FromSoftware’s Legendary Mech Game Metal Wolf Chaos Coming to Xbox One August 6

FromSoftware are known as titans of modern game development with some of the biggest, most influential releases over the past decade. Like most developers, they began as a smaller studio and much of their earlier work is unfamiliar to the latest generation of gamers. Once such project is Metal Wolf Chaos, an eccentric mech action game released in 2004 for the original Xbox that was never available outside of FromSoftware’s home country of Japan.

Set in a near-future America, the Vice President of the United States Richard Hawk has staged a coup against President Michael Wilson and both wield their own heavily armed mechs in a battle for the country. Players will step into the executive branch shoes of President Wilson and battle across the United States against the insurgent forces led by VP Hawk. The action is as wild as the game is irreverent with outlandish quips from both Rivals and a startlingly constant reminder of your objectives from the president’s handler Jody.

Metal Wolf Chaos had always been something of legend to gamers and FromSoftware fans outside of Japan. A peculiarity from a stories developer that was hard to play due to limited availability and enormously high prices to import, Metal Wolf Chaos was mostly experienced through online videos and a smattering of screenshots from marketing promotions in Japan. Our team at Devolver Digital saw an opportunity to bring this special part of FromSoftware’s history to the rest of the world and spent two years pleading with our friends there to let us and developer General Arcade port it to modern platforms.

And then they agreed! General Arcade and FromSoftware have spent nearly two years reworking code, assets, and artwork from a 2004 Xbox game to finally bring it to the rest of the world via Xbox One. Metal Wolf Chaos XD is less of a remaster and more of a re-release of this legendary game – keeping the heart and soul (and original voiceover) intact while making sure the presentation is in 16:9 aspect ratio, 1080p, and 4K resolution (on Xbox One X), and refined controls for the Xbox One gamepad. Graphics, effects, and other visual tweaks have been made to work well on modern architecture but the game itself is a faithful restoration of one or FromSoftware’s most interesting releases.

Our combined teams can’t wait for you to enjoy Metal Wolf Chaos XD on Xbox One on August 6!

Metal Wolf Chaos XD is available for pre-order today for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. Click here for additional pre-order details.

Read the Final Chapter of The Sinking City’s Hero Origin Story

Hi everyone! Last week we shared part one of The Sinking City hero origin story and we heard you liked it. If you missed it, you can still read it here.

In The Sinking City, you play as Charles Reed, a 1920s private investigator tortured by his past and seeking to salvation while exploring a strange flooded city. We finally could make sense of Charles’s scattered notes, so without further ado, please enjoy the second part of our The Sinking City short origin story!

Journal of Charles W. Reed, 1918

Chapter Two

It happened again last night. I woke up next to this flooded narrow hole in the ground, a hundred meters away from the USS Cyclops debris… and the decaying bodies of my friends. Judging by the dirt under my nails, I tried to dig my way into it. What’s so important down there, I wonder?

That hole was the first thing I saw after I was washed ashore this god-forsaken island. I think it’s been two weeks, and I haven’t seen a single soul since then, well, living soul anyway. I buried some of my crewmates, the ones I managed to carry to their improvised graves anyway… I haven’t eaten anything aside from the rotten shellfish I found on the seashore when I woke up. I can barely move, but strangely enough, it seems like I magically gain a lot of strength at night if I’m able to sleepwalk all the way across the island from my comfy cave to that stinking pit.

That hole is not the only foul thing here. This whole place smells like death, there’s something in the air that I cannot escape. I carry the gun I found on one of the bodies, but even though there are bullets in the clip, I have no use for it. It’s not like I can go hunting for food. The whole place is dead.

The SInking City

The SInking City

It’s been three more days. I’m pretty desperate. Have to do something, because otherwise I’ll just starve to death. I’m going in that hole. What’s the point of being a Navy diver if I can’t dive in a hole in the ground?

