Rayman creator Michel Ancel leaving games industry to work on wildlife sanctuary

Renowned video game designer Michel Ancel is stepping away from the games industry after over three decades to work on a wildlife sanctuary.

Ancel is best know for creating the Rayman franchise and acting as the lead designer on the first two games in the series, Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends

He spent the vast majority of his career at Ubisoft, overseeing the development of other notable titles including Beyond Good & Evil and Peter Jackson’s King Kong.

Announcing his career pivot on Instagram, Ancel explained his two current projects — Beyond Good and Evil 2 and Wild — are in safe hands, and offered a bit more insight into what his next venture entails.

“Today is very special for me. After more than 30 years, I’ve decided to stop working on video games and fully focus on my second passion: Wild Life” he wrote. “My new project takes place in the real world and consists [of] a wild life open sanctuary dedicated to education, nature lovers and wild animals.

“Many of you might want to know what will happen to Wild and Beyond Good & Evil 2. No worries, for many months now the teams have been autonomous and the projects are going super well. [There’ll be] beautiful things to be seen soon.”

Directing The Outer Worlds DLC The Peril on Gorgon

While Obsidian gears up on new games like Grounded and Avowed, it hasn’t turned away from last year’s standout hit The Outer Worlds. This month saw the release of Peril on Gorgon, a new DLC adventure for the developer’s capitalistic dystopian RPG.

To lead up this DLC, Obsidian tapped lead narrative designer Carrie Patel, who took over game directing duties from Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain. It’s a huge task for any game developer to take the role, since it often involves a move into leadership over departments they weren’t previously involved in.

Peril on Gorgon is structured similar to some of the DLC content you might have seen in BioWare’s RPG games from the 2009-2014 period, or what Gearbox has used to fill out its Borderlands releases. They’re specific stories sequestered away in a new area of the game, meant to be experienced by players who’ve reached the endgame or new players attracted to the title with the release of new content.

Peril on Gorgon takes place on the sequestered Gorgon asteroid, home of a mysterious research facility. Patel credited the post-release development of Gorgon for giving Obsidian time to look closely at what players responded positively to in the original game, which helped her team hone the vision for the DLC.

She said this led Obsidian to look closely at the game’s Marauder enemy types and the in-game drug called Adrena-Time as sources of inspiration, since both go somewhat unexplored in the main game. Unlike most of the other games’ areas, Gorgon draws players into a noir-type adventure by way of a package containing a severed arm, where a mysterious heiress tasks them with tracking down her missing mother.

Patel credited lead narrative designer Kate Dollarhyde with helping shape Peril on Gorgon’s overall thematic direction. “One thing that Kate specifically brought up was the idea of the Manhattan Project and the notion of these people who work together on something terrible and destructive, and then they sort of split up and fell apart from each other,” Patel said.

She said the team looked at the problem as “how you tell a story where someone’s personal experience is very much what grounds  a much larger epic, world altering experience?”

What’s neat about Patel’s described approach is this storytelling focus centers on the game’s non-playable characters, rather than the player character. She compared it to The Outer Worlds’ other planet-driven arcs, which focused on local disputes informed by a system-wide crisis, and drift away from the game’s main quest.

“This is one of the thing that I think that I think is very interesting about RPGs in general is that this genre has a reputation for being all about the the survival of kingdoms the conquest of world…but I think what many players really attached to are stories that feel personal.”

When it came to taking over the role of game director, Patel said there wasn’t necessarily pressure to live up to Cain and Boyarski’s original vision, and that the main challenge was in learning to provide vision for other, non-narrative departments that were outside her previous purview.

The DLC’s noir-focused vision meant the team had to figure out how a far-off asteroid could resemble the classic look of ’40s crime flicks, and how character and story could be filled out without an area filled with bustling NPCs.

“The pulp noir version of The Outer Worlds had really big implications for environment art and area lighting,” she explained. “[As a director,] it’s really helpful to just say ‘here’s the vision we want to create, and as a cross-disciplinary team, if we’re all on the same page about this, what are the different tools that we have from our disciplines to do that?”

