At CES 2019, ASUS unveils new ZenBooks, StudioBook, 3 additions to the VivoBook family and gaming laptops

At CES 2019, ASUS unveiled two new ZenBooks, a StudioBook and three additions to the VivoBook family – as well as the latest from the Republic of Gamers and TUF lines.

ZenBook S13

The ZenBook S13 (UX392) is an ultrabook that combines powerful performance and portability in a small chassis. The 13.9-inch Full HD display is surrounded by ASUS’ most impressive NanoEdge display to date – an ultra-thin 4-sided bezel, providing the industry’s biggest screen-to-body ratio at 97 percent. The thinnest laptop at 12.9 mm with discrete graphics (provided by the NVIDIA GeForce MX150) and the latest quad-core processor, the Intel Core i7 Whiskey Lake CPU, the ZenBook S13 pushes the boundaries for what’s possible inside a 13-inch laptop. It can deftly tackle video encoding; or aggressive multitasking, like processing photos while switching between productivity apps, emails and web browsing. There’s ample space with 1 TB of PCIe x4 storage, and the 50Wh battery is enough to last a full day. While everything inside is packed in tightly, nothing about it feels cramped. The backlit keyboard spans almost the full width of the laptop. Underneath is a roomy trackpad with an integrated fingerprint sensor that makes for quick and convenient login via Windows Hello.

Squeezing more components into the same package as the first ZenBook S13 required a bit of ingenuity from ASUS’ engineering team, which also succeeded in meeting the military-grade MIL-STD-810G durability standard. To ensure no space was wasted, the metal chassis is CNC-milled from a block of aluminum, allowing the lid to be carved out, complete with the complex cuts surrounding the keyboard, without creating any unnecessary gaps.

ZenBook 14

The ZenBook 14 (UX431) balances value and performance to deliver a sleek, more-affordable ultrabook that doesn’t compromise on power. Lifting the lid reveals a 14-inch glass panel with a full HD 1920×1080 resolution. This premium design unit is packed full of the latest technology, including Intel 8th Generation Core processors, NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics and the latest connectivity options. These days, 8 GB of system memory is a common luxury for mobile multi-tasking, but the UX431 is available with up to 16 GB of RAM to ensure seamless switching between tasks. On top of that, up to 1 TB of PCIe-attached solid-state storage gives you a powerful combination of low latency and high capacity. You’ll have a hard time filling such a spacious drive, and everything you install will launch lightning fast.

When you want to concentrate on the task at hand or just need a boost from some music while you work, you can do it with the ZenBook 14’s four speakers. In addition to the pair of upward firing speakers flanking the keyboard, there are two more speakers on the underside of the laptop, and any muffling from the desk is reduced thanks to the ErgoLift hinge. Powered by a Smart Amplifier, the Harmon Kardon-certified setup employs advanced signal processing to deliver wide frequency response, powerful bass, and especially crisp sound. When the ZenBook 14 becomes available, it’ll start at $749.

Both the ZenBook 14 and ZenBook S13 come in Utopia Blue.

ASUS StudioBook S

Consumers will also see the debut of the ASUS StudioBook S (W700), a new breed of workstation to support the demands of the modern content creator. Built based on feedback directly from industry professionals, StudioBook S packs a 17-inch display into a compact 15-inch body, and weighs in at just five pounds. With an Intel Xeon processor and NVIDIA Quadro P3200 graphics, it’s capable of handling a variety of complex workloads while balancing day-to-day tasks.

The bezels on either side measure just 5.3 mm, resulting in a truly expansive display that feels more like a desktop monitor. The panel itself covers 97 percent of the DCI-P3 color space, which is much wider than the sRGB color gamut used by typical PCs, so it’s capable of displaying a broader range of colors. It’s Pantone Validated to ensure the colors seen on the screen are accurate, too. Each panel is factory-calibrated to delta E < 2 before it ships out, which matches the spec for ASUS’ ProArt monitors and actually exceeds the Pantone requirement. Wide 178-degree viewing angles ensure colors stay vivid and bright, and the 180-degree hinge enables a wider range of positions for the display, which can be useful when showing work to clients and collaborating on projects with coworkers.

