Xbox Insider Subreddit Reaches 100,000 Subscribers

[embedded content]

We are proud to announce that we have reached a milestone of 100,000 subscribers to the Xbox Insider subreddit.

Since opening in 2018, the Xbox Insider subreddit has been the official community discussion hub for all pre-release Xbox content across console, PC, mobile, and web.  This insiders-helping-insiders community was built with the desire to bring Xbox fans together to share experiences, listen to feedback, and shape the future of Xbox.

Xbox Insiders participate in many ways within the subreddit:

  • Xbox Requests is a weekly thread focused on gathering your ideas and suggestions for making Xbox better.  Xbox engineers, PMs, and feature teams regularly review your suggestions to learn from you how to make the entire ecosystem a better place for gaming.
  • News and announcements, much like those found here on the Xbox Insider Blog, keep Xbox Insiders updated on the latest OS updates, game flights, and features and offers a way for readers to respond and share their experience with them.
  • Support for features in preview, such as the Xbox Game Streaming Preview Support Hub, which brings knowledge and support articles to readers enrolled in flights across Xbox both on-console and beyond.
  • Account linking, offering Xbox Insiders an opportunity to connect their Reddit and Xbox Live accounts to quickly reach other gaming communities.
  • General Xbox Insider discussion, Q&A, and other community-led commentary on any Xbox Insider topic.

The Xbox Insider Subreddit offers multiple-language support for readers across the globe, and is committed to upholding Xbox values.

Anyone who wants to share their voice with Xbox is already an Xbox Insider.  To enroll in the Xbox Insider Program, either search for the Xbox Insider Hub on your Xbox console or Windows 10.  For more info on the Xbox Insider Program, check out https://insider.xbox.com, or for more Insider programs across Microsoft:  https://insider.microsoft.com.

On behalf of Team Xbox, thank you for sharing your voice and growing a healthy community.

Game Stack Blog: What the Future of Gaming Means for Developers

MasterChief from Halo

For those of us in the games industry, we’ve always understood the incredible power of gaming. Over the past few months we’ve seen gaming become a part of our social fabric in ways we could never have imagined. It’s clear, now more than ever, the crucial role gaming can play in our lives.

Today we announced we are bringing Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud together at no additional cost for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members – unleashing the power of gaming by making it more accessible than ever before. This September, in supported countries, gamers will be able to play more than 100 Xbox Game Pass titles on their phones or tablets, from the cloud, as a part of their Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership. This is one of many creator focused breakthrough innovations we will unveil, and a product of our multibillion-dollar investment in gaming tools and technology that benefit both players and developers.

As the Head of Gaming Ecosystem at Microsoft, my team is focused on empowering game creators to conceive, build, launch, and manage games – using any and all of Microsoft’s software and services, from Azure to Xbox  – to reach any player and every device. When we created Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud, our goal was to put the amazing titles from game creators all over the world into the hands of more players across more devices. We see a future where players can play console-quality games on any of their devices.

As an industry, we are moving from a world of device-centricity to a place where players, their friends, and their content becomes the center focus.  This shift creates incredible challenge and opportunity for game makers. As players increasingly demand that their gaming experience span devices, creators must have the platform, tools, and services to deliver that experience. The days of having to manage a multitude of builds, game instances and communities across device types and brands will be relegated to the past – unlocking access to more players, opening up revenue opportunities, and expanding gaming communities.

Our commitment has always been to listen carefully to what players and game creators want from the future of gaming. And, as Microsoft and Xbox’s Gaming Ecosystem team, we are on a mission to empower game creators to realize their dreams – by building the platform, tools and services that help make that future a reality. Today’s announcement is another step towards that promise, creating a path for console developers to reach millions of new players globally, on mobile.

Over the next few months, we will continue to share updates and information on our journey with Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud. Next Thursday, July 23rd, please join us for the Xbox Games Showcase and at 10:00am PT on August 3rd, we’ll share more updates on game development at Microsoft through Game Stack Live.

You can read more about today’s announcement, plus the commitments Team Xbox is making to all gamers, on our Xbox Wire blog post.

Hands-On with Watch Dogs: Legion’s London

If you’ve been to London, you’ve been on camera; England’s capital is the most surveilled city in Europe. Regardless of your viewpoint on public surveillance, there’s no debating that London provides a compelling digital playground for Watch Dogs‘ signature brand of techno-stealth gameplay. Following the tales of San Francisco’s Marcus Holloway in Watch Dogs 2 and Chicago’s Aiden Pearce in the original, it’s Watch Dogs: Legion‘s London, and its nearly limitless cast of playable characters, who define an entire city’s struggle to shake off its newly oppressive, corrupt regime.

