6 Things You Didn’t Know About Project Warlock, Coming to Xbox One June 12

Summary

  • Project Warlock is a love letter to the golden age of classic shooters from the ’90s.
  • Explore 60 vast levels in five settings, from frozen Antarctic base to the sands of Egypt to the medieval castles’ courts and graveyards.
  • See how this game came to be and learn some interesting trivia before it goes live on Xbox One June 12.

Hey!

My name is Jakub Cisło and I’m the developer behind Project Warlock – a fast-paced, retro shooter inspired by cult-classics such as the original Doom, Hexen, Heretic, or Blood. I’m super excited to let you know that my game is releasing on Xbox One on 12th of June and today I wanted to share a few interesting bits of trivia from behind the scenes and the story of bringing my passion project to life.

I started the project when I was still in high school

I started working on Project Warlock (back then called Exitium 3D) when I was just 17. If you’re thinking I must have been pretty inexperienced then, you’re absolutely right. I had a good idea of the direction I wanted to take the game in, but I lacked the knowledge and skills to make it all happen straight away. And so, on my way to becoming a full-fledged game developer there were tons of hiccups, learning on my own mistakes, and uncountable hours of on-line tutorials. All of this in the midst of high-school chaos, exams, and college applications. It’s safe to say that it was a pretty wild time to work on a game.

Project Warlock

My dad played a role in inspiring me to make the game

Project Warlock probably wouldn’t have existed if not for my dad. He himself a gamer, grew up watching the fascinating evolution of video games, he instilled that passion in me very early on. When I was a kid, he introduced me to all sorts of games, but one type grasped my attention the most – shooters. Classical, retro, pixelated, 2.5D shooters, to be precise. I watched intently over his shoulder as he played Doom, Hexen, Blood, or Heretic and I instantly fell in love with the fast-paced action, dungeons, monsters and guns. When I later played the games myself I knew that I wanted to recreate those feelings in a new, distilled form for other players worldwide.

Project Warlock was partly crowdfunded

That’s right. When the game was still in its early stages, I realized that I cannot move much further without securing sufficient funding to buy the necessary tools to create Project Warlock. That’s when I’ve decided to turn to the internet communities, who are as passionate as I am about indie games and their development. I set out with an ambitious goal of gathering the astounding sum of 90 euros. Crazy, I know. But what’s even crazier is my campaign surpassed my wildest dreams and I managed to get 205 euros. Now I was unstoppable.

Project Warlock

At first, levels were drawn on a torn-out piece of paper

Humble beginnings are the best beginnings! It was around the time I managed to bring a few very talented guys on to the project with me. We knew that designing over 60 unique levels is going to be very tricky. We had to recreate the maze-like levels from the classic shooters, filled with secret areas, hidden buttons and ammo stashes. Me and Iain Lockhart have put a lot of effort into mapping out intertwining levels in a way that would be true to our inspirations, while at the same time intuitive and flowing for modern players. It took quite a while and lots of paper, but the environments of Project Warlock were laid out. All that was left was to translate them into the digital world. I still have some of the crumbled-up, chaotically scribbled, original drawings.

Project Warlock

There are 38 guns in Project Warlock

At the core of every good shooter game are its guns, the tools of trade of every badass protagonist since time immemorial. It took a lot of thought and time, but it was worth it. Project Warlock features 12 base guns, each with 2 distinct upgrade options changing and tweaking the playstyle to your liking. On top of that, there are 2 unique weapons for even more options to deal massive damage. If that wasn’t enough, the game also features 8 spells, to raise even more hell.

You can upgrade and customize your character

I felt that even though the classic shooters were perfect as they were, they could use a tweak or two. To bring the genre into a more modern setting, I’ve decided to allow the players to adjust their character to fit their playstyle, by adding a leveling system, which allows them to allocate experience points into different stats and unlock perks that make the character grow as you play.

