With everything going on these days, there are plenty of reasons to take a look at the free-to-play library on Xbox One. Whether you’re gaming on a budget, want to get together online with friends, or just want to try out something new, you’ve got a lot of options. That’s where we come in – here is a list of some of our favorite free-to-play Xbox One games, presented in alphabetical order for your reading pleasure. (As a reminder, you’ll need Xbox Live Gold to play multiplayer titles.)
After its surprise announce last year, Respawn Entertainment’s fast-paced first-person battle royale game has quickly become a gaming juggernaut, and continues to grow with frequent updates and unique special events. Unlike many other battle royale titles, Apex Legends features a hero-based combat system that depends on smart team composition nearly as much as quick reflexes. Perhaps not surprisingly given Respawn’s pedigree, it’s also got some of the tightest gunplay in the genre.
Embark on an epic journey across a seamless, vibrant online world and be tasked with battling (and surviving) vicious, lethal monsters that inhabit this untamed landscape. Choose from one of five classic classes, each with its own combo-driven combat experience, then gather your party to explore this richly detailed world of dangerous beasts and divine secrets. Get an in-depth overview of all the classes here in this Xbox Wire exclusive feature.
This intense fighting game combines cartoonish 2D visuals with deep gameplay as part of a genre that’s known as a platform brawler. This means that players are tasked with knocking their opponents off a platform by whatever means necessary, which is usually easier said than done. There are over 40 characters to choose from, each with unique movesets, signature abilities, stats, weapon combinations and flair to suit your chosen playstyle. The action can get pretty hectic, as Brawlhalla supports up to 8 local or online players (with full cross-play so you can battle against friends on a number of other platforms).
The newest entry in the battle royale genre, Warzone ups the ante in a number of ways. 150 players drop into the large Verdansk map, scavenge weapons and supplies, and do battle in increasingly smaller zones as the intensity ratchets up. That’s all fairly standard for the genre, but things get really interesting once you die. Once your health reaches zero, you’ll be captured as a “Prisoner of Warzone” and fight in the Gulag, a separate area within the Zordaya Prison Complex. Win the fight there and you’ll be redeployed back into the action. Lose and… well, you can probably guess.
Late last year, the team at renowned developer Bungie decided to try something new with their highly polished sci-fi first-person shooter: they made it free. Well, not the whole game, but they did give new players a chance to play the core, non-DLC content in Destiny 2 New Light. Yes, that includes everything from story missions and PvP to strikes and even multiple raids. It’s a ton of content that can keep you busy for hundreds of hours, especially since players with New Light can play with their friends who have the paid version of the game.
Unless you’ve been living under a proverbial rock for the last couple years, there’s a good chance you’ve already heard of Epic Games’ hugely popular third-person shooter. Combining a unique building mechanic with highly stylized (yet still skill-based) combat, Fortnite pushed the battle royale genre in exciting new directions. Best of all, the team has kept the game fresh thanks to frequent updates and additions, giving its dedicated fanbase plenty of reasons to keep coming back for more. And don’t even get us started on the mind-boggling array of skins!
While it’s not the biggest title on this list, we included this one on here because it’s a free-to-play favorite of multiple members of the Xbox PR team. Created by the team behind the hugely popular Puzzle Quest, Gems of War mashes together match 3 puzzle action with role-playing and strategy elements to create on glorious whole. As anyone who’s played a match 3 game knows, they are easy to jump into for a few rounds of fun, and Gems of War’s frequent updates give plenty of reasons to keep coming back for more.
Whether you’re looking to jump into the realm of Dungeons & Dragons fantasy, take command of your very own starship and join Starfleet, or fight alongside some of the most iconic DC Comics superheroes, these free-to-play games are full of content and expansive worlds to explore. Each of these titles have been continuously supported over the years with free content expansions making them some of the most compelling MMORPGs to start playing today.
