safety of their homes. Players, meanwhile, will experience their energy and support as they dribble down the court and see fans’ real-time reaction. And viewers tuning in to the game from home will feel the crowd’s energy as well as they see the virtual stands filled with fans.

Just months from the launch of Xbox Series X, in today’s Xbox Games Showcase, we debuted the largest, most creatively diverse games lineup in console history, led by Halo Infinite – and all in Xbox Game Pass day one. Halo Infinite is the biggest and most-ambitious Halo ever, and today we provided the first glimpse of its stunning campaign gameplay, giving you a taste of what to expect this holiday season. From expansive new worlds in Fable, Avowed, and Everwild to unprecedented realism with Forza Motorsport, we took you back to some familiar universes and introduced a few you’ve yet to traverse.

Partner support for Xbox has never been stronger, and their creativity was on full display with world premieres of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, and much more all launching exclusively on Xbox consoles. We also announced an incredible partnership between Xbox and Bungie, bringing Destiny 2 to Xbox Game Pass this fall with access to previous expansions and the upcoming Destiny 2: Beyond Light, at no additional cost. Bungie is also releasing Destiny 2 Optimized for Xbox Series X with 4K resolution running at 60 frames per second.

Bungie is one of many developers bringing their titles to Xbox Game Pass. In fact, Xbox Game Pass members will be able to play every game in our Xbox Games Showcase, as part of their membership or free-to-play, when they launch.

Below, we’ve summarized everything revealed today, inclusive of 10 world premieres, 22 games being built to launch exclusively on Xbox consoles, projects from nine of our 15 Xbox Game Studios, and several of our partners. The games you saw today also take full advantage of the world’s most powerful console—Xbox Series X—to deliver unprecedented fidelity, performance, precision and immersion.

  • Halo Infinite (Xbox Game Studios – 343 Industries – Holiday 2020).  Halo Infinite is the biggest and most ambitious Halo game ever created. Fans of the Master Chief around the world got a first-ever look at Halo Infinite’s campaign, featuring new gameplay mechanics, bigger battles, epic vistas and more complex visual effects than ever before, utilizing the full power of Xbox Series X. With a flawless 60 frames per second locked for campaign gameplay, and the freedom to explore a Halo ring that is several times larger than the last two Halo games combined, Halo Infinite will immerse players in the next chapter of the Master Chief’s journey. World Premieres

  • As Dusk Falls (Xbox Game Studios – INTERIOR/NIGHT). As Dusk Falls is an original interactive drama from INTERIOR/NIGHT, a new studio comprised of a mix of award-winning industry veterans and emerging new talent. Headed by Caroline Marchal, former lead game designer at Quantic Dream, the studio is focused on creating ambitious and innovative interactive narratives. As Dusk Falls is a multi-generational story set in the American Southwest about resilience, sacrifice and how the mistakes of the older generation transmit to the younger. What begins as a focused tale of two families trapped in a hostage situation, becomes a sprawling epic about how people grow and change over decades.   • Avowed (Xbox Game Studios – Obsidian). Obsidian Entertainment’s next epic, first-person RPG set in the fantasy world of Eora.
  • Fable (Xbox Game Studios – Playground Games). A new beginning for the legendary franchise. Explore a land of fantastical creatures and wondrous places. Developed by Playground Games for Xbox Series X, and Windows 10 and coming to Xbox Game Pass.
  • Forza Motorsport (Xbox Game Studios – Turn 10 Studios). The Xbox Series X is about speed and immersion, connecting players to the Forza universe, and to one another, like never before. Currently early in development, Forza Motorsport will run at 4K, 60 frames per second with scenes connected and dynamic. Ray tracing is coming to ForzaTech, creating a dynamic world where everything is connected – from surfaces of cars reflecting off each other, brilliant red paint reflected off of detailed track surfaces and light and shadow interplay.   • The Gunk (Thunderful Publishing). From the creators of the SteamWorld franchise – the action series that tells the tales of steam-driven robot adventures and that has garnered more than 100 awards and nominations – comes a completely new game, The Gunk. Embark on an all-new adventure in a vast and exotic world where you’ll encounter terrifying enemies and challenging puzzles on your quest to unravel the mystery of a forgotten planet, while saving it in the process.   • Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis (SEGA Corporation – 2021). Online action RPG Phantasy Star Online 2, well known for its unparalleled character customization and battle action which captivated the world.   • Warhammer 40,000: Darktide (Fatshark – 2021). From the developers of the multi-million award-winning co-op franchise Vermintide, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a new 4-player co-op game set in hive Tertium. Fight together with your friends against hordes of enemies in this new Warhammer: 40,000 adventure.