Project Warlock

Hopefully, these pieces of trivia helped ignite the flame of passion in your heart, whether it be looking to make your own game or simply enjoying some good, old-fashioned retro shooter action. Thanks for reading and be sure to check out the game when it launches on Xbox One on June 12!

Discover the Secrets of We Were Here Together on June 5

Our newest We Were Here game is coming to Xbox One on June 5! To everyone who isn’t familiar with our games, last year we released both We Were Here and We Were Here Too. They’re cooperative first-person puzzle adventures where your primary tools are two walkie-talkies. You and your partner will be challenged to work together on the same wavelength in order to escape the sinister Castle Rock. We Were Here Together brings more co-op puzzle solving, and there’s more! If you haven’t had a chance to play our earlier games, don’t worry – We Were Here Together is a complete experience in itself. Think of it like a TV series where the episodes are individual stories, but also tie together in the longer term.

We Were Here Together

The first two games saw players split up inside Castle Rock – a mysterious medieval castle in the wastes of Antarctica. You might occasionally see the other player from a balcony or on the other side of bars, but often your only direct interaction would be speaking via walkie-talkie. For We Were Here Together we figured that it was time to change things up, and so you start out playing alongside your partner in the same areas. This means you can explore side by side if you like. We’ll give you a hint though… you’ll definitely need to split up in order to solve the puzzles! Still, it’s a more cozy introduction than you got in previous We Were Here games – and you know something else which is more cozy? The base camp where you start your adventure!

We Were Here Together

The expedition base camp is a huge contrast to the sinister castle beginning of the earlier We Were Here games. In We Were Here Together we really wanted to expand the world, and let players explore beyond the halls of Castle Rock. It’s this warm, well lit space which opens out to a pretty Antarctic scene with a seafront view. We hope to give players the sense of going on a journey as the atmosphere changes the closer they get to Castle Rock – there’s still beauty in the icy, snowy outdoor scenes, but things get darker and more threatening as the explorers progress. For the people who will be making their third visit to Castle Rock, don’t be complacent – expect the unexpected…

We Were Here Together

We introduced new areas into Castle Rock itself as well. For instance, the new monastery greenhouses have a very different aesthetic to the castle areas players have visited in previous games. The plants and large windows make the spaces feel more alive and less constricting, but this probably doesn’t prevent some underlying sense of dread. Castle Rock is not a welcoming place, after all… and the other people you might meet inside don’t want to be there any more than you do. You’ll discover their reasons via another new We Were Here Together feature: cutscenes!

We Were Here Together

We introduced cutscenes into the game to give us another way of sharing even more story with players. The addition of cutscenes doesn’t mean that We Were Here Together is abandoning the environmental storytelling and atmosphere of earlier games! While the cutscenes help establish motivations for characters and focus the plot, perceptive players will learn a lot about the world of We Were Here as they look around.

We can’t wait to see what you think of We Were Here Together! As a thank you in advance for all the support we have been given with our earlier games, we have made sure to set up a pre-order including a 10% discount!

Embark on a puzzle solving adventure in which you and a partner must prove you can communicate and work together to escape the haunted Castle Rock. It all begins with an emergency flare lighting up the sky and a distress call waking you from uneasy dreams. Your fellow Antarctic explorers are in trouble, and the two of you left at base camp must work together to launch a rescue mission. If only you knew what you were getting into… From the research base camp you’ll need to figure out a way to get to the source of the distress flare. Once you’re through the frozen Antarctic wastes, you’ll find yourselves separated inside a medieval castle, facing puzzles, secrets, and dangers! You and your partner start out with nothing but your wits and a walkie-talkie each. Observation, smart communication and teamwork will be the only way to escape from the sinister Castle Rock. Your voice will have to lead the way. You and your expedition partner must traverse the Antarctic wasteland and infiltrate a sinister medieval castle. All you start with is a pair of walkie-talkies – will you be able to work together on the same wavelength? Two minds will have to think alike. Immerse yourself in an intriguing cooperative experience as you and your partner puzzle your way through a series of thrilling situations. Discover brand new environments and mysteries, together. We were not alone… Darkness has engulfed the once magnificent Castle Rock and its surroundings. Can you discover the truth behind the grim fate of the fallen citadel and make it out alive… or will the original inhabitants catch you on your way out? PLAY MORE WE WERE HERE GAMES! Street Power Soccer is Bringing Over-the-Top Style and Arcade Action to Xbox One This Year

