Celebrating the Minecraft Community at MINECON Live

Last month, more than 112 million people played Minecraft around the world. The size and passion of the Minecraft community continues to amaze us, and more importantly, inspires us to give players new and interesting ways to play the game that brings us all together. Each year at MINECON Live, we look forward to giving the community a peek into what’s new, what’s happening behind the scenes, and what’s to come in the months ahead.

Updates on Minecraft Earth

Some of what we shared today is about Minecraft Earth – a free-to-play mobile game that blends state-of-the-art technology with a new version of Minecraft built on the Bedrock engine. It’s a game that first got its inspiration from the Minecraft HoloLens demo at E3 in 2015 and has grown into one of the world’s first true augmented reality experiences on mobile.

Minecraft Earth has been in closed beta in five cities over the summer, and community feedback from the closed beta has helped us iterate on the game, getting us closer to being ready to release to a wider audience – which starts very soon. Similar to Minecraft, we want to make Minecraft Earth better over time, so we’re going to start releasing the game in Early Access in October and adding more countries each week until we’re worldwide by the end of the year.

Pre-registration for the Early Access version of Minecraft Earth is live for Android users around the world – you can sign up right here – and everyone should stay tuned to Minecraft.net/Earth for further updates.

The Early Access version of the game will bring new features that players in the closed beta have yet to play, including new mob variants, crafting and smelting, and our take on social multiplayer experiences called Adventures. Adventures are small slices of Minecraft worlds that you play in augmented reality in life size. For example, your sidewalk becomes a mine and there could be diamonds under your feet, or your local park may have Minecraft trees where skeletons lurk and you can fight them, dig down into the ground and discover an abandoned mine with treasures. But don’t go at it alone – some of those Adventures can include hostile mobs!

Adventures and so many other parts of Minecraft Earth rely on two critical Microsoft technologies. Azure PlayFab’s dedicated servers allow Minecraft Earth’s multiplayer gameplay to scale worldwide and is the power behind hosting both Buildplates and Adventures on behalf of players.

Azure Spatial Anchors (ASA) is an Azure Mixed Reality developer service that enables sharing and persistence of AR content. When you set off to your local park and find an abandoned mine with treasures, Minecraft Earth is using the ASA service to help guide different players to the same Adventure placement. Without any need for QR scanning, ASA helps the Adventure get magically placed and aligned correctly for all players at that location.

As we begin to roll the game out globally, we’re prioritizing player safety to make Minecraft Earth an enjoyable and welcoming experience for everyone. Players, parents and guardians will be able to use Xbox Live Account Management to adjust safety and privacy settings and a reporting system will allow players to report concerns like unsafe locations in-game and on our website. We’ll also have a moderation team available to manage and respond to reports. It’s important to us that all players feel safe and can contribute to a positive and inclusive Minecraft Earth community.

Additional MINECON Live News

Beyond Minecraft Earth, there’s so much more that we talked about today during MINECON Live. Here are just some of those amazing things:

