Minecraft and RTX

Yesterday, Mojang announced the future of the rendering engine for Minecraft (Java Edition is not included in this list).

You can find their full announcement here, which also includes screenshots:

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/render-dragon-and-nvidia-ray-tracing

Minecraft is on so many platforms, and the great thing about that is that it opens up so many fun possibilities about how we can change the experience for each one. We added touch controls when we developed the mobile version, put you inside Minecraft on Gear VR, and enabled multiplayer across consoles and devices with our Better Together update!

Today we’re announcing two new ways we’re taking advantage of existing and updating hardware. One, we’re expanding the scope of Minecraft on bedrock platforms with our new engine, Render Dragon. Second, we’re pushing the graphical possibilities of the game by partnering with NVIDIA to bring real-time ray tracing to Minecraft. Prepare your eyes!

NVIDIA RAY TRACING

We couldn’t be more excited to take advantage of the new ray tracing technology from NVIDIA. It’ll be playable on Windows 10 with devices that are capable of DirectX R, such as with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU (and we plan to expand it to future platforms that support DirectX R raytracing).

With the capabilities of this tech, you’ll be able to experience your Minecraft worlds with realistic lighting, vibrant colors, , realistic water that reflects and refracts naturally, and emissive textures that light up. What does ‘emissive’ mean? It means you’re about to see Minecraft like you’ve never seen it before!

Well, actually, ‘emissive’ is a technical adjective that means ‘having the power to radiate something, especially light, heat, or radiation’ but shhh don’t ruin the moment — watch the below video of ray tracing in action instead:

We’ll have more news to share later this year, as well as the technical requirements. Naturally, we want your feedback through every step of this process. That’s why we plan to enable you to preview the new ray tracing features by turning on “Optional graphics with RTX” in the settings screen of Minecraft in a future beta. You can expect that feature in the new year. We also plan to enable some of these new features, such as improved emissivity and directional lighting, on other Bedrock platforms! Speaking of which…

RENDER DRAGON

You’ll see individual Minecraft Bedrock platforms update in the months ahead as we learn the capabilities of our lovely new game engine, Render Dragon. You may have already seen a preview of Render Dragon in action if you watched Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference on-stage when we demoed Minecraft Earth.

It featured edge highlighting and new lighting techniques, which is just the start of the visual and performance upgrades we’re planning to make with Render Dragon. Render Dragon supports a range of graphics features, depending on what your device is capable of. Not all devices will support ray tracing, but we will have some graphics enhancements on most devices.  Again, it’s all about taking advantage of different hardware to offer the smoothest Minecraft experience possible, no matter what device you’re playing on!

We’ll have more news to share soon, so you can start trying out new ways to play!

Java Edition: Combat Snapshot 2 and MCF updates

Jeb has posted a new combat snapshot over on Reddit.

If you missed the original snapshot, you can find it’s Reddit post here.

Below is the post he made, explaining some of the changes made along with how to get this snapshot to try it out.

Feedback for this should be posted on their dedicated feedback page located here: https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/topics/360001335672-Java-Combat-Snapshot

These are the edits in this version:

  • Decreased attack speed of swords

  • Attacking while crouching will now disable the shield during the attack

  • Shields protect against critical attacks again

  • Removed auto-attacking by holding the button

  • Fixed creative mode bugs

  • Fixed scale of the hotbar attack indicator

Some clarifications:

  • The theme of the next major update will be announced at MINECON. These combat tests are done in parallel and will be included when they’re good enough (i.e. the next theme is not “combat update”)

  • Weapon reach is always active (not only for special attacks), but during special attacks the reach is increased by an additional half a block

  • Hold to auto-attack will always be enabled for controller and touch

Installation instructions:

Finding the Minecraft application folder:

  • Windows: Press Win+R and type %appdata%.minecraft and press Ok

  • Mac OS X: In Finder, in the Go menu, select “Go to Folder” and enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft

  • Linux: ~/.minecraft or /home/<your username>/.minecraft/

Once you have the launcher set up you can download the server files from there as well.

Cheers!

They have done some changes which should hopefully mean that the site will load quicker for you and will not have to download as much to get you to your favorite threads.

They have also implemented a change which should fix the long running issue preventing you from viewing your old PMs. If you still have any problems viewing your messages however, please let us know so that we can investigate.

