Nintendo Restricting Some Image Sharing Features For Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream

Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream

What could be a better prospect for 2026 than creating the perfect island, or pet, or Mii in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream then sharing it online with your friends? For many, sharing their creations on social easily from their Switch consoles at just a few button presses is one of the great joys of modern gaming.

But Nintendo has announced that it’s implementing a handful restrictions on image sharing for the game. In a vague statement on its support pages, Nintendo says that in its commitment “to creating experiences that are welcoming and enjoyable for everyone”, it’s placing “restrictions on certain image sharing features”.

Here’s the full statement from Nintendo:

Nintendo aims to create experiences where players have the freedom to enjoy their Mii characters in their own way. In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream this freedom can sometimes lead to humorous, surprising or unpredictable moments during gameplay.

While these moments are often fun for players, we recognise that out-of-context scenes may be misunderstood or may not reflect the spirit in which the game is intended to be enjoyed.

Nintendo is committed to creating experiences that are welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.

To support this commitment, and in consideration of the unique gameplay in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, we have decided to place restrictions on certain image sharing features. These limits help to make the worlds players create in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream remain fun and safe, and that the game can be enjoyed comfortably by all players.

We understand that some players may find these restrictions limiting. However, they reflect Nintendo’s ongoing philosophy of creating experiences that bring smiles to everyone who plays.

So, not very specific! But Nintendo does outline things a little more clearly over on the Japanese website (via machine translation): “The console’s functions for transferring images to smartphones, posting directly to social media, and automatically uploading images (Nintendo Switch 2 only) will not be available”.

Essentially, automatic transfer to the Nintendo Switch app (on Switch 2), as well as transferring images to your smartphone or posting from your console directly to social media (for both consoles) will be disabled. GameChat on Switch 2 and streaming the game on Twitch or YouTube won’t be restricted.

You can, of course, still take screenshots (at least, we assume so) and use your SD card or connect your Switch console to your PC to transfer photos to your computer and then share them online, but it certainly adds a few extra steps to the process of sharing your ideas and screenshots.

So, why is Nintendo doing this? We can only speculate, but those of you who remember Swapnote might recall that the drawing and photo-sharing service was disabled in 2013 as it was being used “to exchange offensive material”. We have to imagine the company is trying to prevent fans from doing this again, from sharing potentially rude and lewd designs and harmful imagery.

Considering all of the additions, inclusivity, and creativity coming to this Switch sequel, it seems like a strange decision. For a game as social as Tomodachi Life, taking out the convenience of screenshot sharing a little frustrating. It can still be done of course, but it’ll just take a little more effort.

Guide: Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Nintendo Direct: Every Announcement – How Would You Rate It?

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo Life

Well, a new contender for our most-anticipated game of 2026 just appeared. Nintendo has spilled the beans on Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, with a 22-minute Direct positively packed with info on the slice-of-life sequel.

The most important detail — so important that we’ll stick it up the top here — is that Living the Dream will arrive on Switch 1 on 16th April 2026. That gives you just two and a half months to brush up on everything the game has in store, so let’s get to it!

Below, we have broken down every announcement from the Direct in chronological order. We’ve also included a poll at the bottom so you can let us know what you made of the whole thing.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct – The Full Presentation

Just in case you haven’t watched the Direct yet, we’ll start by sticking the full presentation here so you know what we’re talking about in the following list.

We also wouldn’t blame you if you simply want to watch it again, just so you know…

What was the difference between the US and UK Directs?

And what’s this? The Direct showcased different footage depending on which regional YouTube channel you were watching! The changes are subtle, we’ll admit, mostly switching up the ‘protagonist’ Mii’s appearance and some food choices along the way (pizza in the UK stream was noodles in the Japanese one). There’s also a different narrator by region, of course.

We’ve relied on the North American version (above) for this breakdown, but be sure to head over to the Nintendo UK and Japanese channels to see some more variants.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct Round Up

Okay, now let’s break down all of those announcements and reveals, starting with the most important factor of all: Mii customisation!

Mii Customisation

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

Much like the Switch version of Miitopia before it, Living the Dream boasts a huge number of Mii customisation options, so you can get your avatar looking just how you want them.

We spied a huge number of hairstyles (with bonus ‘bangs’ and ‘back’ options), hair dye potential, noses, and even ear shapes. There even seems to be a few more personality questions this time around, so you can fine-tune the Mii’s Movement, Speech, Energy, Thinking, and ‘Overall’ levels.

And once all of that is out of the way, you can then add face paint to the Miis for an extra touch of detail.