I crawled into the pit. The water was lukewarm and thick like blood or oil. I held my breath and dived, trying to push my body down as fast as I could. Who knows how deep this is, but I don’t think I’ll die here. I survived the shipwreck, ended up on this island, with this hole calling out to my sleeping self. It’s all happening for a reason, and I doubt that reason is for me to drown in this cesspool. Wouldn’t be poetic.

When I finally reached the bottom, I saw a glimpse of light ahead. I rushed toward it, and emerged into what seemed to be an underground cave. Trying to catch my breath, I looked around. Something caught my attention, the same unnatural ruins that I saw in my dreams on the Cyclops. Now that I can see them clearly, they looks like some sort of a lair, with two diagonal rocks facing each other. I want to touch them.

Agonizing pain shot through my palm the moment I land it on one of the rocks. They lit up, emitting strange glowing into the air, yellowish marks started to appear on them. They seemed like a gate to another dimension, it was like someone or something was about to come through it. I looked up and suddenly saw the skies – was I not in a cave this whole time?

I caught a glimpse of a slimy black worm burrowing into my hand. I tried to shake it off, but it was gone in a moment. Sudden clarity came upon me, I was on my knees staring at the gates, finally I saw an enormous shadow in it… No, there was nothing.

The SInking City

The SInking City

“Wake him up!” a voice penetrated the silence, their hands were shaking my restless body. When I opened my eyes I saw a few men standing around me, military, judging by their uniforms. When they were carrying me to their boat, I looked around. I saw a dark silhouette, pointing in the direction of the flooded hole. I knew I was the only one who saw it. “It’s okay”, I thought. “I know what I saw. I know there’s something out there, and I will find it”.

“Sir”, I said and one of the soldiers looked at me. “Get the bodies on the beach, please! Their families must learn what happened to them”.

“Bodies?” he asked looking puzzled.

“Bodies” I repeated suddenly becoming annoyed. “You must have seen the debris of my ship, and the rotting corpses too. Ring a bell?”

“Look, pal, I have no idea what you are on about. There’s no bodies here, no debris, no nothing. You seeing things or something?”

The end. Well, the end of that story, which marks the beginning of The Sinking City, our adventure and investigation game inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Play as Charles W. Reed, private investigator, to uncover the truth of what possesses the half-submerged city of Oakmont, right now on Xbox One!

The Sinking City is available now on the Microsoft Store for Xbox One. Click here for purchase details.

Welcome to Shadow Fencer Theatre, Available Now on Xbox One

“Hey, you look like you’re into puppets!”

This is our icebreaker of choice when showing our game Shadow Fencer Theatre at conventions. The typical responses are along the lines of “What a weird thing to say” or “What about my face says that?” or just straight up laughter, but it often jolts people out of autopilot and brings them into to our booth.

It sounds odd, sure… but hey, you’re still reading this! At this point we would say something like: “Shadow Fencer Theatre is our competitive awkward physics sword-fighting game set in the world of shadow puppets! Why don’t you jump in and try it out?”

Shadow Fencer Theater

Shadow Fencer Theater

Despite playing with shadows, there is quite a bit of depth to the fighting in Shadow Fencer Theatre. Your left joystick controls the hand holding your shadow puppet and the right joystick swings the puppet’s floppy fencing arm. The player that can best control their wiggling puppet and deliver a lethal hit wins that take. The first puppeteer to win by two takes wins the match and ends the scene. You can also choose to throw your sword to win a take, but you better be confident, because once you do, there are no takebacks.  When you realize you are not the grandmaster puppeteer you thought you were and lose your weapon, you can still get down to fisticuffs, but it’s not going to be easy.

Every character has the same reach from their hitbox to sword point, putting each character on a level playing ground. What makes every character unique are the variations between joints, limb lengths, and the size of their weapons. This gives advantages and disadvantages to each puppet and allows for a unique playstyle depending on who you select.