Updates on highly anticipated games

  • CrossfireX (Microsoft – Smilegate Entertainment – 2020). A legendary PC franchise comes to console in a fast-paced first-person shooter offering a variety of exhilarating multiplayer experiences and a cinematic campaign that explores the global conflict between the world’s two most formidable private military factions.
  • Destiny 2: Beyond Light (Bungie – November 10, 2020). Bungie presents Destiny 2: Beyond Light – the next chapter of the critically acclaimed action sci-fi epic universe of Destiny 2. Join your fellow Guardians and bring down the empire at any cost – even if it means wielding the Darkness itself. Destiny 2 will also come to Xbox Game Pass in September, providing members access to all current Destiny 2 standard edition expansions (seasonal content sold separately), including the standard edition of the upcoming Beyond Light when it releases this November.
  • Everwild (Xbox Game Studios – Rare). Inspired by the beauty of the natural world around us, Everwild is a brand-new game in development from Rare where unique and unforgettable experiences await in a natural and magical world. Play as an Eternal as you explore and build bonds with the world around you. Everwild will be available on Xbox Series X, Windows 10 PC and Xbox Game Pass.
  • Grounded (Xbox Game Studios – Obsidian Entertainment – July 28, 2020). Get ready take part in the development of your next favorite game. Grounded, the co-op survival adventure game with a narrative-led hook is ready to bring the backyard to you. Combining elements from the RPG world with the best elements of survival games, you and up to 3 other players explore the backyard from the perspective of an ant to piece together how to return back to normal life size. Along the way you’ll run into both peaceful and very, very hostile insects; all fighting to survive right behind the house. Gather, craft and build bases with everyday objects you find in the yard, or just feed your friends to the spiders.
  • The Medium (Bloober Team – Holiday 2020). Discover a dark mystery only a medium can solve. Travel to an old communist resort and use your unique psychic abilities to uncover its disturbing secrets, solve dual-reality puzzles, survive encounters with sinister spirits, and explore two realities at the same time.
  • The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon (Private Division – Obsidian Entertainment – September 9, 2020). The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon adds a substantial amount of content to The Outer Worlds‘ darkly humorous universe. Play a brand-new noir-tinged adventure that takes players to the Gorgon Asteroid to investigate the mysterious origin of Adrena-Time. While there, you’ll find new weapons and armor, perks, flaws, along with the same freedom to solve problems that made the original game so rewarding. And those who played The Outer Worlds with Xbox Game Pass, you’ll be able to grab this and future adventures, or the expansion pass packaging both adventures for an extra 10% off.
  • Psychonauts 2 (Xbox Game Studios – Double Fine). Psychonauts 2 is a mind-bending trip through the strange worlds hiding inside our brains. Freshly-minted special agent and acrobat extraordinaire Razputin “Raz” Aquato returns to unpack emotional baggage and expand mental horizons. Along the way he’ll help new friends, like this magical mote of light voiced (and sung) by Jack Black. Raz must use his powers to unravel dark mysteries about the Psychonauts team and his own family origins.
  • Tell Me Why (Xbox Game Studios – Dontnod Entertainment – August 27). Tell Me Why is a new Xbox Game Studios exclusive game from Dontnod Entertainment, the studio who created the beloved and award-winning franchise Life is Strange. In this intimate mystery, you play as twins Tyler and Alyson Ronan, exploring the memories of their joyful but troubled childhood in beautiful small-town Alaska. Using the supernatural bond that allows the twins to interact with memories of past, choose memory paths to determine the outcome and uncover their personal story across three chapters beginning this August 27.

  • Balan Wonderworld (Square Enix). Welcome to a wonderous all-action show, the likes of which has never been seen before! Balan Wonderworld is a wondrous action platformer game themed around the Balan Theatre. Led by the enigmatic maestro named Balan, the stars of the show Emma and Leo will use special abilities from a multitude of characterful costumes as they adventure in the bizarre and imaginary land of Wonderworld. Here memories and vistas from the real-world mix with the things that people hold dear. Twelve different tales await our stars in the Wonderworld, each with their own unique quirks. They will explore all corners of these labyrinthine stages, filled with a myriad of tricks and traps, to get to the heart of each story.
  • Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition (Square Enix – Dec. 4, 2020). The Legend is Reborn in this all-new grand adventure as the revered Dragon Quest series makes its debut on Xbox with Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. Seeing the big picture: How we’re leveraging deep learning to discover new security attacks

The application of deep learning and other machine learning methods to threat detection on endpoints, email and docs, apps, and identities drives a significant piece of the coordinated defense delivered by Microsoft Threat Protection. Within each domain as well as across domains, machine learning plays a critical role in analyzing and correlating massive amounts of data to detect increasingly evasive threats and build a complete picture of attacks.

On endpoints, Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (Microsoft Defender ATP) detects malware and malicious activities using various types of signals that span endpoint and network behaviors. Signals are aggregated and processed by heuristics and machine learning models in the cloud. In many cases, the detection of a particular type of behavior, such as registry modification or a PowerShell command, by a single heuristic or machine learning model is sufficient to create an alert.

Detecting more sophisticated threats and malicious behaviors considers a broader view and is significantly enhanced by fusion of signals occurring at different times. For example, an isolated event of file creation is generally not a very good indication of malicious activity, but when augmented with an observation that a scheduled task is created with the same dropped file, and combined with other signals, the file creation event becomes a significant indicator of malicious activity. To build a layer for these kinds of abstractions, Microsoft researchers instrumented new types of signals that aggregate individual signals and create behavior-based detections that can expose more advanced malicious behavior.

