“They’re not coming.”

Those words have finality when said aloud. An indirect farewell. Zavala can’t quite see Ikora’s expression in the muted reflection from his office window, but he can hear the disappointment in her voice. Beyond the glass, the City seems agnostic to the tempest of emotions. Ships soar through the night sky, lights glitter against the dark, the Traveler looms silently.

“I know,” is Zavala’s belated reply. He watches as Ikora’s reflection reaches toward him, but he’s still surprised when he feels the weight of her hand against his shoulder.

“I want to commend them for their bravery,” he says, confiding in her. “But I’d prefer they be here to berate them for their foolishness.”

Ikora wordlessly squeezes Zavala’s shoulder in response before standing beside him at the window. “I remember when you and I felt invincible. When our Ghosts felt invincible. When we could lay the foundation for the future with our bare hands. But now, it’s different. The list of names to memorialize gets longer by the day,” she says, watching debris slowly orbit the Traveler. “We’ve said goodbye to too many friends over the years.”

“And who is left to join us now… Rasputin? To think that I welcomed him in,” Zavala says, turning his back to the window and the Traveler, “only to find out he betrayed the Iron Lords all those years ago.” He looks across the datapads on his desk, jaw clenching. “Are we that desperate that we’re willing to accept mass murderers—”

He settles into his chair with a heavy sigh, lifting a hand to his forehead, eyes shut.

“Zavala.” Ikora’s voice is stern but tempered with concern as she follows him to his desk, her fingers curled against her palms. “Stronger together, remember? We aren’t abandoning anyone now.” The slight quaver in her voice belies her confidence. Most people wouldn’t notice, but Zavala has known her for over a century. When their eyes meet, she sees an unvoiced burden on his face that would appear to anyone else as a merely stoic and unflinching expression.

She sits on the corner of his desk, hands folded in her lap. “You know they’d all be lost without you,” she affirms. He doesn’t answer, but she can tell he agrees. “I would be lost without you.” When Zavala starts to counter her argument, she continues over him, unrelenting. “Out there, thousands of people look to us as a sign of hope. We need that. Everyone does.”

“It feels like I’m lying to them. To everyone,” Zavala interrupts. “The Darkness is here. We’re facing the end of all things, and I…” he closes his eyes, “I feel helpless.”

Ikora shakes her head and gives Zavala’s shoulder another squeeze. “Maybe we are.” It seems a poor thing to say at first, but she continues. “Even so, helpless doesn’t mean hopeless. We forget that sometimes, and instead of embracing our faith in moments like this, we often turn against it out of fear and doubt. When I found my faith diminished, I exiled myself to Io. I questioned everything. Including the Traveler.” She levels a knowing look at Zavala, who also recalls how that chapter of their lives ended.

“What has the Traveler ever done for us?” Zavala exclaims, his words strained through gritted teeth as he slaps his palm against his desk.

Ikora gently lifts her hand from his shoulder and searches her old friend’s face. She understands the pain behind his words and recognizes the wave of anger in his eyes as it recedes. She rises from the corner of his desk, walking back to the window.

“I’m sorry,” Zavala mumbles after the fact.

“It’s all right,” Ikora replies, gazing up at the Traveler hanging weightlessly over the City illuminated by its light. “If nothing else, the Traveler did one thing right by us.” It takes a moment for Zavala to respond to her candor.

“And what was that?” he asks, rising from his chair.

Ikora watches Zavala’s reflection in the glass, little more than a dim silhouette with glowing eyes. She smiles softly, and he can see a moment of peace and relief in her expression. A moment of faith. A moment of truth.

“It brought us together.”

This Week At Bungie – 10/01/2020

This week at Bungie, we’re summoning some ghosts.

Next week, we’re getting spooky up in the Tower again. Festival of the Lost returns on October 6 for more fright-filled fun. This year’s festival is going to rock!

Eva Levante, or as you all affectionately call her “Space Grandma,” has returned to the Tower to lead Guardians in a celebration of those we’ve lost. We miss you, Cayde.

The Haunted Forest is back and filled with ghoulish enemies. This year, we’ve added five chests to the end of the activity for five times the loot!

To open the chests, you are going to need some Cipher Decoders. Talk to Spider to get started and then they will drop from playing any of your favorite activities across the solar system – similar to Umbral Engrams. Braytech Werewolf and Horror Story will both be rewarded from these chests and each have new perk combinations to hunt for.

You’ve probably been hearing this a lot lately, but it goes double for Festival of the Lost: don’t forget to put on your mask. There are new masks available this year as well as some favorites from the past. Eva has a Masquerader Helmet which you can apply your masks to as ornaments before you head out in the world to start stockpiling candy. The mask mods for the Haunted Forest also return from last year’s event.

Before we wrap up the event on November 3, you are going to want to complete three of the Triumphs for opening chests in the Haunted Forest. Once you finish off the required Triumphs you will be able to trade in some of your candy for a mummified Exotic Sparrow, ship, and Ghost.

Finishing the “Wrapped and Ready” Triumph required to get the Exotic Ghost also unlocks the ability to purchase the Restless Shell Ghost pin through Bungie Rewards.

Speaking of Bungie Rewards, we also have a terrifying new emblem available for free if you finish the initial quest during Festival of the Lost.

That’s the gist of it, but here are a few quick notes that may answer some questions you have:

  • Minimum Power to enter the Haunted Forest is 750.
  • You can hold up to 25 Cipher Decoders before you need to go open some chests in the Haunted Forest.
  • There will be both earnable masks and masks available for Silver/Bright Dust.
    • Any Triumphs involving masks do not require masks from Eververse.
  • Bounties will return from last year and will once again offer Bright Dust.
  • All-new Eververse items will be available for both Silver and Bright Dust except for the “One-Inch Punch” finisher which will be available for Silver.
  • The toothbrush is still just a toothbrush.

Direct Relief

It seems like 2020 has been one disaster after another. It’s easy to get discouraged when times get tough, but the Destiny community always comes together to support those in need.

Here in the United States, more than 500,000 people having been evacuated from their homes across California, Oregon, and Washington, entire towns devoured by flames, and there has been a serious impact on the respiratory health of millions of individuals in and around these areas.

The Bungie Foundation is once again supporting the relief efforts of Direct Relief to provide N-95 masks, medicine, and other resources to healthcare agencies and first responders in wildfire-affected communities across California, Oregon, and Washington.
All profits from the sale of the Empathetic Ghost Shell pin from October 1 until October 15 will benefit Direct Relief’s wildfire relief efforts.

If you purchase an Empathetic Ghost Shell pin you will also instantly receive a code for the “Benevolent Hue” emblem as a thank you for your support.

Thank you all for continuing to step up to every challenge that this year has sent our way and for truly being the most generous and caring gaming community there is.

Double Ordeal

Festival of the Lost is not the only reason to log in next week. Double rewards in Nightfall: The Ordeal is back! Grab a few friends or meet some new ones in the matchmade difficulties. It’s a great time to stock up on Enhancement Prisms and Ascendant Shards for your Masterworking needs as well as to grab any missing Exotics or upgrade to a better stat roll.

The strike will be “A Garden World” so watch out for those killer robots.

PSR BUT IT’S HAUNTED

Now we turn things over to our Player Support team with the latest on known issues.

This is their report.

Festival of the Lost

Festival of the Lost 2020 is set to begin on October 6, and will conclude at the weekly reset on November 3. Players can view our updated Festival of the Lost Guide for information on event specific activities, rewards, and triumphs.