Street Power Soccer is a unique spin on the world’s most popular sport that emphasizes style, rhythm, precision, and extreme superpowers. Whether you are a lifelong soccer (or football) fan or never touched a ball in your life, Street Power Soccer aims to reinvent the way the game is played. With no regulation size field, 1-on-1 and small team face-offs, and no match officials, this is soccer in its rawest form.

Street Power Soccer

Free from the shackles of the rules of traditional soccer, street soccer celebrates stylish moves and flair while scoring goals against the opposing player or team. Using tricks isn’t just for bragging rights, as they will become your tools to juke opponents and edge out your victory against some of the best players around. When the time is right, players can unleash a variety of devastating superpower moves such as a teleport, reversal, aerial shot, and more that will be the ace up your sleeve to turn the tides of any match and blow away the competition.

Street Power Soccer

To capture the essence of the sport, you will be able to fully customize your character and the way you play through hundreds of available options across a variety of different modes in single-player, local, or online multiplayer for up to four players. Show off your moves in a dance-like freestyle mode, go head-to-head in a 3v3 style power match, face-off in Panna cage battles, elimination modes, trick shot challenges, and more.

Street Power Soccer

The single-player experience will take you through an expansive campaign, where you will follow your aspiring amateur player seeking to etch their name in history under the coaching of street soccer legend Sean Garnier. The road to becoming the street king will not be easy, as the rivals that lie ahead include a lineup of freestyle soccer greats like Liv Cooke, Melody Donchet, Soufiane Bencok, Daniel Got Hits, Raquel Benetti, and Andrew Henderson as you ball to a hyped-up soundtrack featuring works by The Black Eyed Peas, DJ Snake, Snap, and many more.

Street Power Soccer

Street Power Soccer faithfully recreates the growing world and culture surrounding street soccer, while putting a unique arcade spin on the formula that makes it accessible to those new to the sport and creates a high skill ceiling that will continue to challenge players. With its diverse set of online, local, and single-player content, Street Power Soccer will be an experience you won’t want to miss when it comes to Xbox One later this year.

Super Striker League Charges into Roblox on Xbox One

Bombs. Asteroids. Mummies. These aren’t things you’d normally expect to find on a soccer pitch, but in Cinder Studio’s smash-hit Roblox game Super Striker League, nothing’s out of the question.

Super Striker League takes everything you know and love about the sport of soccer and marries it with an eclectic variety of zany arenas and fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay. Struggling to take back the ball from the opposing team? No problem. Send them flying with a giant boulder — or even better, three boulders! Nothing beats the feeling of knocking out the entire team right when they’re about to score a game-winning goal. When super abilities and randomized power-ups are in play, all bets are off. This is soccer amped up to the extreme.

Roblox

In addition to some of the game-changing items you can pick up during each round, you can also customize your character’s equipment to augment their power, speed, and defense stats. The gear you choose can give you a slight edge in battle, adding depth and strategy into the mix. There’s even a slew of dekes and tackles you can purchase with the money you earn after each match to further supercharge your abilities. The more you play, the more you unlock!

Even with all of these options, sometimes all it takes to win is to just be a good team player. Super Striker League developer Cindering offered up some tips for Xbox fans new to the game:

Roblox

“Always remember to pass the ball if you’ve got an open teammate. If you’ve got a scoring opportunity, charge up your shot and try to aim for the corner of the net to easily get it past the goalie. And remember to grab power-ups around the field and use them to your advantage!”