In a recent hands-on playthrough, I experienced several hours of Watch Dogs: Legion. Without spoiling too much, the game’s tense opening sets up returning digital resistance group Dedsec’s UK presence, and how they’re blamed for a major incident causing panic in the streets of London. It also sets up the ability for much more direct combat and gunplay than previous Watch Dogs entries, including some really cool contextual melee takedowns.

Watch Dogs: Legion

But that doesn’t mean Watch Dogs is turning into a full-blown shooter. How you play is a combination of player choice and… choice of player. Yes, you can recruit and play as nearly anyone in the city; during my playthrough I ran missions as a construction worker, a foul-mouthed football hooligan, even a bespoke-suited, rocket car-driving spy who’d look at home at MI5. Each character possesses its own weapon/ability wheel mapping to the resources at their disposal.

As I progressed through missions large and small, I found the most success when I played to my character’s strengths. The spy slid in and out of restricted zones coolly, and had no problem permanently dispatching a hapless guard with a silenced round. When I tackled an infiltration mission with the football hooligan, I figured why not, let’s go in guns blazing. And it worked! It was just… loud. Even the yob’s “stealth takedown” is a headbutt.

Watch Dogs: Legion

While I appreciated the flexibility and the ability to be lethal and direct when it felt convenient, I had the most fun using smartphone spy tricks I honed in the first Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs 2: surveilling the scene via hacked security cams and drones, setting traps for patrolling guards to blunder into, then sneaking up and knocking out a few on my own. New to Watch Dogs: Legion, I found great value in a deployable spider bot, which allowed me to remotely sneak into facilities and scramble around server rooms to secure data while my actual character sat safely out of harm’s way.

A fun “do it your way” highlight for me – in one mission I found a tech point that I just couldn’t reach – so on a lark I summoned a large construction drone, jumped on it, and ghost rode my way up to cash in the cache. In a game about hacking, feeling like I hacked my way to solution felt very empowering.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Maybe it’s because we’re living in a time where travel is so out of reach, but more than anything, I enjoyed playing in a city that was so recognizable. Watch Dogs: Legion‘s London contains real neighborhoods such as Camden, Islington, and Southwark, places you may recognize such as Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, and of course Big Ben and Parliament. Tube stops serve as fast travel points, which I found to be a nice touch. And yes, you can boost an iconic double-decker TfL bus.

All too quickly, my playthrough came to an end, though I could’ve just cruised around London for hours, seeing the sights and recruiting a diverse cast of characters (with some very enjoyable accents) to Dedsec. There are so many ways to loosen the grip of London’s tormentors, and so many different styles to do it with, Watch Dogs: Legion finds a way to be your cup of tea.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion is coming to Xbox One on October 29, and players who purchase the game on Xbox One can also upgrade to the Optimized for Xbox Series X version – which takes full advantage of the next-gen console’s ray-tracing capabilities – once available at no extra cost through the magic of Smart Delivery.

Save Up to 80% on Select Games in the Ubisoft Forward Sale

With all of the big reveals and news coming out of Ubisoft Forward, there’s never been a better time to get caught up on classic Ubisoft franchises ahead of our upcoming releases, thanks to some big discounts. Before taking a trip to ninth-century England in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, why not journey back to Ancient Greece in the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Ultimate Edition for $15? Maybe before heading to a near-future London in Watch Dogs Legion, you’d like to visit the streets of San Francisco in Watch Dogs 2 for $10 (all editions are 80% off), or Chicago in the original Watch_Dogs for $7? Or perhaps you fancy a getaway to the shores of the Rook Islands of Far Cry 3 for $3 before you explore Yara in Far Cry 6.

These and many other Ubisoft games are heavily discounted throughout the Ubisoft Forward sale, which runs from July 13-20. Both Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 5 are also heavily discounted, starting at $6 and $9, respectively. All editions of Assassin’s Creed Origins are 80% off. The Watch_Dogs Complete Edition is available for 70% off! Head to the Microsoft Store to see these and other deals, and if you missed out on Ubisoft Forward, here are some highlights from the show.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint

The event kicked off with a pre-show, in which various teams from around Ubisoft shared updates on some existing titles. Fans of The Crew 2 will be happy to hear that the Summer in Hollywood event is underway and features the Flashy 80’s update, which will include legendary cars like the DeLorean. On the Trials: Rising front, the longest track in Trials franchise history, called the Gigatrack, will be released later this week for free.