During the event, players may encounter the following issues:

  • Inspecting a Cipher Decoder will incorrectly display Masterworked versions of the Braytech Werewolf and Horror Story auto rifles as potential Haunted Forest Cache drops.
  • The Wrapped and Ready Festival of the Lost Triumph refers to the Restless Shell as the mummy Ghost, when it should be called the Festival of the Lost Ghost.
  • The lower half of the Warlock Blood Lineage Robes Universal Armor Ornament will experience a visual texture error at the launch of Beyond Light. This issue will be resolved in a patch soon after release.
Players who observe issues during the event should report to our #Help forum

KNOWN ISSUES

While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help Forum:

  • Players using the feminine character model may see gaps between the neck of Hunter cloaks and certain chest pieces.
  • The Artifact is sometimes enabled in Iron Banner.
  • Bounties/progress is sometimes not counted in Iron Banner.

For a full list of emergent issues in Destiny 2, players can review our Known Issues article. Players who observe other issues should report them to our #Help forum.

Channel Surfing

Let’s take a quick look at some of the best community-created movies we saw surfing the web this week. Do people still say that? “Surfing the web?” or is that a relic from the early 2000s? Anyways, here’s “Wonderwall.”

Movie of the Week: The Fast Find a Way

Honorable Mention: Smashing

Did you win? Congrats! Now please make sure you have your Bungie.net profile in the description of you video so we can get you your emblem.

I love this time of year. Any time it’s socially acceptable to put on a costume and eat sweets until you get a stomachache is a good time. It’s extra fun if you have kids/pets to dress up. Can’t wait to also start dressing up my Hunter next week as well. I’m going to make him look so hideous that it gives Dmg a stomachache.

This Week At Bungie – 9/24/2020

This week at Bungie, the weather is changing…

You feel that? The slight chill in the air? It’s time to prepare for a colder climate, Guardians. Europa has no sympathy unprepared guests. You might want to come with a weapon or two, because frigid storms aren’t the only danger to be found here. Don’t be afraid, though. An old friend will be waiting for your arrival.

The weather may be brutal, but that won’t stop you from exploring this frontier. Take a look at the map of Europa, and be sure to check out our most recent weather forecast.

You now have less than seven weeks to get ready. Don’t get caught out in the cold without a plan. November 10 is coming quick, and we’re eager to see how long you survive.

It’s a Pass… for Games!

Earlier this week, Forsaken and Shadowkeep became available on Xbox Game Pass. With Beyond Light on the way, there’s no better time to gear up and get acquainted with what’s going on in the world of Destiny.

A few housekeeping notes for Guardians who are being freshly rez’d in the Cosmodrome:

  • You’ll need to download Destiny 2, Forsaken, and Shadowkeep to access this content.
      • Without Destiny 2, you can’t launch the game.
  • For new Guardians joining our ranks through Xbox Game Pass, we have a Help Article specifically for you.
      • Our help forums are also available at any time if you hit a snag on your way to the Tower.
  • If you encounter any issues accessing game content or Xbox related services, please refer to Xbox Support.

Eyes up, Guardians. Welcome to the community.

Ye Olde Banner of Iron

A few weeks back, we announced the extension of Season of Arrivals, noting that we’d be adding a few fun things between September 22 and the new November 10 launch date of Beyond Light. First, we featured some Double Ordeal loot on Lake of Shadows. This week, Drifter has been upping the ante with Triple Infamy. Next week, Lord Saladin returns with Triple Valor, themed weapons and armor, and his Pinnacle Power bounty rewards.

Don’t go in thinking it will be easy to snag some loot, though. Control is the name of the game, and Power is enabled. If you haven’t risen through the Pinnacle band yet, you may find yourself facing a raid boss or two on the other team.

Iron Banner

Starts: 9/29/2020 10:00 AM PT

Ends: 10/6/2020 10:00 AM PT

There will be a few more weeks with increased rewards for Vanguard, Crucible, and Gambit, so stay tuned for announcements!

Talking Tech – Preparing for Beyond Light

With Beyond Light on fast approach, it’s time to shift our TWAB gears a little. Today, we’ll be talking through some of the back-end changes that will be coming to Destiny 2 on November 10. To guide us through this process, we’re passing the mic to Destiny Engineering Director David Aldridge.

DAldridge:  When Destiny 2 launched three years ago, we had no idea that in 2020 we’d announce a new trilogy of expansions (among other 2020 surprises we didn’t anticipate).  At the time, we thought Destiny 2’s arc would look a lot more like Destiny 1 – a couple of expansions, and then a sequel.

We learned many lessons from the transition to Destiny 2, and from shipping Curse of Osiris, Warmind, Forsaken, the Year-2 Seasons, and Shadowkeep. When we evaluated those lessons, we decided not to pursue a Destiny 3, but instead to reinvest everything in Destiny 2 and make it all that it can be (check out our longer writeup on this choice here). To support that strategy, we’ve made several tech investments to help us sustainably evolve the game for years to come, and some of those investments are arriving in Beyond Light.

Many of these changes are under the hood and won’t affect your experience (except insofar as they help us deliver you more and better Destiny in the future), but some may result in neat improvements, curious behavior differences, or bugs. This means that, on November 10, some places and things will feel a little like Sliders (only 90s kids will get this), so we’d like to give you a rundown of some of the changes and possible side effects.

We shifted our mission scripting model to run on the Physics Host instead of the Mission Host (more details on this split here, in the interview with Matt Segur). In the long run this change will give designers options to create more novel mission mechanics by giving the mission scripting environment full access to the game state, instead of the much more limited access the Mission Host had. For example, the Physics Host knows exactly where enemy combatants are and what actions they recently performed – while the Mission Host only knew how many combatants were alive in a squad and what that squad was generally trying to accomplish. In Beyond Light we’re only launching the foundations of this system, and we look forward to evolving and leveraging it in the future.
    • What you might notice:
        • The new scripting environment changed many behaviors in complex ways, and you may see interesting behavior changes or bugs in pre-Beyond-Light missions (and public events, and similar) that were originally built and tested on the previous system.  We’ve tested these missions heavily and stamped out many bugs, but some will undoubtedly slip through. We’ll be monitoring and fixing remaining bugs over time. In some cases, these issues were more severe – for example, they caused the Prophecy dungeon to be unavailable temporarily. We’re all excited for its triumphant return, slated for the end of this year!
        • One other cool new feature in this area is face-to-face joins in social spaces, so you can now fireteam up with Tower friends without a long Tower reload!

We revamped our content building and patching pipeline for speed and install size. With the tremendous size of Destiny, our complete shippable content builds were frequently taking north of 24 hours. We made investments to bring that down to sub-12 hours, which resulted in a bunch of changes to our content and patching formats. We also took on work to allow us to cull content that we’ve upgraded or replaced – our previous patching system had limited capabilities here (due to trying to minimize patch sizes and other constraints), and the current Destiny 2 install has a significant amount of accreted ‘dead’ content (e.g. assets in the base install that were replaced in later patches).

    • What you might notice:
        • Due to all these changes, Beyond Light will be a full re-download on all platforms – we know this will be painful for those with slower or metered internet connections, and we’re sorry about that. To help mitigate this, we’re planning to enable Beyond Light preloads sometime in the evening of November 9, Pacific Time, which should give everyone at least 10 hours to download before the gates open.
        • Destiny 2’s install size shrinks by 30-40%: Due to a combination of culling unused or replaced content, install size optimizations, and moving some content to the Destiny Content Vault, Destiny 2’s install size will shrink to between 59 and 71GB (depending on platform), a reduction of 30 to 40%. These improvements should also help us control install size better in the coming years.
        • We hope to use these much faster builds to accomplish two things:
            • Help us ship mission-critical fixes faster when game-breaking bugs arise.
            • Reduce our overall ship pipeline depth, enabling us to work on Destiny releases closer to their ship dates, so we can react to fresher information about what’s happening in the live game. For example, historically each of our Seasons has had to get deep into production before the preceding season launched, preventing us from reacting to learnings from that preceding season. These tech improvements should give us 1-2 more weeks of flexibility on a Seasonal scale, helping us pivot more quickly in some cases.

