How to Create a Smartwatch in Cinema 4D: Part 1

Final product image
What You’ll Be Creating

Follow this tutorial step-by-step to create a 3D Smartwatch model that you can use in video games, graphic design and illustration projects whilst learning Cinema 4D quickly.

Some of the skills you’ll learn in this tutorial include creating basic 3D modelling, importing reference images, adding lighting to the scene and basic rendering techniques.

In this, the first part of the two-part tutorial, I’ll show you:

  • How to Import Reference Images
  • How to Prepare for Modelling
  • How to Model the Smartwatch

1. How to Import Reference Images

Step 1

Use the middle mouse button to click anywhere on the viewport. This displays all four views. From there, use the middle mouse button to select the Right view.

Cinema 4D views

Step 2

In the Attributes tab select Mode > View Settings.

View settings

Step 3

In Viewport [Right] select the Back button and click on the button next to Image.

Choose back button

Step 4

Select the reference image from the finder and open it.

Reference image displayed

Step 5

Once the image is displayed in the background of the viewport, change the transparency of the image. This can sometimes make it easier to model from the reference image.

Change the position and size of the reference image from here using Offset X, Offset Y, Size X and Size Y.

Adjust the transparency

2. How to Model the Watch Face

Step 1

To start modelling the face of the Smartwatch, select the Cube object from the top menu bar. This spawns a cube in the viewport.

Select Cube from the menu

Step 2

Use the reference image of the Smartwatch in the Front View to help adjust the cube.

Use the Scale Tool to make the shape of the cube match up with the shape of the Smartwatch in the image.

Ensure that you use the other views (front, left, right, perspective etc) to check that the shape looks correct from every angle.

Transform the cube to fit reference image

Step 3

With the object still selected, use the mouse to click the Make Editable button to allow you to adjust the model further.

Clicking the Make Editable button disables the options for when you first spawn the object.

Because of this you must make sure that you are happy with the current shape of the cube before clicking this button.

Select the Make Editable button

Step 4

Select the Edge Selection Tool.

Edge Selection Tool button

Step 5

Use the Edge Selection Tool to select all four corners of the object. The selected edges are highlighted in orange.

Select the edge corners of the cube

Step 6

Once the edges have been selected, use the mouse to right click on the selected edges. In the menu that appears, find Bevel and select it.

Select the Bevel Tool

Step 7

In the adjustment window (usually located in the bottom right of the screen), play around with the following:

  • Bevel Mode: Chamfer
  • Offset Mode: Fixed Distance
  • Offset: 50cm
  • Subdivision: 10
  • Depth: 100%

Feel free to adjust the sliders and values until you are satisfied with the object’s appearance.

Curve the corners of the cube

Step 8

In the images below you can see how the edges are effected once the values have been changed.

Use the reference image of the Smartwatch in the Front View to help whilst you adjust the corners.

Use reference image

Step 9

Click on the small black arrow in the bottom right corner of the Bend Tool in the top menu bar. Select Bevel from the list. This creates a Bevel tool in the list of objects on the right of the screen.

Choose Bevel button from top menu

Step 10

Select the Bevel tool and drag it into the Cube object. This will apply the bevel features to the cube.

Bevel in listed view

Step 11

Ensuring that the Bevel tool is selected in the object list, use the adjustments window to change the way that the bevel works.

For this tutorial, the following are used:

  • Use Angle: Tick
  • Angle Threshold: 68 Degrees
  • Bevel Mode: Chamfer
  • Offset Mode: Radial
  • Offset: 20cm
  • Subdivision: 6

Feel free to adjust the sliders and values until you are satisfied with the object’s appearance.

Adjust the Bevel object settings

Step 12

In the images below you can see how the cube is changed once the values have been changed. This makes the object appear smoother, which correctly matches the appearance of the Smartwatch which is being modelled.

Curved edges

Step 13

For a more stylised and graphical approach, reduce the Bevel Subdivisions to a value of 1.

Simplified edges

Step 14

This gives the Smartwatch a sharper bevel for a more stylised look. However, if you’re going for a more realistic look with a smoother bevel, increase the number of Bevel Subdivisions instead.

Low Poly watch face

3. How to Create the Smartwatch Screen

Step 1

To start modelling the screen of the Smartwatch, duplicate the current object from the list view. Do this by holding CTRL on the keyboard to click and drag a duplicate object.

Duplicate the watch face

Step 2

Remove the Bevel Modifier from the duplicate object.

Remove Bevel

Step 3

Use the Scale Tool to adjust the thickness of the new object.