In this blog, we describe an application of deep learning, a category of machine learning algorithms, to the fusion of various behavior detections into a decision-making model. Since its deployment, this deep learning model has contributed to the detection of many sophisticated attacks and malware campaigns. As an example, the model uncovered a new variant of the Bondat worm that attempts to turn affected machines into zombies for a botnet. Bondat is known for using its network of zombie machines to hack websites or even perform cryptocurrency mining. This new version spreads using USB devices and then, once on a machine, achieves a fileless persistence. We share more technical details about this attack in latter sections, but first we describe the detection technology that caught it.

Powerful, high-precision classification model for wide-ranging data

Identifying and detecting malicious activities within massive amounts of data processed by Microsoft Defender ATP require smart automation methods and AI. Machine learning classifiers digest large volumes of historical data and apply automatically extracted insights to score each new data point as malicious or benign. Machine learning-based models may look at, for example, registry activity and produce a probability score, which indicates the probability of the registry write being associated with malicious activity. To tie everything together, behaviors are structured into virtual process trees, and all signals associated with each process tree are aggregated and used for detecting malicious activity.

With virtual process trees and signals of different types associated to these trees, there are still large amounts of data and noisy signals to sift through. Since each signal occurs in the context of a process tree, it’s necessary to fuse these signals in the chronological order of execution within the process tree. Data ordered this way requires a powerful model to classify malicious vs. benign trees.

Our solution comprises several deep learning building blocks such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (LSTM-RNN). The neural network can take behavior signals that occur chronologically in the process tree and treat each batch of signals as a sequence of events. These sequences can be collected and classified by the neural network with high precision and detection coverage.

Behavior-based and machine learning-based signals

Microsoft Defender ATP researchers instrument a wide range of behavior-based signals. For example, a signal can be for creating an entry in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

A folder and executable file name added to this location automatically runs after the machine starts. This generates persistence on the machine and hence can be considered an indicator of compromise (IoC). Nevertheless, this IoC is generally not enough to generate detection because legitimate programs also use this mechanism.

Another example of behavior-based signal is service start activity. A program that starts a service through the command line using legitimate tools like net.exe is not considered a suspicious activity. However, starting a service created earlier by the same process tree to obtain persistence is an IoC.

On the other hand, machine learning-based models look at and produce signals on different pivots of a possible attack vector. For example, a machine learning model trained on historical data to discern between benign and malicious command lines will produce a score for each processed command line.

Consider the following command line:

 cmd /c taskkill /f /im someprocess.exe

This line implies that taskill.exe is evoked by cmd.exe to terminate a process with a particular name. While the command itself is not necessarily malicious, the machine learning model may be able to recognize suspicious patterns in the name of the process being terminated, and provide a maliciousness probability, which is aggregated with other signals in the process tree. The result is a sequence of events during a certain period of time for each virtual process tree.

The next step is to use a machine learning model to classify this sequence of events.

Data modeling

The sequences of events described in the previous sections can be represented in several different ways to then be fed into machine learning models.

The first and simple way is to construct a “dictionary” of all possible events, and to assign a unique identifier (index) to each event in the dictionary. This way, a sequence of events is represented by a vector, where each slot constitutes the number of occurrences (or other related measure) for an event type in the sequence.

For example, if all possible events in the system are X,Y, and Z, a sequence of events “X,Z,X,X” is represented by the vector [3, 0, 1], implying that it contains three events of type X, no events of type Y, and a single event of type Z. This representation scheme, widely known as “bag-of-words”,  is suitable for traditional machine learning models and has been used for a long time by machine learning practitioners. A limitation of the bag-of-words representation is that any information about the order of events in the sequence is lost.

The second representation scheme is chronological. Figure 1 shows a typical process tree: Process A raises an event X at time t1, Process B raises an event Z at time t2, D raises X at time t3, and E raises X at time t4. Now the entire sequence “X,Z,X,X”  (or [1,3,1,1] replacing events by their dictionary indices) is given to the machine learning model.

In threat detection, the order of occurrence of different events is important information for the accurate detection of malicious activity. Therefore, it’s desirable to employ a representation scheme that preserves the order of events, as well as machine learning models that are capable of consuming such ordered data. This capability can be found in the deep learning models described in the next section.

Deep CNN-BiLSTM

Deep learning has shown great promise in sequential tasks in natural language processing like sentiment analysis and speech recognition. Microsoft Defender ATP uses deep learning for detecting various attacker techniques, including malicious PowerShell.

For the classification of signal sequences, we use a Deep Neural Network that combines two types of building blocks (layers): Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (BiLSTM-RNN).

CNNs are used in many tasks relating to spatial inputs such as images, audio, and natural language. A key property of CNNs is the ability to compress a wide-field view of the input into high-level features.  When using CNNs in image classification, high-level features mean parts of or entire objects that the network can recognize. In our use case, we want to model long sequences of signals within the process tree to create high-level and localized features for the next layer of the network. These features could represent sequences of signals that appear together within the data, for example, create and run a file, or save a file and create a registry entry to run the file the next time the machine starts. Features created by the CNN layers are easier to digest for the ensuing LSTM layer because of this compression and featurization.

LSTM deep learning layers are famous for results in sentence classification, translation, speech recognition, sentiment analysis, and other sequence modeling tasks. Bidirectional LSTM combine two layers of LSTMs that process the sequence in opposite directions.