We rebuilt our character face system. We know that how your Guardians look is important to you, and we’ve long wanted to add more player customization to Destiny. Our original system for player faces had some combinatoric content authoring problems – for example, every decal had to be authored completely custom for each player face permutation. This prevented us from extending this area of the game with more content and features. We’ve upgraded to a significantly more capable system (with e.g. runtime decal projection), which we hope to leverage for more player customization options in the future. As part of this process we reviewed the existing player models with our Diversity Committee and Employee Resource Groups in the studio to make small tweaks to existing player heads. We’re also building a list of Guardian face shapes we should bring to the game in the future in order to increase Guardian diversity in Destiny, with the long-term goal of enabling everyone to imagine themselves as their Guardian.

    • What you might notice:
        • Your Guardian’s face may look a bit different.

We relit portions of EDZ and Nessus. During the early stages of Beyond Light production the Lighting and Skies teams had a desire to provide a visual refresh to the two remaining D2 Year 1 destinations, EDZ and Nessus, as they enter their fourth year in rotation. To that end, the teams performed relights and global lighting updates to a number of locations on both destinations.

    • What you might notice:
        • Different lighting on existing destinations! The changes are intentional and are meant to bring the visual quality of these spaces up to our current lighting standards, while providing a fresh coat of paint for some of our Year 1 locations. We hope you enjoy these updates to some familiar locations when you explore EDZ and Nessus this November.

We’re excited to leverage these improvements to redouble our efforts on Destiny 2, and we aim to make Destiny 2 still feel like your home away from home.

Thanks,

-David Aldridge

P.S. Congratulations on making it to the end of this long and nerdy love letter. If your passion for all things Destiny Tech is not yet spent, you may enjoy the Reddit AMA that Destiny Engineering Manager Chris Kosanovich and I did a couple months ago!

Did You Say… More Emblems???

Beyond Light isn’t just bringing Europa to the fold. It’s also bringing many, many pieces of loot. This year, we’re refreshing a few Community emblems for you to hunt. Whether it be Fashion, Art, Movie of the Week, or the Bungie Bounty, we have some new swag to hopefully catch your eye. I’m personally giddy that we have seven total Community Emblems to show off. There’s just something about that number that we love so much…

Fashion Show

Featured Artist

Movie of the Week

Bungie Bounty

Shadowkeep variants for each emblem will be available through November 10. There will be a few final chances to earn them before the new hotness becomes available. Stay tuned!

We’d also like to take a moment to celebrate our Community Volunteers. If you’ve ever visited the help forum, you may have noticed some members answering questions and linking players to general help articles and Bungie-authored troubleshooting methods. These are the Mentors, the “white gloves” of our community, dedicated to lending a helping hand to any player trying to get back into the game.

Our Moderators, however, are referred to as Ninjas. They work in the shadows, removing bad actors from our forums whenever the Code of Conduct is broken. You may see one every so often in the forums replying to threads, but their work is behind the scenes.

As of late, we’ve also been receiving some help from community moderators during Bungie livestreams. Whether they be Bungie Bounties, charity initiatives, or whatever reason we decide to broadcast, these individuals are helping to keep chat a bit cleaner. Join us in welcoming Shields to the fold of our community moderation teams.

Each volunteer group will be receiving a new emblem this year. While it might seem like a minor gesture, we hope that you join us in giving them thanks whenever you see these emblems in the wild.

Mentors

Ninjas

Shields

If you’re wondering “How do I become a volunteer?”, our members are all community sourced. If we see you helping out in the forums frequently or just having a good time in chat while upholding our Code, we may reach out to see if you’d like to join up! That said, don’t do it for the emblem. Do it out of the kindness of your heart and for the betterment of our community. The emblem is just a little treat.

Support Specialists

This week was a fun one. A new Hotfix arrived at our door, and Xbox Game Pass kicked off in spectacular fashion. Destiny Player Support is here with vital information on what issues have been found, and what troubleshooting methods are available.

This is their report.

XBOX GAME PASS

Earlier this week, Destiny 2: Forsaken and Destiny 2: Shadowkeep became available for Xbox Game Pass subscribers to download and play through Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass members will continue to be able to access these Destiny 2 expansions if their Game Pass membership is maintained. For more information, please visit our Destiny 2 on Xbox Game Pass guide.

For a full list of emergent issues in Destiny 2, players can review our Known Issues article. Players who observe other issues should report them to our #Help forum.

Enough Words, More Movies

Woof, this TWAB’s getting long. My fingers are getting tired from the typing. Let’s take a break, shall we? The movies we have on tap from the Community Creations page this week are pretty entertaining; definitely hope to get a little giggle in there while marveling at the skill required to craft such fun videos.

Movie of the Week: Hmmmmm….

Honorable Mention: Hunters have the best Fashion

Wait, do you see your video listed here‽ Awesome! Let’s check off a few things before we get you your emblem. Is your Bungie.net profile linked in the description of the video? Good. Did you credit any fellow creators who appeared in your video? Sweet! We’ll get your emblem to you within a few business days.

Did you make it this far? Always fun to have a meaty TWAB. I’ll spare you a long outro, but I do want to say this: Thanks for stopping by. We always appreciate those who tune in for the weekly conversation, whether we have a lot of new info, or just a simple check-in to see how everyone’s doing between content drops.

Festival of the Lost is on the way. It’s almost time to get Spooky. Stay tuned for tricks and treats, because they’ll be coming soon…

Cheers,

100% Chance of Snow

On the frozen moon of Europa, Eramis, the Fallen Kell exploits a dark power to grow her army’s strength. The Vanguard’s attention is demanded.

The allure of this ancient power clouds your focus and tempts you with Darkness. Stasis whispers in your ear before you even arrive. You touch down in the snow-covered clearing; the distress signal from Variks still lingering in your ears.

The crunch of your boots in the snow makes you aware of the silence. A silence that is short-lived. It starts as a light gust, carrying away the gentle flakes of snow that rest on your shoulders. Then, without warning, it hits you. A sudden wave of frozen air cuts through your armor. The hut in the distance seems farther away – harder to see. You lean into the wind as it grows in strength and can’t help but wonder, “Why didn’t I park closer?”

Frost begins to spread across your helm and the storm howls as Europa challenges your every step. The squall envelops you and your destination vanishes into the white. But still you press on, bolstered by the steadfast guidance of the Light. The developers at Bungie responsible for the immersive experience on Europa have been wanting to take a crack at a new type of weather system for quite some time. The desolate, icy, and hostile surface of Jupiter’s moon offered them the perfect environment for a snowstorm.

Europa Design Lead Alex Velicky recalls, “We were brainstorming and Ed Brennan [Europa World Art Lead] proposed the idea of a blizzard to help sell the fantasy of a harsh environment. I thought it would be awesome if design had direct control over it and it didn’t take long for everyone to get excited about the implementation.” And so, the task of making a brutal Bungie blizzard began.

The team tested features like slowing player movement, altering grenade paths, and even knocking players off their Sparrows. “It was painfully unfun and made doing anything in the game almost impossible,” said Velicky. VFX Lead Justin Hayward added, “We iterated a lot to find a delicate balance between it seeming dangerous but without it actually being disorienting, oppressive, or negatively impacting core gameplay.”

Making Europa feel like a treacherous frontier was the main goal behind this new system, so they kept digging until they struck the right balance. When they found it, they moved onto believably integrating it so that it felt like part of a living breathing world.

