A new Open Data for Social Impact Framework

Today, we’re publishing a resource to help nonprofits, multilateral organizations, governments and research institutions around the world put data to work to help address societal issues: the Open Data for Social Impact Framework. This new resource builds on the 10 lessons learned from Microsoft’s Open Data Campaign, and includes practical recommendations on how to apply these lessons to an organization’s data strategy.

At Microsoft, we believe data powers insights that help address critical societal problems. This is why we launched the Open Data Campaign in April 2020, partnering with organizations to better understand the opportunities and challenges they face in applying data strategies to advance their core social missions. Now, having supported 23 collaborations built around open and shared data, we’ve found that, while much of the talk around data focuses on the role it can play in the development of new business solutions, opening up data can also help answer some of the most challenging questions we face today. Questions ranging from, “How do we reduce carbon emissions?” to “How can we build a broader and more inclusive digital workforce?” to “How can we close the broadband gap?” – these can all benefit from collaboration and exploration through an increase in open and shared data.

The Open Data for Social Impact Framework is a tool organizational leaders can use to further understand how best to put data to work to solve important societal challenges. The collaborations we have supported helped us better appreciate both the benefits of data strategies and the challenges organizations face in building them. By compiling what we’ve learned from our Open Data journey and what others have shared along the way, we seek to help organizations think about the various questions and technological elements they will need to explore on their journey. We also share examples of organizations and projects that illustrate both best practices in building data strategies and the positive social impact that open data can help unlock. For instance, the World Health Organization is a case study in the importance of leadership in transforming an organization’s culture to be data-driven, and the Caring for Equality data collaboration in Buenos Aires, Argentina, shows how open data can lead to insights that help address inequality gaps with respect to care-related tasks that constrain women’s economic autonomy. These and other examples featured in the framework provide evidence of the benefits of using open data, but they also highlight a methodology that can be applied in other scenarios.

The framework highlights the challenges organizations can face when it comes to open data. It walks leaders through the following common steps and considerations:

  1. Leadership: Are you ready to put data to work to improve social outcomes?
  2. Opportunity: What are the questions you want to answer with data?
  3. Skills: Do you have the talent needed for data analysis?
  4. Community governance: Have you built trust in your community around the use of data?
  5. Technology and data: What solutions and resources do you need to measure, enable and enhance your impact?

The framework also includes a roadmap for organizations to follow to start using data to address their core social missions, and other important resources to help leaders embrace open data.

One of the key lessons we’ve learned is intrinsic to the framework – the ability to access and use data to improve outcomes involves much more than technological tools and the data itself. It includes having a leadership that is committed to using and publishing more open data, assembling the talent necessary to work with that data, and creating a good governance framework to ensure that data opportunities and data risks are managed.

Open data is important, but it can be challenging for some organizations to realize its benefits and we should all continue to look for ways to make it easier. We believe in the limitless opportunities that opening, sharing and collaborating on data can create to help drive solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Verizon enriches the mobile endpoint with Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams

What you need to know:

  • Verizon is one of the first operators to combine forces with Microsoft to enable wireless subscribers to use their mobile phone number to make and receive calls using Microsoft Teams.

  • With Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams, enterprise customers will experience the full power of Teams using the mobile device’s native dialer.

  • Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams complements Verizon VoIP for Operator Connect, a fixed line solution built on Verizon’s Global SIP network and powered by Microsoft’s Azure for Operators’ Managed Service for Teams Calling.

NEW YORK – Verizon Business today announced Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams, a new service that will integrate a customer’s Verizon Wireless business number with Microsoft Teams and bring enterprise-grade voice quality and policy management to Teams calls to and from mobile devices. Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams gives users the option of placing outbound calls through the Microsoft Teams desktop application, an integrated IP Phone, or directly through the native dialer on their mobile device.