  • We introduced our next major game update for Minecraft called the Nether Update, which will add new biomes, mobs, structures, blocks and visual effects to the Nether to enhance its unique and scary atmosphere. We also showed off the new Target block which will act as a projectile hit-detector, two new biomes – the Soulsand Valley and Netherwart Forest, and the all-new Piglin Beasts and Piglin mobs. The Piglins introduce a new civilization to the Minecraft universe!
  • Minecraft Dungeons is another new Minecraft experience that we’re incredibly excited to bring to our players next year. During MINECON Live, we premiered the opening cinematic trailer and demonstrated how local co-op gameplay works with friends. Plus, we reminded players that they can sign up for a chance to play the game early at Minecraft.net/Dungeons.
  • We’re also bringing Bees and Beehives to the game. The Minecraft bees will help pollinate crops and flowers, and during MINECON Live we introduced the Honey Block that has many fun new mechanics like slowing down movement with its sticky texture. The bees will arrive to both Bedrock and Java before the holidays.
  • Character Creator is a new, easy-to-use system to help players make a custom character in Minecraft. More than 100 features, including all hair, eyes, mouths, skin textures, facial hair, and body sizes will be available for free and there will also be a range of custom accessories, created by the Minecraft team, available for purchase. And yes, even capes will be coming to Bedrock for the first time, with a free Founder’s Cape available when Character Creator launches later this year! Plus, Character Creator will be available in the main game as well as Minecraft Earth and characters will sync between both games!
  • Coming soon, Realms Plus is a new monthly subscription that represents an evolution from the typical Realms that players know and love today. With Realms Plus, just like before, players will have access to a 10-player Realm where you can invite all your friends to play with you, at no cost to them. But now, players will receive more than 50 pieces of content from the Minecraft Marketplace from more than 30 participating Minecraft Marketplace Partners at no extra cost, with new Marketplace content added each month.
  • Minecraft: Builders & Biomes from Ravensburger is a new board game that brings Minecraft from screen to table. Developed in collaboration with Mojang, Minecraft: Builders & Biomes is the first Minecraft strategy board game ever created. It recreates the digital game in a shared, in-person experience complete with mobs to fight and a real block of resource cubes to mine. The game will be available in Europe starting in October and in the United States starting in November.
  • Finally, we’re excited to share that next year will be the return of a physical MINECON experience, called Minecraft Festival, a three-day celebration that will feature interactive exhibits, inclusive gameplay, tournaments, exclusive merchandise and meet-and-greets with creators and Mojang developers, alongside our digital global broadcast. You can sign up for more information at minecraftfestival.com.

We want to thank you all for being a part of the amazing Minecraft community. We wouldn’t be where we are without you all today and we’re so glad to be able to celebrate with each and every one of you at MINECON Live.

3 Key Tips to Help You Deal with Allies and Enemies in Code Vein

Prepare to fight to survive in the action RPG Code Vein! After a mysterious disaster destroys the world as we know it, you and the remaining survivors – Revenants – must find a way to stay alive in a land filled with ferocious monsters known as the Lost. To persevere in this harsh world, you can partner with a fellow Revenant to increase your collective strength in battle with coordinated attacks and support.

For those of you who are curious about how to deal with different friends and foes in your adventure, here are a few pointers to help you navigate the world of Code Vein.

Code Vein

Code Vein

It’s All About Those Status Symbols

When taking on the Lost, often the initial damage they can inflict is only part of the story. Some enemies can inflict various status attacks that can hinder you on your path to victory. These can include poisoning, slow, and leak (which slowly reduces your Ichor count) just to name a few.

While playing, keep a close eye on whether a status has been inflicted by checking the lower portion of the screen. This location will enumerate all your character’s status changes, with positive buffs appearing in blue and negative changes appearing in red. In addition, you can see the status changes for your partner beneath their icon.

Code Vein

Code Vein

Friends to the End

Having a buddy available to resurrect you in the heat of battle can be the difference in victory or defeat. It may be wise to always try to hold at least two Ichor so you can cast a revive gift on your partner, ensuring that they will be around for a chance to “rez” you back.

Getting to Know You

When at your Home Base, you might notice that you can give presents to NPCs in exchange for items that they hold. Though you can give anyone anything, specific items will garner you more points for trading.

Code Vein

Code Vein

Pay close attention to their conversations, items they may send you, and moments in their unlocked memories. This may give you a clue to what items they have a strong affinity for. This can be crucial is you want to get some rare crafting materials or other special items they may be willing to part with.

Don’t forget to use these three helpful tips to help you find your way to victory on your journey.

Code Vein is available now for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. Click here for purchase details.

Inside Xbox News Recap, September 2019

Today, on our September episode of Inside Xbox, we got a look at the upcoming single-player sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds, the latest details on the first public test for Project xCloud, an exclusive interview with Jon Bernthal on Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and the scoop on tickets for X019, coming to London November 14.

