Generation Zero Content Update: Rivals and Experimental Weapons

Greetings from the Generation Zero team!

Generation Zero is set in an alternative 1980s Sweden in the region of Östertörn and it’s about exploring atmospheric and mysterious environments while also engaging in first-person guerrilla action again hostile machine invaders. All the while you are trying to understand where they originated from, what their purpose is, and where the local population has disappeared off to, while simultaneously scavenging for weapons and equipment to fight them back.

New Content Update

Generation Zero updates on a regular basis, adding content while listening to player feedback alongside bug fixing. In past updates, we’ve released things like bikes and stashes (in-game storage), but in this one we are focusing on intensifying the combat experience through the introduction of Rival and Experimental Weapons.

Rivals

Whether you’ve beaten the game or are just starting out new, Rivals will add a whole new type of challenge for all of you out there. As you fight your way through Östertörn the Machines will start taking extra notice as you destroy more and more of them. Destroy enough and one may evolve to become even more dangerous than usual. These Regional Rivals will be designated by a name and a title that hints at the origin of their evolution. Rivals can additionally be created should they defeat you – these Personal Rivals will have evolved due to their prowess in combat against the humans. Like the Regional Rivals, Personal Rivals will also be designated by a name and title that corresponds to their exploits.

Generation Zero

Generation Zero

But the threat doesn’t end there. How you perform in the world has an impact on how the Rivals evolve even further. Should your Rivals defeat you again, or should you defeat loads of other machines, they will earn experience and level up. Each level makes them that much more deadly – at max level it’s best to think about bringing friends!

Experimental Weapons

What are new threats without new rewards for taking them out?! To match the challenge involved in taking out Rivals, we’ve created a new tier of weapon for each weapon class that have a chance to drop when you defeat them. As the Rivals get stronger, chances increase that you will get your hands on these powerful weapons. One thing you’ll immediately notice about them is that they look like a mashup of existing weapons and the technology used by the machines – so as you can imagine they are a bit different and more powerful than your standard versions.

Halloween Event

As it’s the season to dress up as your favorite spooky characters, Generation Zero will be running a timed event in-game where players can try to grab outfit pieces from 4 different Halloween-classic inspired characters – so be sure to hop in and destroy some machines for your chance to earn everything!

Thanks for reading and we hope you have a blast taking on a host of new challenges and grabbing those in-game treats!

Generation Zero is available now for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. Click here for purchase details.

Storytelling in Space: A Q&A with Co-Director of The Outer Worlds

The release of Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds is upon us, and we’re already having a great time exploring the game’s vibrant universe while meeting (and occasionally fighting) some of its fiercest inhabitants. The game combines a darkly humorous narrative and deep RPG elements to create a unique experience. We recently had the chance to chat with Obsidian Entertainment’s Co-Game Director Leonard Boyarsky about the game’s narrative focus, how some of the endings play out, and the ultra-hardcore Supernova mode.

Xbox Wire: How much dialogue was written for The Outer Worlds?

Leonard Boyarsky: I don’t know how much was written (which would include iteration, cut content, etc.), but we have approximately 420,000 words of dialog, including player lines, and approximately 600,000 words total.

Xbox Wire: How do the dialogue trees work in The Outer Worlds compared to your other titles?

Boyarsky: Obsidian has been using the same dialog tool for quite a long time, so I’m not sure there’s much difference in the overall creation of the dialogs. On TOW, though, we tried to get away from using question node hubs in order to get a more conversational feel.

Xbox Wire: How often will players be able to use the gift of gab to get around situations that might lead to combat?

Boyarsky: Players can get through the main story arc pretty effectively using their dialog skills, and there’s a good bit of side content that they can talk their way through as well. We’ve also included passive dialog combat skills for those instances when they do happen to find themselves fighting for their lives, and a disguise system that allows high dialog skill players to talk their way through some specifically combat-related ‘restricted areas’.

Xbox Wire: Have you discussed how many endings The Outer Worlds will have?