VivoBook 14

ASUS also introduced the world to the 14-inch VivoBook 14 (X412) and the 15.6-inch VivoBook 15 (X512).

All the new models feature frameless NanoEdge displays with at least an up to 88 percent screen-to-body ratio for immersive viewing. The slim bezel allows a large display to fit into a smaller chassis, effectively reducing the laptop footprint for a more compact and portable machine. These laptops are powered by up to an 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with up to NVIDIA GeForce MX130 discrete graphics, and include the ErgoLift hinge that tilts the keyboard to replicate the feel of a desktop keyboard for a more comfortable typing experience.

The VivoBooks also support Intel Optane memory, which intelligently accelerates hard disk performance, speeds up multitasking and app-loading times, and reduces boot-up and resume times.

In addition, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi connections provide speeds of up to 867Mbps — six times faster [1] than 802.11n — for seamless video-streaming, and smooth web-surfing. VivoBook also features Bluetooth 4.2.

VivoBook 14 and VivoBook 15 are available in different finishes to suit your style. Transparent Silver provides a sleek and sophisticated look, or go for Slate Grey for a more understated approach. Set the trend with the uniquely iridescent Peacock Blue: a unique option that changes color when you look at it from different angles. If you really want to stand out, there’s Coral Crush with its bright finish.

The new VivoBook 14 features the new NumberPad — a novel solution to the lack of a dedicated numeric keypad on small laptops. In normal use, NumberPad is a large glass-covered Windows Precision Touchpad with multi-gesture support. A tap of the NumberPad icon on the touchpad turns it into an LED-illuminated keypad with a familiar layout for easy data entry.

An optional fingerprint sensor built into the touchpad provides one-touch access with Windows Hello, so logging in has never been easier or more secure. There’s also a full-size backlit keyboard that’s perfect for working in dim environments.

But that’s not all – ASUS also revealed several gaming updates at CES.

ROG Mothership

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) announced the latest additions to the ROG arsenal of the world’s best gaming gear, including the all-new, ultra-versatile ROG Mothership (GZ700), a 17.3-inch Full HD detachable gaming laptop equipped with up to a factory-overclocked Intel Core i9 processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card; and the ROG Zephyrus S (GX701) below, the world’s slimmest gaming laptop with an up to 8th Gen Intel Core processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 with Max-Q Design graphics.

ROG Zephyrus S

ROG has reimagined the form factor of gaming laptops with ROG Mothership, moving from a design that traditionally sits flat to one that stands tall to draw more air into its advanced cooling system. Its keyboard detaches and folds to fit different scenarios, giving you the freedom to find the perfect position. The innovative design also leaves enough room to put all the speakers right below the screen.

Other products on display at the ROG Media Showroom include a lineup of refreshed Windows 10 gaming laptops — Zephyrus S (GX531GX/GW/GV), SCAR II, Hero II, G703 and GX701 — that now come equipped with NVIDIA GeForce 20 series graphics cards [2]. The ROG Huracan G21CX has also been upgraded with a new CPU and GPU to improve its power and outperform the competition.

TUF Gaming FX705DY

Gaming can be an expensive hobby, but you don’t need to drop thousands of dollars on a laptop to play your favorite titles. With the right mix of components, affordable gaming laptops – such as ASUS’ new TUF Gaming FX505DY and TUF Gaming FX705DY laptops – can add up to more than the sum of their parts.

AMD’s Ryzen processors have taken desktops by storm and TUF Gaming laptops lead the deployment of the newest version. Otherwise known as Picasso, this 2nd Gen Ryzen Mobile APU is built with industry-leading 12nm technology. The Ryzen 5 3550H chip powering the FX505DY and FX705DY boasts four cores and eight threads that deliver capable performance for popular games and everyday work. Multithreaded performance is particularly strong, yet the processor fits into a 35W power envelope that doesn’t compromise battery life.