The combination of the two types of neural networks stacked one on top of the other has shown to be very effective and can classify long sequences of hundreds of items and more. The final model is a combination of several layers: one embedding layer, two CNNs, and a single BiLSTM. The input to this model is a sequence of hundreds of integers representing the signals associated with a single process tree during a unit of time. Figure 2 shows the architecture of our model.

Since the number of possible signals in the system is very high, input sequences are passed through an embedding layer that compresses high-dimensional inputs into low-dimensional vectors that can be processed by the network. In addition, similar signals get a similar vector in lower-dimensional space, which helps with the final classification.

Initial layers of the network create increasingly high-level features, and the final layer performs sequence classification. The output of the final layer is a score between 0 and 1 that indicates the probability of the sequence of signals being malicious. This score is used in combination with other models to predict if the process tree is malicious.

Catching real-world threats

Microsoft Defender ATP’s endpoint detection and response capabilities use this Deep CNN-BiLSTM model to catch and raise alerts on real-world threats. As mentioned, one notable attack that this model uncovered is a new variant of the Bondat worm, which was seen propagating in several organizations through USB devices.

Even with an arguably inefficient propagation method, the malware could persist in an organization as users continue to use infected USB devices. For example, the malware was observed in hundreds of machines in one organization. Although we detected the attack during the infection period, it continued spreading until all malicious USB drives were collected. Figure 4 shows the infection timeline.

The attack drops a JavaScript payload, which it runs directly in memory using wscript.exe. The JavaScript payload uses a randomly generated filename as a way to evade detections. However, Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI) exposes malicious script behaviors.

To spread via USB devices, the malware leverages WMI to query the machine’s disks by calling “SELECT * FROM Win32_DiskDrive”. When it finds a match for “/usb” (see Figure 5), it copies the JavaScript payload to the USB device and creates a batch file on the USB device’s root folder. The said batch file contains the execution command for the payload. As part of its social engineering technique to trick users into running the malware in the removable device, it creates a LNK file on the USB pointing to the batch file.

The malware terminates processes related to antivirus software or debugging tools. For Microsoft Defender ATP customers, tamper protection prevents the malware from doing this. Notably, after terminating a process, the malware pops up a window that imitates a Windows error message to make it appear like the process crashed (See figure 6).

The malware communicates with a remote command-and-control (C2) server by implementing a web client (MSXML). Each request is encrypted with RC4 using a randomly generated key, which is sent within the “PHPSESSID” cookie value to allow attackers to decrypt the payload within the POST body.

Every request sends information about the machine and its state following the output of the previously executed command. The response is saved to disk and then parsed to extract commands within an HTML comment tag. The first five characters from the payload are used as key to decrypt the data, and the commands are executed using the eval() method. Figures 7 and 8 show the C2 communication and HTML comment eval technique.

Once the command is parsed and evaluated by the JavaScript engine, any code can be executed on an affected machine, for example, download other payloads, steal sensitive info, and exfiltrate stolen data. For this Bondat campaign, the malware runs coin mining or coordinated distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

The malware’s activities triggered several signals throughout the attack chain. The deep learning model inspected these signals and the sequence with which they occurred, and determined that the process tree was malicious, raising an alert:

  1. Persistence—The malware copies itself into the Startup folder and drops a .lnk file pointing to the malware copy that opens when the computer starts.
  2. Renaming a known operating system tool—The malware renames exe into a random filename.
  3. Dropping a file with the same filename as legitimate tools—The malware impersonates legitimate system tools by dropping a file with a similar name to a known tool.
  4. Suspicious command line—The malware tries to delete itself from the previous location using a command-line executed by a process spawned by exe.
  5. Suspicious script content—Obfuscated JavaScript payload used to hide the attacker’s intentions.
  6. Suspicious network communication—The malware connects to the domain legitville[.]com.

Conclusion

Modeling a process tree, given different signals that happen at different times, is a complex task. It requires powerful models that can remember long sequences and still be able to generalize well enough to churn out high-quality detections. The Deep CNN-BiLSTM model we discussed in this blog is a powerful technology that helps Microsoft Defender ATP achieve this task. Today, this deep learning-based solution contributes to Microsoft Defender ATP’s capability to detect evolving threats like Bondat.

Microsoft Defender ATP raises alerts for these deep learning-driven detections, enabling security operations teams to respond to attacks using Microsoft Defender ATP’s other capabilities, like threat and vulnerability management, attack surface reduction, next-generation protection, automated investigation and response, and Microsoft Threat Experts. Notably, these alerts inform behavioral blocking and containment capabilities, which add another layer of protection by blocking threats if they somehow manage to start running on machines.

The impact of deep learning-based protections on endpoints accrues to the broader Microsoft Threat Protection (MTP), which combines endpoint signals with threat data from email and docs, identities, and apps to provide cross-domain visibility. MTP harnesses the power of Microsoft 365 security products to deliver unparalleled coordinated defense that detects, blocks, remediates, and prevents attacks across an organization’s Microsoft 365 environment. Through machine learning and AI technologies like the deep-learning model we discussed in this blog, MTP automatically analyzes cross-domain data to build a complete picture of each attack, eliminating the need for security operations centers (SOC) to manually build and track the end-to-end attack chain and relevant details. MTP correlates and consolidates attack evidence into incidents, so SOCs can save time and focus on critical tasks like expanding investigations and proacting threat hunting.