“We continue to see global demand for unified calling platforms to keep distributed workforces connected,” said Sampath Sowmyanarayan, Chief Revenue Officer, Verizon Business. “Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams answers that customer demand and will make an immediate impact on the collaboration industry. Verizon is helping large enterprise customers adapt and succeed in today’s hybrid work environment by delivering a best-in-class suite of professional services spanning voice, security, and Network as a Service solutions to power the mobile workforce.”

By elevating a user’s mobile identity to become a unified calling and collaboration endpoint, Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams empowers customers to easily and quickly apply enterprise policies to mobile numbers, reducing the costs associated with managing mobile and desktop phones and offering a path to consolidating all activity on mobile handsets where appropriate.

Key advantages:

Mobile Manageability: Provides users with a single mobile phone number for business, which can be easily managed by IT administration with enterprise-grade calling policies in Teams

Unified Call Control: Converge voicemail, call history, and presence information across endpoints, and direct call queues to mobile numbers

Network Flexibility: Seamlessly move calls between networks and endpoints, including uplifting calls from the cellular voice network to VoIP data calls with video and screensharing

Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams complements the existing Verizon VoIP for Operator Connect solution for fixed line voice services. The popularity of Teams, combined with the scale and reliability of Verizon’s global network, will provide enterprise customers with a secure, managed multi-device solution that blends connectivity, calling, and administration under one easy-to-use customer interface and calling plan.

“This collaboration with Verizon allows us to combine the power of cloud, cellular and edge to deliver tightly integrated mobile calling and business collaboration workflows that are reliable, secure, device & network agnostic all while being cost-efficient and simple for the customers to manage a single calling offering,” said Martin Lund, CVP of Azure for Operators. “The solution leverages the power of Azure to accelerate the migration of critical workflows to the cloud and benefits from Microsoft’s expertise in providing managed services that enable operators to quickly certify with the Teams Operator Connect program.”

As a certified gold Microsoft partner with more than 15 years of experience delivering VoIP services and 7,000+ business customers with 18M telephone numbers active on Verizon’s VoIP platform, Verizon is uniquely positioned to support organizations of all sizes as they seek to unlock the full potential of Microsoft Teams.

Verizon VoIP for Operator Connect is available today while Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams will be available later in 2022. For more information, visit Microsoft Teams for Collaboration and Communication.

Evolving Microsoft Partner Network programs for partner growth and customer success

The Microsoft Partner Network is comprised of more than 400,000 global organizations and these partners are essential to how Microsoft delivers innovative products and services to customers around the world. This deep relationship between Microsoft and our partners spans more than 30 years, and in that time frame our partners have provided unique solutions across numerous industries, helping countless customers succeed in an ever-changing world. They especially have played a pivotal role in helping businesses adapt amidst the pandemic. As things continue to change and evolve, we are committed to investing in and delivering what partners need to innovate, grow their businesses and deliver on the promise of digital transformation for customers across organizations and industries.

To continue enabling partners — and by extension their customers — for success, we are focused on three major commitment areas:

  • Strengthening our digital capability. We are providing well-defined guidelines and resources for partners across our digital experiences to navigate building solutions more effortlessly, going-to-market, and selling with Microsoft. By aligning partner experiences across the commercial marketplace, Partner Center, and the Microsoft Partner Network, we’re making it easier for everyone to engage and collaborate.
  • Deepening partner technical capabilities. Equipping partners to better meet customer needs by investing in and accelerating our joint capability. We’re supporting partners on their readiness journeys by helping them gain advanced specializations and deep technical training across solution areas including business applications, Azure and security, compliance and identity. We’ve specifically committed to a 250% year-over-year (YOY) increase in spending in this area.
  • Streamlining engagement between Microsoft and our partners. We are sharing more opportunities and enhancing the commercial marketplace as well as Partner Center, making it easier for partners to engage with us and drive profitability. In July 2021, for example, we lowered our marketplace transaction fee from 20% to 3% . Through these reductions, partners can invest even more deeply in their own growth plans.

