Review: Rock Boshers DX: Director’s Cut – England’s Dreaming With This Old-School Blaster

Steampunk wasn’t really a ‘thing’ back in the heydey of 8-bit video game development, but if it had been, there’s a good chance something like Rock Boshers DX: Director’s Cut would have appeared in glorious cassette or cartridge form. With its Victorian dandies on a space-age adventure for gold and glory, developer Tikipod has given us the kind of silly period sci-fi that would have had H.G. Wells jumping into his time machine posthaste.

Coming from the same studio that gave us Aqua Kitty UDX (look out for plenty of Easter Eggs for said underwater feline scattered across the game), this unusual indie started out as a PlayStation Mobile exclusive before being given the ‘Director’s Cut’ treatment on PC and consoles almost four years ago. It’s even had an outing on PS Vita, so its debut on the semi-handheld Nintendo Switch certainly seems fitting. And while it’s yet another port of a game that’s long been lauded elsewhere, its mixture of retro aesthetics, feet-tapping chiptunes and twin-stick shooting shouldn’t be so swiftly dismissed.

After all, this is a game that places you in the shoes of a young Queen Victoria, who decides the recent advent of rocket engineering and a plan to colonise Mars shouldn’t exclude members of the Royal Family. So Queen Vic dons a disguise (including goggles and a top hat, as befits a punk of steam) and rides a bullet-shaped rocket directly to the red planet. Of course, all is not as it seems and our crownless monarch finds herself unceremoniously thrown into a labour camp. She soon escapes, grabs a gun and starts unleashing some royal justice.

So yes, it’s ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. But that’s what makes Rock Boshers DX so enjoyable as a result. The developer has perfectly recreated the look and sound of a proper ZX Spectrum game – right down to the roughness of the audio to the cassette tape-esque loading screen – making it an ideal fit for the eShop’s pro-retro track record. But while it has all the hallmarks of an ‘80s top-down adventure, there’s still very much a modern twist to be had.

Victoria can move and shoot in any direction, with an unlimited supply of shots with her pistol and limited ammunition for a variety of other guns she’ll pick up along the way – ranging from machine guns to rocket launchers and beyond. This is a twin-stick shooter after all, and with movement mapped to the left stick and your firepower to the right, it takes seconds to get a feel for Tikipod’s steampunk adventure.

The further you push into the story and its many single-screen maps, you’ll find the same basic premise – locate various colour-coded keys that systematically remove any blocks of the same pigment anywhere on the map – then reach the elevator to rise further through Mars’ crust. Of course, it’s never that simple and you’ll encounter myriad foes along the way, each with their own threat and tactics. You’ll need to dodge the fire of red guards and spray and pray when mowing down waves of respawning yellow zombies, for instance.

The real fun is learning how best to take each one down, especially more than one kind are spawning at once. Orange larvae will slither towards erratically but can be briefly knocked away with a well-placed shot, while pink centipedes can’t be killed and will follow you wherever you go. You’ll need to lead them through a complicated path if you want to grab a key from a chamber or dead-end and avoid… well, a dead end. It can get really tricky the further you progress through its many levels and areas, but with a wealth of hearts to collect (each hit removes a heart) there’s always an ideal route through each map.

A lot of work has gone into recreating that retro feel, from the choice of playing in 8-bit computer or an 8-bit console (with the former adding in that tape-loading intro and a more basic set of colours and details) all the way down to the brilliant chiptune soundtrack Electric Café has served up. The soundtrack is a selling point all by itself, and will have classic VGM enthusiasts nodding with approval. Sprinkle in zombies, moustache-twirling villains and in-game arcade cabinets and you’ve got one bizarre little curio that deserved to shake off the death sentence release that was its PlayStation Mobile exclusivity.

Conclusion

At this stage, Nintendo Switch has plenty of retro-inspired titles to its name – the eShop is practically brimming with them – but despite such considerable company, Rock Boshers DX: Director’s Cut saunters in with gameplay that confidently straddles the old gaming world and the new. Fans of the ZX Spectrum days will lap up Tikipod’s faithful recreation of the 8-bit era, and with a ton of levels and modes to unlock there’s plenty of replay value to be had with Queen Victoria and her Martian odyssey.

Koei Tecmo Is Announcing A New Nintendo Switch Game On 6th December

Koei Tecmo has been one of the biggest supporters of the Switch and it doesn’t appear as if it will be slowing down production on the hybrid platform any time soon. Following the announcement Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Scarlet would surface on Nintendo’s latest system early next year, the Japanese company is now reportedly teasing a new game announcement for Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC via a new website, with the following line:

“The fated battle begins.”

The big reveal is scheduled for 6th December. As Gematsu notes, this announcement will take place in Japan many hours before the Video Game Awards has even started in the US. Given how this game will also be appearing on multiple other platforms, don’t expect to see any special Nintendo cross-overs like Hyrule Warriors or Fire Emblem Warriors. While you might have already convinced yourself it’s another announcement linked to the long-running Warriors series, some fans are speculating Ninja Gaiden could make a comeback.

What do you think it could be? Tell us below.

Teslagrad Receiving A Physical Makeover On Nintendo Switch

The platform puzzle game Teslagrad has already been released a few times digitally on Nintendo systems and now it will finally receive the physical treatment on the Switch.