Ensure that you use the other views (front, left, right, perspective etc) to check that the shape looks correct from every angle.

Scale watch face

Step 4

Once the shape and size of the cube has been adjusted correctly, use the Move Tool to move the screen into position.

Move object into position

4. How to Create the Smartwatch Buttons

Step 1

Click on the small back arrow on the Cube button and select Cylinder from the list of options. This will spawn a Cylinder in the scene.

Select Cylinder from top menu

Step 2

Adjust the properties of the Cylinder so that it is facing the correct way, has the correct size and has the desired thickness for the button.

Use the Move Tool to move the button into the correct place using the background image as the reference.

The settings for the Cylinder are as follows:

  • Radius: 25cm
  • Height: 25cm
  • Height Segments: 1
  • Rotation Segments: 36
  • Orientation: -X
Place button

Step 3

Ensure that the cylinder is selected and click on the Make Editable Button.

Choose Make Editable Button

Step 4

Duplicate the cylinder. This acts as the second button.

Duplicate button

Step 5

Now that the object is editable, edit the points. Ensure the second cylinder object is selected and click on Points Button.

Click on the Rectangle Selection Tool to select the points to edit. Select the points to then move them using the Move Tool.

Select Points Tool

Step 6

Use the Rectangle Selection Tool to select half of the cylinder. Then use the Move Tool to move the points down.

Adjust points

Step 7

To move the two buttons into position, when moving a whole object, select and use the Model button. If this is not selected, you may find that you’ll be moving the points, edges or faces instead.

Select Model button

Step 8

Use the Move Tool to move the two buttons into position.

Move new button into position

Step 9

Ensure that you use the other camera views to ensure that the button placement is correct and moved to the right area.

Check all views

5. How to Create the Watch Strap

Step 1

To start modelling the wrist strap of the Smartwatch, select the Cube object from the top menu bar.

This spawns a cube in the viewport.

Choose Cube object from menu

Step 2

Adjust the properties of the cube so that it resembles the appearance of a wrist strap. This is usually represented as a very long rectangular shape.

The settings for the strap are as follows:

  • Size X: 230 cm
  • Size Y: 1000 cm
  • Size Z: 45 cm
Adjust cube to make strap shape

Step 3

In order for the shape to bend correctly, width segments must be added to the object. For a smoother bend more segments should be added (Y).

Add segments to watch strap

6. How to use the Bend Deformer

Step 1

In order to create a suitable bend to the wrist strap you will need to use the Bend Deformer. Select the Bend button from the top menu bar.

This spawns a bend deformer object in the list view.

Select Bender deformer from menu

Step 2

In the list view move the Bend Deformer into the watch strap object. This means that the deformer will affect and influence the watch strap object only.

Move bend deformer in list menu

Step 3

With the Bend Deformer selected make sure that Fit to Parent has been ticked. The ensures that the deformer affects the whole watch strap.

Click fit to Parent

Step 4

With the Bend Deformer still selected, go to the parameters box and play around with the Strength

In this tutorial I used the following settings:

  • Strength: 180
  • Angle: 90
Adjust Bend Derformer parameters

Step 5

In the list view, select the watch strap object again and use the Rotate and Move tools to move it to the correct position on the smart watch.

Move and rotate strap into place

7. How to Complete the Watch Strap

Step 1

In order to edit the watch strap further click the Make Editable button on the top left corner of the screen.

Select Make Editable button

Step 2

Choose the Polygon Tool and use the Move Tool to extend the tip of the watch strap.

You’ll also notice that by going into an edit mode like this disables the Bend Deformer temporarily.

Use Polygon Tool

Step 3

Once you return to Model Mode by clicking on the model button, the strap appears as normal with the extended geometry.

Return to Model Mode

Step 4

Choose the Edge Tool from the left menu.

Choose Edge Tool

Step 5

Use the Edge Tool and the Selection Tool to select the edges of the extended strap.

Select watch strap edges

Step 6

With the edges still selected, use the Bevel Tool to curve the edges.

Select the Bevel Tool

Step 7

In the edit window, change the settings to the following:

  • Bevel Mode: Chamfer
  • Offset Mode: Fixed Distance
  • Offset: 72 cm
  • Subdivision: 30
  • Depth: 100%
Bevel the corners of the watch strap

Step 8

Return to Model Mode to see how the watch strap looks and finalise any further adjustments you’d like to make.

Once you’re happy with the way it looks, duplicate the watch strap. Do this by holding CTRL on the keyboard to click and drag a duplicate object.