Wield a mix of guns and magic in a fantasy world full of ancient technology in this team-based shooter with strategy elements and deep character customization. Through a unique collectible card system, you can amplify and augment your character’s core set of abilities to suit your style of play across a variety of competitive multiplayer arenas.
Having recently launched on Xbox One, the long-awaited Phantasy Star Online 2 has been around for years in Japan and now more gamers can jump in and enjoy this premiere MMORPG. With procedurally generated environments, unexpected events, and raid quests, PSO2 aims to provide a never-ending adventure that is always filled with fresh surprises. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can get the Ultimate Perks Bundle and a Monthly Bonus to help start their adventure.
Part massively multiplayer online game, part game creation platform, Roblox is one of the most popular online titles in the world. The platform hosts a staggering amount of user-created games and virtual worlds that cover a wide variety of genres, from racing and role-playing games to job simulations and runners. While many of the games on the platform are rudimentary, Roblox is actually a great introduction to game development, allowing fans to experiment with everything from creating and fine-tuning game mechanics to designing virtual items.
Jump in to one of the world’s most popular MOBAs on Xbox One. Get up close and personal on the battlegrounds with a third-person action viewpoint and pick from more than 100 different characters to bring with you into the online arena. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can get started today with the Smite Starter Pass that includes five legendary, fan-favorite gods to play as.
Blending combat with exploration, TERA has been a long-running, combat-focused MMO on PC – where aiming, dodging, and timed-attacks are key — that has been completely retooled for console gaming. With a variety of races and classes, from brawler to ranged attacker, and a vast game world to explore with a tremendous online community to engage, the world of TERA is one that’s truly worth exploring.
Come, Tenno. You are being summoned to join one of today’s most exhilarating online worlds. This mix of melee combat, third-person shooter, and stealth action game wrapped inside one of the most unique sci-fi worlds in gaming is a blast to play. Pick from a variety of Warframes, each with different powers to harness, and level-up your character as you enjoy a wide breadth of content. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can get the Xbox Starter Bundle that includes a variety of boosters and in-game currency.
Going on six years strong on Xbox, World of Tanks is a fantastic tactical shooter covered in several tons of armor. With over 400 authentic vehicles to control, from nimble scouts to thundering heavy tanks, there is a role waiting for you on this competitive multiplayer battlefield. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can pick up the Ready for War Pack that includes $50 worth of vehicles, Gold, and Premium Time
Having just celebrated its first full year of service on Xbox, World of Warships: Legends tasks naval commanders with control of their own warship to take on the open ocean to engage in methodical multiplayer battles. Pick from a variety of destroyers, cruisers, or battleships – each with their own strengths and weaknesses – to lead your team to victory. Xbox Live Gold members can pick up the Jump Start and the Aurora Borealis warship content bundles for free to get started.

Are you ready for a challenge? The next major milestone in World of Tanks on console is coming, with bigger rewards than ever! We’re ready to learn about all this and more as we sit down for an interview with Global Publishing Producer Brian Konar. Grab a fresh cup of coffee (or your beverage of choice) – let’s talk Tanks!
Community Manager Arlette Resendiz: World of Tanks on console is over six years old! Tell us who you are and how do you keep the game experience fresh and exciting over the years?
Global Publishing Producer Brian Konar: Great question! I’m Brian Konar, global publishing producer on what is currently World of Tanks: Mercenaries. My main focus these days is working with our live operations team for events, content and sales. We spent a lot of time last year putting together our seasonal games approach which were a resounding success – players were having tons of fun, earning great content and playing more than ever! The feedback has been exceptional, and we’re about to take that to the next level.
Arlette: For someone who is new to World of Tanks – why might they enjoy this game?
Konar: World of Tanks is a free to play game which is great for those looking for something new to try without any commitment. When you jump in, you’ll find the controls intuitive and easy to learn. As you spend more time in the game though you’ll realize there is quite a bit of depth to the gameplay and every tank line is unique – offering a truly challenging to master experience!
