Since the arrival of the Switch 2 last year, many third-party developers have been updating their existing Switch games for Nintendo’s new hybrid system.
With this in mind, Psyonix’s latest update for its vehicular soccer game Rocket League has today added Switch 2 visual and performance improvements. This includes simplified graphics settings, improved resolution and visual quality upgrades.
Here’s the segment from v2.64 patch notes detailing the Switch 2 rendering enhancements:
Rocket League – Nintendo Switch 2 Rendering Enhancements (22nd January, 2026)
We’ve made a series of visual and performance improvements for Rocket League on Nintendo Switch 2.
Simplified Graphics Settings
The Performance/Quality toggle has been removed, as Rocket League on Nintendo Switch 2 now uses the best of both settings.
Improved Resolution
Docked mode: Resolution is now locked at 1080p, 60 FPS in docked mode.
Handheld mode: Dynamic resolution now targets 1080p at 60 FPS, but will still reduce resolution as needed to keep gameplay smooth.
Visual Quality Upgrades
Increased world detail
Higher texture quality in handheld mode, matching docked mode
Crisper texture detail with increased anisotropic filtering (reduces jagged lines and blurry edges on surfaces)
Improved lighting effects
Ambient occlusion
Higher-resolution shadows
You can see the other content in this latest update on Rocket League’s official website. Rocket League is free-to-play, and this is a free update, so you’ll just need to have access to a Switch 2 to see these enhancements in action.
Rocket League originally arrived on the Switch eShop in 2017. You can find out more about it in our Nintendo Life review.

Now, look, the ‘Nintendo Switch 2 Edition’ re-releases have been fighting a losing battle as far as box art is concerned. Those unwieldy titles take up more than enough room themselves, and then they add all of that “Includes the Nintendo Switch game and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack. Upgrade pack also available separately. For details…” at the bottom. But worse than that is the key art ‘split’, where the old and new designs are slapped together to presumably sell the idea of ‘See? This is the same as the one before, but now with a new bit too!’
We saw it used for Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and the Forgotten Land‘s physical release, but there’s something about the Mario Wonder design that’s just rubbing us up the wrong way. We’re not sure whether it’s the straight line between the two graphics, the busyness of both of them, that giant ‘Bellabel Park’ icon, or a mixture of everything else, but gosh, it ain’t a looker, is it?
Image: Nintendo
Of course, most of us here at Nintendo Life will be playing via an Upgrade Pack (and we’d wager many of you will be in the same boat), so it’s unlikely that such an overdesigned cover will ever grace many of our shelves. That said, we can’t help but feel like the ‘Nintendo Switch 2 Edition’ designs — for the re-releases, not the simultaneous launches like Pokémon Legends: Z-A or Metroid Prime 4, we should point out — are getting a bit out of hand now.
Those still keen to pick up a copy can do so on 26th March. That very same day, Nintendo is launching a trio of Wonder amiibo and the Talking Flower figure, so prepare to splash the cash if you’re hoping to catch ’em all.
What do you make of the new cover art? Is it the worst one yet? Let us know in the comments.

So that’s your lot for this week’s North American Nintendo Download. Go on, be a sport and drop a vote in the poll above, and comment below with your hot picks!
If this month’s Pokémon and Ocarina of Time sets didn’t break the bank for you, LEGO and Nintendo have today teased another entry in the ‘Adult’ Mario Kart line, and it looks like the brother in green is taking centre stage.
The tease in question was shared to Nintendo of America and LEGO socials, and sees last year’s Mario Kart set geared up and ready to go before a mysterious figure emerges on the right side of the screen. It’s far from a detailed look at the set, but the green cap, arm, and accompanying caption, “Racing runs in the family,” all but confirm it.
Neither Nintendo nor LEGO has revealed any pricing information or a release date for the Luigi Mario Kart set just yet, but for reference, the Mario counterpart went up for £149.99 / $169.99 last year, so we’d be surprised if it’s much more than that.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for more information down the line, but gosh, what a year to be a LEGO / Nintendo fan — and what a bad year to be money conscious…
What do you make of this upcoming Luigi set? Let us know in the comments.
It’s lauded as one of the most effective ads ever made, it stunned viewers, but on January 22, during the Super Bowl, “1984” launched the Macintosh without even showing the product once. It almost didn’t make it to air.
This ad is so famous that you know how it goes. An athlete in full color, runs through a gray room full of gray people and she throws a sledgehammer to smash a gray screen.