“Most weather in Destiny is fairly simple,” said Velicky. “Because of this, most of the relevant systems are things our Skies, VFX, and Lighting teams set up and then leave to run consistently.” The team wanted to play with that consistency and be able to control the weather to create some intense and dynamic moments.

The answer lied in scripting the weather in a way that was similar to the systems found in Destiny’s activities. “After a lot of investigation from some clever folks, we managed to do it,” Velicky said. “The resulting system is script-controlled and fully networked.”

And just like that, storms on demand. Dynamic weather was a huge step for the Destiny team, but it was just the first. Knowing that real storms don’t suddenly appear and disappear with the exact same features every time, the team looked at different ways they could immerse players into oncoming and departing storms.

“We watched a lot of reference from nature documentaries, movies, and games,” said Mark Goldsworthy, a creative lead on the Skies and Lighting Team. “Then we created our own spin on it as we imagined how this would look and feel on a moon of Jupiter in Destiny.”

They settled on a handful of variables that, when blended, could organically grow or diminish a storm based on the needs of the story. As a result, weather on Europa comes in three basic flavors:

The first has no storm at all. This is what Europa would look like without the new weather system. Clear skies, fresh snow, perfect skiing weather – consider this the smoothest sailing you’ll do on the icy moon.

During a light storm, the wind picks up, snowfall increases around you, and is largely aesthetic. “The light storm blots out the sun and completely obscures the starry skies above you,” said Velicky. “This alone dramatically changes the feel of the destination.”

“When the heavy storm hits, the sky is heavily obscured,” Velicky said. “The wind roars and the snow flurries become even more violent. The mid-ground is difficult to see and, if not for the faintly visible silhouettes, it would be nearly impossible to navigate at all. Players are encouraged to stick closer to cover and move with intent.”

It’s also worth remembering that just because the weather picks up, doesn’t mean the moon’s combatants disappear. Even though it looks like the snow is shooting at you, it’s not. So, with nearly zero visibility and a Fallen Kell to stop, it might not hurt to pack a thermal scope. The gusts of wind rushing past your ears, the creaking of structures as they bend and sway, even the silence. In many cases, you hear a storm before you see it. The Audio Team wanted to give Europa an identity and a voice, so they introduced a unique palette of sounds that would establish it as a recognizable and real place in the Destiny universe.
Sound Designer Keith Sjoquist went searching for sounds that would evoke an alien wasteland that is familiar, but subtly unusual – alien and otherworldly. “Early on, [Sound Designer] Peter Comley, shared a video of seal sounds in Antarctica that he had been drawing inspiration from that really resonated with me,” said Sjoquist. “They were characterized by descending tones, clicks, and booms. It was striking how closely tied to the icy environment and naturally evocative of cold and hardness they felt.”

Sjoquist used this video as an inspirational cornerstone and he began soliciting sounds from other team members and recording some of his own material to feed through a custom FX processing chain.

To implement the new sound design, they piped information from Destiny’s new weather system into their audio software. “We used the game data to alter the pitch, the volume, and the triggering frequency of the sounds,” Sjoquist explained. Data connected to things like the storm intensity could then be used to alter the soundscapes in real time.

There were also wind loops and structural sounds added to locations in the world that were all tied to the same game inputs. These audio cues would remain silent when the storm was inactive but would slowly come to life as the weather picked up. “All of these things working together really made the Europa storm feel dynamic and unique,” said Sjoquist.

Click to listen to the frozen frontier of Europa as designed by the Destiny Audio Team.

Bundle up, Guardians. November is right around the corner and it’s getting cold outside.

This Week At Bungie – 9/17/2020

This week at Bungie, we’re making the most of your Ghosts.

Last week, a new Exotic became available to add to your collection and we celebrated Destiny’s birthday. I’m still keeping an eye out for pictures of attempts at making that cake. Things are a little quieter this week. Which makes it a great time to take advantage of the double rewards being offered for completions of The Ordeal this week. You love to see it when a bug becomes a feature.

Speaking of upcoming features…

Customizable Ghosts

A Guardian’s Ghost is their most trusted ally and is tasked with keeping them in the fight. Your Ghost isn’t just in charge of bringing you back from the brink, it also comes with some perks and a wide range of cool looks to choose from. We have some changes planned for your floaty friends and asked Designer Mina Jasinski to tell us about what her team is doing to improve how you customize your Ghosts.

Mina Jasinski: Ghosts have always been important partners to our Guardians in the Destiny universe, but they haven’t received any meaningful updates in quite some time.

To allow Ghosts to truly shine as the useful and interesting companions we’d like them to be, we decided it was time to give them a bit of an overhaul.

In Destiny 2: Beyond Light, Ghosts have received a system update which shares some functionality to what was done with armor in Shadowkeep. Here’s a brief outline of what to expect:

  • Ghost Shells will now have energy levels and access to mods with various energy costs instead of being pre-loaded with specific perks.
  • This treatment has been applied to all Ghosts outside of the Generalist Shell, so you can use your favorite Ghost Shells, regardless of tier.
  • A selection of mods will be available on all Ghost Shells by default, while the remaining ones will be obtainable via various gameplay sources. Information on where to find these mods can be learned from Collections.
  • Ghost mods will be obtained from gameplay reward loops and will not be purchasable from Eververse.
  • Ghosts now have four mod slots. Three are unlocked by default, and the fourth is unlocked by Masterworking the Ghost Shell.

One of our goals with this update was to separate visuals from functionality. We wanted any Ghost Shell to be viable and still have access to highly useful mods, regardless of tier or source.

You’ll be able to select your favorite Ghost Shell based on appearance without any detriment to your experience. Whether you purchase a Ghost Shell from Eververse, earn it from the newest raid or pull an old favorite out of Collections, your Ghost will have access to all the same mods across your account. From there you can increase energy levels on your favorite Ghost Shells and set each of them up with different mod combinations of your choosing.

As mentioned above, Ghosts will now have access to a total of four mod slots, each with their own unique mod selection. There will be an Experience mod slot, a Tracking mod slot, an Economic mod slot, and an Activity mod slot; the last of which is unlocked when the Ghost is Masterworked at 10 energy. You’ll be able to mix and match mods from these categories however you like, with respect to energy limits. Mod slots each have a selection of mods that can be combined to fit your playstyle. For example, a Crucible-focused player who wants to grind out materials and earn XP towards their Seasonal rewards track might choose Guiding Light, Meager Glimmer Booster, and Lesser Core Harvest (Crucible). There are a variety of combinations that can be set up on different Ghosts to suit whatever goals you might be chasing at the time!

For those wondering what will happen to the old Ghost perks, most have been brought forward largely unchanged as default unlocked mods. In some cases, such as the destination-specific material or cache trackers, those mods have been transformed into globally effective, non-destination-specific versions of themselves for better utility. Energy costs for those mods now reflect the increased flexibility and the mods must be earned from various vendor engrams. Kill Tracker and Leviathan Boss Kill perks will remain intrinsic only on their specific Ghost Shells. Even with these changes you’ll still be able to build most of the popular Exotic perk combinations that were available previously such as Guiding Light and Treasure Hunter, along with a plethora of new combinations!

We hope that these changes allow you to interact with your Ghost more meaningfully and help you to set up a variety of Ghost Shells that suit you in various playstyles and activities.

Honoring a Friend

Next week, we have a tribute going live in game to honor one of our dear friends at Vicarious Visions who passed away last year, Matt Helsom. The weekly reset will include a director message that will send you to Mars for a short quest to honor Mr. Helsom. He worked closely with teams at both Bungie and VV on various projects during our partnership and we wanted to memorialize his contributions in the Destiny universe.

