Knowledge is Power

Each unit in Wargroove is unique, with unique stats, abilities, and critical hit conditions. Make sure you brush up on your unit knowledge by making good use of the tile info and codex. You can access the codex in the game directly from the tile info screen.

Critical Hits Are King

Critical hits are a very unique part of battles in Wargroove. Each unit has a critical hit condition that boosts their damage in a major way! Make sure you’re always thinking about the best way to set up critical hits and you’ll overpower even the strongest battalions.

Get into the Groove

Each Commander has access to an incredibly powerful Groove ability. These abilities are often powerful enough to turn the tide of battle if used correctly. Make sure you’re building your Groove quickly by finishing off units with the Commander and look for the optimum moment to unleash your Groove!

Finding Balance

Your Commander is both your most powerful unit and your biggest weakspot. Don’t be afraid to use your Commander aggressively to advance and build up Groove meter quickly. Make sure the Commander always has an escape route available and be careful not to overextend.

Salt and Sanctuary and the Salt That Nearly Was

At long last, Salt and Sanctuary is coming to Xbox One! Our 2D souls-like of deadly monsters, labyrinthine dungeons, and shattered heroes may be our studio’s fourth big game, but it’s our first title to grace Xbox One.

Over a decade ago, when the studio was just me, I was lucky enough to get my big break when I was awarded a publishing contract to bring The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai to Xbox Live Arcade. Since then, Ska Studios has doubled in size! Over the next 6 years, we’d release The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile, Charlie Murder, I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES 1N IT!!!1, ZP2KX, and who knows what else on Xbox 360; sometimes on XBLA, sometimes on XBLIG.

Salt and Sanctuary

Salt and Sanctuary

And today, the great folks at Blitworks have done a fine job of bringing the game in all its gloomy glory to Xbox One. But now that we’ve returned at last to Xbox, I thought I’d share a tale of the game Salt and Sanctuary might have been.

I started writing what would become Salt and Sanctuary as far back as 2012, while finishing up Charlie Murder, which we would launch on Xbox 360 in 2013. At some point I envisioned it as a procedurally generated roguelike, and as I look at my codebase now, I see the game still has some commented-out code and some excluded classes to enable that functionality (no one’s ever accused me of being a tidy programmer). One idea that I was considering was for the game’s protagonists to be drawn from a procedurally generated shipwrecked crew of a Nordic-style viking longship exploring the procedurally generated world. Your crew might have 2 mages, 3 archers, 1 fighter, and so on; how would you tackle the world?

Salt and Sanctuary

Salt and Sanctuary

I ended up totally walking away from procedural generation. The expression I like to talk myself out of the appeal of limitless procedural generation is, “when everything is random, nothing is.” We’re pattern recognizing mammals, and without realizing it, we’re probably as good at cataloguing procedural generation algorithms as we are at remembering the layout of a fixed map. And the procedural crew idea was problematic: does the crew replenish, or is it a fixed pool to keep the tension high? Would it be overly frustrating to arrive at the end with only the “worst” crew available? How do you solve the narrative problem of sending out the crew one by one like a horror movie trope?

This was around when our Dark Souls obsession flew into full swing. I had been a huge fan of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but like many gamers, I had begun to notice a trend in the ensuing years toward tutorials, checkpoints, objective markers; form over function, all of it focus tested into palatable mush. And when Dark Souls came out, I’ll admit I didn’t “get it” initially. But it clicked in time: the solitude, the agency, the layers of depth concealed by obscurity, the relentless difficulty — these were things once integral to games, driven away by years of simplification in the name of minimizing frustration. Minimizing frustration is a good thing! But at some point, it became doctrine. Dark Souls bucked the trend, and gamers rejoiced.