Boyarsky: There are two main endings players can play through, but, depending on their skills, there are several approaches they can take within those two endings.  And this isn’t counting all the different permutations of end slides players can get, which we have not calculated. Let’s just say there’s a lot.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds

Xbox Wire: Are those endings dependent on choices you make with dialogue?

Boyarsky: All the endings (including the slides) are dependent on both dialog and gameplay choices the player made throughout the whole game, not just their dialog choices.

Xbox Wire: So, what’s the deal with Supernova Mode?

Boyarsky: Supernova is the hardest difficulty in the game and offers the ultimate challenge for The Outer Worlds.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds

Xbox Wire: What sort of gameplay challenges will players face when they play Supernova Mode?

Boyarsky: There’s a bunch:

  • Enemies have more health and do more damage
  • Players must eat, drink and sleep
  • Companions can die permanently
  • Crippled limbs can only be healed through resting
  • Weapons and armor work very poorly at zero durability
  • Players can only fast travel to, sleep, and save games inside their ship

Xbox Wire: How does Supernova Mode impact the approach to combat situations?

Boyarsky: Since enemies do more damage and are harder to kill, the player must make sure their equipment (and their companions) are first rate. Use of special attacks at the right time is crucial, and since companions can die, the player needs to watch their health as closely as his own. Perks that let the player heal them with the medical inhaler are very important to take.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds

Xbox Wire: How did you decide to create Supernova Mode?

Boyarsky: We wanted something hard than Hard and that was reminiscent of Hardcore Mode in Fallout: New Vegas and Ironman Mode in Temple of Elemental Evil. This mode makes replaying the game even more challenging. It’s designed for hardcore players and players who have played through the game multiple times and/or found difficult not challenging enough.

Thanks to Obsidian Entertainment’s Leonard Boyarsky for taking the time out of his busy launch schedule to chat with us. The Outer Worlds is now available now physically and digitally for Xbox One and available for download on Windows 10 PC in the Microsoft Store. If you’ve got Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC (or are ready to subscribe), The Outer Worlds is available for download now!

Face Your Fears in Anthem’s Season of Skulls

The world of Anthem is filled with dangers – both known and unknown – lurking in every shadowed corner and around every bend. So when a mysterious fog creeps through the jungle and strange sounds are heard in the distance, you’d expect the residents of Bastion to cower behind the tall, protective walls of Fort Tarsis. Instead, they rise up and face the darkness – and a select few don their javelin exo-suits to fly straight into its path. Will you join their ranks? If so, read on and discover what awaits you in the new Season of Skulls!

What is the Season of Skulls?

This themed, season-long event gives players a chance to face unique challenges and claim awesome rewards. Fort Tarsis will be decorated with the massive skulls of some of Bastion’s most fearsome beasts and lit with huge celebratory bonfires. What else can you find within the fort’s walls? Spend a little time exploring and you may uncover some intriguing secrets about the season!

Anthem - Season of Skulls

Anthem - Season of Skulls

Risks and Rewards

When you’re ready to suit up and head out into the misty jungle, you can choose to take on tough arenas or mysterious Anomalies to gain points, the season’s Crystal in-game currency, and a variety of rewards. To start your adventure choose either the “Season of Skulls” option on the Game Modes menu to begin a timed arena run or “Freeplay” (if it’s been unlocked) to face faction-themed (Arcanist, Freelancer, or Sentinel) Anomalies.

Arenas require a good strategy to truly master, especially if you want to maximize your score. Higher scores mean a place on global leaderboards – where you can show off to your fellow Freelancers – and more Crystals to spend on War Chests and other items at the seasonal store (Herschel’s Hut).

Anthem - Season of Skulls

Anthem - Season of Skulls

Arenas are also subject to Inversions, modifiers applied by the game every week that change how you play. One week your weapons could do twice as much damage, or picking up ammo might increase your shields. Inversions are meant to change the way you play, rewarding different gameplay styles, but they won’t ultimately impact your score.