The TUF Gaming AMD Editions pair Picasso with up to 32GB of RAM, so they’re primed for productive multitasking and light content creation. A range of storage options makes it easy to tailor to your needs and budget, though every configuration mixes faster solid state storage with a higher-capacity hard drive to offer speed where you need it, alongside plenty of room for larger game libraries.

Slim bezels frame the NanoEdge screens to further enhance immersion and shrink the overall footprint, while reinforced bodies help the machines survive daily wear and tear. Intelligently specced and carefully built, these AMD Editions balance performance and affordability to provide a better experience in your favorite games.

Find out more about all these releases at ASUS and the introduction page for the new ROG product line.

CINCINNATI and REDMOND, Wash. — January 7, 2019 — The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced a collaboration to redefine the customer experience using Kroger Technology products powered by Microsoft Azure, the retailer’s preferred cloud platform for Retail as a Service (RaaS). Through this innovative partnership, Kroger will pilot a connected store experience and together with Microsoft, jointly market a commercial RaaS product to the industry.

Kroger logoMicrosoft logo

“Kroger is building a seamless ecosystem driven by data and technology to provide our customers with personalized food inspiration. We are identifying partners through Restock Kroger who will help us reinvent the customer experience and create new profit streams that will also accelerate our core business growth. We are excited to collaborate with Microsoft to redefine grocery retail,” said Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO.

“Our partnership brings together Kroger’s world-class expertise in the grocery industry with the power of Azure and Azure AI,” said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. “Together, we will redefine the shopping experience for millions of customers at both Kroger and other retailers around the world, setting a new standard for innovation in the industry.”

Connected Store Experience Pilot

The Kroger Technology team has developed a smart technology system, powered by Microsoft Azure and connected by IoT sensors, to transform two pilot stores located in Monroe, Ohio and Redmond, Washington, respectively, near each company’s headquarters. The pilot stores will leverage RaaS, establishing a way to quickly add innovations to create new customer experiences, enable higher levels of personalization through insights and enhance store associate productivity.

Transformative customer experiences
By using Microsoft Azure to store and process the data generated in stores, near the smart shelves and on Kroger’s app, the digital stores will introduce never-before-seen shopping experiences, including the latest generation of EDGE™ Shelf (Enhanced Display for Grocery Environment), a shelving system that uses digital displays, instead of traditional paper tags, to indicate everything from prices and promotions to nutritional and dietary information. Using Microsoft Azure AI, EDGE Shelf will connect with Kroger’s Scan, Bag, Go®, creating a unique guided shopping experience for customers.

Greater employee insight and productivity
For store associates, a pick-to-light productivity solution can reduce the time it takes to fulfill curbside pickup orders by using visual cues to help them quickly find items. Additionally, solutions like Microsoft Azure-powered video analytics will help store associates identify and address out-of-stocks to ensure customers can locate products on their shopping list.

In addition to transforming the customer experience and enhancing productivity for associates, the EDGE Shelf will enable Kroger to generate new revenue by selling digital advertising space to consumer packaged goods (CPGs) brands. Using video analytics, personalized offers and advertisements can be presented based on customer demographics.

The new pilot will guide expansion plans in 2019 and beyond.

Retail as a Service Commercial Product

The introduction of the commercial RaaS product, a Kroger solution powered by Microsoft Azure, offers a suite of capabilities to support KPIs and merchandising plans, collect customer insights, enhance employee productivity, improve out-of-stocks, better the customer experience, and allow for hyper personalization using proprietary technology including the EDGE Shelf.

The RaaS product is enablement software built by a retailer for retailers, supporting modern retail experiences and harmonizing customers’ digital and physical shopping experiences. The rapid transformation platform enables retailers to prioritize its most desired initiatives. Future commercial products include: Scan, Bag, Go; Virtual Store Manager; sensor network; and connectors to corporate systems like point-of-sale, and inventory management, tag and merchandising systems. Microsoft and Kroger will jointly bring the RaaS solution to market.

The first RaaS product offerings, EDGE Shelf, guided shopping, personalized ads and pick-to-light, will be available to view at the NRF 2019: Retail’s Big Show in New York in the Microsoft booth (#3301). Mr. McMullen will deliver a keynote at the event, sharing details about the partnership and providing his outlook on the grocery retail industry, at 9:45 a.m. EST on January 13.