Rotate the duplicate strap by 180 degrees and place it on the bottom of the watch.

New indie games bring even more quality and variety to Nintendo Switch in 2019

New indie games bring even more quality and variety to Nintendo Switch in 2019

The Nintendo Switch system has quickly become the go-to platform for indie developers. As more and more top indie developers bring their creations to Nintendo’s console, they continue to deliver high-quality experiences that can be played at home or taken on the go. A new Nindies Showcase video today demonstrated the breadth of the Nintendo Switch indie library and the enthusiasm developers have for the platform. This includes the revelation of the rhythmic action-adventure game Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring the Legend of Zelda from Brace Yourself Games. That’s in addition to announcements from indie houses like Devolver Digital, bringing system-exclusive content like Katana ZERO and My Friend Pedro, and new game reveals like RAD from award-winning studio DOUBLE FINE PRODUCTIONS.

To view the Nindies Showcase video in its entirety, visit https://live.nintendo.com.

“Top indie developers look to Nintendo Switch to showcase their games to a broad audience,” said Steve Singer, Nintendo of America’s Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations. “The diversity of indie content we discussed today demonstrates how Nintendo Switch players can find quality indie games of nearly any type.”

The games discussed during today’s video include:

  • Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring the Legend of Zelda: In the latest rhythmic action-adventure from Brace Yourself Games, you can enjoy the gameplay of Crypt of the NecroDancer in the setting of The Legend of Zelda series. As Link or Princess Zelda, players explore randomly generated overworld and dungeons on a quest to save Hyrule, and every beat of the 25 remixed Legend of Zelda tunes is a chance to move, attack, defend and more. From modern-looking Lynels to the Hyrulean Soldiers of old, players must master the instinctive movements of each pixel-art enemy and strategically outstep them in rhythmic combat using an arsenal of iconic items from The Legend of Zelda, as well as the spells and weapons from Crypt of the NecroDancer. The game is scheduled to launch this spring.
  • Cuphead: Studio MDHR brings its run-and-gun action game to Nintendo Switch. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, such as traditional hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds and original jazz recordings. The game launches on Nintendo Switch on April 18.
  • Stranger Things 3: The Game: Play through and delve deeper into the events of Stranger Things 3 in a retro-style adventure game from BonusXP. Explore Hawkins, solve puzzles and team up with a friend in local co-op to battle the emerging evils of The Upside Down as one of twelve playable characters from the hit original series. The game launches on Nintendo Switch on July 4, the same day the third season debuts on Netflix.
  • Red Lantern: Timberline Studios, Inc., challenges players to survive the Alaskan tundra with a team of five sled dogs. The Musher becomes lost while training for the grueling Iditarod race and must fend off bears, resist frostbite and take care of the dogs while navigating the wilderness and trying to return home. The game is coming to Nintendo Switch later this year.
  • RAD: DOUBLE FINE PRODUCTIONS and BANDAI NAMCO ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA INC. present a 3D action rogue-like set in a post-post-apocalyptic world. As a teenage protagonist, players must journey into the Fallow, an ever-changing, procedurally generated wasteland that holds the secrets of the past and answers for the future. Here, radioactive toxins will randomly mutate your character, giving you powerful new abilities that challenge you to constantly adapt your play style. Using these abilities and your trusty bat, you have been tasked with saving humanity’s future by healing the world. The game launches on Nintendo Switch this summer.
  • Katana ZERO: Devolver Digital and askiisoft have created a stylish neo-noir action-platformer featuring breakneck action and instant-death combat. Players take on the role of an assassin, the Dragon, to slash, dash and manipulate time to unravel their past in a beautifully brutal acrobatic display. Players can overcome the opposition however the situation requires, as each level is uniquely designed for countless methods of completion. Deflect gunfire back at foes, dodge oncoming attacks and manipulate enemies and environments with traps and explosives. Leave no survivors. The game launches on Nintendo Switch on April 18, and is available for pre-purchase starting today.
  • Nuclear Throne: Vlambeer’s post-apocalyptic roguelike-like top-down shooter challenges players to fight their way through the wastelands with powerful weaponry, collecting radiation to mutate some new limbs and abilities. The game offers 12 playable characters, seven playable main worlds, 30 ways to mutate characters and more than 120 weapons. The game launches on Nintendo Switch – today!