Progress on our goal to be carbon negative by 2030

In January, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella, President Brad Smith, and Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood launched a bold new environmental sustainability initiative focusing on carbon, water, waste and biodiversity. We began this work by announcing one of the most ambitious carbon commitments put forward by any company: Microsoft will be carbon negative by 2030 and remove from the environment more carbon than we have emitted since our founding by 2050. We outlined a detailed plan to get there and committed to providing updates on our progress. We have been working hard to turn our commitments into action and, today, we are announcing seven important new steps on our path to be carbon negative by 2030.

Enabling cross-sector business transformation

Together with eight other corporations leading the way to a climate-stable future, we have launched a new coalition, Transform to Net Zero. Guided by science and transparency, the coalition will work to accelerate business action toward a net zero carbon economy. Once an organization sets sustainability goals, the hard work of transforming its business to meet them begins. We have heard from both those with carbon goals and those that want to engage but don’t know where to start that they need information and tools to close the gap between intention and transformation. The coalition will begin by bringing together industry leaders with some of the world’s most ambitious carbon goals and will work to create playbooks on how to achieve net zero. The founding members are A.P. Moeller – Maersk, Danone, Mercedes-Benz AG, Microsoft, Natura & Co., Nike, Starbucks, Unilever and Wipro. The Environmental Defense Fund is the founding NGO member and BSR will serve as secretariat.

The Transform to Net Zero coalition will focus on moving beyond commitments to business transformation. Working together, members will work to enable all businesses to achieve net zero emissions by: sharing the business transformation each company is undertaking to achieve net zero emissions by 2050; delivering robust emission reductions across the business and value chains; working jointly with our partners across supply chains; innovating and investing at scale in products, services and business models that amplify impact; and engaging with policymakers to incentivize progress toward net zero. Importantly, the coalition will also focus on ensuring that the coming transition to a low-carbon economy is an equitable and just one.

Empowering our customers

Today, we’re also announcing the private preview of a new product offering, the Microsoft Sustainability Calculator. It’s challenging to make and meet meaningful carbon reduction goals without the ability to measure carbon emissions. The Microsoft Sustainability Calculator provides our cloud customers transparency into their total carbon emissions – Scopes 1, 2 and 3 – resulting from their cloud usage. Microsoft is the only cloud provider to provide full transparency to customers across all three scopes of emissions.

Using AI and advanced analytics, the Microsoft Sustainability Calculator provides actionable insights on how to reduce emissions, the ability to forecast emissions, and simplifies carbon reporting. It uses consistent and accurate carbon accounting to quantify the impact of Microsoft cloud services on your environmental footprint. It calculates how moving additional applications and services to the cloud will help further reduce your emissions. It easily identifies and compiles reports for voluntary or statutory reporting requirements.

Reducing our own carbon emissions

To reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions to near zero, we need to change how we operate. We’re on the path to obtaining renewable energy power purchase agreements for 100% of the day-to-day power of our data centers by the middle of this decade. Today, we’re additionally announcing that we’re aiming to eliminate our dependency on diesel fuel by 2030.

Cloud providers around the world rely on diesel-powered generators for backup power to support continuous data center operations. While diesel fuel accounts for less than 1% of our overall emissions, we believe it’s important to help accelerate the global transition away from fossil fuels. We’re charting a new course using low-carbon fuel sources, including hydrogen and energy storage. We recognize the challenges this might entail and that we need help in developing a robust supply chain for these fuels and advancements in battery technology, but we’re ready to work with partners across the world while leveraging investments from our Climate Innovation Fund to make this a reality.

On July 1, we extended our internal carbon tax to every part of our operations, including Scope 3. Additionally, we’ve updated our Supplier Code of Conduct. Suppliers will now calculate and report their Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions data. In the upcoming months, we’ll be working with our suppliers on a phased approach to develop a timeline, new ideas, tools and processes. This reporting is the first significant step toward helping our suppliers reduce their emissions in alignment with Microsoft’s goals of transparency in emissions reductions.

Removing our own carbon emissions

Our climate commitments require us to reduce our carbon emissions by more than half by 2030 and remove the rest, while also removing all of our historical emissions since we were founded in 1975 by 2050. We aren’t waiting until 2030 to get started. This fiscal year, Microsoft is taking concrete steps to remove 1 million metric tons of carbon from the environment. As the first step, this week we will issue a groundbreaking request for proposal (RFP) to source that carbon removal from a range of nature- and technology-based solutions that are net negative and verified to a high degree of scientific integrity.

To ensure that our funding will maximize carbon being taken out of the atmosphere, we are doubling down on scientific verification of each project, and using this RFP to harvest and share best available science and market intelligence on carbon removal. Each project will be rigorously vetted and verified by Microsoft as well as our third-party scientific and market advisors, including NGO Winrock International and the advisory firm Carbon Direct, which brings together leading climate science academics.

This is a first-of-its-kind approach and we don’t expect to get everything right. We will learn what works and doesn’t, improving our approach along the way. We will also publicly share our learnings from this process so others can accelerate their own carbon removal efforts.