We told it to you here first: Grapeshot Games’ Atlas is coming to Xbox Game Preview on October 8! This episode of Inside Xbox also featured DayZ, Hitman 2, Afterparty, Code Vein, Felix the Reaper, Children of Morta, the next round of Xbox Game Pass for PC titles and more. For a full recap, read on below or watch the replay of Inside Xbox episode above when the VOD is available.

Project xCloud Preview

Project xCloud is working to empower more choice to play where and when you want. No more waiting for downloads or updates because of streaming directly from the cloud. October signals the start of the first phase of technical preview for US/UK/KR. We’re only starting as an invite-only preview with a limited number of spots available for mid-October but will add more people to the preview throughout the year as well as add more games. Go to Xbox.com/gamestreaming to learn more about our vision and register for the preview. For full details, check out the Xbox Wire post about the Project xCloud Preview.

Atlas Coming to Xbox Game Preview

Sail the globe and stake your claim to become a legendary pirate. That’s the mantra for Atlas, one of gaming’s largest open worlds where players embark on a grand adventure alongside thousands of other players. In today’s episode of Inside Xbox, Lead Game Designer Erik Waananen shared how you can help Atlas become the ultimate pirate experience when it comes to Xbox Game Preview on Xbox One starting October 8 with cross-play between Xbox One and Steam.

The roadmap for development will come in phases, starting with life improvements, bug fixes, performance increases, and then moving onto sea, ship, and sailing updates. Future updates will also add Xbox Play Anywhere support with Windows 10 PC, along with keyboard and mouse support for Xbox One and full game parity between Xbox and PC. Stay tuned to Xbox Wire for future news and updates about Atlas.

Xbox Game Pass for PC

On today’s Inside Xbox we found out about four new titles coming soon to Xbox Game Pass for PC (Beta):

  • DiRT Rally 2.0
  • Bad North
  • Cities Skylines
  • Saints Row IV: Re-Elected

Read the standalone article here for complete details on these titles and their availability on Xbox Game Pass for PC (Beta). We also revealed new info on the progress we’ve made in our beta, and the future updates that will continue to improve your gaming experience on Windows 10.

Children of Morta Trailer

We showcased a new trailer for Children of Morta that debuted new family members for this upcoming title. Family is key in this roguelike where you gradually meet members as you progress. Children of Morta is a story-driven action RPG game about an extraordinary family of heroes. Lead the Bergons, with all their flaws and virtues, against the forthcoming Corruption. Will you be able to sacrifice everything to save the ones you care for? Find out when the game launches October 15 on Xbox One.

Code Vein Trailer

You thought your living nightmare in Code Vein would come to his end? In this episode we saw a trailer showcasing two bosses you will encounter in Code Vein, one of them (the Blade Bearer) has already crossed your path in the early stages of the game. The Cannoneer is a new one. Those two bosses are what is still awaiting you in your journey… Ready to take on the challenge?

The Outer Worlds Deep Dive with Obsidian

Senior Narrative Designer Megan Starks was on set to showcase the player driven, single-player RPG The Outer Worlds, the new franchise from famed developers Obsidian.

A few of the topics discussed on today’s show was how the story plays out (you can choose what quests you’d like to do; or not do). For example, the characters you encounter may offer a quest that goes off “the critical path” and its entirely up to you on how you’d like to proceed. Additionally, players can approach each quest by sneaking, talking, or shooting their way through.

Also demoed today was the leadership role, which allows gameplay benefits for the companions that you take with you. Not only can companions interject in conversations or say things about what they’re seeing in the world, but also they can become a force against any enemies you run across through companion abilities and their personal perks.