We wish all of his family, friends, and everyone he impacted during his life the very best. Thank you to everyone in the community who joins us in remembering this warm soul.

X Marks the Pass

KNOWN ISSUES

While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help Forum:
  • Earlier today, we announced that due to the extended season, Clans can no longer gain XP and Hawthorne’s Weekly Challenge can no longer be completed. Our investigation found that trying to fix these issues could result in all Clans losing their earned ranks. These issues will be fixed on Nov. 10 when Beyond Light launches.
  • Felwinter’s Helm changes the Warlock’s Solstice ornament glows to another glow.
For a full list of emergent issues in Destiny 2, players can review our Known Issues article. Players who observe other issues should report them to our #Help forum.

Dailies

Every day, new videos are posted on the Creations page and all around the World Wide Web. Each week, we pick our favorites and share them here for all the community to see. Hence the name, Movie of the Week. Here’s this week’s picks.

Movie of the Week: Fear Does Not Exist In This Dojo

Honorable Mention: EMERGENCY MEETING!

If you see your video above, please make sure you have your Bungie.net profile in the description of said video so we can deliver your new emblem.

You ever have someone shine a laser into your eye until you can see good(aka LASIK surgery)? If you’re planning on it, I recommend not doing it while a huge plume of smoke blankets your area for several days. How is the air where you are? We’re having a bit of “helmet on in the Tower” kind of time here on the West Coast right now.

Wherever you are, we hope you are doing well and looking forward to the bonus weeks of this Season as we rapidly approach the release on Beyond Light in a few short months. Next week, we will have Triple Infamy available, so go bank some motes.

Community Focus – light.gg

Our focus this week is on a community-created site that boasts tons of features to help you keep track of Destiny’s armor, weapons, Triumphs, and so much more. We recently worked with them and some other API creators to put together a checklist of the Triumphs you should complete before the end of the Season. They’ve been amazing at finding creative ways to utilize the magic of the API to create cool features for the community.

Please meet light.gg.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role in the Destiny community.

Alan: Hello everyone! My name is Alan / afpac and I run the Destiny 2 database and tools site, light.gg. I’ve been a fan of FPS games all of my life, from playing freeze tag mods back in Quake 1, to everyone’s favorite Assault on Zanzibar in Halo 2, all the way to Destiny 2 and other games today. Aside from that, I’m a former Top 50 world raider in World of Warcraft, so when I heard Bungie had built a game that brought aspects of the MMO genre into an FPS game, I was instantly drawn in.

In my personal life, I’m a software architect by day (imagine that), and I’m the proud dad of two adoring huskies and three indifferent cats. I enjoy hiking, biking, bowling, golfing, and traveling when there isn’t a plague.

Top 50 raider huh – I was the second-best rogue on Stormrage (no, not really) but I digress. You want to introduce the rest of your team and have them share their favorite subclass and weapons?

Alan: Some may be surprised to hear the team behind the site is actually just me – I write all the code, maintain all the servers, scream when they crash, all of it.

While I dabble in all the classes/subclasses, Warlock is home to me, and the sound of a Nova Bomb murdering a pack of Thrall was once my text message ringtone. While I fondly remember the days of sniping Hobgoblins from miles away with Icebreaker in Vault of Glass, my all-time favorite gun has to be Telesto, with The Recluse coming in a very close second.

Oh… yea I just assumed you had a team backing you up! That is impressive. What are some of the most-used features you built… by yourself?

Alan: The Item Database that lets people see possible rolls on weapons (and suggestions from the community on which perks they should actually use – shout out to @Panda_Pax and @Mercules904) is far and away the most popular feature on the site.

The God Roll Finder, which allows you to specify which perks you’d like and find weapons that can possibly drop with them, is another big hit.

Finally, the Collection Leaderboard – the feature the site was originally built around –  still has a vibrant community of players who enjoy grinding out the hardest to achieve Triumphs and collecting the rarest items to climb its ranks.

Those all sound like great resources for Guardians. Any other feature plans you are working on you want to tease out?

Alan: While I have a list as long as my arm of things I’d like to do, the closest thing on the horizon is what I’m internally calling Custom Wishlists. The idea is to allow people to customize the perk suggestions they see on weapon pages to match their own personal taste, share those lists with their friends, and quickly be able to tell which items in their inventory match up with something on their wishlist.

Another goal here is to give a platform to the folks in the community that love spending time testing out weapons to give some guidance to their fellow guardians on what perk combinations are worth giving a shot. These featured members will be able to curate their wishlists over time and share them with the community prominently on item pages.

There are also a few things on the backburner that are about 80% of the way there (loadout theorycrafting tool / PGCR  with an absurd number of statistics) that will hopefully see the light of day at some point.

What made you decide to jump into the API community and start  light.gg?

Alan: The site really is just a collection of things that I wished existed for Destiny 2 that I couldn’t find a good tool for at the time. It started as a Collection Leaderboard shortly after Destiny 2 launch because I wanted to see how my collection measured up against my friends and others in the community. From there, I wanted to really drill down into items, being able to search by insane combinations of criteria at once (ala Wowhead), so I built the Item Database. Then with the advent of random rolls, I wanted to be able to find which weapons could roll with the perks I like, so the God Roll Finder was born.

More or less everything from there has been either something I thought would be useful/cool or a great idea from a member of the community that I’ve taken a stab at bringing to life.

We always love seeing what you come up with and create. Where all can we find you on the internet?

  • @lightdotgg on Twitter is a great way to find out the Trials rewards or Xur rolls on Friday, as well as stay up to date on the newest site content.
  • We have fledgling YouTube channel, where I’ve committed to upload more tutorial videos for different features.
  • https://discord.gg/pmHRd5U is the site’s Discord server, the best place to argue over rolls or pitch your idea for a new feature on the site.

Anything else you would like to add before we let you go?

Alan: I’d just like to thank everyone for the resounding support they’ve always shown. The past almost three years have been extremely exciting and humbling. Seeing a personal passion project really take off and become something tens of thousands of people use daily is something I always hoped for but never thought would actually happen. The Destiny 2 community is truly one of the best corners of the internet, and I am proud be a small part of what makes it great.

We’d like to thank Alan for stopping by to tell us all about light.gg and some of the cool features it has. Make sure you check out the site and follow them on social for updates on when new features are added.
We love doing these and will keep them coming. If you have any suggestions on who we should focus on next let us know us on Twitter or our forums.

This Week At Bungie – 9/10/2020

This week at Bungie, we’re consuming stacks of Light.

Within Destiny 2, the exodus of Io, Titan, Mercury, and Mars continues. Zavala has tasked you with spreading word of impending Darkness and keeping our beloved vendors up to speed. There are still a few more loose ends to tie up on these destinations, so get to it.

Along your quest, you’ll have some final chances to earn unique loot and fill out your collections before access to various strikes is impeded by the Darkness.

While the Traveler may have chosen you, it’s almost time to go beyond the Light. Don’t forget where you came from, though, as we’re celebrating Destiny’s almost-seventh birthday this week! Yeah, we know, it’s been six years. But seven is darker.

If you haven’t snagged the sweet wallpapers or seen our Stasis deep dives, head on over to our fresh blog article covering the fun! While we’re celebrating the past, we’re also getting ready for the future.

Whether you’re a veteran of Destiny or have just been rez’d in the Cosmodrome, thank you for playing, and thank you for being a part of our community.

Suit up

A few TWAB’s ago, Luke Smith took some time to run through changes to our philosophy in doling out rewards through the various activities of Destiny 2. Hit the article again if you’d like a refresher on vanity, cosmetics, and more. Today, we’ll be focusing on core playlist rewards (strikes, Gambit, and Crucible).