You can either make a Mii from scratch, choosing all their features and personality traits, or by answering questions about their look.

Gender and Dating Preferences

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

One of the hot topics of the original game’s 3DS release was the absence of same-sex marriage. While the Direct didn’t outright confirm anything on this front, it did flag that you can now choose each Mii’s dating preferences, with Male, Female, and Nonbinary options all available.

Those three options also apply to which gender you’d like your Mii to be.

Move Those Miis

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

If you want specific Miis to interact, you’ll have to pick them up and move them. This can be used to initiate friendships, romances, or just to see how a certain person will react to a newly-placed object on the island.

Once you get two Miis chatting, you can choose conversation topics for them to cover and help them hit things off.

Times They Are A-Changing

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

Like the initial game, helped along by some Animal Crossing: New Horizons good times, no doubt, time in Living the Dream moves just like it does in the real world; this means that even when you aren’t playing the game, the Mii will continue to live their lives.

Shopping Spree

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

We were introduced to a bunch of Living the Dream shops in this Direct. Here’s a rundown of each one we’ve seen so far:

  • Fresh Kingdom – Food mart
  • Where & Wear – Clothes and costumes
  • News Station – Your source for all things happening on the island
  • T&C Reno – Room interiors
  • Marketplace – Mystery goods that change based on the time of day
  • Foto-Tomo – Photo studio
  • Quik Build – Decorative island items and terraforming
  • Palette House – Customisations and designs

Island Greenery

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

You can add plants, flowers and trees to your island! These can either come in the form of resident suggestions or be hand-placed by you.

It’s just a taste of the improved island customisation in store. Speaking of which…

Island Customisation

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

With yet another page out of the New Horizons playbook, Living the Dream boasts massive island customisation options, giving you the chance to move people’s houses, build designated activity areas, and terraform the space to your liking.

Little Quirks

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

Mii characters can be gifted ‘Little Quirks’, which, as you might expect, make small tweaks to their personalities. This can be as major as walking styles and idle animations, or as specific as how they eat their food.

And yes, phrases are back in this sequel too, so you can choose what comes out of your islanders’ mouths at select moments.

Relationships

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

Yep, they’re back, and they seem to be more important than ever. The Direct showcased crushes, flirting, love and heartbreak all in the span of 20 minutes — talk about a whirlwind, eh?

Palette House

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

This store is your one-stop shop for all things design and customisation. You can design a little pet to follow a Mii around, latte foam art, clothing, building exteriors and more.

Roommates

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

When they are good enough friends, two Miis might choose to live together. Successfully becoming roommates will change how the characters interact, and you can have up to eight Miis living together at once.

Marriage and Babies

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

And finally, if all of that romancing works out, Mii couples can once again get married and have children together. Aw, isn’t love wonderful!

Poll – How Would You Rate It?

Phew, that was pretty jam-packed! All of that information has certainly got us excited about Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, but what about you? You can let us know what you made of the Direct in the poll below.

Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Will Allow Same-Sex Relationships & Non-Binary Miis

Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream
Image: Nintendo

Tomodachi Life fans have a lot to celebrate today. Along with a release date for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Nintendo has confirm that players will be able to create non-binary Miis in the new game and that they’ll be able to select dating preferences for their characters.

This was all confirmed in today’s Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Nintendo Direct, and in a game where customisation and creation is off-the-charts, more gender and relationship options should be a given. It should’ve been a given in 2013, but Nintendo is making up for it this time around.

Now, when creating your Mii, you’ll be able to select from three genders: Male, Female, and Non-binary. And you can also select your Mii’s dating preferences, again between the three gender options. You can select one, more than one, or none of them. Essentially, you can date whoever you want — or no one at all — catering to gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, aromantic, asexual, and all sorts of LGBTQIA+ relationships.

This is a huge win for many fans of Tomodachi Life on the 3DS, which drew criticism back when it released in Japan in 2013. Initially, a bug appeared to allow same-sex relationships in-game, which Nintendo later patched out. Nintendo followed up the patch with some clarifications, but fans were understandably still unhappy that the option to date whoever they wanted wasn’t available.

This prompted the ‘Miiquality’ social media campaign ahead of the game’s Western release, with Nintendo of America addressing the controversy shortly after. Then, two days later, the company issued an apology, stating “if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.”

And, given today’s Nintendo Direct, it seems like the developers have stuck to their promise, which is fantastic to see. Now we can all spend time with Hugh Morris however we want, romantically or not.

