Nintendo’s Share Price Falls Yet Again With A Lack Of Game Announcements Possibly To Blame

Today has seen yet another significant drop in Nintendo’s share price, falling by 5.27% by the end of the trading day in Japan.

We’ve seen several fluctuations in share price over the last few weeks, with the most recent drop seemingly being linked to Nintendo’s E3 presentation. It was suggested that the drop was due to investors’ doubts over Nintendo’s ability to achieve its hardware and software sales estimates, with a lack of new games being shown during the presentation causing concerns.

Now, prices have fallen once again for seemingly the same reason. The Nikkei (a stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange) believes that today’s drop is thanks to a lack of information surrounding new titles and a drop in Switch sales. You can see the drop below.

Despite these concerns, we’ve already heard that Nintendo is still confident that it can achieve its goal of 20 million consoles being shipped this financial year, and now-former Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has stated that the company will reveal more about its full 2018 lineup in the future. Essentially, it seems that shareholders are worried about a lack of information, but Nintendo wants to keep any future announcements secret for as long as possible, effectively harming each other.

Hopefully things will settle down a little once Nintendo does reveal its future plans.

Random: Nintendo Switch Is Getting Its Own VR-Style Headset, But There’s A Catch

While VR continues to bubble under elsewhere in the industry, Nintendo has remained indifferent to the technology; when your first ‘Virtual’ product ends up being a massive dud, we guess you become a little more cautious about asking your customers to strap lumps of plastic to their heads.

However, those of you who crave a VR experience on your Switch can rest easy (sort of), because Japanese company Thanko is releasing a headset which is compatible with the console and gives you a ‘virtual’ screen size of 120 inches.

Dubbed the ‘Eye Theater’, it’s not strictly a VR headset as all it does is transfer the image from the console to the headset’s display and features no motion-sensing capabilities whatsoever (which should be pretty obvious as the Switch doesn’t have any VR capabilities that would allow for this).

The unit costs ¥22,780 ($206/£156) and is expected to launch in September. It comes with a HDMI conversion kit which allows it to be connected to the Switch, and will also work with other USB Type C devices, such as smartphones. It weighs 250g and boasts a display resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels.

Let us know if you’re crazy enough to want one of these by posting a comment.

Video: Check Out Battle Princess Madelyn’s New Kickstarter Update

Indie developer Casual Bit Games is hard at work on the action-platformer Battle Princess Madelyn, but it’s taken the time out of its busy schedule to give its Kickstarter backers (and the rest of the world, thankfully) a look at some of the new and fresh additions the studio is currently working on.

There are some new updates to certain stages, including a really striking autumnal level, and the return of a rather familiar face in the form of the game’s gruff blacksmith. There’s also a glimpse at how you can collect weapon and armour shards from the various Cursed Chests littered around its world.

What do you make of Battle Princess Madelyn? One to add to your collection when it eventually arrives on Switch? Share your thoughts below…

Random: People Are Making Mario Kart Courses In Fortnite’s Playground Mode

Fortnite‘s Playground mode finally got itself up and running again yesterday, and a few ridiculously creative players have already been using their talented minds to great effect.

Not content with building simple towers for battle royale safety, players have been using the new mode’s one-hour time limit to build truly unbelievable Mario Kart tracks. Our top pick was shared on Reddit here by JoshB_C (we’d urge you to take a look) and features trolleys as vehicles, bounce pads as jumps, and intricate metal wall buildings to create a full Mario Kart experience. They even added music from the game to give the video more of an effect.

That’s not the only Nintendo related creation we’ve seen, either, with some fans taking to Twitter to share their Mario-inspired structures.

Of course, once your hour is up in Playground mode, all of your buildings get reset; we imagine a good chunk of that hour is used up to build the circuit in the first place, so there can’t be much time to actually enjoy these giant creations. Perhaps Fortnite’s next step needs to be implementing a way to save your customised worlds?