  • Super Crate Box: Vlambeer’s Super Crate Box is coming to bring back the glory of the golden arcade age, when all that really mattered was getting on that high score list. The Nintendo Switch version will include exclusive two-player co-operative and competitive multiplayer for even more arcade mayhem. Prepare for an arcade delight with tight controls, refreshing game mechanics, cracking retro art and a terribly hip chiptune soundtrack when Super Crate Box launches in April.
  • Vlambeer Arcade with ULTRABUGS: Vlambeer Arcade is a collection of bite-sized games with a growing catalog that starts with ULTRABUGS, a fast-paced, high-score-centric game in which players pilot a ship to fight endless space bugs. The only problem is that those bugs then split up into more space bugs when they’re defeated. By beating boss monsters, players will unlock enemy DNA that they can use to customize their ship. Vlambeer Arcade with ULTRABUGS is coming to Nintendo Switch later this year.
  • My Friend Pedro: Devolver Digital and Deadtoast deliver what is undoubtedly the first game about friendship, imagination and one man’s struggle to obliterate anyone in his path at the behest of a sentient banana. Players unleash a torrent of destruction with an incredible level of control over both their weapons and body. They can twist and turn through the air while aiming both hands at priority threats or lining up a perfect ricochet to drop an unsuspecting gangster from behind. The game launches as a system-exclusive on Nintendo Switch in June.
  • Creature in the Well: Flight School Studio challenges players to this top-down, pinball-inspired hack-and-slash dungeon crawler. Players venture deep into a desert mountain haunted by a desperate Creature to restore power to an ancient facility by charging energy orbs and having them bounce around and ricochet to reactivate dormant machinery. They will uncover and upgrade powerful gear to help them save the city of Mirage from a deadly sandstorm. The game launches on Nintendo Switch this summer.
  • Blaster Master Zero 2: INTI CREATES CO. LTD. sets its sequel months after the events of Blaster Master Zero. Jason and Eve must venture into the depths of space to stop the mutant infection that’s slowly corrupting Eve’s body. Thankfully, stopping mutant outbreaks is Jason’s specialty. The game launches on Nintendo Switch – today!
  • Pine: Kongregate and Twirlbound offer a stirring open-world adventure with beautiful biomes to explore, puzzles to solve and secrets to discover. Players take on the role of Hue, a brave young adult who belongs to the last remaining tribe of humans on the island of Albamare. The island’s factions trade and fight with each other over food and territory, while Hue learns about ways to influence the ecology in search for a new home for the humans. The game launches on Nintendo Switch in August.
  • Bloodroots: Paper Cult delivers ultraviolence in a twisted Western revenge tale with a deranged cast of characters. Betrayed and left for dead, Mr. Wolf is hell-bent on finding his attacker and exacting revenge. Players can choreograph spectacular, bloody combos by making use of everything around them, from hatchets and ladders to … carrots? The game launches on Nintendo Switch this summer.
  • Overland: Finji delivers a new game from Adam Saltsman, the creator of Canabalt. In this turn-based survival game, players take care of a group of travelers on a post-apocalyptic road trip across the United States. Fight off scary creatures, rescue stranded survivors and scavenge for supplies like fuel, first aid kits and weapons. There are consequences for every action. The game launches on Nintendo Switch this fall.
  • Darkwood: Acid Wizard Studio and Crunching Koalas set their survivor horror game in East-Central Europe, in a forest possessed by unknown evil forces that corrupt all the inhabitants of the woods: people, animals and even the plants. Players can get new powers by extracting a strange essence from mutated fauna and flora and injecting it into their bloodstream. The game builds an atmospheric, psychological feeling of tension without the usual horror tricks of jump scares and creaking doors. The game launches on Nintendo Switch in May.
  • Neo Cab: Fellow Traveller and Chance Agency offer an emotional survival game about staying human in a world disrupted by automation. Lina, the last human driver on the neon-drenched streets of Los Ojos, California, interacts with a diverse cast of characters with individual story arcs. Players must balance their income, sustain a positive rating and manage their emotions, as fulfilling Lina’s job as a rideshare driver is the only way they might reunite with her best friend Savy, who’s mysteriously gone missing. The game launches on Nintendo Switch this summer.
  • Swimsanity!: Decoy Games takes a deep dive with this multiplayer underwater shooter with action-packed co-op and versus game modes, all supported by online and local play. The game comes with an ocean of content, with more than 150 challenges across eight game modes. Players can toggle between classic dual-stick controls and motion aiming, whether they’re playing locally or online*. The game launches on Nintendo Switch this summer.

