Current and former Riot employees discuss the toxic feedback culture of the studio

“I’ve seen myself argue endlessly for the value of something, and for that thing to never be taken seriously until a man or a player said it.”

– An anonymous former employee speaking to Kotaku about the work culture at Riot.

In a recent interview with Kotaku, several current and former Riot employees discuss the toxic workplace environment which ultimately drives women out of the studio.

Fellow devs should note that several sources spoke to Kotaku over the past few months, and each one came to the same consensus around what makes Riot a hostile environment for some of the women who work there: the culture.

According to these sources, the feedback culture at Riot rewards men and demeans women.

Kristen Fuller, who departed Riot back in March, explains she got interrupted a lot. “It’s hard to get a word in edgewise,” she says. “I’ve been talking and someone else starts talking and starts to talk louder when I don’t stop. A lot of men don’t take no for an answer.”

Another former employee, who remains anonymous, describes how her largely-male division often insulted her after she refused to do secretarial work, despite her non-secretary position. “I feel like that type of working environment caters to men,” she explains.

“When I went to a stand-up meeting it’d be a lot of men talking over each other. I knew a lot of women were used to being interrupted or not feeling comfortable talking over men. I didn’t feel like I had the ability to talk over them,” she adds.

The apparent double standard for women within the company have made the culture of aggression worse. “I’ve seen myself argue endlessly for the value of something, and for that thing to never be taken seriously until a man or a player said it,” echoes a former employee.

Women who do speak up and follow Riot’s on-paper ideals are reprimanded, often told that they’re being too loud and emotional. Male employees who spoke to Kotaku agreed that Riot’s feedback culture wasn’t built to support women.

“The company dismisses feedback when it comes to gender,” explains a male employee. “Riot is a new upstart company whose explicit mottos are ‘Challenge convention’ and ‘Feedback culture.’ To not see that reflected in the way Riot addresses social issues feels extra bad.”

However, it’s worth noting that there are women within Riot who are actively trying to work on improving the conditions expressed by current and former Rioters. Soha El-Sabaawi, who leads diversity and inclusion initiatives at Riot, explains how she’s training leaders at Riot to recognize different personality types in meetings and empower marginalized groups, including women.

“We are trying to create touchpoints with Rioters about what good feedback looks like,” El-Sabaawi says. “Just because we have an open feedback culture doesn’t just mean you can send someone a lot of super harsh feedback without context.”

Additionally, Katie Chironis, a senior narrative designer who has been at Riot for two months, echoed El-Sabaawi’s statements in a tweet about working to cultivate a better environment for women at the studio.

“To all the women out there who were ever hurt by men above them, who were denied promotions, spoken over, harassed, objectified, or insulted, i have been you at some point in my past, and i stand in solidarity with you.”

The investigative piece was part of a longer interview around the workplace culture at Riot, so be sure to read it in its entirety over at Kotaku.

Fortnite Mobile Version 5.20 Patch Notes

Epic have released Patch 5.20 for Battle Royale sensation Fortnite. As we’re well into Season 5, this isn’t a game-changing update although the double-barrelled shotgun is now a thing. Reading through the patch-notes, there’s a mobile-specific section that’ll be relevant to you guys:

  • Customizable fire mode selection screen added to mix and match fire modes.
  • Added FPS (frames per second) mode setting for mobile devices.
  • Added another individual quickbar button to the HUD layout tool.
  • Added mobile Elimination Feed.
  • Separated Quickbar buttons are more visible in the HUD Layout tool.
  • Harvest tool will now alternate between itself and the previously selected item when tapped.

Bug Fixes

  • Completed or expired Challenges are now cleared while navigating between Challenges.
  • Ramps will no longer be built through other ramps.
  • Shooting when interacting with objects no longer occurs.
  • Fixed inconsistency with mobile low power mode support.

As Collin has pointed out in our building guide, building is less prevalent in the iOS meta because of the fiddly controls. Fixing the ramp issues will mean you may have to pay more attention to what you’re doing if you’re trying to throw down some elevation in a hurry.