To quote the article, here’s what you can expect on November 10:

  • We are adding a new set of Armor for the core playlists (strikes, Gambit, and Crucible).
  • This armor shares a set of new geometry, with decals and shaders specific to the activity.
  • We will create new sets like this each Year (e.g., Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, etc.)
  • This set will arrive alongside the next expansion.

This armor can be earned by completing activities or through vendor rank-ups. Weekly challenges are also being updated to offer avenues for players to earn higher-stat packages for these armor sets.

Additionally, Year 4 will see the return of pursuit weapons. For those of you who may have joined our community in the last Season or two, these weapons have static perks, but allow for some customization. The final two perk columns have multiple perks to choose from, so you can tailor your weapon to your desired playstyle. Our eagle-eyed Guardians may recognize this beauty from a recent Stasis trailer….

Our goal is to have a pursuit weapon available per Season, earned through a focused quest. Banshee will give you a choice between Strikes, Crucible, or Gambit to earn the base model. Make sure you take a moment to think about how you want to earn the weapon, as you’ll be locked in to specific objectives for whichever activity you pick.

Once you finish the main quest, Commander Zavala, Lord Shaxx, and the Drifter will offer you an additional quest which will reward you with weapon ornaments to the theme of their respective activities. If you’re omnivorous and enjoy all three offerings, all three will be available to you.

So, now that we’ve caught your eye with some fancy armor and a new sniper, let’s take a quick look at how things are changing for core activities as you launch into your new adventures on November 10. Strike, Gambit, and Crucible playlists are being streamlined.

Crucible

Starting in Season 12, the Director will be updated to reduce the number of playlists available at a given time.

  • Featured Modes:
      • Control
      • Elimination
      • Rumble
      • Survival
          • Both Survival and Survival: Freelance will be available
      • Weekly rotator:
          • Clash, Mayhem, and Showdown
      • Private matches
      • Limited Availability
          • Iron Banner
          • Iron Banner: Freelance will make its debut in Season 12.
              • Similar to Competitive, this will be a smaller node next to Iron Banner when the playlist is available.
      • Weekend Availability
          • Trials of Osiris
          • Note: Adept weapons, rewarded to those reaching the Lighthouse, return to Trials of Osiris in Season 12. (More details on functionality to come in a Sandbox preview, currently planned for October.)

Strikes

  • Vanguard strikes and Nightfall: The Ordeal will be your two playlist options.
      • Each playlist will continue to offer weekly challenges for Powerful loot.
      • Nightfall: The Ordeal will continue to feature matchmaking at lower difficulties, and increased rewards for higher difficulty options.
      • Note: We’re also looking to add Adept weapons to strikes in a future Season. We’ll have updates closer to Season 13 on what to expect.

Gambit

As covered last week, Gambit and Gambit Prime will be consolidated into a single mode. We have some additional details on specific rule changes, as well as development notes from the team on how things are changing, and the goals behind them.

Hi Gambiteers! We wanted to give you an explanations of rules changes coming to Gambit in November, as well as a key update from last week.

First, some goals we wrote down before we started:

    • Build a more approachable Gambit Prime, keeping the one-round format with a longer round, but without the Gambit Prime armor perks.
    • Rebalance the motes phase to last 2/3 of each match, rather than half of the match.
    • Speed up the Primeval fight (compared to Gambit Prime) to give more of the feeling of a ‘boss rush.’

We started with the Gambit Prime encounters, full stop. However, without the Reaper buffs, the Large bosses that come in enemy waves were too tanky – so we pulled them all down to miniboss or elite. The pacing should feel like how Gambit feels for a pickup group, or how Prime feels for a fully kitted team.

We also playtested the “having the motes” phase target a score of 150, and/or have a heavier mote drain, but this allowed organized teams to steamroll even more effectively – not less. So, we pulled back to the current Gambit Prime mote target and drain.

We started with the Gambit Prime Blockers, but pulled the Taken Captain from the Blocker lineup, as he proved a little too potent for a 10-mote Blocker. We replaced him with the Phalanx, who can be tough to kill, but not as lethal. Since we don’t have the armor perks, we also had to remove the 20-mote Giant Blocker.

We kept the invasions during mote phases at three – just like Gambit Prime – but pulled back the minimum time between invasions during mote phases from 10 seconds to 20 seconds. It never feels good to get invaded back-to-back.

For the boss fight, we started with the Gambit Primeval fight, removed the timed Slayer buffs, increased the Primeval health and potency of the slayer buff given by when killing envoys. We respawn the envoys every 40% damage done to the Primeval – so if you get invaded and the Primeval is healed a lot, you have the opportunity to get more Slayer buffs and catch up. The fight length ends up somewhere in between the original Gambit and Gambit Prime, so we adjusted the invasion timer during the Primeval phase to match – right in between Gambit and Gambit Prime timing.

So, overall this mode will be a little quicker than Gambit Prime – mostly due to shortening of the boss phase and the removal of the larger bosses from the fronts, but one that still gives that great Gambit feeling that you all love.

We see you’re hungry for info, and we’re excited to bring the heat. As we approach Beyond Light, we’ll have more details on how your weekly rituals are changing. Economy, Eververse, Sandbox, and more. We’re looking forward to talking about things like solo queue Iron Banner, but we have a few things left to tie up as we approach launch.

Stay tuned…

Triumph Trackers

Last week, we announced some changes coming to Triumphs in November. Various Triumphs and Seals will soon become unavailable, leaving you to figure out which things to prioritize before the end of the Season. Partnering with some community API creators, there are now multiple options for you to create a checklist of sorts. Here’s a quick list in no particular order. They’re all amazing, and we hope you find one that suits you best!

Many thanks to these creators, and we’re excited to see how their portals and communities grow as we begin another year of Destiny content.

The noble quest to vanquish all bugs

Destiny 2 Update 2.9.2 shipped this Tuesday, and the Player Support team has been prowling the #Help forum in search of fresh bugs to smash. Thankfully, it doesn’t look like there are any major issues cropping up!

This is their report.

COMPANION APP

Early last week, Bungie.net and the Destiny API underwent maintenance. As a result of that maintenance, item transfer performance using the Companion App or third-party apps became roughly 10x faster for most players. The Companion app can be used by all Destiny 2 players on any platform, console or PC.

CONTACT FORMS

Last week, we were investigating an issue with our Contact Forms on Bungie.net. This issue has now been resolved, and players can now use the various contact form to submit help requests on help.bungie.net.

RESOLVED ISSUES

Below is a list of issues that have been resolved with Update 2.9.2 on September 8. The full patch notes for Update 2.9.2 can be viewed here.
    • Players will no longer freeze when respawning in Gambit.
    • Enemies will no longer stop spawning in Hexahedron area in the Prophecy Dungeon, blocking players from progressing.
    • Players who completed Tommy’s Matchbook catalyst pursuit will no longer be re-awarded it.
    • Redrix’s Broadsword will now be available to reclaim from Collections.
    • Players will no longer block quest progress by acquiring Calcified Light without the quest active.

CURRENT KNOWN ISSUES

While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help Forum:
    • Player badge counts will sometimes not update when the Season of Arrivals Collections badge is completed.
    • The Tribute Hall’s Completionist triumph doesn’t count Season Collections badges.
    • Players need to complete the Exodus: Preparation quest before they can begin the Exodus: Evacuation quest for Traveler’s Chosen.
    • The Artifact is sometimes enabled in Iron Banner.
    • Bounties/progress is sometimes not counted in Iron Banner.
For a full list of emergent issues in Destiny 2, players can review our Known Issues article. Players who observe other issues should report them to our #Help forum.

Stacks on Stacks on Stacks on Stacks

Have you consumed your daily dose of Light, yet? No? Well, go grab your Traveler’s Chosen and have a stack! I heard it goes well with popcorn, a soda, and a relaxing MOTW.