How Narayana Health uses data analytics and AI to provide affordable, high-quality healthcare

Making healthcare affordable for patients

The ability to visualize data from across the group opened new avenues to ensure patients get the best care possible at the most affordable prices. The team at Narayana Health is now unlocking insights from historic data as well as data generated in real-time to optimize costs from the perspective of both patients and business goals.

Faster lab turn-around times: One team looked at how they could minimize the visits a patient has to make to the hospital by ensuring they get their lab test reports on the same day. Using Power BI, they were able to compare the performance of different labs across the network and identify roadblocks as well as best practices. They implemented changes in the clinical processes at one of the units and noticed a 60 percent improvement and close to 95 percent of lab tests were turned around in less than two hours. In many cases, this meant that a patient could consult a doctor, get tests done, and get diagnosis done by the doctor on the same day.

Monitoring consumables and antibiotic use: A Power BI dashboard provides insights about the consumables used by doctors for different surgeries. Thanks to this, the management team has been able to establish an average of consumables used for any kind of surgery and can quickly identify trends and cases of even slightly higher usage, which can impact the cost incurred to the patient.

Another parameter monitored is the administration of antibiotics by doctors. This is an important aspect of patient care to ensure that the antibiotics usage is within the limits prescribed by the internal policy at the hospital, which in turn is aligned to WHO standard recommendations. With this, they can quickly identify any aberration and rectify it across the group.

Predicting blood requirement: Thanks to data being available in the system in real-time, hospitals are now able to predict blood requirements on any given day. This has led to optimal stocking and reducing wastage of blood, which is a critical and scarce component.

Reducing the time spent by patients in the ICU: Narayana Health runs one of the world’s busiest cardiac programs and the world’s largest pediatric cardiac care facility. A constant challenge at the organization is to optimize throughput to match the demand of patients with the limited manpower, assets, and capacity available. With real-time analytics they can monitor patients in the ICU and are able to identify any outliers, who have a longer than average duration of stay for any given surgery. This also allows them to identify any bottlenecks and reduce the patient wait time and stay at the hospital.

Better prediction of surgery costs: All this data analysis eventually circles back to Narayana Health’s core mission of providing affordable, high-tech healthcare. Before the implementation of data analytics, the quotes were updated periodically. Now, they can formulate a very narrow band of the expected cost of a treatment, based on multi-year data of the relevant procedures and costs.

5 tech decisions CEOs need to make in 2019

By Ralph Haupter, President, Microsoft Asia. This article was originally posted on LinkedIn.

As I look out at 2019, there’s certainly plenty to be optimistic about – revolutionary new technologies are fueling the 4th Industrial Revolution and positively impacting how we work, live, connect and play.

It’s exciting to see technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Mixed Reality (MR) and the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming key drivers for digital transformation and making a positive and lasting impact on our society and environment. In Australia, for example, the Department of Primary Industry and Resources for the Northern Territory Government is using AI and IoT to identify and analyze hundreds of precious fish species in one of Australia’s largest harbors. This massive undertaking will ensure fisheries’ resources are sustainably-managed, protected and developed for future generations.

In Australia, AI now automates the laborious process of counting local fish stock (Click here to read more)

Although there is good reason to be generally optimistic about economic and societal prospects for 2019, some business leaders have also confided in me that they see significant challenges ahead.

In particular, many industries are being disrupted, sometimes even revolutionized, by the adoption of digital technologies and processes, often bringing with them new and more agile competitive entrants to their industry.

How should established industry participants respond to these kinds of disruptive challenges?

In late 2018, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, introduced the concept of “tech intensity”, where organizations can embark on accelerated digital transformation journeys by adopting technologies much faster than before and focusing on building their own digital capabilities.

In 2019, to help organizations embrace and drive “tech intensity”, here are five technology decisions that Asian CEOs should make as we enter the new year:

1. Modernize your data strategy: If we compare a digital organization to the human body, then data is the blood that provides nourishment and allows it to grow.

