Site News: So, Where’s Our Team Sonic Racing Review?

Team Sonic Racing

Sega’s long-awaited Team Sonic Racing hits the Switch (as well as other formats) next week, and you may have noticed that reviews have appeared online today thanks to the embargo ending. However, we don’t have a review going live because, at the time of writing, we don’t have Team Sonic Racing. It’s kind of hard to have one without the other.

In fact, we’ve been told by Sega that we won’t have the Switch version of the game until launch day – which puts us in the same boat as you guys. Taking that into account, our review of the game is naturally going to go live post-launch, which is something we don’t like doing, but – as you can appreciate – is out of our hands in this particular instance.

For what it’s worth, the game seems to be getting fairly positive reviews on other formats. Our friends over at Eurogamer gave it a ‘Recommended’ award, saying it’s “a smart spin on the character kart formula”.

Our sister site Push Square gave it 7/10, adding that “it might be lacking the wow factor SEGA’s other IPs brought to Sumo’s other racers, and it’s a shame performance is a little rocky, but this is a good option for PS4 players who want some arcadey thrills“.

IGN gave it a 8.5 score, stating that “Team Sonic Racing adds a creative twist on the arcade racer with its exciting team-based mechanics that put strategy and precision at the forefront alongside blistering speeds across mesmerizing tracks“.

GamesRadar+ was less kind, awarding the game 2.5 stars out of 5 and lamenting the fact that it “doesn’t stand up to other kart racers today”. Ouch! To be fair, that’s the harshest review so far, and something of a lone voice.

Naturally, those reviews aren’t based on the Switch version of the game, which we’ll be getting our hands on once it’s available in stores. Just like you!

More Addictive Space Combat Awaits As Everspace Gets Physical Release On Switch

everspace

A physical Nintendo Switch release of last year’s Everspace – Stellar Edition is “definitely happening”, developer and publisher Rockfish Games has confirmed.

The news comes from the studio’s Twitter account, where it has posted the oddly satisfying image of Everspace Switch carts in what appears to be a glorified egg box. There’s no news of a release date for this just yet, but we imagine the physical collectors among us will be ready and waiting for it as soon as it hits store shelves.

If you’re not up to speed with this roguelike slice of solitary space combat, check out this little snippet from our full review (where we awarded the game an 8/10).

With gratifying space combat, an addictive ‘rogue-lite’ core loop and even some light, entertaining writing along the way, it performs admirably – if not flawlessly – on Nintendo’s console. Overall, we had a hell of a time with it and this port does a cracking job of preserving the full experience on a handheld. If any of this sounds remotely enticing, we’d heartily recommend investigation.

Have you already bought this one digitally? Might a physical release be enough to persuade you to give it a go? Reveal all in the comments below.

Video: Team Sonic Racing Launch Trailer Speeds Onto The Scene

A launch trailer for the upcoming Team Sonic Racing has been released by Sega. If you’re looking forward to checking this one out next week, make sure to give it a watch.

In all honesty, it looks pretty much how we’d expect it to, and could well turn out to be a very decent racer on Switch. The trailer shows off some gameplay segments and non-gameplay footage, featuring all of our favourite Sonic stars as they battle it out on track.

We don’t have our hands on a Switch build of the game just yet, but our friends over at Push Square have just posted their review of the PS4 version. Here’s a snippet:

At the end of the day, Sumo Digital has served up a solid kart racer that succeeds in bringing something new to the table. It won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but the cooperative racing adds a nice layer of rapid fire strategy. It’s implemented well, to the point where standard races feel distinctly secondary. It might be lacking the wow factor SEGA’s other IPs brought to Sumo’s other racers, and it’s a shame performance is a little rocky, but this is a good option for PS4 players who want some arcadey thrills.

Are you going to be picking this up when it launches on 21st May? Speed on over to the comment section and let us know.

New Adapter Will Let You Use Switch Controllers With Your PS4 And Vice Versa

Ps4switch

If you’ve ever dreamt of playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with a DualShock 4, this might just be your lucky day. A new adapter is on the way which will allow Nintendo and Sony controllers to work with their rival systems.