Have you explored Fortnite’s Playground mode yet? Have you been able to create anything anywhere near as impressive as this? Let us know with a comment below.

Review: Arcade Archives Renegade (Switch eShop)

Hamster is really spoiling us with this port, because unlike the PS4 version, this Switch offering manages to include both the original Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Japanese release and the reskinned, The Warriors-inspired western localisation known as Renegade. While both games play essentially the same, it’s nice to have the choice between either iteration of the classic brawler.

When it comes to actual plot, only Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun will be of help. As soon as the game starts, a cutscene shows main hero Kunio coming to the aid of a friend getting pummelled by Hanazono High School students at the Nekketsu High School front gates. True to his hot-blooded nature, Kunio gives chase and finds himself alone at the Shinjuku subway station facing the entire gang, including their leader – and Kunio’s eternal rival – Riki Samejima. If you manage to come out on top, said friend gets pummelled again, so you’ll need to head out beat up gang-upon-gang of wannabe badasses.

However, the western version is a little bit different. In Renegade, you play as Mister K, and instead of a school uniform, you sport some leather attire. There are no cutscenes and the bosses have no names. What it loses in personality it somewhat makes up for the dystopic, gang-controlled urban setting. So it’s the same game, but with two very different flavours. While most will probably have fond nostalgic memories of this version, we can’t help but feel like we’re playing the lesser version of the game.

Controls use the familiar Double Dragon scheme and, as such, will probably take you a bit before they become second nature. ‘Y’ strikes to the left, ‘B’ jumps and ‘A’ strikes to the right. Considering this was one of the first games in the genre there are actually quite a lot of moves Kunio/Mister K can perform: striking in the direction you are facing will unleash a series of chained punches. Connect a few of these and they will induce a stunned state on enemies.

You can then either keep pummelling them to the ground or move up to them and grab them by the collar and chose two types of punishment: hitting in their direction will perform up to three knee strikes while hitting away will perform a pleasing and useful crowd-controlling overhead throw. Once on the floor, you can move to your foe, hit down on their chest to assume a mount position. Hitting toward will deliver a series of fatal head punches. Hitting jump and one of the attack buttons will deliver a standing jump kick to either direction. In short – there’s a rewarding amount of depth to your moveset.

Mastering all these moves, crowd-controlling the rival gangs and baiting the bosses is the way to succeed in this game, and while newcomers will truly feel the odds stacked unfairly against them, once everything clicks you can do the main game loop in a very satisfying 15 minutes. Unlike future entries in the genre, there is no way to recover energy from food on the ground and you can’t pick up weapons dropped by fallen foes. If you want to catch a break, tweak around the excellent Hamster emulation wrapper to change the number of lives to two, get an extra life at 30k points and even drop the difficulty to easy if you find yourself stuck on the first level. No shame there: this game is as hardcore as they come.

Graphics are certainly lovely by 1986 standards: chunky, well-animated sprites run around knocking heads in some lovely iconic scenery. Each level is two or three screens long, with level one and level two featuring lethal falls off the right and left side of the screen that you should use and abuse to dispatch enemies (while trying not to fall in yourself). Sound effects are also pleasing and the occasional speech samples add some personality to the game’s four bosses.

If you’re fluent in Japanese, you will notice that the coarse language has been toned down in the English version, which is understandable. Hamster’s usual addition of online leaderboards – as well as Hi-score chase and Caravan modes – will help you get the most out of this single-player experience.

Conclusion

Renegade/Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun represents a lovely and important piece of forgotten video game history. For the hardcore fans that were raised on it, or simply as a curio for a new generation of gamers looking to find out on how the scrolling beat-’em-up began, this is still a recommended if not essential purchase. There are certainly better options of the genre on the Switch already, but none of them might have even existed if Kunio didn’t have such a short temper in 1986…

It Looks Like Skyrim On Switch Will Never Get Mods Or The Creation Club

It seems extremely unlikely that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will ever receive the Creation Club feature on Switch, despite it being present on other consoles.