Long swords have more stability to the swing and provide a larger area to hit with. Throw it and miss however, suddenly your baby arms aren’t doing much to protect you. Just ask our city-destroying kaiju, Lizilla. If she loses her limousine sword, her tiny T-Rex-like arms leave her vulnerable. Conversely, our Gorilla character’s banana sword may be wobbly to swing, but after you throw it, your reach is still crazy long.

Shadow Fencer Theater

Shadow Fencer Theater

You know what? Because we like you, here’s a pro tip. If you need a little room to breathe when the swordplay gets intense, jab the puppeteer’s hand to cause your opponent to whimper and jerk backwards. Each puppeteer finds their own techniques for managing the awkward physics of our characters, so what will yours be?

If puppets attacking you wasn’t enough, the environment is out to get you as well. Each stage has unique elements that can affect the fight. Scenery, such as bats, arrows, tumbleweeds, and helicopters can get in the way of sword swings.  Large set pieces can help you hide from your opponent to get a cheeky sword throw in. Most importantly, pro tip #2, don’t fall off the boat!

Shadow Fencer Theatre is created by ShuddaHaddaLottaFun, a two-person dev team from the Midwest, and we are so excited to bring our premiere title to Xbox One. We met in college, working on sketch comedy rather than going to class, and then at some point in time we were like, “How about video games?” And now we do that.

Shadow Fencer Theater

Shadow Fencer Theater

We started out slow, learning the ropes by doing game jams. Then after many attempts, we made a game that people really liked.  Now just a little over two years later, Shadow Fencer Theatre went from a small jam game to a full featured game with a ton of characters, multiple game modes, and crazy awkward mini-games.

We are so excited to be finally launching our game on Xbox One, and we can’t wait for you to get out there and start poking each other. Poke your friends. Poke your classmates. Poke yourself. Best of luck puppeteers, the theater is calling for you, so go out and put on a great show!

Shadow Fencer Theatre is available now for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. Click here for purchase details.

Your First Bite of The Delicious Last Course with an Update from Studio MDHR on Cuphead DLC

Hello, old friends and new!

First and foremost, we wanted to thank the wonderful Xbox community for the kind words about our recent Free Content Update. From those who had been itching to play as Mugman, to players who were able to visit the Inkwell Isles for the first time in a new language, we’ve received a whole new wave of support for our little animated adventure. We really wouldn’t be able to do what we love without you folks! On that note, we know fans have been hungering for more info about our upcoming Cuphead DLC.

While we initially announced a 2019 release date for the Delicious Last Course expansion, our highest priority is making sure this new adventure meets the meticulous level of care and quality we always strive for. We want to be absolutely certain that this next adventure feels at home in the world of Cuphead and is full of moments that surprise and delight players. Furthermore, the development of the original game taught us a great deal about the importance of making things in a way that’s healthy and sustainable for our team.

With that in mind, we’re taking a page out of Chef Saltbaker’s book, and spending the necessary time to get the recipe just right – this means that we’ll be moving the release of The Delicious Last Course to 2020. This wasn’t an easy decision to make, but we’re confident it’s one that will result in a higher quality experience that’s all the sweeter when it does arrive.

Rest assured, we remain hard at work on this new isle, which will bring a whole bevy of screen-filling bosses, exciting weapons & charms to wallop with, and of course, a brand-new playable character…the lovely Ms. Chalice!

Cuphead

Cuphead

Not only will Ms. Chalice have a distinct play style and unique abilities – like double-jump! – but she’ll be playable across every isle, allowing you to re-experience the original Cuphead in a completely fresh way. We’ve learned so much about animation and really honed our technique during the development of Cuphead, so expect some particularly wacky and wild moments this time around! As well as a few surprises we aren’t prepared to talk about just yet.

So, while the wait for The Delicious Last Course is set to be a little longer than expected, just know that we’re pushing to ensure the end result is cooked to perfection. And in the meantime, we hope this amuse bouche teaser will whet your appetite for the feast to come next year!