Since its release in the summer of 2019, Super Striker League has amassed millions of fans from all over the world. It even won the coveted Builderman Award of Excellence during the 7th Annual Bloxys, recognizing the game for breaking the sports genre mold on Roblox.

Roblox

“I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who’s been playing Super Striker League over the past year,” said Cindering. “Seeing you all enjoying the game is what motivates me to make it better and better, and I’m super excited to show everyone what I’ve got planned for the game in the future!”

We can’t wait to see what’s next! Lace up your cleats and experience the action-packed soccer insanity with your friends in Super Striker League on Roblox for Xbox One!

Known Issues for Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha

We understand some issues have been listed in previous Xbox Insider Release Notes. These issues aren’t being ignored, but it will take Xbox engineers more time to find a solution. We appreciate your patience at this time!

Audio

  • Users who have Dolby Atmos enabled and console display settings set to 120hz with 36 bits per pixel (12-bit) are experiencing loss of Dolby Atmos audio in some situations.
    • Workaround: Disable 120hz or set Video Fidelity to 30 bits per pixel (10-bit) or lower.
  • Some users have reported that Dolby Atmos for Headphones audio setting changes when the console is rebooted/updated.
    • Note: If you attempt to set the audio to Dolby Atmos for Headphones and see a message advising you to launch the Dolby Access App, please file feedback before launching the app.

Guide

  • We’ve received reports that the Friends tab is not showing the correct status of online/offline friends.
  • Some users may notice that the Guide has changed appearance and functionality, this is expected behavior as there are certain experiences being flighted among a random subset of users in Preview.

Messages

  • Users are reporting that Message notifications that have been marked as read are re-appearing as new. We are aware and investigating the behavior.

My Games & Apps

  • Users have reported seeing black tiles instead of game artwork when browsing their collection.
    • Note: We are still investigating the issue, please report the issue again from the console if you have done so with a prior update and are still seeing this behavior.
  • Some titles in collection may appear with a “trial” tag incorrectly in collection.

Profile Color

  • Sometimes users may encounter the incorrect Profile color when powering on the console.

Are you not seeing your issue listed above? Make sure to use Report a problem to keep us informed of your issue. We may not be able to respond to everyone, but the data we’ll gather is crucial to finding a resolution.

Xbox Insiders are invited to join Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead today!

Have you always wanted to participate in the Alpha or Alpha Skip-Ahead rings? Well, now’s your chance! We use a carefully curated formula to decide when to open enrollment and to which users. But our most important criterion is that you want to participate!

What do Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead offer?

In a previous post we explained why these rings are important for the Xbox Insider Program. Our Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings receive preview builds of future system updates. Team Xbox examines those features and experiences closely to see how they perform. Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead users provide critical feedback we know we can trust. And we’re relying on you to help us make Xbox great!

What’s the difference between each ring?

  • Alpha Skip-Ahead – An “invite only” ring that receives preview builds of a future Xbox One OS release.
    • “Future” release means these builds may not be released to GA for some time. As such, they may contain different features than other rings.
  • Alpha – An “invite-only” ring that receives preview builds of the next upcoming Xbox One OS release.
    • This means this is a preview version of the build that will be delivered to the general audience (GA) next.
    • Alpha receives a preview release of the next upcoming build before any other ring.

What do I have to do to get in?

You have the chance to be part of Alpha or Alpha Skip-Ahead no matter what Xbox Insider Update Preview ring you’re currently in! We have published a survey in the Xbox Insider Hub titled “Joining new rings.” Please complete this survey if you’re interested in joining either ring. Not everyone will be invited, but your participation lets us know you’re interested.

Are you already in Alpha or Alpha Skip-Ahead but want to switch? Let us know in the survey!

Once you have finished the survey continue playing games, reporting problems, and completing our quests and surveys. We’ll take it from here.

How will I know if I’ve been invited?

We will send out an Xbox Live message letting you know enrollment is open. You can manage your enrollment in the Xbox Insider Hub.