Salt and Sanctuary

Salt and Sanctuary

I hadn’t been won over by the procedural prototype yet, and I had begun to wonder, “would a Dark Souls style game work in 2D?” And thus, the procedural stuff was scrapped, and a big new experiment commenced! The combat took after The Dishwasher (no one ever comments on this!), but with a more deliberate pace. The loot system from Charlie Murder was heavily adapted. Some more ambitious systems were scrapped, like a weapon upgrade system that would unlock super moves at higher tiers. The sanctuary system was probably more ambitious than its final form, but I’m still really happy with it: I like populating my cozy little hubs!

I know it’s a cliché way to close out, but I really did have a blast making Salt and Sanctuary. If this is your first time playing it, I only hope enjoy it half as much as I did making it. The Salt that Nearly Was may have been relegated to the recycling bin of game development history, but if you’d like to turn my Viking longship idea into reality, go for it!

Salt and Sanctuary is available now for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. Click here for purchase details.

OpTic Gaming Makes Dramatic Run to Take Home Another Title

With a massive player pool, thousands of rabid cheering fans and some of the best Gears Esports gameplay ever, the Gears Pro Circuit Mexico City Open went down as a highlight for both players and fans alike.

OpTic Gaming proved their championship mettle with a dramatic run that ended with taking down Denial Esports in a dominating fashion to claim the $200,000 prize pool. This is the second time OpTic Gaming has come back from the “losers” bracket to steal the victory – once again showing why they are easily the most dominant force in Gears Esports history.

Play Apex Legends, a Free-to-Play Battle Royale from the Makers of Titanfall 2

Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale game where legendary competitors fight for glory, fame, and fortune on the fringes of the Frontier. To win in the Apex Games you’ll need to stay sharp, use your wits, and keep your friends close. But victory also favors the prepared, and a few helpful tips in your pocket can be the difference between defeat and sweet, sweet triumph.

Check out these critical tips and tricks to help you kickstart your career in the Apex Games.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends

Choose the Legend Who Matches Your Playstyle

In the Apex Arena, all competitors are equals, and the Legends are evenly matched in terms of strength, speed, and firepower. It’s their abilities that set them apart, so you’ll want to pick the Legend that matches your preferred playstyle and complements your squad.

Want to be the shield between your team and opponents? Jump into the arena as the hearty Gibraltar. How about helping your squad travel long distances to take your enemies by surprise? Pathfinder, with his trusty grappling hook, is your perfect pick. Figure out what role you like to play and try different Legends to see which fits you best.

Stay Close to Your Squad

Squadplay is critical to success in Apex Legends, where you jump into the arena with two teammates at your side. Working together, you can keep each other safe and outplay your opponents by combining your abilities. A well-placed Dimensional Rift by Wraith, for example, can put her team right on top of unsuspecting opponents, while Caustic can protect teammates by using Nox gas to drive away enemies.

Try to strike out on your own, and you’ll be up against other teams who can easily overwhelm you. Stick close to your squad, and you’ll have a greater chance at success.

Use Smart Comms to Keep in Touch with Your Teammates

You can give your teammates critical information – and vice versa – through an in-game system that lets you ping useful items and locations on their screens.

You can pinpoint the position of gear pieces (and what they are), highlight threats, and tell your teammates which direction you’re going before you’ve even plugged in a microphone. Use this to your advantage to make sure your teammates see what you see and always have the latest intel.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends

Get Familiar with the Arena

Kings Canyon – the map where all Apex Matches take place – is a deadly playground full of abandoned military installations and encroaching nature. Learning how to maneuver, where the hotspots of activity are, and where to find the best loot are all important nuggets of knowledge.

The arena is surrounded by a giant Ring that shrinks at regular intervals throughout the match, and you’ll receive damage every second you spend outside its perimeter. Knowing your surroundings will help you make decisions faster and maneuver more effectively to avoid getting stuck outside it.

Go for the Good Stuff, But Be Careful

Different sections of the map spawn different tiers of loot – the higher your weapon or armor piece’s tier, the stronger it is. Some locations on the map are consistently full of high-tier loot, which means everyone will want to get to these spots first. The true motherlode comes packed inside dropships that land at random spots on the map, rewarding anyone who can claim them with the most powerful loot in the game.