The next step

Today, as a part of our investment in the cloud as a strategic lever for innovation and growth, and as a reflection of our continued commitment to partners, we are announcing that effective October 2022, we are changing the name of our partner program from “Microsoft Partner Network” to the “Microsoft Cloud Partner Program.”

This announcement is about more than a name; this change better reflects the enormous and ongoing transition of business operations to the cloud, and how Microsoft intends to support partners in the future. It aligns our partners’ go-to-market motions with the way customers buy today.

The Microsoft Cloud Partner Program is for all partners in our ecosystem, whether they build and sell services, software solutions or devices, and is focused on proficiency in six solution areas aligned with the Microsoft Cloud:

  • Data & AI (Azure)
  • Infrastructure (Azure)
  • Digital & App Innovation (Azure)
  • Business Applications
  • Modern Work
  • Security

We’re also evolving the way we categorize partner capability and measure success. To help customers better understand a partner’s capabilities, we’re offering two qualifying levels:

  • The solutions partner level is a designation that is based on meeting specific requirements across what we call the partner capability score (see below) for each solution area.
  • Specializations and expert programs will give solutions partners a way to differentiate their organizations and demonstrate deep technical expertise and experience in specific technical scenarios under each solution area.

These two designations clearly and immediately validate a partner’s capability to meet specific and evolving customer requirements and give customers an easier way to identify partners with technical capabilities, knowledge and a history of delivering innovative solutions in specific areas. They also provide a road map for helping build partner capability and guiding the way we invest in partners.

Investment in partner growth and success requires a robust, objective measurement of progress against a partner’s chosen solution areas. As noted above, to quantify that progress, we’ve developed the partner capability score, a holistic framework for measuring partner performance, skilling and customer success. The partner capability score evaluates a partner based on their certifications, added customers, successful deployments and overall growth.

To attain a solutions partner designation, partners will need to earn a partner capability score of at least 70 points (out of an available 100 points) across the four measurement areas. Starting today, all partners can access their dashboard in the Partner Center to see their progress toward a solutions partner designation.

Time to transition

We know change can take time, so we’re approaching the Microsoft Cloud Partner Program launch with considerable support for our partners, as well as ample time for them to adjust. The full timeline of changes can be found at this link.

Beyond gaining access to the previously mentioned dashboard, there are no immediate changes for partners. And prior to October 2022, there will be no impact to partners’ business or program status — including anniversary dates — and no reduction in benefits.

In fact, we are investing more in our benefits program to ensure that every partner has a chance to participate in the opportunity to grow and accelerate. We’re updating benefits to ensure that:

  • Partners will be able to renew the benefits they’re currently using, while also taking advantage of new benefits packages customized to meet their unique needs based on their business focus.
  • Partners will continue to receive internal use rights licenses (IURs), including on-premises licenses, cloud service subscriptions and Azure credits, although IURs will be now called “Product Benefits.”
  • No partner’s incentive eligibility will change in the 2023 investments and incentives program year, which runs from October 2022 to September 2023.

During this time, we’ll also continue to recognize partner commitment and growth with programmatic incentives as part of our Microsoft Commercial Incentives program.

Accelerating partner growth

Customer needs are constantly evolving, which is why we are announcing this evolution now and preparing for the changes it will bring.

We’re excited to take this next step in the evolution of our ecosystem — putting customer value at the center of our continued partner investment. Visit the Microsoft partner website for more details about the announcement and what our partners and customers can expect.

Creating an accessible, equitable and prosperous Washington state

When the final gavel came down on the 2022 Washington legislative session, lawmakers had made significant progress on issues vital to Washington’s future, taking the steps to satisfy our state’s immediate needs due to the pandemic while also dedicating efforts to long-term and foundational actions critical for Washington’s ongoing health and resilience. Lawmakers made significant investments in transportation, housing and education, but beyond the absolute size of those investments, they tackled these problems in new and innovative ways.