Anomalies will give you a chance to unlock tough “boss” events that will change weekly and offer up some of the best rewards. Completing weekly and seasonal challenges will let you get your hands on this season’s brand-new armor packs and vinyls. And increased Legendary drop rates combined with the opportunity to purchase a Legendary-only War Chest means more opportunities to secure the gear you really want.

Anthem - Season of Skulls

Anthem - Season of Skulls

How to Begin

While there aren’t any level requirements for playing the Season of Skulls content, you will need to complete the “Incursion” story to gain access to the “Echoes of Reality” level and unlock “Freeplay” (the mode where you can freely roam through the world of Anthem). After that, you’ll be ready to join in the adventure (and rewards) of this challenging new season. So suit up and join the fight, Freelancer!

The Outer Worlds is Now Available for Xbox One, Windows 10, and in Xbox Game Pass

The Outer Worlds, the latest game from renowned RPG developer (and recent addition to the Xbox family) Obsidian Entertainment, has been one of our most highly anticipated games of 2019, so we’re excited to share that it is now available for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. You can download the game on its own in the Microsoft Store or via Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC. The Outer Worlds is a single-player RPG that combines a darkly funny narrative with deep RPG elements and exciting combat to bring a new and unique universe to life.

We’ve taken a look at The Outer Worlds a couple of times here on Xbox Wire. I encourage you to check out our E3 preview and in-depth hands-on feature for details, but here’s the gist: You play as a galactic colonist who is awoken from a decades-long cryosleep after your ship was lost in space. You’ll spend your time gallivanting around the universe, making a name (good, bad, or somewhere in between) for yourself on a variety of unique, vibrant planets on which you’ll meet a bevy of memorable characters.

The choices you make in The Outer Worlds truly affects the way the game plays out, and you’ll be forced to make some tough ones as you navigate your way through this strange new universe. Sometimes, you’ll be able to talk your way through tough situations. Other times, you can sneak in and out of them. Or, if you’re not the sneaking or speaking type, you’ll be able to use one of the game’s many unique weapons to get your way.

The Outer Worlds is an exciting new entry in one of our favorite genres and we think RPG fans are going to love it. It’s available now physically and digitally for Xbox One and available for download on Windows 10 PC in the Microsoft Store. If you’ve got Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC (or are ready to subscribe), The Outer Worlds is available for download now!

The DeLorean 2650 is Available Now in Grip: Combat Racing

The DMC DeLorean is one of the most iconic cars ever made. Since its creation, there really hasn’t been anything else like it. Those immediately recognizable rear lights, the gull-wing doors, the retro yet futuristic look, the sleek windshield leading to an edgy front end…

It’s a sharp, timeless bullet of a car.

Taking this iconic car with such a famous design and turning it into one that fit into the chaotic and futuristic Grip: Combat Racing world was a bit of a challenge. We had to give it huge wheels without looking stupid. We had to bolster it with armor and bring it into the 27th century. We had to design a completely new other side that not only looked cool and unique, but fit well with the “top” side.

Grip: Combat Racing - DeLorean DLC

Grip: Combat Racing - DeLorean DLC

We also had to give it wings.

One interesting aspect of Grip’s vehicles is that their designs need to compliment axles for wheels as well as wings/thrusters that allow them to turn into anti-gravity ships. Rollers and Airblades, is what we call them. Two very different vehicle types dumped into one race. The DeLorean was no different – it needed to look great with both wheels and wings. You be the judge:

Grip: Combat Racing - DeLorean DLC

Grip: Combat Racing - DeLorean DLC

The first thing we did was center the vehicle in its huge tires and then bulk the car up with armor. You can see paneling on the hood, the windows (which are no longer glass), the bumpers, the roof, and pretty much every inch of surface on the car.

Then we had to find a place for the jet thrusters, while keeping the iconic rear of the car intact. We blasted some holes and stuck in some pipes to give the rear an even more powerful and rugged.

Grip: Combat Racing - DeLorean DLC

Grip: Combat Racing - DeLorean DLC

Next was the underside, which was a completely new addition to a DeLorean and required something that was a departure from the top, but still fit the overall themes well. What we came up with was something almost like a functional undercarriage.