Using our balance sheet

We’re announcing our first investment from the $1 billion Climate Innovation Fund that Amy Hood announced in January. We will invest $50 million in Energy Impact Partners’ (EIP) global platform for innovation of new technologies to transform the world’s energy and transportation systems, the two sectors that account for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions. EIP is a leading venture capital firm focused on decarbonized, decentralized energy industry transition that shares learnings among partners and facilitates collaboration.

Investing in climate equity and environmental justice

Finally, we’re taking a step beyond what we announced in January. We recognize that climate and environmental issues don’t affect every community the same way and that we need to address environmental equity as a broader issue. Today, we’re announcing a new innovative partnership with Sol Systems, a renewable energy developer and investor, for 500 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy that includes investments in communities disproportionately affected by environmental challenges.

This is the single largest renewable energy portfolio investment Microsoft has ever made, and is about a quarter of all of our previously procured renewable energy. Prior to this partnership, the total amount of renewable energy Microsoft has procured is approximately 1.9 gigawatts. To put it in context, 500 MW would power more than 70,000 homes in the US per year.

Some communities are disproportionately affected by environmental issues. The data shows that black and African American people in the United States are exposed to 1.54 times more hazardous pollution than white people and to 50% higher rates of particulate pollution than the general population. Researchers connect exposure to these increased level of pollutants to higher rates of asthma, lung cancer and heart disease.

Our work with Sol Systems is a first-of-its-kind initiative tying the purchasing of renewable energy to environmental justice and equity in under-resourced communities. Putting into action planning that started in December 2019, this partnership will:

  • Develop a portfolio of 500MW of solar energy projects in the US in under-resourced communities, working with local leaders and prioritizing minority and women-owned businesses
  • Provide at least $50 million for community-led grants and investments that support educational programs, job and career training, habitat restoration and programs that support access to clean energy and energy efficiency
  • Focus on communities that are economically under-resourced, disproportionately impacted by pollution and/or lack access to the benefits of the clean energy transition
  • Ensure that community benefits are realized with accountability measures, including using third-party evaluators to quantify and document social and environmental outcomes of the initiative

As a result of this agreement, Microsoft will be closer to achieving its goals of shifting to 100% renewable energy by 2025 and help address issues of climate equity and environmental justice.

Our mission is to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. This is in line with our belief that “the purpose of business is to produce profitable solutions to the problems of people and planet.” That’s why we’re working every day to address the climate crisis. It is good for the planet and it is good for Microsoft.

We cannot achieve our sustainability ambitions alone – this update reflects an extraordinary amount of hard work and dedication across Microsoft and with customers, partners, NGOs and others around the world. Working together, we can build a more sustainable future.

Customers embrace remote everything, purpose-driven digital for a better future

In Sri Lanka, a cloud-based auction system keeps buyers and sellers socially distanced during COVID-19, safeguards a 150-year old tea industry, and protects the livelihoods of almost 2 million people.

Microsoft Inspire, our annual partner conference, kicks off tomorrow and we have transitioned the event to an all-digital format to maintain social distancing amid the global pandemic. This new format requires an evolution in how we engage with our partners to share content and ideas while providing an opportunity to connect with each other, consider the influential tech trends that lay ahead, and work together to bring innovation to life for our mutual customers. This change in approach exemplifies the many ways customers across industries are adapting in a COVID-19 world. By using digital technologies, they are becoming more resilient, accelerating their recovery, and maneuvering to anticipate customer needs.

FedEx worker

FedEx and Microsoft combine a global digital logistics network and the power of the intelligent cloud to transform commerce.

There are many examples this past quarter of how our customers are embracing change, including “remote everything,” while uncovering innovation — and opportunity — in a new normal. In a multiyear collaboration with FedEx, we shared plans to reinvent the end-to-end commerce experience globally, creating opportunities for FedEx customers and enabling businesses to better compete in a growing digital landscape powered by Microsoft Azure and Dynamics 365. We also launched a cloud platform in partnership with Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) and Adobe to provide WBA customers with personalized health care and shopping experiences, further enhancing WBA’s loyalty program and advancing its digital transformation. Plus, we are continuing to partner with software companies like Workday and SAS to deliver new solutions at scale on Azure to help our joint customers improve business performance with our cloud technologies. Collaborating with these companies and other ISVs allows us to introduce more repeatable solutions into the marketplace and accelerate our customers’ cloud journey.

Medical worker using HoloLens

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in the United Kingdom uses Microsoft HoloLens to protect doctors while providing patient care amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In healthcare, the industry continues to make advances in research and primary care to prevent infection, treat, or find a vaccine for COVID-19. In support of those and other efforts, we launched Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare. It is our first industry-specific cloud offering that brings together trusted and integrated capabilities for customers and partners to enrich patient engagement and connect health teams to improve collaboration, decision-making and operational efficiencies. We also announced alliances with ImmunityBio to perform computational analysis on the coronavirus using the power of our cloud, and UnitedHealth Group to launch ProtectWell™, a return-to-workplace protocol powered by Microsoft cloud and AI technologies that helps manage employee symptom screening to create a safer work environment. In London, doctors at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust have adopted HoloLens to limit the number of clinicians needing to enter high-risk areas of their hospital during COVID-19, while maintaining the highest levels of care and saving up to 700 items of personal protective equipment (PPE) per ward each week. Baltimore, Maryland-based Johns Hopkins shared how it is combining the power of Azure and AI with its research expertise to support its inHealth Precision Medicine Analytics Platform to drive new medical discoveries and improve disease management. NHSX/NHS Digital are enabling organizations across England to support first-line workers during the pandemic, providing as many as 1.2 million workers with Microsoft 365 digital tools while Premera Blue Cross, the leading health insurance provider in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, has deployed 500 Surface devices for its office workers to deliver wellness and prevention care to more than 2 million of its members.