Laying the foundation for making that shared vision meant learning how to ask questions over her seven years with the studio. “I think doing well in that transition is very much about learning how to ask the questions that you need to ask,” she said. “I will never be an expert programmer or an accomplished artist. But I do need to be able to talk to the programming and the art teams to understand what their processes and concerns are and how that affects the content we’re gonna make.”

Patel’s narrative designer background gave her a new perspective on a classic RPG problem–what happens when you make great content, only for the player to speed right by it, or ignore it, on their choice-drive adventure? She explained that Obsidian’s procedure by this point is to test and build around the possibility of any NPC in a questline being killed, but part of the process means adopting a mentality that players may not be approaching your game for the same moments you enjoyed in maknig it.

“Part of the beauty of an RPG, I think, is having a structure that is open and flexible enough to give all of those players enough room to make their story the way they want it,” Patel said. “I think as a designer, you just have to accept that like, ‘okay, I put this thing here, not everyone’s gonna see it, but the people who are interested in it, who do look for it and find it like they’re gonna I love it.'”

“In a way that makes it even more meaningful because you kind of know who you’re creating those moments for.”

Patel’s leadership rise comes with one particular complication–the COVID-19 pandemic that moved the team to remote work. Any leader has particular challenges in uniting the team, but without face-to-face interactions, the normal tools of team unity aren’t available to her. This led Obsidian to push for some creative teambuilding efforts.

One of them was Peril on Gorgon bingo. “[What] we actually did as a team that was that was pretty fun is have [Twitch streamer] Cohh Carnage play through the DLC over the last few days, and we set up an office bingo,” Patel said with a laugh. The boards were specifically built to cover Peril on Gorgon’s wilder moments, to see what he’d find in his run.

“It was something we could do to remotely just to connect around the stuff we worked on in a really light hearted social manner.”

First-party PlayStation games priced from $49 to $69, with some also coming to PS4

The folks over at PlayStation have offered up a bit more information on their next generation plans following today’s big launch day reveal, most notably disclosing how much it’ll be charging for first-party titles on PlayStation 5.

Like other publishers, it looks like PlayStation is adding a bit of a next-gen upcharge to its new releases. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, games from SIE Worldwide Studios will run anywhere between $49.99 and $69.99 on PlayStation 5.

That range is well-represented in PlayStation’s first-party launch lineup. Of the four retail games currently announced as internally developed launch games, two are priced at $69.99 (Demon’s Souls and Destruction AllStars), one is priced at $59.99 (Sackboy A Big Adventure), and the last at $49.99 (Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales).

Building on those launch plans, PlayStation announced that a small selection of PlayStation 4 games will be downloadable on PS5 by PlayStation Plus subscribers at launch. Those 15 titles represent what PlayStation believes is a generation-defining collection of PS4 releases and includes titles like Bloodborne, Persona 5, God of War, and more.

One other interesting tidbit from PlayStation’s blog post roundup is that the company isn’t entirely shying away from multi-generational launches as some interviews had previously suggested. Two launch titles, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy A Big Adventure) will launch on PlayStation 4 as well as PlayStation 5. The same is true for Horizon Forbidden West, which will launch in 2021.

“While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch,” reads Ryan’s blog post. He explains that the decision is born out of the realization that “the PS4 community will transition to PlayStation 5 at different times,” somewhat mirroring Xbox’s reasoning for making all of their own first-party games multi-generation releases.

As such, PlayStation will also allow those that buy PS5 launch games on PS4 to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free once they make the next-gen jump. Given that the wording here specifies launch games, it seems that Horizon Forbidden West isn’t included in this free upgrade promise despite its plans to launch for both PS4 and PS5.

Analysis: Sony banks on PlayStation Studios to deliver winning console generation

Game industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis offers up a quick overview of PlayStation 5’s standing and possible future as we head into the next generation of game consoles.

Sony has announced the launch date and pricing of its next-generation console, PlayStation 5 and has also revealed new big hitting AAA games that will be coming to the platform including a new God of War and Final Fantasy XVI which will be a console exclusive for 12 months. Sony also announced PlayStation Plus Collection – an instant collection of leading PS4 games for PS Plus subscribers that purchase a PS5.