In large organizations across Asia Pacific, the challenge is often not about the availability of data, but the vast effort needed to manage the almost-uncontrollable growth of the organization’s data estate. For example, banks today need to track and analyze tremendous amount of unstructured data coming in from new channels such as connected devices, new customer touchpoints and 3rd party data flows. They also need to factor in additional resources to cope with increasing regulatory and compliance requirements.

CEOs need to prioritize the redefinition of their organization’s entire data strategy, from creating a secure platform to managing and harnessing data to creating a corporate culture where the workforce embraces data in their daily work. It is only with a sound data strategy that organizations can truly optimize new digital transformation technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence.

2. Accelerate full cloud adoption: There was a time, not that long ago, when CEOs would ask me: “Should we move our data to the cloud?”. Now, increasingly, they are asking: “Can we afford not to?” The question is not just one of economics (although, for most customers, the ROI of moving to the cloud are highly – and increasingly – compelling). They are also considering the risks of maintaining their own on-premise security data-centre infrastructure, including hardware, software, physical and operational security, hiring IT security experts and meeting statutory or industry standards and certifications. Many large customers now opt for a hybrid cloud strategy that combines both public and private cloud by allowing data and applications to be shared between them. This approach gives businesses the ability to seamlessly scale their on-premises infrastructure via the public cloud when required – without giving third-party datacenters access to the entirety of their data.

3. Workforce reskilling is a new CEO priority: Many of the CEOs I speak with are excited about AI’s potential to increase productivity, reduce costs and accelerate innovation. For example, Airdoc, a fast-growing start-up from China, uses AI to help detect medical problems by examining a patient’s eyes in less than a second. Its potential to transform patient care is limitless. But would healthcare organizations be able to seamlessly integrate Airdoc’s AI solution into healthcare professionals’ workflow if they do not have the necessary training?

CEOs need to focus increasingly on workforce reskilling in their digital transformation journey to ensure that their people and processes are aligned to optimize the new technology. Without that, AI projects are likely to fail because of the lack of digital expertise to utilize the technologies and the absence of data skills to derive actionable insights.

4. Cultivate a new digital mindset: To paraphrase Peter Drucker, culture eats technology for breakfast. No amount of new technology application will deliver an organization’s true digital transformation unless it is accompanied by a corresponding change in culture; one that embraces an open mindset and favors experimentation, learning and growth. At Microsoft, we laid this foundation over four years ago when we underwent our own transformation, focusing on creating a ‘learn-it-all’, rather than ‘know-it-all’, culture. This change in mindset enabled us to, for example, embrace a dramatic transformation of our business model.

5. Trust defines the new digital organization: When it comes to customer trust, it has been said that it is often “earned in drips and lost in buckets”. Trust in your organization can take years to build and can be destroyed in a single moment. This ethos resonates particularly deeply in today’s digital world where organizations face mounting cyberthreats as well as evolving regulatory and ethical expectations when it comes to online transactions and handling of customer data.

Ultimately, the responsibility for the creation and maintenance of customer trust sits squarely with the CEO, who needs to ensure that all elements of trust – including security, privacy, reliability, transparency, compliance and ethics – are embedded into digital transformation initiatives right from the start.

Increasingly, CEOs also need to examine if their ecosystem of partners recognize and share the same trust principles as their own organization. Specifically, do the technology partners they entrust with their customer data have the same set of values, principles and policies – when it comes to the use of that data – as they do.

In summary, I believe that 2019 is the year of hyper digital transformation, where many business leaders will start to take quantum leaps in their response to a new digital economy. To do so, CEOs need imbue their organizations with ‘tech intensity’ by focusing on the five technology decisions that I have outlined.

MyAnalytics, the fitness tracker for work, now more broadly available

MyAnalytics—the fitness tracker for work—is now available to everyone using Office 365 and Microsoft 365 Enterprise and Business suites that include Exchange Online. Previously, MyAnalytics was only available with an Enterprise E5 plan or as an add-on to E1 and E3 plans.