They are still aware of other issues with the site and will be looking at resolving those issues in future updates.

Development Snapshot for Combat Changes

The combat update from 1.9 has been a controversial topic for many. Some loved the changes, while others hated it and refused to move on from 1.8.

Mojang has been hard at work trying to make it the best experience possible to the needs of PC players while also making sure those that play on phones or tablets have a good experience.

To this end, jeb has posted on Reddit a new custom snapshot which contains several large changes to combat.

This is a summary of those changes, as explained by jeb:

This “manually installed Java snapshot” is the first experiment of the new direction of combat mechanics. It’s based upon the current Java Edition system, but with the following major changes:

  • Overall much faster attacks

  • Attacks only happen when fully charged, even if you spam click

  • You can hold to attack

  • Weapons have different reach (attack range)

  • When you stop attacking, the attack timer will continue charging to 200%

  • At 200% you can perform special attacks (crits, sweeping, knockback) and these attacks have longer reach

  • Sweeping only occurs on swords with the Sweeping enchantment

  • Critical attacks (jump attacks) bypass shields

  • Shields have no warm-up delay

  • Shields also activate when crouching/sneaking

  • If you hit something, the target’s “invulnerability timer” will be shorter if you have a quick weapon

Installation instructions:

Finding the Minecraft application folder:

  • Windows: Press Ctrl+R and type %appdata%/.minecraft and press Ok

  • Mac OS X: In Finder, in the Go menu, select “Go to Folder” and enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft

  • Linux: ~/.minecraft or /home/<your username>/.minecraft/

Once you have the launcher set up you can download the server files from there as well.

If you have any comments, issues, or other criticisms, then leave a comment over on Reddit so that jeb will see it.

A New and Exciting Beginning

Deciding to close the Minecraft Forum, along with a handful of other community websites, wasn’t an easy decision for our company, but we could no longer justify the substantial engineering resources it took to run the properties. It was a sad day in our office when we announced the sunsetting of many beloved sites.

Previously, we weren’t able to entertain selling the sites because they were built on a proprietary platform. It would be a monumental task for an external engineering team to maintain or migrate the communities. Knowing this, we announced the site closures, but just as the sun slowly began to set for these properties, a figure appeared . . .

As of this week, we’ve identified a company with the necessary experience to buy and run these sites (including the Minecraft Forum), so that the passionate communities will continue to have homes on these long-standing sites. With this, we have started to transfer the sites to Magic Find. As for the staff on these sites, it will be up to them and Magic Find to decide how they’d like to move forward.

This isn’t the end for the Minecraft Forum. It’s a new and exciting beginning. We wish Magic Find the best as we say goodbye to several of the properties that helped our company grow into what it is today.

This will be the last update from Curse/Fandom. All future communications will be from the new site owner.

Important Minecraft Forum Archive Announcement

Today we are announcing that we have made the difficult decision to transition the Minecraft Forum from an active website to a read-only archive. This decision has been made after careful consideration about how we can best serve the Minecraft community with the resources we have available. A read-only archive of the website will ensure that the valuable content contributed over many years is safe-guarded, remaining available for visitors to explore.

From everyone at the Minecraft Forum we are deeply grateful for our communities contributions to the forum over the last decade, big and small. Millions of members have shared tens of millions of posts that have been viewed billions of times, and everyone contributed something to make this forum great. Minecraft Mod creators helped expand the world of Minecraft, support volunteers worked tirelessly to provide access to that world and everyone together turned that world into a community.

Read only mode will be enabled on June 16th, 2019. From this date you will no longer be able to login to the Minecraft Forum and no new content will be created, however all links to the Minecraft Forum will continue to work as-is, all content will remain accessible. This change does not impact the Minecraft Wiki. The Minecraft Wiki will continue as an active website, we have no plans to archive the Minecraft Wiki.

We appreciate that this is a big change and that there will be many questions. I am available in the comments of this news post to answer any questions you may have, and you are welcome to reach out via Private Message if you have any questions you would like to ask privately.

Please use the comments as an opportunity to share your story about what this community has meant to you. We would love to hear about how the forum has impacted you, whether it inspired a passion for creating, helped build friendships or simply provided you somewhere to share your love of the game — any thoughts you may have are welcome.