As the session began, Microsoft detailed its priorities for the 2022 legislative session. Two months later, we would like to highlight some of the significant actions taken on a number of these priorities, and how legislators’ actions represent an innovative, future-oriented perspective.

The commitment to make significant, additional investments in the state’s transportation infrastructure is a prime example. Included in the 16-year, nearly $17 billion transportation package was important funding to move forward with development of high-speed rail in the Cascadia region. There is $4 million to support continued planning for the system, including key issues like financing, governance and public engagement. There is also another $150 million to provide the state’s match to compete for federal funding intended to advance high-speed ground transportation projects such as Cascadia. This project will be a game-changer for generations to come, and Microsoft continues to be a strong proponent of the high-speed rail opportunity. We thank Senator Marko Liias for his leadership in championing the project in the legislature and Governor Inslee for his long-term support.

These investments will help move the high-speed rail concept forward from planning to a project development phase. The ability to reduce travel times between Vancouver, BC, Seattle and Portland will enable increased collaboration and innovation, expand job prospects, support access to more affordable housing, provide a climate-friendlier transportation alternative, and position the Pacific Northwest to assume a more prominent position in the global economy.

Transportation infrastructure has always been critical for economic growth and quality of life, and the rest of the package provides substantial funding to address safety, maintenance, and repair of our existing facilities, as well as important projects around the state. It reflects a lower-emissions vision of our transportation system, with significant new funding for transit services, ferries, busses, and bicycle and pedestrian trails. In 2021, Microsoft supported the Climate Commitment Act, which established a cap on carbon emissions and a revenue source for clean transportation. The resulting transportation plan utilizes those funds and, in so doing, realizes that vision for the first time and helps ensure that we can make progress with our sustainability and transportation goals through this meaningful approach.

Taken together, these crucial building blocks will pay many dividends: enabling workers to reach their jobs more easily; facilitating movement of materials and products around the region and across the state; and reducing congestion and the excess emissions it creates. Thank you to Transportation Committee Chairs Representative Jake Fey and Senator Marko Liias for their terrific leadership in assembling this groundbreaking package.

Just as transportation funding provided a major win for the people of Washington, we can also point to the legislature’s significant investments in addressing the state’s ongoing housing affordability and homelessness crises. Lawmakers took advantage of a healthy state budget and a strong revenue forecast to take bold action and set us on a course toward a future in which more people in our community have a stable place to call home.

The legislature committed more than $500 million in the capital budget to help reduce homelessness and provide affordable housing, including investments to rapidly acquire housing and shelter facilities, expand the state’s Housing Trust Fund, create crisis stabilization facilities and integrate housing and support services. Additionally, more than $200 million was appropriated in the supplemental operating budget for the remainder of this biennium to fund additional outreach and services to those experiencing chronic homelessness. This combination of facilities and services is critically important, as it enhances the prospects for successfully helping those experiencing chronic homelessness.

While the state is providing new resources, local initiatives are also underway to help solve the problem. Microsoft joined other business, government and community leaders in recognizing that a full return to a healthier economy and community can’t be achieved while so many of our neighbors are unhoused. As a part of the House Washington coalition, we urged lawmakers to prioritize affordable housing during the legislative session.

Microsoft also joined the Ballmer Group, Amazon, Starbucks and other local public, private and philanthropic partners to provide $10 million in seed funding for a new regional initiative called Partnership for Zero. This initiative will support the King County Regional Homelessness Authority in its efforts to dramatically reduce unsheltered homelessness in Seattle and King County. Innovative partnerships like this show our region’s ability to unite around shared goals. By continuing to work together, we can make housing more affordable and accessible for everyone, including those currently living in unsheltered or unsafe conditions.