Last were the wings, which were admittedly one of the hardest parts to do, as a car with wings can easily turn out a hideous monstrosity. As it turned out, the car doesn’t look ugly at all, and actually looks pretty damn awesome.

Grip: Combat Racing - DeLorean DLC

Grip: Combat Racing - DeLorean DLC

The DeLorean 2650 was a massively enjoyable but tricky endeavor. More design thought went into this car than probably any choice of three other cars from Grip’s roster. The results are a meticulous inception of what we thought an absolutely decked out, futuristic, armored up, jet powered, big wheeled or slick winged DeLorean would look like.  e know people are going to love it as much as we do.

Grip: Combat Racing is available now for Xbox One on the Microsoft Store. It’s also included with Xbox Game Pass. Click here for additional product information.

Wipe out these Haunted enemies and you’ll earn Hecktoplasm that can be presented to Maurice. Submit enough Hecktoplasm and you’ll be granted entry into the Bloody Harvest map.

Beware, though: coming into contact with the Ghosts that rise from the bodies of slain Haunted enemies will induce the new Terror debuff, which haunts the player and diminishes your gun handling, spread, and accuracy. And once you actually reach the event map, things only grow more treacherous…

Scary Stuff and How to Kill It

So, what untold terrors await you ask? How about rivers of blood filled with Ratch? Or maybe some undead Maliwan soldiers who crawl out of graves? Why not a giant boss who’s, like, 90% glowing skull? Bloody Harvest features all that and more – but the good news is, those brave enough to conquer these horrors will be rewarded in kind.

Naturally, there are a few additional surprises in store, but we’ll let you discover those on your own. For now, just remember to install the latest version of Borderlands 3 after the patch containing Bloody Harvest goes live by or before 3 p.m. PDT on Thursday, October 24.

Crusader Kings III is Coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC in 2020

Seven years ago, Paradox Interactive redefined grand strategy, emergent storytelling, and alternate history in one incredible game: Crusader Kings II. Today, seven years of expansions, surprises, and amazing stories later, we announced a worthy heir to the throne at PDXCON 2019: Crusader Kings III is coming in 2020. We can’t wait to share a new generation of grand strategy with players everywhere, and we have even more good news: if you’re on Xbox Game Pass for PC (Beta) it’ll be included in your subscription.

Crusader Kings III

Crusader Kings III is the sequel to an all-time favorite title from Paradox Development Studio, offering players a realm of medieval conquest, intrigue, and high drama. If you’re new to Crusader Kings, you’re about to discover a world where you can live out your own medieval saga as the leader (and the heirs of that leader) of a grand dynasty. You can determine your own fate — conquer your way across Europe, establish your rule over matters of religion, culture, or simply ensure that your rivals meet with a series of “coincidental” misfortunes. If you’re a long-time veteran of our series, then I think you will be both satisfied and surprised with what we have in store for you in this true, worthy sequel.

It’s an exciting honor to have finally revealed the project we’ve been working on, live on stage at PDXCON 2019 in Berlin, no less! What’s more, we were joined on stage by our friends at Microsoft to reveal that we’re sharing this new journey with PC players worldwide through Xbox Game Pass for PC (Beta). Crusader Kings III will be available day one with Xbox Game Pass! If you’ve ever wanted to give our unique brand of grand strategy a try, there’s never been a better opportunity.

Making a sequel that Crusader Kings fans will be satisfied with has been quite a journey. Over the years, CK2 has had several expansions with more content than I can possibly list here. From its humble beginning, we’ve seen the game explode in popularity and take on new challenges, conquering new territories just like an in-game dynasty! Our players have shared countless stories of the treachery, drama, and heartbreak they’ve experienced within Crusader Kings over the years, and with an all-new generation waiting in the wings, I can’t wait to hear about the guile, cunning, and strategy our fans (new and old alike) will attempt. Maybe some of them will even succeed, if they can outsmart the ambitious threats from other kingdoms and from their own councils.