The game is unlike anything else out there – it combines strategy, tank knowledge, map awareness and team play elements for a really engaging experience. The progression systems from tech trees to crews are extremely rewarding, and you’re always looking forwards to that next tank unlock! It’s a ton of fun.
Arlette: What’s next for World of Tanks?
Konar: We’re always working on exciting updates for our community. Next week kicks off our all new World of Tanks: Valor event where players will be able to earn rare tanks and other exclusive content, totally free. We think players are going to love it.
Beyond this unique event, players should be excited to see continual updates to the game with unique content & mechanics, improvements to core systems and balance, and some exciting collaborations we can’t talk about just yet but can’t wait to reveal!
Arlette: Wait, World of Tanks: Valor!?
Konar: Yes! This next milestone is a big deal – we’re rethinking the way we approach the game and how we work with our community and to show we’re serious we’re updating to World of Tanks: Valor. We want our players to feel challenged, and to be rewarded for that challenge. Our audience has been asking for this, and we’re going to bring it! We’ll be known as World of Tanks: Valor moving forwards, and we’ve got some other surprises to look forwards to in the next months. I know this phrase gets thrown around a lot but seriously – players are going to love what’s coming.
Arlette: What can players expect with World of Tanks: Valor?
Konar: World of Tanks: Valor is the start of the next phase in our journey with World of Tanks. We’re embracing some new concepts and approaches which are highly rewarding to players while giving them a challenge that they can be proud to conquer. Four unique, exclusive tanks will be available to earn throughout this event on top of even more highly valuable rewards. The gameplay is challenging, the rewards are awesome, and the sense of accomplishment is epic. We can’t wait for players to enjoy this new event and see what we have up our sleeve next!
Arlette: Any final words?
Konar: World of Tanks: Valor is going to be awesome, players who answer the call are going to be more rewarded than ever with some of the coolest, newest and most exclusive tanks we have available. This is just one step in the journey – the months ahead are going to bring a lot of updates and content that our community have been asking for. We’re excited about the pipeline and this is not just hyperbole. Get ready for the journey ahead Commanders, we’ll see you on the battlefield!
Awesome stuff! Thanks so much for your time, Brian, and also a huge thanks to all our readers. There’s a lot to look forward to in World of Tanks: Valor and beyond, and we hope this first look whets your appetite for even more. Be sure to keep an eye on console.worldoftanks.com for all the latest info on in-game events and content updates. Roll out!

Xbox One X Enhanced
World of Tanks is a global online multiplayer free-to-play game dedicated to tank warfare in the mid-20th century. Custom built for Xbox, World of Tanks is cross-play enabled between Xbox One and Xbox 360 featuring realistic vehicles and environments, enabling players to command history’s most powerful tanks and experience combat on Xbox like never before. Features: • Strategic, fast-paced 15 vs 15 online action. • Over 450 authentic tanks to choose from among 8 nations. • Battle across more than 80 maps with different terrains and weather effects. • Built-in support for Xbox One S pushing the boundaries of graphic fidelity. • Regular updates offer new content and weekly special events.
World of Warships: Legends is celebrating its first mini-anniversary by bringing players rows of content for any kind of captain. First there are the celebration activities where players are bound to get a whole lot of stuff for playing as many ships as they want, then there are the two new campaigns, for a Russian battleship commander and a Russian collectible cruiser, respectively. To add to that, players will have another go at ranked battles with 2 new sprint-sized seasons, one of them with tier VI warships. And finally, the quality of life improvements and features that came straight from the player feedback are also here.
Celebrate one year since the early access of World of Warships: Legends by participating in One Year Strong activities! These include a time-limited win bonus for a good portion of the game’s fleet as well as a dedicated mission to get a unique One Year Strong patch!