These partnerships are all steps in the company’s ongoing commitment to finding workable affordable housing solutions, a commitment that includes Microsoft’s $750M Affordable Housing Initiative. The Initiative has already allocated $583 million towards the preservation and creation of approximately 9,200 housing units in the Puget Sound region.

The legislature also made investments in education to create greater opportunities for students and jobseekers. Thanks to the leadership of House College and Workforce Development Committee Chair Representative Vandana Slatter, the legislature made college more affordable and accessible by providing bridge grants to eligible Washington College Grant recipients to cover expenses beyond tuition and fees, such as transportation and books. They revised provisions of the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship to make it an option for more students, and provided state matching funds for these scholarships and the program’s Rural Jobs Initiative. Finally, the legislature increased capacity for high-demand degrees in fields like cybersecurity and computer science for students throughout the state. Taken together, all these moves help more Washington students acquire the skills they need for rewarding careers with Washington employers.

The 2022 legislative session was pivotal in Washington state’s ongoing effort to create a more accessible, equitable and prosperous region for everyone who lives here. Microsoft will continue working with our elected leaders and other stakeholders on these and other pressing needs, like the creation of a workable data privacy statute that provides strong protections to consumers while not stifling innovation by local employers.

Washington is poised for a bright future, but we must continue working together to ensure that all Washingtonians benefit from the prosperity that our state achieves. We look forward to remaining an active contributor in that process.

Microsoft announces new research and technology to make hybrid work work

Second annual Microsoft Work Trend Index report finds employees have a new “worth it” equation, and there’s no going back

REDMOND, Wash. — March 16, 2022 — On Wednesday, Microsoft Corp. released its second annual Work Trend Index report, “Great Expectations: Making Hybrid Work Work.” The company also announced new features across Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365, Surface Hub and Microsoft Viva to empower hybrid work and address employees’ new expectations for the workplace.

After sitting on the cusp of hybrid work for more than a year, many companies are at a long-awaited inflection point: the lived experience of hybrid work.

One thing from the research is clear: We are not the same people who went home to work in early 2020. The past two years have left a lasting imprint, fundamentally changing how people define the role of work in their lives. The challenge ahead for every organization is to meet employees’ great new expectations head on while balancing business outcomes in an unpredictable economy.

To help leaders navigate the shift, the 2022 Work Trend Index outlines five urgent trends from an external study of 31,000 people in 31 countries along with an analysis of trillions of productivity signals in Microsoft 365 and labor trends on LinkedIn:

  1. Employees have a new “worth it” equation. Fifty-three percent of employees say they’re more likely to prioritize their health and well-being over work than they were before the pandemic. And the Great Reshuffle isn’t over: Fifty-two percent of Generation Z and millennials are likely to consider changing employers in the year ahead, up 3% year over year.
  2. Managers feel wedged between leadership and employee Fifty percent of leaders say their companies are planning a return to full-time in-person work in the year ahead. Fifty-four percent of managers say leadership at their companies is out of touch with employee expectations, and 74% of managers say they don’t have the influence or resources to drive change for their teams.
  3. Leaders need to make the office worth the commute. Thirty-eight percent of hybrid employees say their biggest challenge is knowing when and why to come into the office, yet only 28% of leaders have created team agreements to define these new norms.
  4. Flexible work doesn’t have to mean “always on.” After two years, weekly meeting time for the average Teams user is up 252%, and chats sent per person each week is up 32% — and still climbing. While workday span has increased by 46 minutes, after-hours and weekend work are up 28% and 14%, respectively.
  5. Rebuilding social capital looks different in a hybrid world. With 51% of hybrid workers considering a shift to full remote work in the year ahead, companies cannot rely solely on the office to recoup the social capital we’ve lost over the past two years. Forty-three percent of leaders say relationship-building is the greatest challenge of having employees work in a hybrid or remote environment.

“There’s no erasing the lived experience and lasting impact of the past two years, as flexibility and well-being have become non-negotiables for employees,” said Jared Spataro, corporate vice president, Modern Work, Microsoft. “By embracing and adapting to these new expectations, organizations can set their people and their business up for long-term success.”