In an ideal world, this news would be a non-story in 2026, but we’ve taken the decision to disable comments on this article.

If you’re not familiar with the original controversy surrounding the 3DS game and are interested in a contemporary account outlining the situation, our editorial statement from 2014 provides valuable context.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. Lands March Release Date On Switch 2

After being announced for Switch 2 way back in May 2025, SEGA has today revealed that Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage will mark the series’ long-awaited debut on a Nintendo system on 26th March.

For those who have missed the details up to this point, this Switch 2 release features full cross-play, so you can battle it out with pals on other consoles as well as rollback netcode support, balance updates, training tweaks, and new moves and combos to slip into your fighting style.

It serves as a pretty beefy upgrade to the original 2007 game, with the drastically improved visuals showing just how far we’ve come in the last… 20 years *gulp* R.E.V.O. launched on PS5, Steam and Xbox Platforms back in October 2025, where it went on to pick up some pretty strong reviews — it currently sits at a Metascore of 78 based on 15 critic reviews.

If this all sounds very much up your street, the game’s Open Beta Test kicks off on 18th February, designed to test “network servers and cross-play performance for the game with the other available platforms,” says SEGA. You’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to get involved, obviously, but it’ll be a good chance to see what the game’s all about.

If you’re already certain that you’re going pick it up, however, then you’ll be pleased to hear that pre-orders open today! You can pick up the standard digital edition for $19.99, or the digital 30th Anniversary Edition for $49.99, which includes all kinds of bonuses like the Legendary and Yakuza DLC packs, the swimsuit costume set, pre-production artwork and more. As with the majority of Sega’s Switch 2 output, the physical version is a Game-Key Card.

A physical release of the 30th Anniversary Edition is also available for $49.99, including all of the gubbins outlined above and with a double-sided poster to boot.

Will you be checking out Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. on Switch 2? Let us know in the comments.

UK Retailer GAME Is Reportedly On The Verge Of Collapse Once Again

GAME
Image: Nintendo Life

UK retailer GAME has reportedly filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators in a clear sign that the firm is once again on the brink of collapse.

As reported by Bloomberg and The Business Desk, GAME – which is owned by Frasers Group – has appointed law firm RPC to oversee the 10-day protection period from creditor action while it considers any potential next steps. What those steps might be at this stage is unclear.

Of course, this isn’t the first time GAME has fallen into administration – it happened before back in 2012, resulting in the closure of 277 stores in the UK and 2,104 job losses. You might remember shortly before this that several major game publishers refused to provide stock for GAME, with Mass Effect 3 being a particularly high-profile release that simply wasn’t available at the retailer.

Private equity firm OpCapita purchased GAME one week after it fell into administration, subsequently selling the business to Frasers Group in 2019. Since then, standalone stores across the country have been closing down in favour of concession stores within Sports Direct. Additionally, GAME no longer stocks pre-owned games, and its reward scheme has gone the way of the Dodo.

To cap it off, the Basingstoke Head Office fully closed down in 2025.

We’ll keep an eye on how things pan out with GAME over the coming days and weeks, but we’re not wholly convinced anybody is going to be keen on saving it this time around. Nothing would thrill us more than to see GAME pulled from the brink and transformed into a thriving specialised retailer that stocks unique, bespoke physical games. But that’s probably wishful thinking at this stage.

What are your thoughts on GAME reportedly entering administration again? Leave a comment in the usual place and let us know.

Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Moves In On Switch 1 This April

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
Image: Nintendo

After one of the funniest Directs in recent memory, Nintendo announced that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will be arriving on Switch on 16th April.

The Direct showcased a bunch of fun features that we can expect to find in the slice-of-life sequel, including a huge number of character customisation options, personality quirks, more design possibilities than we ever thought possible, and Hugh Morris — the jolly jester from the trailer that we’re now campaigning to get in Smash Bros.

And yes, it’ll all be compatible with Switch 2. Whether there are any bonus features on the new hardware remains to be seen, but hey, we’re excited!

All in all, we’re rather obsessed with what we’ve seen so far! We’ll be counting down the days until this one finally comes our way later this year.

What do you make of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream after today’s Direct? Let us know in the comments.

Random: This Fan Is Ripping Nintendo’s Finest Tunes From Vinyl, Including The 3DS Menu Theme

Update #2 []: Some errors and unclear language in the original article were brought to our attention – we’ve amended the headline and text to make clear that Huappy Spins has not manufactured these vinyl records that feature on the channel, and that many of them are indeed available for purchase from official sources. We apologise for the error.