Movie of the Week: Legends Never Die

Honorable Mention: Thread the Needle

Honorable Mention: Wait, that’s illegal!

Want a chance at the MOTW emblem? Head over to the Creations page and submit your stuff! As a heads up, we’ll be getting a new emblem to hand out for MOTW in Season 12, so shoot your shot before the current offering is gone. More on that in a future TWAB.

It’s weird to think, six years ago I was sitting in my friend’s garage, wrapped in a blanket, playing through Destiny for the first time after calling out “sick” from work. I think my initial character was a Hunter. The cloaks were cool, and the Golden Gun shown in the trailers caught my eye. I had no clue what Rampage was, why Suros was considered good, or why anyone would care about an Exotic Rocket Launcher.

Fast forward to now, we have a massive community with multiple expansions, Exotics, weapons, subclasses, and more under our belts. You’ve fought back the Darkness, lost your Light, met a Wizard that came from the Moon, and more. And now – in only a few months – after looking at beautiful concept art since 2014, we’ll finally sink our boots in the snows of Europa. We’ll also be embracing Darkness abilities for the first time.

I know I’ve said “we’re just getting started” a few times since starting on the Community team… but every release gives us a chance to set off on a new path. Fresh experiences with a sense of wonder, challenges that push you and grow your skill, and opportunities to make new friends along the way. Thanks for joining us on this wild ride.

Now, it’s time for me to hop into Iron Banner as I hunt for a few different rolls on my weaponry. I’ve heard whispers from our Sandbox folk on upcoming changes to 110 Hand Cannons. Might be fun to snag a few random rolls to try out when Beyond Light ships. That conversation is for another time, though. How about next month? We’ll see if this little tease makes it through editorial. If it does, I bet you 200,000 Glimmer that someone makes a five-minute YouTube video about it.

Happy hunting.

Cheers,

-dmg04

CITIZENS OF THE CITY

1. GENERATIONS

Music. Under a streaked sky painted in the glowing wreckage of the Almighty, the people of the Last City rejoice. Debris burns through clouds and explodes like fireworks high above. Those who remember the Red War peer upward with cautious hope. The Warmind had done as Commander Zavala said it would, and now the Traveler—a great shield beneath a torrent—turns away any remaining danger from the fallout. Fragments of the sun-eating hulk that would have struck it instead cascade off its wide dome of Light and skip into the distance.

Under the watch of Titans posted at the borders of every district, children run laughing through the streets with wooden rifles. Their imagination transforms the stone walkways into Warmind bunker tunnels; homes and side streets allow them to access terminals, duck behind cover, and use offshoot ventilation shafts for quick flanking maneuvers. Rufus, a large black neighborhood hound, bounces through the horde of children as a ferocious Warbeast. They swarm around to pet him, and he flops over, belly raised to the fiery sky, defeated. The older children howl at the fall of their mighty Warbeast and charge with Cabal-themed papier-mâché armor, painted red. Sparkler grenades burst and shine as if infused with Light.

A true Guardian stands beneath the Traveler, in command of the not-so-tall forces of the Light gathered around him. His armor—slick-gold and clean to imaginative eyes—is in reality, dull and marred from ricochet dents and the imprints of close calls. His holsters: empty, save the loaded Sidearm pinned to his chest by a tight bandolier. He raises a fist to steady their hearts against the charge. The Cabal menace advances with a wild clattering. The defenders raise their wooden rifles. The Guardian drops to a knee, slams his fist into the ground, and a rift of restorative Light spreads from his touch. The children cheer.

Their forces clash. The Cabal complain they have no Guardians.

Rehnpeir listens to the ruckus outside as he rings soapy water from a coarse cloth. Droplets break the water’s rhythm of ripples pulsing in time with the music of a passing parade. He watches the dissonance with optimism.

“Come clean up for supper!” he calls out.

“Not yet, Gramp! We’re protecting Rasputin from the Cabal!”

Rehnpeir’s mouth curls into a smile. His grandchildren’s words were spoken with careless abandon. Their idea of battle is a facsimile of heroic tales told by booming-voiced Guardians clad in legend. The children, even the older ones, barely remembered the Red War, let alone the conflicts fought on distant alien worlds. The walls had stood since their birth, and stories held tight in the throats of their elders carried little weight without the foundation of experience. They did not understand the horror that calls heroism to the fore, nor that heroes pay for fame in broken bodies and dead friends. Past strife became a tangled myth in youthful minds; an allegory of forgotten lessons amidst the City’s stability.

Their naivety warms his heart. For all the danger washing up against the gates, this day is safe. Innocence can be coddled a little longer, and maybe there will soon be a time when the people of the City remember nothing but peace.

2. SOCIAL GRACES

A quiet dusk settles, revealing cinder-orange blankets within bands of receding blue sky as shadows spill from the western wall. Congregations under the streetlights that were brought on by the Almighty’s destruction had slowly died down since the arrival of the Black Fleet; their revelry laid to rest in tombs of speculated dread and anxiety.

Titans reinforce aging sections of the wall and patrol the streets. Hunters form recon fireteams and slink into the surrounding wilderness, keeping tabs on enemy movements spurred by the arrival as the cover of night materializes above them. Warlocks gather en masse in the stone gardens beneath the Traveler in a desperate meditation, scouring their Light for signs.

The remnants of socialite resistance steal away to shelters of any kind; a handful of ornery citizens still find refuge above ground in Rehnpeir’s Drunken Noodle Ramen Bar. A few patrons sit behind the massive glass window, and the glow of the Drunken Noodle signage, complete with neon bowl, fills the far wall. Beyond there, shuttered shops loom silently over the shoulders of a patrolling Titan. The ramen shop stands alone, alive in a faint glow and the wafting scent of hot broth that press back the depression of nightfall.

“Lockdown after lockdown. I’m sick of curfews,” Frank sighs. “I understood it for the Almighty, but this?”

“The Commander will handle it,” Rehnpeir says and leans over the bar counter, refilling glasses and bowls with sustenance.

“Please…” Frank’s voice is thick with sarcasm.

“I don’t see a ship crashing down anymore, do you? He did it before, and he’ll do it again.”

Distant melancholy hymns ebb and flow outside as the voice of a chorus rises beneath the waves of music.

A young woman name Milley speaks up from a secluded corner table. “Zavala’s a politician. What’s he going to say, ‘People of the City, you’re all going to die.’?” She shifts in her chair. “He rolled the dice on the Almighty and got bailed out. Guardians didn’t do squat.”

“Oh yeah? Big talk from someone living in their walls, under their Traveler,” Jean, an old regular, calls back.

“I was born here, ma’am.” The title drips with derision. “And now, there ain’t anywhere else left to go,” Milley snipes.

“Used to be, wasn’t anywhere to go. Period,” Jean says and glares.

Frank nods at Milley. “Look. Guardians have had years and years, and we’re still stuck in one spot. They’re just in it for glory; they love running around on their little missions, playing hero.” He leans back and speaks loudly. “Listen to how Shaxx yells from up in their tower. Not one word about the little guy.”

Rehnpeir cuts in. “Frank, you’d be dead in two seconds out there, and Milley… your mother was coughing up blood before—”

“Before! Before, before… it’s the same words coming out of all you geezers. You’re all so caught up talking about before. What about now?” Milley asks and slaps her hand down on her table.

The not-so-distant chorus turns onto the Drunken Noodle’s street. Deeper tones of their hymn, now full and symphonic with the backing of a hundred voices, bleed into a funeral dirge. Several of the restaurant patrons, as well as Rehnpeir, crane to see the procession.