As the company marks five years since the launch of Teams, more than 270 million people rely on Teams for hybrid work.

Making hybrid work work for everyone will require intentional leadership around how, when and where to work — and technology has a key role to play. Today the company is introducing new product innovation designed to improve the hybrid work experience.

  • Available in public preview at the end of the month, Teams Connect shared channels enable collaboration with people inside and outside the organization from a shared workspace.
  • To bridge the gap between digital and physical workspaces, a new meeting layout for Teams Rooms, front row, is now available in preview.
  • The new AI-powered Microsoft Surface Hub 2 Smart Camera uses automatic framing technology to dynamically adjust your Teams video feed to provide remote team members with a dynamic view of in-room interactions.
  • New touch-enabled display solutions for Teams Rooms from Neat and Yealink are in the process of being certified for Teams Rooms on Android. These devices combine audio, video, touch display and compute in a single unit — allowing easy deployment and enhanced collaboration experiences.
  • The language interpretation feature in Teams enables live interpreters to convert what the speaker says into another language in near real time. The meeting organizer can assign interpreters and select up to 16 source and target language combinations, while attendees will hear the translation.
  • Microsoft Whiteboard in Teams offers a rich set of new capabilities that bring visual collaboration to life, including collaboration cursors, more than 50 new templates, contextual reactions, and the ability to open existing boards and collaborate with external colleagues in Teams meetings.

Microsoft expands healthcare cloud strategy with new solutions and capabilities across data, AI and clinician experiences

Delivers industry’s first generally available solution that ingests, manages and transforms a combination of clinical, imaging and MedTech data

REDMOND, Wash. — March 15, 2022 — On Tuesday, Microsoft Corp. announced advancements in cloud technologies for healthcare and life sciences with the general availability of Azure Health Data Services and updates to Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare. Combined with the recent close of its acquisition of Nuance Communications, Microsoft is uniquely positioned to amplify an organization’s ability to help others by leveraging trusted AI to address the biggest challenges transforming the future of healthcare for all.

The health industry has undergone a rapid digital transformation over the past two years. Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare launched in September 2020 to address the health industry’s challenges — from reducing clinician burnout, delivering more personalized experiences for patients, and enabling health data interoperability. With today’s announcements, Microsoft continues to deliver on its healthcare strategy with solutions that help enhance patient engagement and clinician experiences, empower health team collaboration, and improve clinical and operational insights. Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare threads together innovative solutions from across the company to deliver a powerful, integrated, comprehensive cloud offering.

“The past two years have starkly revealed the pressing challenges facing healthcare and life sciences across the globe,” said Tom McGuinness, corporate vice president, Global Healthcare & Life Sciences, Microsoft. “At a time when healthcare systems are strained to capacity and researchers are racing against the clock, we believe that data and AI hold the keys to a new world of health and discovery for patients, clinicians, researchers and administrators. Microsoft is bringing together the solutions the industry needs in a cohesive way.”

Azure Health Data Services: Interoperability to drive better patient outcomes and clinical advances

The health industry generates an overwhelming amount of data, much of which is unstructured and inaccessible. Oftentimes this data sits in silos and is not used to its full potential. Within that data lies the power to deliver better patient care and outcomes, further clinical advances, and accelerate research breakthroughs. The key to unlocking the data is interoperability across the entire health ecosystem. Microsoft took the first step to address health data interoperability with Azure API for FHIR in 2019. Today the company revealed the next evolution of that journey — announcing general availability of Azure Health Data Services.

Azure Health Data Services is purpose-built for protected health information (PHI) and brings together diverse datasets — like clinical, imaging and streaming data from medical devices — in the cloud using global interoperability standards of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) and Digital Imaging Communications in Medicine (DICOM). Azure Health Data Services is the only generally available solution of its kind to ingest, manage and transform a combination of clinical, imaging and medtech data. While other solutions exist for clinical and imaging data, Azure Health Data Services provides the most holistic view of the patient by unifying all three types of health data.