All of that gray is down to George Orwell’s Big Brother — or as close as could be without paying royalties — and this spark of color represents the Macintosh.
“On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh,” said a text crawl at the end. “And you’ll see why 1984 won’t be like ‘1984’.”
Macintosh. Nobody outside of Apple or perhaps the technology press had heard of it — and even those who knew the name, probably didn’t rate its chances.
This was 1984, three years into the enormous, overwhelming success of the IBM PC. Apple’s famous Apple II computer was showing signs of running out of steam — although its developers wouldn’t appreciate you saying that. The world was choosing Commodore and MS-DOS because they were cheap.
Steve Jobs with an Apple Lisa
Plus everything you think of with the Mac, from a mouse to a graphical screen not very dissimilar to what we have today, that actually was known. It had been released by Apple in the form of the Lisa the year before.
It had been released, but then just about ignored because of its $10,000 price tag. PCs were still expensive compared to what they cost today, but $10,000 in 1983 is around $32,500 in 2026, so, far more than twice the cost of the even most expensive current Mac Pro.
Reputation and baggage
Apple had its fans. They had reason to be fans, but you can only enthuse so much. If people were aware of the reasons to buy Apple, they were also aware of the cost of it, and those two facts were inextricably linked.
And again, only if you were just aware of Apple at that time. You were certainly aware of IBM. There is a case to be made that the point of the “1984” ad was to make people perceive Apple and IBM as the only two players.
It was a perception worth pursuing, but it cost Apple dearly.
According to the 2004 book, “Apple Confidential 2.0” by Owen W. Linzmayer, in 1984 it cost Apple $500 to make each Macintosh on the production line. To be more specific, it was $415 in parts, $5 in labor, and $80 in unspecified overheads.
This is Apple, so it was never going to sell the Mac for $501. Linzmayer claims that at that time, the typical Apple markup would have made it $1,995.
That sounds right to us. Our Managing Editor, Mike Wuerthele worked in an Apple dealership at the time. The margins for the dealers was about 35%, and there was no way that Apple was taking less for itself.
Instead, it sold for $2,495 — and every bit of that $500 more was because of advertising. Apple CEO John Sculley spent as much on advertising as it cost to make a Macintosh.
Part of the original “1984” pitch deck that sold Steve Jobs on the idea — image credit: Apple
The “1984” ad was only the start of what, to be fair, was intended to be a 100-day mass-market saturation of advertising. And saying it was $500 per Mac is an estimate, but it’s the same estimate Sculley made when he authorized spending $15 million on the campaign.
He calculated that the $500 extra on the price would pay back the $15 million once Apple had sold 30,000 Macs. By April 1984, it had sold 50,000.
Of all the advertising Sculley bought with that $500 price increase, though, none was more expensive than the “1984” Super Bowl ad. Ultimately none was more effective too, but then none of the rest of it came so close to being cancelled before it was made.
Putting together “1984”
Not to spoil how this ad and the Mac are so inextricably linked, but ad agency Chiat/Day wrote “Why 1984 won’t be like ‘1984’” for the Apple II. It wasn’t used, and really it was only the start of what the ad would become, but it predated the Mac by six months.
What also predated the Mac was Chiat/Day’s research into the attitude and usage (A&U) of consumers. According to the book “West of Eden” by Frank Rose, Chiat/Day learned that Apple was seen as a young company used by creatives, while IBM was bureaucratic and conservative.
They concluded that “IBM is what people think they ought to be, but Apple is what people feel they’d like to be.” To exploit this, the ad agency had prepared multiple ideas for advertising both the Macintosh and the Apple III.
We’ll talk about the Apple III soon enough. That was a disaster in itself.
Anyway, Clow and Jobs wanted something huge for the first announcement of the Mac. You know where this is going: yes, they wanted an ad called “King Kong Gates.”
It would have had these very large gates, and at the beginning, just a few people would be able to squeeze through. Then the new computer would burst through the gates, followed by thousands of people.
The “1984” ad was written by Steve Hayden — image credit: Ogilvy
Reportedly it was that last part that killed the idea — there was no budget for that many people. And back then, no CGI to fake it.
Whereas there was a budget for what would ultimately become the 200 people in the “1984” ad. Some were already skinheads — a pejorative British term for shaved-head and possibly violent person — and others were paid $125 to shave off their hair.