Psychological Investigative Thriller Dry Drowning to Hit Xbox One in 2020

A new game from a brand-new publisher, pushing new boundaries with an old genre, and finding home on an especially well established platform: It’s no exaggeration to say it’s a genuine honour for us here at Studio V – the aforementioned fresh-faced publisher in your midst – to present our latest project on the pages of Xbox Wire. For all fans of narrative focused thrillers, say hello to Dry Drowning.

Taking place in the fictional north European city of Nova Polemos, we like to describe Dry Drowning as a ‘psychological investigative visual novel’ set in 2066. By following the story of Mordred Foley – an unscrupulous private detective haunted by his dark past – you will be immersed in a series of macabre serial killings inspired by ancient Greek myths.

Dry Drowning

Dry Drowning

Alongside companion Hera Kairis, it’ll be your task to unearth the truth in a hostile world seemingly out to set you back at every turn. The only tools in your arsenal are Foley’s knack for piecing together clues and slicing through people’s lies, with Dry Drowning drawing riddles aplenty and minigames laced with mystery into view along the way. It all plays out in what’s an intentionally dark and dystopian view of the near future, with play layered throughout with a dynamic soundtrack featuring more than 50 tracks and an admittedly peculiar and (in our view) awesome art style.

A story well told

This is no run-of-the-mill adventure, however. With Dry Drowning we have set out with the express aim of rejuvenating the visual novel genre, telling an extremely compelling and mature story filled with heavy moral choices and more than 150 story branches and three distinctly different endings. In short, we want this to be a game shaped by you, the player.

Tracking down the assassin brings with it some rather personal challenges for Foley, whose sense of morality is tested over and over again. It’s a setup we think will force you, the player, to consider some rather tricky questions of your own: Could you use your friends as bait to catch the crazed killer, for example? Or would you tamper with a crime scene in order to suit your investigation and ensure justice prevails, or leave things as they are and risk the culprit never being caught?

Dry Drowning

Dry Drowning

The choices don’t stop there, however. In the opening hours of the game, Dry Drowning hands you the opportunity to take down an entire corrupt political class, naturally having a massive impact on the world around you in play. Doing so means losing some characters right from the get go, while others may never turn up further down the line. Indeed, this decision fundamentally alters entire chapters. It can even make solving the case can be easier or harder, all depending on some specific actions.

Art, music and inspiration

As part of this drive to place the story front and centre in Dry Drowning, we also decided to mix Orwell’s dystopian vision of the future with the kind of atmosphere more akin to thriller movies and TV series, such as “Se7en” and “True Detective.” Games have naturally been an inspiration as well, with narrative-led titles like L.A. Noire serving as obvious ports of call, as well as games that employ a system of branching paths dependent on the choices made by you, like Life Is Strange or Telltale’s enviable line-up.

It’s a combination of influences that, along with the game’s artwork, soundtrack and gameplay, creates an oppressive setting for a society not so different from the one we’re living in right now. Just as in real life, racism, sexism, immigration, and political extremism all have a role to play in the world of Dry Drowning. In order to survive in this climate and, of course, solve the case, you’ll have to gather clues and find more about the characters that are involved. Some of them may lie, and you’ll know precisely who they are thanks to the game’s ‘Living Nightmare’ system.

Dry Drowning

Dry Drowning

For some mysterious reason (later revealed to you in play), Foley is able to tell if someone is lying to him by simply looking at their face. A mask will entirely shroud their features when the lie is told. Presenting clues, however, will rip that shroud from their face, though making mistakes may lead you to a premature end…

It’s this intense and almost infinite sense of edginess that helps ensure each and every chapter, each and every moment of Dry Drowning leaves you both uneasy and eager in equal measure. That’s all we can reveal right now but, rest assured, we can’t wait to show you more. Get ready to dive into the darkness of Dry Drowning on Xbox One in 2020.