Break in the new Russian battleships with their brawling might and high risk – high reward gameplay! On April 13 a new fleet of red machines will enter the Legendary waters and do so loudly! Gangut, Pyotr Velikiy, Sinop and Izmail will be available through early access. These beasts feel the most at home in medium to close range situations, showing best accuracy at around 10 kilometers, but angling is vital, as their citadels sit relatively high.
Meanwhile the whole branch of Russian destroyers, with the pinnacle Tashkent is available for research. If you prefer rangy and speedy gunboats and are willing to sacrifice some maneuverability, these ships might just suit you!
But it doesn’t end there, 2 new shorter campaigns are inbound! “To Tame a Dreadnought” will offer three weeks of trials resulting in Mikhail Kedrov joining your squad. Kedrov, incidentally was the historic commander of the Russian dreadnought Gangut, and he will lend his expertise to your new Russian battleships! What’s of particular interest in this campaign, is how the weekly tasks will stay for the duration of the event, so the more “The Heroic Oleg” is a two-week campaign that will lead you to the Russian protected cruiser Oleg, a well-oiled war machine, that served as a stalwart defender in life. In Legends this warrior is situated at tier II and offers a very straight to the point game play in a truly handsome package, worthy of any collection.
While playing through the new campaigns, players will earn the “Imperial” currency, which can then spend in the Admiralty for various useful items.
Ranked battles make a return, this time captains are offered to compete in two seasons, with a week of reflection and preparation in between. Season 4 will take place of tier V ships and season 5, for the first time in Legends, will call the tier VI machines to battle. Both seasons are filled with rewards which include season-specific patches which can be only obtained during the respective events. Such goodies as boosters, camo and currencies will round up the rewards list.
World of Warships: Legends brings a few changes based on player feedback: the battle HUD can now be scaled for those who prefer their interface elements bigger. To add to that, captains can now take beauty shots of their steel monsters, thanks to the Photo mode in the port. Next, national voiceovers for every nation are added to the game, which means that no matter the game language, players can now listen to their commanders speak the language of their home ports. And finally, a humble Victory Day celebration is coming in the beginning of May. Look out for special missions and camouflage!
Experience epic naval action in World of Warships: Legends, a global multiplayer free-to-play online game where you can master the seas in history’s greatest warships! Recruit legendary commanders, upgrade your vessels, and stake your claim to naval supremacy with or against players around the world. LIMITLESS CONTENT Helm dozens of warships from the 20th century’s most powerful navies, set sail for glory across stunning oceanic vistas and soundscapes, and enjoy regular free updates. CHOOSE YOUR COMBAT STYLE Take control of destroyers, cruisers, or battleships to best suit your playstyle, from a guns blazing approach, to more careful and methodical attacks, and more. TURN THE TIDE IN EPIC 9 V 9 BATTLES Join forces with friends to challenge players around the world, and work together to devise strategies and plan attacks to outgun your opponents and turn the tide of battle.

Game industry changes, popular and trending games differ by era. The arcade games we knew in the 80s and 90s are a minority now. We wanted to rekindle that old-school flame once again with Glaive: Brick Breaker.
Keeping that thought in our minds, we wanted to make a game that would bring those old memories back. With upgraded game systems, new ideas for game mechanics, better visuals, level creator and local versus mode we wanted to present brick breaker genre from a new perspective. You will find many different power-ups in game like magnetic fields, blasters, rockets, fireballs and even special abilities usable in each stage.
Players will find over 200 levels of pure arcade fun, great for short game session between bigger titles. That’s also something we do, while creating games – quick few rounds of Glaive: Brick Breaker during coffee breaks ideally put out any work tension we had.
It’s always great to create something you had in your mind – we incorporated Level Creator mode in Glaive: Brick Breaker, so players can create their own levels and play them. Among different stage themes we have brick types, with different behaviors, possibility to set brick’s durability, color, model and more.
We hope you’ll enjoy breaking down bricks in many levels of Glaive: Brick Breaker as much as we have enjoyed making the game in the first place. We hope so especially now, since our title was made available on Xbox One and we are very happy about this.