Steve Jobs adored the idea for “1984.” John Sculley was more wary. The production was ultimately given the go-ahead, though, to be shot in London by Ridley Scott.
Writer Steve Hayden wrote the script, and then director Scott interfered. Scott wanted the face of Big Brother to have spoken dialogue and reportedly threatened to write the lines himself if Hayden didn’t.
Reconsidering “1984”
Once it was finished, Chiat/Day loved the ad, Steve Jobs loved the ad, and John Sculley… wasn’t so sure. At least, he wasn’t until October 23, 1983, which is when the first semi-public screening of the ad took place.
It was at Apple’s annual sales conference, and the reception was ecstatic. All that had to happen now was for Apple’s board of directors to approve it — and they didn’t.
“Most of them felt it was the worst commercial they had ever seen,” said Sculley. “Not a single outside board member liked it.”
It’s unclear quite what happened next as the board either didn’t ask for the ad to be dropped, or it didn’t have the power to. Sculley caved in anyway.
Alongside the $900,000 production cost, the expense of the ad was down to buying the air time and there was still a chance to save some money there. Apple had bought 90 seconds of advertising time at the Super Bowl — 60 seconds for the first, full-length showing, and then another 30-second version to be shown later on.
By then it was very late to sell off an ad, but Chiat/Day was asked to. It did sell off the 30-second slot, but it didn’t even try with the 60-second one, it wanted to make Apple run the ad.
Even then, Apple could still have blown it. Sculley wimped out of deciding whether to run “1984” to fill that slot they had committed $800,000 to. He told Apple’s marketing executives to make the decision — and if necessary to fill the slot with the comparatively safe “Manuals” instead.
“Manuals” worked on the idea that you need manuals to run an IBM PC, but barely a pamphlet for the Macintosh. But it was an ad, it had already been made, and most important of all, it was the right length.
Jobs lobbied hard, Steve Wozniak even offered to pay half the $800,000 if that was the problem. And the two marketing executives, William V. Campbell and E. Floyd Kvamme decided to run it.
The “Manuals” campaign eventually was resurrected for the iMac. Jeff Goldblum narrated it in the famous “there is no step three” ad for the iMac, 15 years later.
The cheapest, most expensive ad ever
So Apple ran its full 60-second version of “1984” during the Super Bowl that year. It did not run its 30-second cut then. Or ever.
Apple never had to buy airtime for its “1984” ad ever again. Because the reaction was so enormous, the response was newsworthy.
The “1984” ad was played in its entirety on news shows around the country. It was played often, it was examined and discussed, and Apple didn’t have to pay a cent more for this incredible exposure.
Advertising isn’t enough
Looked at as a production, as short film, then “1984” is immensely successful. As an advert, it won the 1984 Clio Award.
It later went on to win the Grand Prix at the 31st Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. And in a retrospective, Advertising Age would ultimately call it the 1980s “Commercial of the Decade.”
Nearly 40 years later, Epic Games made a pastiche of “1984”, knowing audiences would get it. Image credit — Epic Games
Yet even in the midst of all this success, Steve Jobs had no illusions about what even extraordinary advertising could do.
“Ad campaigns are necessary for competition; IBM’s ads are everywhere,” he told Playboyin 1985. “But good PR educates people; that’s all it is.”
“You can’t con people in this business,” he continued. “The products speak for themselves.”
If you’ve been keeping up with Final Fantasy VII Remake on the Switch 2, then you’ll probably already know that its direct sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, along with the untitled third entry, will also head to the hybrid console in the future.
Rebirth represents quite a drastic departure from Remake, introducing a vast open world that serves as an almost direct contrast to the tightly-designed environments found in the first entry. This will no doubt sow doubts in fans’ minds about just how well it might hold up on the Switch 2. After all, Rebirth’s visuals were already noted to have suffered from a few downgrades at launch when compared to Remake.
From a gameplay perspective, however, fans can expect parity across all systems with Rebirth and the upcoming third entry. In speaking with Nintendo of Europe, game director Naoki Hamaguchi states that the gameplay experience is “exactly the same”, explaining that any differences might by “confusing for players”.
Here’s what he had to say:
“There’s not a huge amount of information I can share in terms of future games, but I can reassure players that we’re working on the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second game in the series, and the third game too. They are being worked on for Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the other platforms right now.