The Creation Club feature, which was first introduced into Fallout 4 before making its way to Skyrim, essentially allows players to access mods for the game on consoles, as well as on PC. Despite being available on PS4 and Xbox One, the feature hasn’t made its way over to Switch, and it looks like it never will.

Todd Howard, director at the game’s developer and publisher Bethesda, recently made comments about owners of the game on Switch, saying “Skyrim Switch has a big community that we haven’t supported the way we’d like.” Eurogamer followed up on this statement to find out exactly what was meant, and Howard’s response wasn’t exactly reassuring.

“They asked for mods,” he replied, “they asked for Creation Club – ‘When are we getting more stuff?'”

When asked about what was being done about this, Howard said:

“Right now we’re doing nothing. People, they’re on other things. Our Switch group did Fallout Shelter … and that’s done really well. I’m surprised at how well it’s done…”

“We would love to see it happen but it’s not something we’re actively doing.”

To put it simply, Bethesda is aware that Switch fans want to see mods in their portable version of Skyrim, but it isn’t something that the studio is focusing on. Whether this will change in the future is unknown, but it certainly sounds like Bethesda is fully committed to other projects.

Are you fussed about having mods in Skyrim? Are you disappointed that it might never be a thing in Skyrim on Switch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

New Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa Receives 96.51% Approval Rating From Shareholders

Nintendo’s 78th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders took place just a few days ago on 28th June, and details have now emerged surrounding the approval rating of key figures in the company.

The list includes a collection of big names including the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Shibata – who has recently become a director for the company since leaving his post as Nintendo of Europe’s president. Also included is the very recently appointed company president Shuntaro Furukawa, despite the fact that he only stepped up to this new role last week, who managed to secure a 96.51% rating.

  • Shigeru Miyamoto (Representative Director, Fellow): 97.37 %
  • Shinya Takahashi (Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer): 97.28 %
  • Shuntaro Furukawa (Representative Director and President): 96.51 %
  • Ko Shiota (Director, Senior Executive Officer): 97.28 %
  • Satoru Shibata (Director, Senior Executive Officer): 97.28 %

To put this into perspective, previous Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima saw an approval rating of 87.14% in his first year. This did eventually rise to 97.70% after the clear success of the Switch, however.

With such a high number of changes at the top, including a completely new senior management structure in Europe, the next few months will be a very interesting time for Nintendo. If these approval ratings are anything to go by, though, everything looks to be going swimmingly.

Meet Blast Man, One Of The Explosive New Bosses Coming To Mega Man 11

Mega Man 11 may only be getting a digital release in Europe (boo, hiss!), but following our recent hands-on at E3 2018, we’re confident it’s going to bring the series back with a bang. Talking of bangs, Capcom has unleashed a slew of new details on the upcoming platformer, including a glimpse at one of the brand new bosses – Blast Man.

Here’s an excerpt from a recent Capcom Unity post:

This Robot Master is clearly on a short fuse, and it shows in the design of his stage: the ruined remains of a theme park and movie studio hybrid that Blast Man has shaped into his personal playground. He’s added several personal touches, including a number of signs featuring himself as the star of “Blast Man Adventure.” It seems like Block Man isn’t the only one with a narcissistic streak!

The road to his lair will be populated by, shockingly, explosive-related enemies including fireball-launching foes and explosion-prone mini-bots. Familiar baddies such as Sniper Joe will also be hand to make your road to this particular Robot Master an extra dangerous one. There’s also the new Chain Blast weapon to utilise, should you bring this new boss to his knees.

Capcom also unveiled a new challenge, known as Baloon mode, which replaces all enemies with blue and red balloons. With a timer running, you’ll need to pop every blue one and avoid all the reds to pull off the best score.

Mega Man 11 is heading to Nintendo Switch on 2nd October. Share your thoughts on these juicy new details below…