Via a personal dashboard, an Outlook add-in, and weekly emails, MyAnalytics summarizes how you spend your time at work, then suggests ways to work smarter—from cutting unproductive meeting time to reducing time spent working after hours. It even uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help you stay on top of your to-dos by flagging commitments you’ve made in email.

New insights give a more complete picture of how you spend time at work

As we continue to evolve the product, today we’re also making MyAnalytics insights more well-rounded. MyAnalytics currently provides insights based on time spent in Outlook emails and meetings, and Skype for Business calls and chats. This month, we’re adding new insights based on your Microsoft Teams calls and chats, as well as signals from documents you’re working on that are saved in OneDrive and SharePoint. With 329,000 organizations and 87 of the Fortune 100 using Teams, this takes us one step closer to providing you with a more complete picture of how you’re spending time at work.

A recent Gallup study found that two-thirds of full-time employees say they experience burnout at work. Multiple factors are contributing to burnout—such as the increased pace of work, a rise in collaborative work like chats, emails, and meetings, and the continuing trend of technology blurring the lines between work and life. Our customers tell us they’re looking for ways to address these challenges by helping employees find time to focus, improve work-life balance, build better meeting habits, and create deeper connections with their colleagues. By making MyAnalytics features more broadly available to our millions of customers, it is our goal to make work days around the world a little more balanced and fulfilling.

Availability: MyAnalytics insights from Microsoft Teams and documents saved in OneDrive or SharePoint will begin rolling out to existing customers with MyAnalytics in January 2019. MyAnalytics features will start rolling out to the new suites in the next couple months. With today’s updates, MyAnalytics features are now available for Office 365 and Microsoft 365 suites: Business Essentials, Business Premium E1, E3, and E5 plans.

Note: Today, we’re also announcing new security and compliance packages for our enterprise customers. Please read Introducing new advanced security and compliance offerings for Microsoft 365 to learn more.

Introducing new advanced security and compliance offerings for Microsoft 365

When we first introduced Microsoft 365 bringing together Office 365, Windows 10, and Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS), our vision was two-fold: 1) deliver a great experience for customers to empower employee creativity and teamwork, and 2) provide the most secure and easy to manage platform for a modern workplace. We’ve been thrilled with the response, as customers like BP, Gap, Walmart, and Lilly have contributed to triple-digit seat growth since its launch.

A big driver of customer adoption of Microsoft 365 is the need for security and compliance solutions in an age of increasingly sophisticated cybersecurity threats, as well as complex information protection needs due to regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). To help address these needs, we are introducing two new Microsoft 365 security and compliance offerings that will be available for purchase on February 1, 2019.

  • Identity & Threat Protection—This new package brings together security value across Office 365, Windows 10, and EMS in a single offering. It includes best of breed for advanced threat protection services including Microsoft Threat Protection (Azure Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), Windows Defender ATP, and Office 365 ATP including Threat Intelligence), as well as Microsoft Cloud App Security and Azure Active Directory. This offer will be available for $12 per user per month.*
  • Information Protection & Compliance—This new package combines Office 365 Advance Compliance and Azure Information Protection. It’s designed to help chief compliance officers perform ongoing risk assessments with a compliance score across Microsoft Cloud services, automatically classify and protect sensitive data, and efficiently respond to regulatory requests leveraging artificial intelligence (AI). This offer will be available for $10 per user per month.*

All the value in these new offers remains available as part of the full Microsoft 365 E5 suite, which also includes business analytics and our enterprise grade phone system and audio conferencing. The full Microsoft 365 E5 suite includes not only security and compliance capabilities, but also offerings in business analytics featuring Power BI, and communications with audio conferencing and advanced phone system value. Additionally, customers can continue to purchase security and compliance components on a standalone basis.

There are no price increases or service impacts associated with any of these changes. The new Identity & Threat Protection and Information Protection & Compliance offerings are designed to provide customers with simpler purchase, deployment, and adoption of these security and compliance workloads.

As we speak to customers about the future of work, we know security and compliance are some of the highest organizational priorities and we hope these new offerings will help them achieve their security and compliance goals.