“One thing to reassure the fans who want to play these games on Nintendo Switch 2: I’ve got a personal policy where I don’t want to make any versions of my games different or offer a different gameplay experience just because they’re on different hardware. That might get confusing for players, and they might wonder which version of the game they should buy. That’s something I’d very much like to avoid. The Nintendo Switch 2 versions are being developed in a way that keeps the gameplay experience pretty much exactly the same as all the other platforms, so I hope this reassures Nintendo Switch 2 players.”
Given that Remake hits the Switch 2 *checks notes*today, it seems likely that we won’t see Rebirth for a little while yet, never mind the mysterious third entry. We’ll be keeping a close eye on any and all developments, however, and let you know as soon as we hear more.
In the meantime, do check our full review for Final Fantasy VII Remake if you haven’t already. We awarded it a score of 9/10, stating that it “makes impressively few compromises” in moving over to the Switch 2.

Poor old Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. The Argonaut Games remaster arrived on Switch on 2nd April, the very same day that we were all distracted by the monster Switch 2 reveal Direct, and those who pre-ordered the physical edition way back in Oct 2024 still have no idea when it’s going to arrive. Talk about a Croc-y start.
The game itself was delayed back in late 2024. After launch, Rock It Games, the company behind the physical, said that tariff issues had “made it temporarily difficult to schedule shipments for some items,” but things were supposedly back on track. Then, following the release of the game’s ‘Platinum Edition’ update last October, the company pushed things again to get the whole game complete on cartridge — “the unavoidable consequence of this upgrade meant delays in the mastering, approval process and physical manufacture of the disc and cartridge with Sony and Nintendo respectively.”
So, where does that leave things now? In a new blog post, Rock It says that “the delays have been unacceptable,” and that going forward, it will be committed to “only offering games once development is complete and our delivery timelines are fully under our control.” But there’s still no firm release date.
According to the post, the game disc and cartridges have now been approved for production by Sony and Nintendo, Platinum Edition update included, and much of the extra merch found in the beefy Collector’s Editions is either complete or arriving in the warehouse by the end of the month.
The thing is, the production updates aren’t consistent between posts — one month, items are complete and ready to go, the next, they’re not. Mix-ups happen, of course, but those who dropped $129.99 on the Collector’s Edition over a year ago are, rightly, after something a little more concrete.
“I have zero trust in Rock It Games because of this,” one user wrote on the r/CrocLegendoftheGobbosReddit, “If they would have just told the truth, and admitted things got screwed up, and didn’t go to plan, I would have been disappointed, but understood.” Others have been so frustrated with the process that they have already requested refunds.
“We’re confident that the regular and Collector’s Editions of Croc are coming soon,” developer Argonaut Games said in an update post on Instagram, “We’re as eager to receive them as all of our customers are!”
When exactly “soon” is remains to be seen, but hey, maybe 2026 will be the year!

The Pokémon Company and Universal Studios have announced that a ‘world class’ Pokémon attraction will be coming to Universal Studios themes parks in Japan and global locations.
Described as an ‘interactive Pokémon experience’ that will “stimulate all five senses”, the attraction will debut at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka before being rolled out globally. This presumably includes parks in Orlando and Los Angeles in the US along with Singapore and Beijing.
Tsunekazu Ishihara, President and CEO of The Pokémon Company, had the following to say:
“Since announcing our medium- to long-term alliance in 2021, we have collaborated with Universal Studios Japan’s outstanding creative vision and world-class technical capabilities to produce a variety of ‘real-life Pokémon experiences,’ including the NO LIMIT! Parade and Halloween show.
“This year marks the 30th anniversary of Pokémon, and we are extremely pleased to be able to fully launch this new project with you all at this major milestone. Our mission is to enrich both the real and virtual worlds through the existence of Pokémon, and we produce Pokémon every day. With this project, too, we hope to create new entertainment that is unique to theme parks, as a rich experience in the real world, and continue to provide surprises to people all over the world.”
There’s no time scale as to when the attraction will launch, but those in Japan can at least look forward to the opening of Poké Park Kanto at Tokyo’s Yomiuriland Amusement Park on 5th February 2026.
In the meantime, we’ll keep an eye out any further developments regarding the new Pokémon attraction at Universal Studios. If nothing else, we’re expecting to see lots and lots (and lots) of new merch.
What do you make of this? Will you be keen to visit one of the Universal Studios destinations when the Pokémon attraction launches? Let us know with a comment.