In financial services, BNY Mellon announced the launch of three new data and analytics solutions offerings and the expansion of our relationship to build data, technology and content solutions for investment managers. Volkswagen Financial Services is adopting a DevOps approach to help consumers and businesses buy and lease VW vehicles and fleets across 80 web apps in nearly 10 countries. And in the Netherlands, Rabobank is strengthening client relationships and driving sustainable growth by migrating 40,000 employees to Microsoft 365 to deliver a secure and cooperative workplace experience.

In manufacturing and logistics, we announced a partnership with Sony Semiconductor Solutions to make AI-powered smart cameras and video analytics easier to access and deploy across industries – for instance, a manufacturer might use smart cameras to identify hazards on its manufacturing floor in real-time before injuries can occur. We also shared how we are working with Hitachi to build resilient supply chains and equip first-line workers with predictive maintenance and remote assist capabilities to boost productivity and operational efficiency. Additionally, GE Aviation announced they are offering a new digital fuel dashboard at no cost to commercial airline customers using its Azure-enabled event measurement system as a way of providing operational efficiency and agility to customers affected by the pandemic.

Mobile virus testing center

Citizen Care Pod Corporation, based in Canada, collaborates with WZMH Architects, PCL Construction, Insight Enterprises and Microsoft to launch a custom mobile testing unit to help reopen the economy.

Regardless of industry, organizations are embracing these technologies as part of business continuity planning and as a strategy to modernize operations and customer experiences. PCL Construction began manufacturing and assembling Citizen Care Pods, retrofitted from shipping containers and powered by our cloud and AI technologies to support reliable, convenient COVID-19 testing for patients. Capitol Records is using our Power Platform to share marketing information across the product lifecycle, helping facilitate and streamline cross label projects, reduce costs and empower employees through no-code application development. Competitive esports organization Cloud9 is giving its teams an edge over opponents by combining data scientists and our cloud to find meaningful insights to boost individual and team performance, and our work with the Chattanooga Film Festival helped provide virtual experiences for the community under a shelter-in-place order, hosting the feature and film content on our cloud and supporting live events on Teams. In Sri Lanka, the coronavirus very nearly shut down the country’s renowned tea industry, so the Sri Lanka Tea Board and its Tea Traders Associations, with the help of a local Microsoft partner, developed an e-auction system using Azure and Teams to maintain social distancing and save almost 2 million jobs.

As organizations adapt to a COVID-19 world, their sense of purpose is taking on new meaning and encompassing where they are uniquely equipped to leverage technology innovation for good. This past quarter highlighted multiple examples of this trend, which we call “purpose-driven digital,” the art and science of leveraging technology innovation to drive business and societal outcomes for good. At Microsoft, we share this purpose and are honored to be a trusted partner and strategic advisor as we work with customers to bring new innovations to life now and in the days ahead.

Sea of Thieves passes 15 million players since March 2018 launch

Summary

It’s both thrilling and humbling to share with you that Sea of Thieves has been played by more than fifteen million players since our launch in March 2018.

The way that the game and its community has continued to grow has been amazing to see. It was only in January of this year when we shared that 10 million people had played the game! We’re also humbled that more people have played Sea of Thieves in the first six months of 2020 than who played in the whole of 2019, which was more than 2018.

Last month – June 2020 – was also the biggest month so far for Sea of Thieves in terms of active players, with more than 3.3M players setting sail. A contributing factor to this growth has been our recent launch on Steam. We’ve been blown away by the support we’ve seen from the Steam community, with over 1M copies of the game having been sold so far and the game regularly appearing in the top selling and most played games charts.

On behalf of all of us at Rare, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who’s ever played Sea of Thieves for helping to get us this far. It’s a game that we love making, and there’s plenty more to come. See you on the seas.

Microsoft offers free, educational virtual summer camps for students

Free virtual summer camps

If this summer looks a little different for your family, you are not alone. Many summer camps have decided to cancel due to social distancing recommendations—meaning fewer learning opportunities for students and added responsibilities for parents.

With families in mind, Microsoft created Passport to Digital Fun, a free, virtual summer camp with weeks of interactive workshops. To spark your student’s curiosity and continue their education over the summer, campers will receive a stamp to add to their digital passport each time they complete a workshop. This allows them to document their summer learning journey as they travel through different experiences and master various skill sets.

Through August, hundreds of sessions will be hosted as Microsoft Teams Live events. You can visit the calendar to browse options and register for specific workshops by time zone, so that you and your student can choose what best fits their schedule, interests, and learning needs.

Court ruling does not change ability for companies to transfer data between EU and US using the Microsoft cloud

Today, the Court of Justice for the European Union issued a ruling in a case examining transfers of data from the EU. We appreciate that some of our customers may have questions about the impact of this ruling.