Also, did you hear? Fortnite’s Android version is by-passing the Google Play store. Whenever it releases, you’ll need to download the game’s APK directly from Epic Games’ website, and then do an ‘unknown source’ install. It’s not as scary as it sounds; on my Galaxy S6 it takes you straight to the relevant security setting when you’re trying to install something outside of the Google Play store. It also gives you the option to only grant an exception for that specific install, leaving you secure against anything you might accidentally download that will try and install itself.

We’re going to put together a proper guide for Android users, including installation instructions, so that you guys can get up-to-speed with the iOS crowd as quickly as possible.

Complete the mission…or face erasure. That’s all Neku knows after regaining consciousness in the middle of a busy intersection without his memories. This definitive version of SQUARE ENIX’s RPG classic brings the dark story to life on the Nintendo Switch system along with a new scenario and some new remixed music.

Vibrant themes of Japanese youth culture, food and fashion are seamlessly integrated into the gameplay and storyline. Video: Developing the stylized art of Fortnite

In this GDC 2018 session, Epic Games’ Peter Ellis covers the evolution of art style used in Fortnite and best practices used to create a triple-A free-to-play game with a small art team.

Ellis discusses how the Fortnite art team took several ideas over a span of years to produce a successful, cohesive result. What initially started out as drab, monotone environments became bright and colorful set pieces with lots of personality.

He also goes into how the stylized art was rendered inside UE4, and provides some insight behind the decisions for how objects in Fortnite would end up looking.

It’s an informative talk that’s definitely worth watching, so developers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to do so now that it’s freely available on the official GDC YouTube channel!

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its accompanying YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC or VRDC already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.

Gamasutra and GDC are sibling organizations under parent UBM Americas.

SNK artist discusses discrimination in the Japanese games industry

Gender discrimination in the workplace has been notorious throughout the history of game development– and it was no different back in 90s Japan, especially for early SNK artist Hiroko Yokoyama.

Thanks to translations provided by Necrosoft Games’ Brandon Sheffield, Yokoyama shares some of her experiences through Twitter when 3D design was being introduced to games, and how women were essentially barred from learning the technology.

Yokoyama describes how the unnamed company she worked for in the ’90s wanted to train two artists in the rising tech of 3D polygons, but any women applicants were instantly dismissed.

She volunteered to learn the tech herself after the two trained workers had left the company, but being married, her boss declined on the basis that “married women don’t work properly after giving birth.” He also apparently dismissed her work on the grounds that she was a “fat, ugly, otaku” and wrote off his comments with an “it’s just a joke” excuse.

While Yokoyama eventually went on to to illustrate for the Sonic Wings games (and is currently collaborating on the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection), she’s no longer working in the industry but is aware that gender discrimination remains active and expresses hope that the situation improves for the future.

Be sure to read the entire Twitter thread here, which goes into some more detail about how Japanese women in the 90s were pushed out of tech. It’s well worth the read.

New Football Manager Entry Releases this November

Football fans, rejoice! The next iteration of Sports Interactive’s Football Manager series has been announced. Football Manager 2019 will be launching on PC, MacOS Android and iOS on November 2nd.

[embedded content]

As with Football Manager 2018, the mobile version of Football Manager 2019 will come in two flavours:

  • Football Manager Touch 2019 will be a direct port of the PC game, and only works on tablets. It costs more (FM Touch 18 goes for $19.99 at full price), and has higher spec requirements, but is essentially the PC game on your tablet.
  • Football Manager Mobile 2019 will be a slim lined/adapted version of the full game for mobile. It’ll be iOS Universal and work on phones generally, have lower spec requirements and will be priced in-line with other premium mobile experiences. FM Mobile 18 is $8.99 at full price.

There’re quite a few changes coming in FM 2019 – for the first time there will be licensed German DFL teams, for one thing, and they’ll be talking about more concrete game changes towards the end of September.

We have yet to get around to actually reviewing 2018’s FM Mobile and FM Touch releases, so we’ll try and plug those gaps as soon as possible.