Lastly, we got a look at a few of the science weapons hidden in the game that have a wide range of attacks. Like the Mandibular Rearranger that will change the size of heads that it strikes, as well as the Shrink Ray that will shrink down enemies and make them weaker. We look forward to locating more of these weapons as we explore the Halcyon colony when The Outer Worlds launches on Xbox One and with Xbox Game Pass on October 25.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint Interview

Inside Xbox digs deep into Ghost Recon Breakpoint with actor Jon Bernthal who plays the pivotal role of Cole D. Walker, the leader of the rogue force known as the Wolves. Discover what it’s like to work with trained professional soldiers to add authenticity to the character and see how motion capture brings Cole to life, and most importantly, get John’s take on why Cole has gone rogue.

Hitman 2 DLC Preview

Who doesn’t love new additions? In this episode we featured the new DLC Haven Island (The Resort).  This new sandbox location welcomes players to the warm beaches and tropical paradise of The Maldives. This latest installment picks up directly after the events in the previous mission (New York) and brings an exciting conclusion to the Hitman 2 Expansion Pass content. Haven Island is available today for Hitman 2 Expansion Pass and Gold Edition owners!

Felix The Reaper Preview

We also debuted a behind-the-scenes look at Felix The Reaper. In this quirky vidoc, the developers from Daedalic show us what went into creating this equally quirky game. We also find out that it’s more than just Felix the Reaper’s killing abilities that make him special. He dances his way through this game with ease and moves that make you consider joining in. But don’t let his moves fool you; he’s still a killer. We’re looking forward to this romantic comedy about life of death when it comes to Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate October 17.

Afterparty Preview

Think you can outdrink Satan? That’s one hell of a challenge! That’s exactly what Milo and Lola must face in Afterparty. We interviewed Studio Director Sean Krenkel to find out everything you need to know about this game from the creators of Oxenfree. Prepare yourself and your livers for this when this title comes to Xbox Game Pass October 29.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Trailer

Three Strikes, you are recalled into skies! We debuted the newest trailer for latest DLC Operation Sighthound, which becomes available on Xbox One September 25. Take on all new objectives in this new mission to capture an advanced submarine lurking in the harbor. Maybe you’ll be able to pull it off, thanks to all new weaponry in the form of electronic-warfare aircraft!

Dayz Livonia

Introducing Livonia! In today’s Inside Xbox episode we also unveiled a trailer featuring all-new DLC content for DayZ. This terrain is set in Summer with lots of forest locations as well as additional content that will also come to the main game, like one of the core new items will be a bear who we are using as Livonia’s mascot.

We hope you enjoyed the show, and we’ll see you for our biggest Inside Xbox of the year at X019 in London, on November 14. For more details on X019, our global celebration of all things Xbox, be sure to visit xbox.com/x019.

The Sojourn – Available Today on Xbox One

From the very beginning of working on The Sojourn, we wanted to tell a sweeping tale of light and darkness – a story of life itself and understanding the true nature of reality. The Sojourn releases today, and now we can finally tell our story.

Challenges and puzzles

We didn’t know when we started working on The Sojourn that we’d be making a puzzle game, but eventually it organically shifted in that direction. Our game designer started working on a multitude of ideas and after testing some puzzles using nothing but a whiteboard, we believed we had found the direction we were looking for.

The puzzles ended up telling a lot of the game’s story through symbolism and metaphors, but what we’re most proud of is the core of the game: the challenging puzzles. Every time you think you’ve fully mastered what The Sojourn presents you with, it’ll throw you a curveball – but you can do it, we believe in you!

The Sojourn

The Sojourn

A relaxing experience

We always wanted playing The Sojourn to be relaxing so you could easily focus on getting through difficult challenges. The colorful environments and serene music are very important parts of that, but so is the story. Instead of long texts or cutscenes and voice-overs that interrupt your gameplay, we made The Sojourn with a focus on telling a story through its world and puzzles.

Most importantly however: this makes the experience of playing it way more personal, because The Sojourn won’t interpret its story for you and you don’t have to engage with it if you don’t want to. How you engage with the game is completely up to you.