Update #1 []: Hmm. As you can see, the 3DS video has been made private, although other videos on the channel still appear as before. We’ll keep an eye on things and let you know if/when this masterpiece returns.

Original Story: Nintendo is no stranger to a banging soundtrack. The company also isn’t wholly against releasing said soundtracks on vinyl — Breath of the Wild is scoring an eight-LP box set later this year, for example — but there’s no way that the House of Mario could possibly cover everything in delightful disc form. That’s where fans like Huappy Spins come in.

We weren’t aware of Huappy Spins’ work in showcasing Nintendo-related vinyl until this week, when we first spotted the pressing of ‘The Sounds of the Nintendo 3DS‘ above. Being the big old nerds that we are, we gobbled the whole thing up in one sitting, vibing to familiar bops like ‘Home Menu’ and ‘Mii Maker’, shedding a tear for the loss of Miiverse and its impeccable tunes, and pouring one out for forgotten classics like ‘Activity Log Software Library’.

Sure, it’s a digital recording of a vinyl playing a digital soundtrack, but you can’t tell us that there isn’t something satisfying about seeing those familiar beeps and boops come from a spinning plastic disc.

So, you can only imagine our joy when we took a look through Huappy Spins’ account, which highlights vinyl releases — official and otherwise — from other sources, and saw a huge back catalogue of Nintendo soundtracks that they have ripped in the past. There’s a vinyl for Mario Party 2, Yoshi’s Woolly World, The Minish Cap and Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow. They’ve even sorted releases for indies and third-party releases that we’ve poured hours into on Nintendo systems, like Stardew Valley, Spiritfarer, Citizen Sleeper and this writer’s beloved Professor Layton and the Curious Village.

All of these pressings appear on a colourful vinyl — often matching the game itself — with unique centre stickers to really sell the listening vibes. The thumbnails for each show off the neat original sleeve artwork for each LP.

While some appear to be bootlegs, many are available to purchase from outfits such as iam8bit, Kontakt Audio, Fangamer, Mana Wave, and Black Screen Records, and there are worse ways to spend an afternoon than by listening to some of your favourite soundtracks as a colourful disc spins around on your screen.

In fact, we’ll finish by linking to a couple more of our favourites below. Happy listening!

What do you make of these vinyl recordings? Which is your favourite? Let us know in the comments.

Apple Design Team gains Halide co-founder, but the pro camera app isn’t going anywhere

Sebastiaan de With is the co-founder of Lux, maker of Halide, and formerly worked on the iCloud and Find My teams at Apple, but now he’s set to return to Apple and is joining the Design Team.

Apple is such a secretive company that its employees tend to go about their business as unknown entities. However, the company does hire figures from the Apple community from time to time, and when they’re prominent, like Serenity Caldwell, their sudden disappearance into Apple Park is immediately noticed.

On Wednesday evening, Sebastiaan de With, co-founder of Lux and maker of pro camera app Halide, shared that he is joining Apple. He previously worked for Apple on the iCloud/MobileMe team and also worked on Find My.

This time, he’s joining Apple’s Design Team, which is significant given the absolutely incredible work that has gone into his apps like Halide, Kino, and Spectre. One could hope that he’ll help revitalize the Apple Camera app.

Some big personal news: I’ve joined the Design Team at Apple.

So excited to work with the very best team in the world on my favorite products.

— Sebastiaan de With (@sdw.bsky.social) Jan 28, 2026 at 4:41 PM

AppleInsider reached out to Ben Sandofsky, the other Lux co-founder, and asked about the future of Lux. He had just released a preview of Halide Mark III hours ago, and shared a statement with us, embedded below.

I’ve never been more optimistic about the future of Lux and Halide. Today we launched the public preview of Halide Mark III, and the reception is more positive than we possibly could have hoped.

As we mentioned in the announcement post today, we’ve been working with legendary team at The Iconfactory on Mark III. We’re also super excited to be collaborating with the renowned colorist Cullen Kelly on the new looks in Mark III.

Ten years ago I started Halide, and for ten years, I lead product, ran the business, and coded almost everything. Except for the paywall. I hate working on payment screens. But I built everything else, and design was always a collaborative experience.

So in short, Halide is going nowhere. This has been my full time job since 2019, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Clearly, Lux has zero plans of going anywhere, so fans don’t need to worry.

Whatever Apple’s plans for Sebastiaan de With, he will surely be an excellent addition to the Design Team. There may still be time for him to contribute some refinements to iOS 27, but his influence will likely slowly show up through the update cycle.