Japanese company Columbus Circle is set to release a small device called the ‘Super Converter’ which can convert the wireless signals coming from your controllers. As you can see in the images below, this means that a PS4 can be used with Joy-Con, a Switch Pro Controller, and even older Nintendo controllers such as Wii Remotes, while your Switch can be used with Sony’s DualShock 4 controller for the PS4.

Converter

It will reportedly be possible to update the adapter’s firmware using a PC, and each controller’s button assignment settings can be completely customised.

We have actually seen something similar to this in the past, too. Console accessory maker 8BitDo released a wireless USB stick which enabled a variety of controllers to be used with the Switch. It sounds like it should be impossible without a bit of sneaky tech wizardry, but it seems like you have plenty of options if you want to mess around.

We’re not sure anyone’s ever considered playing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with a Wii Remote, but it’s certainly a possibility.

Would you ever try something like this? Or is using a Nintendo controller on a Sony console a crime against nature? Let us know in the comments below.

God Of War’s Art Director Continues Amazing Collection Of Realistic Smash Ultimate Drawings

If you cast your minds back to February this year, you might remember that we shared a number of pieces created by God of War art director, Raf Grasetti.

In his spare time, Grasetti has been using his talent to produce his own take on characters from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The results have been astonishing, and he’s produced several more pieces since we last explored his work. We’ve included them below.

And these have been combined with other designs to create a Super Mario series piece.

Last time, we shared Grassetti’s takes on characters like Kirby, King Dedede and more, another batch which included Diddy Kong, King K. Rool and Mewtwo amongst others, and the original set featuring stars such as Link, Samus and Sonic. We’d urge you to go back and check out all of those pieces if you haven’t seen them already.

Scrolling through each image will present you with older designs, variants of certain characters, and more. Between this and Detective Pikachu artist RJ Palmer’s recent realistic Pokémon drawings, there seems to be something of a trend going on. And we’re loving it.

What do you think? Do you hope he’ll go on to finish the set? Share your thoughts on these pieces with us in the comments below.

Warren Spector Thinks Disney Should “Absolutely” Be Involved In Video Game Development

Warren Spector IMG

At some point throughout your gaming career, you’ve probably played a Disney game. One of these titles might have even been the 2010 Wii release Epic Mickey, by Junction Point Studios. The director of the first game, Warren Spector, considers this to be one of the “high points” of his career. Unfortunately, the sequel flopped and this followed with the closure of the Junction Point in 2013.

During a recent interview with VGC, Spector was asked if Disney should still be making games, following comments from the Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger in February, claiming the company had no interest in returning to this area now that Star Wars was licensed to EA.

In reply, Spector said Disney should “absolutely” be working in the video game industry, given the IP it has at its disposal and stated how it was “a real shame” the organisation was limited to licensing.

“Absolutely. With the properties they control, I think just being a licensing organisation is a real shame.”

He went on to explain how he was proud of his work and probably would have “stuck it out” if he had the chance.

“Bob Iger runs the biggest media company in the world and I don’t, so he’s probably smarter than I am. But I would’ve stuck it out.”

Disney Infinity was another project Spector believes was a “step in the right direction” for the company. Unfortunately, though, there were apparently people at Disney Interactive who simply didn’t understand video games.

“There were people at Disney Interactive who didn’t like games and didn’t get games. I think that was a large part of the problem.”

What do you think about Warren Spector’s comments? Do you think Disney needs to rethink its relationship with the game industry? Tell us below.

My Time At Portia Switch Update Improves Performance And Adds New Content

When My Time at Portia was first released on the Switch, the loading times were incredibly painful to endure. The game took multiple minutes to boot up, load a file and enter the game world. Exiting and entering houses was even a hassle. Fortunately, Team 17 and its developer Pathea Games have been working around the clock to improve the performance of the Switch version.

While the previous update sped up the load times and overall performance, the game still struggles and is a tad sluggish at times. In the hope of making the overall experience a little more enjoyable, a new update has now been released. It includes a performance improvement for input lag and sturring, a fix for the “infinite loading” issue and various bug and crash fixes.

It’s not just a bandaid fix, either. There’s also new story content and side quests to check out. More in-game features have been added as well, including birthdays, family features, new clothing, new character customisation and new ruins to mine.

You can view the long list of patch notes over on the official game page.

Do you own this game on the Switch? How are you finding this latest update? Tell us below.