“Dead Orbit freaks. Traveler’s done good by us. Some of you don’t appreciate what you have,” Jean interjects.

“I’m with Milley. Guardians aren’t here for us; Traveler’s looking out for itself. Legion hit us, and it didn’t do jack until its life was on the line,” Frank says. He stares at his bowl before turning to view the procession through the window. “It just sat there, while our homes burned. I lost my son on Titan. We don’t even have his body.”

A host of citizens led by a crier in Dead Orbit black flow down the stone road. The crier’s voice is crisp as they call for unity—speaking of warnings unheeded. Pleading for the like-minded to join the procession. Promising hope. Seeking to shepherd others to the intangible beyond.

Rehnpeir refills Frank’s glass with mead. “We all mourned Henry with you, Frank—”

“It’s crisis after crisis; living scared and losing. This place was supposed to be safe. Instead, we’ve all paid. It’s time the Traveler pulls its weight,” Milley says, riding the wave of Frank’s frustration.

Her argument is interrupted by the commotion outside, where a Guardian watches over the procession from the opposite side of the street. She does not flinch as a hurled bottle shatters against her helmet. Spit, glass, and stinging words. Her weapons remain slung. Her Ghost, concealed.

The dirge wanes and moves on.

Rehnpeir breaks the eerie hold first. “The Traveler will. They all will. We’re here, aren’t we? They won the City back.” He points through the window. “They brought a man back from the dead!”

“Death doesn’t mean anything to them. They never suffer the consequences, and you expect them to understand what it feels like?” Frank exhales, voice tremoring.

“You’re talking out your ass. Saint-14… When I was a girl, he was like a giant… He could do anything—he would do anything to help. You don’t know how it was. Guardians will get it done,” Jean says and crosses her arms.

“We’ll see,” Milley replies, slurping through a mouth half full of noodles.

Quiet night settles back in the ramen bar’s atmosphere. Warmth soothes unrest; the shrill violin stroke fades.

“Glad we got that out.” Rehnpeir thumps a fist against the counter twice. He looks at his patrons’ grave faces. “Sake?”

3. REFUGE

Dead Orbit ships sweep away the clouds around the Traveler as midnight approaches. He keeps his ring by the door—in case he has to leave. He only keeps one magazine loaded, but loose brass rounds fill the gaps inside the go-bag under the coat rack.

“If they hit, they’ll come here.” That’s what she always says. “Right here.” But Lissa was born here, and she hadn’t been out there like he had.

He doesn’t know if they can leave before that happens. Gravity dragged them back here twice before: two failed excursions, though they were solitary exercises. Surely the world would kick them back again, just like it always did.

“Third time’s the charm. You’ll have me. And we’ll have one of the Free Capitals. Lightless and away from all this.” Her latest appeal to leave.

The Free Capitals are just rumors, buried cave-cities that pre-date the Golden Age. He had listened to patrons in his brother’s ramen house sling stories back and forth over mead and sake. No one has been there; everyone has met someone who knows someone who has a story about where these cities are… but there had to be other people out there. After all, they came to the City from somewhere. He’s sure there are other somewheres out there, without so much noise.

Quiet. All day, there was nothing, and he can’t get it out of his head. He needs something to fill the void that isn’t talking or is at least talking about something that doesn’t matter. Every person, every wave-band station is just an opinionated jukebox of the same 20 tunes.

Skyward eyes. A bilious wave creeps over his stomach. Equilibrium flexes. His vision goes concave for a moment, like a singularity pinching at four points deep in the sky. Is the ground moving? Gone.

He rubs his eyes until his vision runs blurry. Everything is normal.

He wants to walk through the trees outside to where the Firebreakers made their stand. To clear his mind.

There is too much noise.

Hunters come and go, returning bloodied with alarming frequency. Future War Cultists welcome offloading refugees to the final battle with wide smiles. Fewer caravans appear. It’s mostly jumpships now, Dead Orbit over the Tower hangar.

His mother used to tell him the Guardians held the City at Six Fronts; they held at Twilight Gap, and they will hold so long as we still have hope in them. They wouldn’t lose to this. They wouldn’t leave for this. Third time’s the charm.

Almost Seven

On this day, six years ago, players all over the world began a grand adventure. Since then, over 167 million Guardians have joined our ranks and championed the Light for over 8.6 billion hours.

During that time, this community has answered the call time and time again, raising over $8.5 million for Little Lights and worthy causes all over the world. So, when it comes to defending humanity, whether you’re in the 31% that smash, the 31% that love space magic, or the 38% that make cloaks look good, we’re humbled that you have chosen to make the Tower your home.

And now, as we stand at the precipice of a new era, ready to step beyond the Light, we should at least have some cake first. So, let’s light the candles and celebrate with the friends we’ve made in this truly incredible community. From the Farm to the Moon, it’s been a wild ride and we’re incredibly proud to have you at our sides for all of it. Here’s to the future – happy birthday, Destiny.

Keep reading for a few birthday surprises to help you join the celebration as well as a couple of updates on new ways to play our favorite game.

Destiny Birthday Cake

Infinite cake technology still eludes us, but Victoria Rosenthal is getting closer! Not one to slow down after knocking it out of the park with the official Destiny cookbook, she’s here to share her “Infinite Forest” Chocolate Cake with all of us. Find all the instructions you’ll need to transmat yours below.

Difficulty: Hard

Prep Time: 24 hours

Cook Time: 2 hours

Servings: 1 cake

Dietary Notes: Dairy

Cherry Filling Ingredients:

¾ pound cherries (fresh or frozen), pitted and cut in half

2 tbsp water

3 tbsp honey

¼ cup sugar

The night before, combine cherries, water, honey, and sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 30 minutes (if using frozen cherries, simmer for about 45 minutes). Cook until the liquid has reduced by ¼. Place the mixture in a bowl, cover, and allow to rest in the refrigerator overnight.

Cake Ingredients:

¾ cup cocoa powder

⅓ cup cherry fruit spread

¾ cup hot water

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

1 ½ cups sugar

2 eggs, room temperature

1 tbsp vanilla extract

¾ cup sour cream

Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk together cocoa powder, cherry fruit spread, and hot water in a small bowl. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time. Mix in vanilla extract. Add the cocoa powder mixture.

Mix in half of the flour until it just comes together. Mix in the sour cream. Add the remainder of the flour and mix until fully combined.

Spray two 9-inch baking pans with nonstick spray. Split the batter between the two pans and place in the oven to bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until done. Remove the cakes from the baking pans and allow to cool completely.

Frosting Ingredients:

1 ½ cups butter, room temperature

16 oz cream cheese, room temperature

½ tbsp vanilla extract

¼ cup maraschino cherry liqueur

4 cups confectioners’ sugar

Place the cream cheese and butter in a large bowl and mix together. Add the vanilla extract and maraschino cherry liqueur. Once mixed together, begin to slowly add the confectioners’ sugar. Whisk until the frosting thickens.

Additional Ingredients:

Fresh cherries to top, optional

To assemble the cake, make sure both cake layers are level. Place the bottom layer on a plate and top with a portion of the frosting. Add the cherry filling in the center, spreading it close to the edge but not completely. Cover the filling with additional frosting. Top with the other layer of cake. Top with the remaining frosting. Decorate with fresh cherries on top.

Beyond Light Stasis Deep Dives

Last week, we began unveiling details around the three new Stasis subclasses in Beyond Light. Starting with the Warlock Shadebinder, we followed that up with the Titan Behemoth. The final deep dive focusing on the Hunter Revenant went live yesterday. They’re a fantastic read if we do say so ourselves and (much like a fireteam) function as three pieces of a whole. So, in case you missed any, you can find them here:

Now let’s blow out these candles, get our coats, and dance with the Darkness.