As has occurred in previous years, there is a slight staggering of the console launch day between different regions and country markets due to logistics. The initial launch taking place on Thursday November 12th in the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. The rest of the world will follow on Thursday November 19th including Europe, Middle East, South America, Asia and South Africa. Mainland China and India will follow at a later date.

The PS5 will launch at $499/€499, while the digital version will come in at $399/€399. In comparison, Xbox Series S and X launch on November 10th and are priced at $299 and $499.

Sony is following the same strategy that delivered a resounding success during the PS4 generation. It is centering its strategy on games and exclusives made specifically for the new platform, and allowing those games to fully utilize the latest technology included in the PS5.

With Microsoft playing the long game and retreating from the traditional product strategy of releasing exclusives for a new console, Sony has an open goal with the launch of the PS5. It has rightly identified this as a key competitive strength and is expected to push the message of ‘games built specifically for the PS5 platform’ heavily in the run up to launch. In the context of selling next-gen consoles this factor clearly gives Sony a substantial advantage, although Microsoft would argue that its approach is more consumer friendly, focused on the gamer and about keeping its audience engaged.

  • Xbox Series S at $299: Sony will continue to underline that the digital version of the PS5 priced at $399 will offer the exact same high-end experience as the disc-based version of the console at $499. While Xbox Series S is cheaper, it does not have the power of the PS5.

  • Xbox All Access: Sony already has a well-established network of retailers it works with that offer finance for purchase of console hardware and software. This will continue to be the case for PS5. These deals tend to be more flexible than the All Access offer and are localized to fit consumer tastes. While more flexible, they are not formalized under a brand and likely do not have the marketing investment that All Access enjoys.

  • Xbox Game Pass: Sony’s PlayStation Now and its new PlayStation Plus Collection will support the company’s efforts to combat Microsoft’s Game Pass. However, Game Pass’ inclusion of new releases is distinct from Sony’s own PlayStation Now subscription service and a key competitive differentiator. Xbox Game Pass has become increasingly important to Microsoft’s competitive positioning and will play an expanded role next-gen including alongside a shift into cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate. Sony does not currently have an adequate competitive response to Xbox Game Pass.

According to Ampere Analysis data, at the end of Q2 2020, the installed base of PS4 (all versions) stood at 111 million, Xbox One (all versions) at 51 million and Nintendo Switch (all versions) 57 million. Sony has built a formidable global brand in PlayStation over the last 25 years. While Microsoft will be more competitive next cycle, especially in the key battleground of continental Europe where the company lost ground during the Xbox One cycle, the PlayStation brand still resonates more strongly than Xbox outside of the US and UK markets where the situation is more balanced. This is unlikely to dramatically shift during the next cycle however strong Microsoft’s positioning is. Our current outlook is as follows:

Clayxels — Bringing Clay Modelling and Claymation to Unity

Currently featured in the Unity Game Dev Humble Bundle as well as being 50% off on the Unity Asset Store, Clayxel is an asset that extends Unity to add support for modelling then animating clay-like 3D objects.

Clayxels is described on the Store page as:

Clayxels is an interactive volumetric toolkit to sculpt models in editor and in game. It uses voxels to generate a lightweight point-cloud that can be changed in real-time and used in a whole bunch of different ways, all without any heavy pixel ray-marching. Works both in editor and in game, everything made with clayxels can be changed interactively at any time.

Works with all render pipelines, built-in, URP, HDRP.

It is important to note that Clayxel currently *does not* support the WebGL targets. In the video below we go hands-on with Clayxel, give you an overview of it’s capabilities and show you a simple tutorial on how to get up and running creation clay objects in your Unity game. The Unity Humble Bundle runs until the end of September, so don’t miss out if Clayxel looks interesting to you. Another asset in the bundle, UModeler, was covered in an earlier GFS post. The above links contain an affiliate code that pays a small commission to GameFromScratch if used to purchase (and thanks so much if you do!).