Following its arrival in December last year, the art director on the Rain Games’ eShop release asked fans on Twitter which box art they would prefer for Teslagrad’s physical release. Take a look at both of them in the tweet below:

There’s currently no information about the publisher handling the physical release of this game, or when exactly it will arrive. In our review, we gave the Switch version of Teslagrad eight out of ten stars and said it was worth double-dipping for the portable iteration. It may even be worth purchasing a third time if you enjoyed it on previous occasions.

Will you be adding this game to your physical collection whenever it does arrive? Which box art do you prefer? Tell us below.

WayForward Joins Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Development Team

In a recent Kickstarter update, it has been revealed WayForward will be assisting with the development of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. After a series of delays, Producer Koji ‘Iga’ Igarashi said the experienced team would help him realise his “vision” for the game, and would hopefully be able to make it even better.

“In consideration of their past achievements, WayForward will be helping the development team realize my vision for this game. Maybe I am even more excited than everyone else – with their help Bloodstained will become an even better game.”

He went on to reveal how WayForward had already started helping out and was currently trying to stamp out “really tough bugs” before the game is released.

The independent developer will join forces with ArtPlay and DICO. WayForward, as most Nintendo fans will know, is incredibly skilled when it comes to creating side-scrolling games and is best known for the Shantae series. Hopefully Bloodstained turns out to be just as brilliant, whenever it is released on the Switch in 2019. According to Iga, a launch date announcement should be sooner rather than later now that WayForward is helping out.

If you would like to experience Bloodstained right now, there’s an 8-bit spin-off titled Curse of the Moon, which was released on the Switch eShop earlier this year.

Are you anticipating the release of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night? Are you glad to hear WayForward is helping? Tell us below.

Paprium’s Disastrous ‘Launch Party’ Leaves Backers Furious As Unfinished Prototype Is Shown Off

The saga of Paprium – the next game from Pier Solar developer WaterMelon – rolls ever onwards. Earlier this year we spoke to one of the game’s artists about the stop-start nature of the project, which is now six years into development and was given a large injection of funding in 2017 when people were asked to place pre-orders.

WaterMelon’s Gwénaël Godde (AKA: Fonzie) has proven to be quite hard to pin down over the past few months, but the company has always assured backers that the game is coming and that it would launch at the close of 2018 (a year after its original projected release date). This is despite no solid footage being shown of Paprium running on an actual Sega Mega Drive / Genesis console.

At the end of last month, hopes were raised when WaterMelon announced it was holding a special party to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sega’s 16-bit console and the impending launch of Paprium (a party that was so low-key that we’ve only just been notified that it even happened). The kicker? What was shown at the event was clearly an unfinished version of the game that was running off a development cartridge covered in wires and LEDs. To make matters worse, the game lacked any enemies and crashed more than once during the demonstration. Glitches were also everywhere.

There were some interesting insights to come out of the party, though. Paprium will use a feature called ‘MegaWire’ to connect to the internet – via your phone or other internet-ready device – which we presume means an online leaderboard is planned (if the game ever gets released, that is). It is also stated that, like Pier Solar, the game will come with additional features that are unlocked via the Mega CD. Some irritated fans have sarcastically suggested that this connectivity has been included to allow WaterMelon to ship the game incomplete and add in missing elements later on.

Adding in extra features is a nice touch, but the fact that Paprium was shown in a clearly unfinished state when apparently the game is nearing production has predictably raised alarm; surely at a launch party, there’s no harm in demonstrating the real deal? Why risk showing off a bare-bones beta and causing such a stink if you really have the final game waiting to be shipped out to those who had pre-ordered it?

Grab A Friend For Some Hectic Co-op Train Management In Conduct Together! On Switch

Indie developer Northplay has revealed that Conduct Together! will be zooming towards a Switch near you as early as next week.

As you can probably tell from the trailer above, this one has you managing a collection of trains in a puzzle-like environment; if you get your timings and organisation wrong, things will quite literally go up in smoke. To be successful, you must channel your inner conductor, switching tracks and avoiding collisions in increasingly challenging action-puzzles.

As the name suggests, you can also team up with a friend to take on the challenge with a buddy in tow. Simply hand out your spare Joy-Con to set up your very own team of train conductors; up to four players can play at any one time.

We’ve got a few screenshots for you to check out below.

The game is set to launch on 5th December in Europe and 6th December in North America. You can find it right now in the ‘Coming Soon’ section of the eShop; prices are set at £17.99 / $19.99 respectively.

You Can Now Dress Up As Brock And Misty In Pokémon GO

In its continued celebrations surrounding the launch of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, Niantic has added new Gym Leader customisation options to Pokémon GO.

Yes, players can now hit the streets, fields, and busy city centres to catch new Pokémon (or just sit on the sofa and hope they come to you) in new sets of Brock and Misty gear inspired by their appearances in the new games. As you might expect, the Brock gear is exclusive to male characters and the Misty outfit is exclusive to female users.

Each piece of individual clothing (top, trousers, etc.) will require a specific amount of PokéCoins. As always, you can either add PokéCoins to your account by spending real-life money in the store, or generate in-game currency by defending your local Gyms (if you really keep on top of your Gym defending, you should get enough for the whole set within a couple of weeks).

As a reminder, this weekend sees a huge Community Day celebration where all Pokémon which previously appeared in Community Day events will be returning. If you’re willing to brave the cold, this would be a great time to get out there and start catching ’em all. You can read all about the weekend’s event here.

Will you be treating yourself to these new styles? Tell us below.