Perfection Matters

Over the years of developing this game, we put in a huge amount of time implementing and perfecting all of our ideas. It was very important to us that the art in the game was not only breathtaking, but also in line with the story. We crafted four distinct art styles for each chapter of the game, which each convey certain stages of life. One year into the development of The Sojourn, we decided that the art we had wasn’t good enough, so we scrapped it and started over from scratch. We also put in a tremendous amount of effort into designing the puzzles, since it was important to us that they felt as natural and organic as possible.

Harmony was our goal – for the gameplay, art, puzzle designs and music. For these to align with the message we wanted to get across required hours of discussion and a lot of polishing through trial and error during development.

Enhancements

We have added an option to either favor performance or favor resolution on the Xbox One X version of the game. What this means, is that you’ll be able to switch between a native 4K resolution with the game running at 30fps and 1080p resolution at 60fps at will. We really want you to be able to play The Sojourn in whatever way you’re most comfortable with and we hope this feature will help a lot in that regard.

Wrapping up

The Sojourn was an ambitious game to develop for our small team, but we’re very proud of the result and the reception so far. Releasing The Sojourn has been an experience nearly four years in the making, so we really hope you enjoy it as much we have enjoyed creating it!

The Sojourn is available now for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. Click here for additional details.

Family Personalities Serve as Character Classes in Children of Morta

Hi, my name is Aryan Bina, and I’m a Lead Designer at Dead Mage studios, creators of Children of Morta. Our game is an action RPG with a rogue-lite approach to character development, where you don’t play a single character but a whole, extraordinary family of heroes. Gamers hack’n’slash through hordes of enemies in procedurally generated dungeons, caves, and lands and lead the family of Bergsons, with all their flaws and virtues, against the forthcoming Corruption. It will land on Xbox One October 15 and can be played in two-players local co-op with online cooperation upcoming in the future updates.

Children of Morta

Children of Morta

In our game, characters are unlike any other heroes. We took a twist on classic RPG character classes and shaped skills accordingly to their personalities. Instead of going for just warrior or mage, we decided to design even such basic game elements with the family theme in mind. Also, a compelling story must have memorable characters, so we don’t want to end with a group of random and ordinary adventurers known from a dozen of fantasy stories. We needed a real heroic family that feels like a proper one not only thanks to the unfolding tale but also thanks to gameplay mechanics. Our family is called the Bergsons.

Children of Morta

Children of Morta

We built Children of Morta classes around the unique personalities, family-oriented traits, and family archetypes. Bergsons are guarding Mount Morta against the ancient Corruption. In those dark times, Father John would do everything for his loved ones. He feels he need to be sturdy protection for wife and kids so he’s a warrior type – more powerful and less speedy tank character who bears sword and shield.

Meanwhile, Kevin – the youngest of John’s sons – struggles to prove he’s mature enough to serve as a guardian like his siblings. He’s yet not so brave as them so he’s a stealth character with invisibility and throwable daggers up in his sleeve. And the youngest daughter Lucy – red-headed and always bursting with energy, learns how to be a fire mage and is carefully mentored by the kin eldest grandma Margareth. Characters are unlocked throughout the story progress and players will be able to choose also bow-wielding Linda, martial artist Mark, John’s eldest daughter and son respectively, and his nephew Joey who swings a havoc-wreaking sledgehammer.

What’s important is that every family member plays differently. Lucy and Linda are a ranged-oriented duo, with arrows and fireballs flying all around. And you could play them like in twin-stick shooters using the attacks on the right analog stick. Meanwhile, throwing fists Mark or dagger cutting Kevin both are close-quarters combat characters just like John.

But a slower father can dash once at a time, and then must wait for the ability to cool down. And that forces different tactics in dungeons than while playing with for example Kevin. Because that fast-paced kid has three dashes in a row ability. We believe that among our family-based party everyone will find a character who suits their most adored playstyle. This is a hack’n’slash action RPG, but it’s a game about the family after all!