With Azure Health Data Services, metadata from medical images and medical devices can be read alongside clinical information, yielding more powerful results when a provider or researcher searches and queries patient information. The service also features a suite of tools that supports the de-identification and connection of data for compute, analytics and more — in a way that enables a meaningful impact on medicine and patient care. Azure Health Data Services includes the following features:

  • Support for secure PHI exchange in the cloud for structured, unstructured, imaging and medtech data using global interoperability standards like FHIR and DICOM.
  • A suite of healthcare APIs that securely brings health data to the cloud and persists it within a compliance boundary in Azure.
  • The ability to enable management, de-identification, event notification and transformation of data for downstream use.
  • Connection of PHI datato powerful technology in the Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare ecosystem, such as Synapse for deep analytics and AI development, Power BI for data visualization, or Microsoft Teams and Dynamics 365 for care team collaboration and improving patient engagement.

“There are several areas where cloud technology like Azure Health Data Services can help enhance healthcare. I believe it will play a critical role between various systems, allowing us to take data from health records and other data sources and combine it together in a centralized place where it can be used to inform and deliver patient-centric care,” said Matthew Kull, chief information officer, Cleveland Clinic. “It also can enable real-time complex deep learning — by normalizing data from different systems in a way that allows complex algorithmic analyses to occur via AI or ML — and integrate research-based insights back into a clinical workflow.”

The Azure Health Data Services are part of Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare, which is built for enterprise scale with Azure’s foundation of trust and security, providing all the benefits of Microsoft’s global footprint and commitment to open interoperability standards. Azure Health Data Services supports an organization’s HIPAA compliance, and data is managed according to applicable regulations, with certifications for ISO, HITRUST, FedRAMP and SOC.

Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare: Enhancing patient experiences and health team collaboration

Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare provides trusted and integrated capabilities that make it easier for organizations to create personalized patient experiences, give health teams connected collaboration tools, and adopt data standards important to healthcare.

Today, Microsoft announced several updates and new features that further strengthen Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare. The improvements are designed to transform the healthcare journey, using AI to give full visibility into data, reduce provider administrative burden, boost productivity for care teams on the frontline, increase workflow automation that can improve quality of care, reduce clinician burnout, and deliver better care faster and at a lower cost. New features that enhance patient and clinician experiences include:

  • New features in Microsoft Teams for virtual appointments, including the ability for patients to request on-demand appointments with their provider and new analytics capabilities that give providers key insights into the performance of virtual appointments. Teams also includes a new device tester that lets patients test their hardware settings before their virtual appointment, allowing the patient and provider to focus on the appointment instead of managing tech challenges. Learn more about additional features in Teams.
  • Enhanced clinical workflow integrations in Teams, including the general availability of the Microsoft Teams EHR connector for Cerner (a Cerner-validated application), which enables clinicians to launch virtual appointments and consult with other providers in Teams directly from their health record system. Additionally, the Teladoc app for Teams is now generally available, which brings the Teladoc Health Solo platform directly into Teams and makes it easier for healthcare workers to manage patient engagement across the care continuum.
  • Enhancements to Azure Health Bot templates, enabling organizations to quickly develop scenarios for self-reporting quality-of-life measurements and chronic condition management through virtual agents.
  • Updates to the Patient View, which provides insights into demographic and clinical patient information. This update enables integration to Power Apps — allowing providers to easily customize the view for their own care scenarios.
  • A preview of the new Patient Insights capability, which enable care managers, patient representatives, outreach specialists and population health analysts to efficiently deliver and capture useful patient insights. Analytics from patient insights can potentially help organizations improve clinical processes and care management experiences.

Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare: Improving clinical and operational insights

Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare also introduces new features that improve clinical and operational insights, such as Text Analytics for health structuring to FHIR. Text Analytics for health enables healthcare organization to process and extract insights from unstructured medical data. This new feature transforms unstructured clinical documents into FHIR resource bundles to accelerate insights and supercharge interoperability. Microsoft is the first cloud provider to allow customers to formalize their natural language processing output as bundles of interconnected hierarchical FHIR resources, in adherence with the U.S. Core standards.

Celebrating 5 years of Microsoft Teams

Five years ago, today – March 14, 2017 – marked an exciting milestone for our customers, partners, and employees with the general availability of Microsoft Teams. We started with a unique point-of-view learning from Microsoft’s experience building communication and collaboration tools and from customer feedback on our products and those across the industry. Brian MacDonald and a small, passionate team started with an internal hackathon project and created a new application building on cloud services across Microsoft. As the project evolved to where groups could use it all day long for their work, the team iterated quickly based on feedback – first from inside Microsoft and then with customers and partners in 2016. Every hour around the world data and insights from customers of all sizes flowed into the product development team – all using channels, meetings, and documents in Teams of course – to help us drive to make the product better. And still does to this day. Teams transformed how we work to help you transform how you work.

Even in the first few months after release, it was clear the unique combination of async and sync collaboration in a single product was resonating. Over twenty million people used Microsoft Teams daily in the first two years, which was unprecedented for business software at the time. I was excited about Brian’s vision and partnered with him and the Teams leaders closely during this intense start-up phase. We worked to blend communications and content collaboration more seamlessly than ever before. We exposed an application model for partners to build workflows and solutions where users were spending time to simplify business processes. We embraced the community who had come with us to the cloud in Microsoft 365 as Teams became the hero application connecting the Microsoft Cloud. When Brian announced his retirement in January 2020, I was flattered to take on leadership for Microsoft Teams and evolve the communications and content management capabilities in Teams + SharePoint together into an even better platform for work. The Teams leadership has scaled well, and Brian continues to be a source of numerous great product ideas.

In March 2020, we all faced the crisis of a global pandemic. Across Microsoft, we were humbled by the challenges and uncertainty. We moved as fast – scaling to millions of cores from Azure to support the Teams services, adding dozens of features to improve our meetings experiences, and iterating with numerous stakeholders on our guidance for remote work. In the first three months after COVID-19, the Teams product team met with over 900 customers to hear their experiences and feedback. The team worked tirelessly on security, reliability, scalability, performance, and functionality. It has been a privilege in an unexpected time for the world to deliver a solution that would help schools, hospitals, governments, businesses, and more continue their mission at a vital time. The work customers did to support their colleagues and organizations and our product team did to support them inspires me to be curious, learn, and make the experience even better every day. During this time, Microsoft Teams grew 10X and we recently announced we have reached 270 million monthly active users. Consistent with Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and organization on the planet, we recently introduced tailored versions of Microsoft Teams for personal use with Windows 11 and for very small businesses with Teams Essentials. Thank you for the bet you made on us during this critical period. We don’t take it for granted. I am incredibly excited about the pipeline we have for Microsoft Teams – from simplicity and performance improvements to new ways to work across organizations with Teams Connect to innovative new experience built on Teams like Microsoft Viva and Microsoft Mesh and much more. Stay tuned. The best is yet to come.

I want to close with a special thank you and call-to-action to our community – spanning customers, partners, and MVPs. You have inspired us to do our best work. Your feedback shapes our priorities – from meeting layouts to platform features to admin controls and more – in every part and every level of the Microsoft Teams organization. So today, as we celebrate the 5th anniversary of the general availability of Microsoft Teams, we want to pause and say, “Thank you!”. You have bet your productivity, organizations, and careers on us – and we’re humbled by this. Together, as I’ve said many times before, you network and learn from each other as we strive to make Microsoft 365 the best community in technology. Thank you for betting on us and your continued feedback and support of each other.