You start each match with no weapons or armor, so you and your squad will have to decide if these high-tier caches are worth the risk each time you play. As for where they are? We’ll let you figure that out on your own.

Revive and Respawn Your Teammates

After your health is depleted, you’ll go into a downed state where you’re still alive, but slow and in need of medical attention. If you die before your teammates can help, they have one last shot to save you.

Every Legend carries a Legend Banner that they drop when they die. Only their teammates can pick these up, and taking one to a Respawn Beacon will bring that Legend back to life. Pulling off a successful resurrection can bring a team back from the brink of defeat, so don’t let the opportunity slip by.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends

Use Jump Towers, Hot Zones, and Other Features to Your Advantage

Kings Canyon is full of semi-permanent map objects you can use to get a leg up on your opponents. Jump Towers allow you to fly into the air and skydive back down to the ground. Hot Zones give you access to higher-tier loot on a random portion of the map if you can get there first. Respawn Beacons can bring downed teammates back to life.

Whether you use them to get out of a hairy situation or take your enemies by surprise, learning how to use these features adds another layer to your team’s strategy. That’s as good as another gun in your arsenal.

Don’t Let Anything Go to Waste

Body armor, weapon attachments, and other helpful pieces of gear are all hidden across the arena for you to grab. The inventory system will automatically tell you if a weapon or piece of gear is better than what you already have and keep you from grabbing lower-tier loot. That way, you won’t risk snatching something you can’t use in a panic.

You and your teammates can help each other by calling out item locations as you spot them. The tagging system also notes an item’s rarity level, so you can snag a higher-level piece of gear that you might’ve missed otherwise. Also make sure to loot fallen enemies – they’ll drop a cache when you take them out, and often have some of the best loot. Always keep an eye out, because you never know when a single piece of armor is going to save you in the end.

Play Apex Legends for free now on Xbox One and we’ll see you in the arena!

Rezone, Recycle, and Rebuild in Cities: Skylines – Green Cities Available Now on Xbox One

Cities: Skylines is a modern take on a classic city builder, allowing you to express your creativity and to optimize the city of your dreams. Up until now, the game has had several different expansions that add to various gameplay elements such as nightlife, winter environments, disasters and traffic. Our latest addition to our existing catalogue of expansions is Cities: Skylines – Green Cities.

Cities Skylines - Green Cities

Cities Skylines - Green Cities

Green Cities is all about switching your city over to a more environment friendly focus with new types of zoning specialization. These include residential and office specializations such as self-sufficient buildings and IT clusters, which is a first for the game. There is also a new commercial specialization focused on organic and local produce. These different specializations help you as a player shift your city to a greener energy profile while at the same time changing up the look of your skyline.

Cities Skylines - Green Cities

Cities Skylines - Green Cities

The challenge in Green Cities arises in managing things like lower tax revenue or higher electricity consumption from some specializations as you strive toward a fully green city or part of a city. In conjunction with these new specializations there are also new alternate city services such as recycling, healthcare or bio-fuel buses.

Cities Skylines - Green Cities

Cities Skylines - Green Cities

You also have new policies to help regulate your new green endeavors, such as plastic recycling and industrial waste filtering, as well as banning combustion engine cars in favor of the new electric ones introduced for free with Green Cities. Electric cars come with benefits to the noise pollution which has also been reworked to track individual noise footprint per car, meaning encouraging electric cars can have a significant effect on the noise levels in your city.

Cities Skylines - Green Cities

Cities Skylines - Green Cities

Added to this are new monuments, unique buildings, maps, scenarios and chirpers, to go with numerous free updates including electric cars, trees, parks, a Mars themed radio station and a rocket launcher site. This is not counting a bunch of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. We hope that you will enjoy Green Cities and all of its new and cool features!

Cities: Skylines – Green Cities expansion is available now for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. It requires a full version of Cities: Skylines Xbox One Edition. Click here for purchase details