Finally, there’s the Ghost Recon: Breakpoint title update 2.1.0, which will be hitting for all players on July 15. The big news here is that AI teammates are being added to the game, which will allow solo players to choose how they play. The title update will also add a new limited-time event kicked off on July 16, excitedly called Resistance! The event will see players attempting to save prisoners, attack outposts and stop convoys. For more on everything that’s coming to Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, check out our full story here.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Once the pre-show was over, the main event kicked off. The first game we were given a look at was Watch Dogs: Legion. After an intensely kinetic short film directed by Emmy Award winner Alberto Mielgo, we were introduced to the myriad characters you’ll be able to play as when Watch Dogs: Legion is comes to Xbox One on October 29. The game will set players loose in a dystopian vision of London where everyone in the open world is a potential playable character. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer also shared that anyone who purchases the game on Xbox One can also upgrade to the Optimized for Xbox Series X version – which takes full advantage of the next-gen console’s ray-tracing capabilities – once available at no extra cost using Smart Delivery. For more information, take a look at our full Watch Dogs: Legion story here.

Next up was the highly-anticipated Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which follows the thrilling saga of Eivor, a fierce Viking raider, as they search for a new home for their people among the fractured kingdoms of 9th century England. Throughout the journey, you can raid valuable sites, recruit deadly raiders, upgrade your settlement, and assault massive, fortified strongholds. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be hitting Xbox One on November 17 and those who purchase the game on Xbox One can also upgrade to the Optimized for Xbox Series X version once available at no extra cost using Smart Delivery. For a closer look, head over to read the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla article here.

Far Cry 6

The final surprise of the day was the announcement of Far Cry 6, which will be coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox One on February 18, 2021. This time out, you’ll be cast in the role of a freedom fighter. As you struggle for the liberation of your homeland, Yara, there is one man above all who stands in your way: Antón Castillo, portrayed by Emmy Award Nominee Giancarlo Esposito. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll be joined on your quest by Chorizo, who is described as a “dangerously distracting wiener dog.” To get the full details, give our Far Cry 6 announcement a read.

You can be sure that we’ll be bringing you a lot more info on all of the games Ubisoft shared today as soon as we’re able. While you’re waiting, be sure to take advantage of the Ubisoft Forward Sale that kicks off on July 13 and runs through July 20!

Carrion: Become a Monster on July 23

Today, we’re super excited to announce that Carrion, our grisly reverse-horror experience will launch for Xbox One on July 23! Our little team of sci-fi fanatics has been working hard to create an experience we think you’ll love, especially if you’ve always dreamed of portraying an amorphous blob of gristle, teeth and tentacles! We can’t wait for Xbox gamers to get their feelers on Carrion, so we’re thrilled that it will also be available with Xbox Game Pass.

Carrion

But, what is a “reverse-horror experience”? Carrion immerses players in the role of an abominable creature as it awakens in a secret, underground laboratory. With no explanation how it arrived there or for what purpose, there is only one thing on the mysterious monster’s mind: Escape!

Carrion

Players will stalk and consume the secretive humans that have imprisoned them to spread fear and panic throughout the facility. The creature will grow and evolve as you tear down the base and acquire devastating abilities on the path to retribution, including a web-like ranged attack, the ability to bend light to become temporarily invisible, and even possess humans for maximum terror!

Carrion

But Carrion is far from a purely subterranean affair, with your break for freedom revealing a sprawling overworld that connects different parts of the facility. New paths will become accessible through the evolution of the creature’s abilities and successful completion of goals, and it will take all your resourcefulness and cunning to navigate your crusade of chaos. You could say it has a little metroidvania vibe, minus the persistent backtracking.

Carrion

Having said that, if you choose to revisit certain areas to instil some fear among those still wandering the corridors, that’s entirely your call. We’re not here to judge.

Carrion

We hope Xbox gamers are as eager as we are for Carrion’s release, and we’d like to thank the amazing people at Microsoft and the ID@Xbox team who have helped bring our humble horror-fest to you all on July 23!

CARRION is a reverse horror game in which you assume the role of an amorphous creature of unknown origin. Stalk and consume those that imprisoned you to spread fear and panic throughout the facility.