We want to be clear: If you are a commercial customer, you can continue to use Microsoft services in compliance with European law. The Court’s ruling does not change your ability to transfer data today between the EU and U.S. using the Microsoft cloud.

For years we have provided customers with overlapping protections under both the Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) and Privacy Shield frameworks for data transfers. Although today’s ruling invalidated the use of Privacy Shield moving forward, the SCCs remain valid. Our commercial customers are already protected under SCCs.

Azure IoT Connector for FHIR for health teams now in preview

Today, Microsoft released the preview of Azure IoT Connector for FHIR—a fully managed feature of the Azure API for FHIR. The connector empowers health teams with the technology for a scalable end-to-end pipeline to ingest, transform, and manage Protected Health Information (PHI) data from devices using the security of FHIR® APIs.

Telehealth and remote monitoring. It’s long been talked about in the delivery of healthcare, and while some areas of health have created targeted use cases in the last few years, the availability of scalable telehealth platforms that can span multiple devices and schemas has been a barrier. Yet in a matter of months, COVID-19 has accelerated the discussion. We have an urgent need for care teams to find secure and scalable ways to deliver remote monitoring platforms and to extend their services to patients in the home environment.

Unlike other services that can use generic video services and data transfer in virtual settings, telehealth visits and remote monitoring in healthcare require data pipelines that can securely manage Protected Health Information (PHI). To be truly effective, they must also be designed for interoperability with existing health software like electronic medical record platforms. When it comes to remote monitoring scenarios, privacy, security, and trusted data exchanges are must-haves. Microsoft is actively investing in FHIR-based health technology like the Azure IoT Connector for FHIR to ensure health customers have an ecosystem they trust.

FHIR to fuel the Internet of Medical Things

FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is now the interoperability standard for secure and private exchange of health data. FHIR began as an open source framework for clinical data, but it’s growing adoption makes it an ideal technology to bring together data from the growing “Internet of Medical Things” (IoMT) and expand healthcare in remote monitoring scenarios.

Today remote data capture often requires device-specific platforms, making it difficult to scale when new processes are added or if patients use multiple devices. Developers have to build their own secure pipelines from scratch. With the Azure IoT Connector for FHIR available as a feature on Microsoft’s cloud-based FHIR service, it’s now quick and easy for health developers to set up an ingestion pipeline, designed for security to manage PHI from IoT devices. The Azure IoT Connector for FHIR focuses on biometric data at the ingestion layer, which means it can connect at the device-to-cloud or cloud-to-cloud workstreams. Health data can be sent to Event Hub, Azure IoT Hub, or Azure IoT Central, and is converted to FHIR resources, which enables care teams to view patient data captured from IoT devices in context with clinical records in FHIR.

The key features of the Azure IoT Connector for FHIR include:

  • Conversion of biometric data (such as blood glucose, heart rate, or pulse ox) from connected devices into FHIR resources.
  • Scalability and real-time data processing.
  • Seamless integration with Azure IoT solutions and Azure Stream Analytics.
  • Role-based Access Control (RBAC) allows for managing access to device data at scale in Azure API for FHIR.
  • Audit log tracking for data flow.
  • Helps with compliance in the cloud: ISO 27001:2013 certified, supports HIPAA and GDPR, and built on the HITRUST certified Azure platform.

Humana’s Conviva Care Centers transform care for chronic conditions with IoT and FHIR

Conviva Care Centers, Humana’s senior-focused primary care subsidiary, will be using the Azure IoT Connector for FHIR this fall as Humana accelerates remote monitoring programs for patients living with chronic conditions. Congestive heart failure patients who monitor their weight and blood pressure at home will be able to use a new platform that enables easy sharing of data with their care team. Data from in-home devices, like scales and blood pressure cuffs, can be transferred via Azure IoT Connector for FHIR, providing doctors and nurses real-time data managed in a highly secure and private pipeline and allowing for proactive virtual touchpoints. Humana’s flexible remote monitoring platform will not only ensure patients have the support they need between clinic visits, but will also accelerate the future of user-centric care.

Sensoria Health’s Motus Smart—powered by Sensoria—is the new gold standard for enabling diabetes rehabilitation with remote monitoring

Motus Smart, powered by Sensoria, is a cutting-edge device used to provide remote patient monitoring quantified patient adherence and activity data to manage patients with diabetic foot ulcers and reduce amputation risk. Sensoria was able to deploy the Azure IoT Connector for FHIR to enable highly secure data exchange from the Motus device to patients, their doctors, and others within their circle of care. Clinicians at the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center are using enterprise-class applications to see real-time data, proactively reach out to patients, and address any issues that might be impeding proper treatment.

Centene connected health data platform helps manage chronic diseases

Centene is using Azure IoT Connector for FHIR in an effort to better manage the ever-expanding personal bio-metric data resulting from the proliferation of wearables and other medical devices. The company is leveraging the connector to explore the use of near-real-time monitoring and alerting as part of its overall priority on improving the health of its members, enabling them to take better care of themselves, and supporting its care management staff with actionable insights to improve the health of the communities Centene serves. In the future, Centene intends to use the connector to monitor and manage chronic conditions such as congestive heart failure, diabetes, and high-blood pressure. By leveraging Microsoft’s scalable, open platforms, Centene can make further progress toward improving outcomes for Centene Health Plan members.