To celebrate indie games (and their creators!), Nintendo is offering discounts of up to 30 percent on select indie games currently available in Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch. The sale runs from 10 a.m. PT on March 20 until 8:59 a.m. PT on March 27, and includes standout games like Firewatch from Campo Santo Productions and Yoku’s Island Express from Villa Gorilla and Team 17.

Fend off an alien invasion with the Toy-Con Blaster, visit a colorful in-game ocean and snap photos of the sea life with the Toy-Con Camera and so much more.

Nintendo Labo: VR Kit encourages passing around the Toy-Con creations among a group of people so everyone in the room can easily join in on the fun. To help encourage this social gameplay, players simply slip the Nintendo Switch console into the Toy-Con VR Goggles and hold it up to their eyes to explore numerous games and experiences – no head strap needed.

“This new kit builds on the core tenets of Nintendo Labo – Make, Play and Discover – to introduce virtual reality in a way that’s fun and approachable for both kids and kids at heart,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We wanted to design an experience that encourages both virtual and real-world interactions among players through passing around Toy-Con creations.”

Nintendo Labo: VR Kit will launch in retail stores with two primary configurations, one that includes all Toy-Con creations and one that includes a smaller selection of projects to get started:

  • Nintendo Labo: VR Kit: Available at a suggested retail price of $79.99, the complete Nintendo Labo: VR Kit includes the Nintendo Switch software and materials to build all six Toy-Con projects – the Toy-Con VR Goggles, Toy-Con Blaster, Toy-Con Camera, Toy-Con Bird, Toy-Con Wind Pedal and Toy-Con Elephant – as well as a Screen Holder and Safety Cap. It’s a good option for kids and families who want to dive in to the full experience.
  • Nintendo Labo: VR Kit – Starter Set + Blaster: Available at a suggested retail price of only $39.99, the Starter Set includes the Nintendo Switch software, plus all the components to build the Toy-Con VR Goggles and Toy-Con Blaster, as well as the Screen Holder and Safety Cap. The Starter Set is a great entry point into the world of Nintendo Labo VR.

Players that own the Starter Set can purchase the following optional expansion sets to expand their experience:

  • Nintendo Labo: VR Kit – Expansion Set 1**: Available at a suggested retail price of $19.99, Expansion Set 1 includes the Toy-Con Elephant and Toy-Con Camera.
  • Nintendo Labo: VR Kit – Expansion Set 2**: Available at a suggested retail price of $19.99, Expansion Set 2 includes the Toy-Con Wind Pedal and Toy-Con Bird.

The inventive Toy-Con Garage mode – included as part of all Nintendo Labo software – returns with Nintendo Labo: VR Kit, offering basic programming tools for players to experiment with. More information about the experiences offered by Nintendo Labo: VR Kit will be revealed in the future.

The Nintendo Labo: VR Kit – Starter Set + Blaster and complete Nintendo Labo: VR Kit will be available in stores on April 12. The two expansion sets will be available exclusively online at https://store.nintendo.com/. For more information about Nintendo Labo: VR Kit, visit https://labo.nintendo.com/kits/vr-kit. Remember that Nintendo Switch features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about other features, visit https://www.nintendo.com/switch/.

*Users can easily turn off the VR feature and use the included Screen Holder instead of the VR Goggles to enjoy any of the included games and experiences in 2D.

**The two expansion sets do not include the Toy-Con VR Goggles or Nintendo Labo: VR Kit software.

Put your interior design skills to the test in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

Put your interior design skills to the test in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

Happy Homeroom is now in session! The Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp mobile game just received a major free update that introduces Happy Homeroom, a newly added interior design mini-game where designers in the making can showcase their eye for creativity.

In Happy Homeroom classes, you use the furniture you have to practice your interior design skills. Your finished designs will be judged by Lottie and others, and if you pass Happy Homeroom classes, your HH Rank will increase, earning you items like the HH material and more. The HH materials can be used to make Golden Series furniture, which can be crafted after reaching Amateur Rank 1 in Happy Homeroom.

To access Happy Homeroom, you will need HH Vouchers, which replenish over time, and your Camp Manager Level must be level 6 or above.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp recently incorporated several other additions and features to the game that give campers even more to do, including the following:

  • New Local Produce – Grapes, lemons and lychees are the newest local fruit to be added to the game. While each player has a Local Produce tree in both their Lost Lure Creek and Breezy Hollow locations, they will need to make use of other players’ Market Boxes to obtain the other two regional fruit.
  • Blathers Treasure Trek – A new mini-game that involves rolling die on a map that resembles a board game. Treasure maps earned in this mini-game will reward bells or crafting materials. Special maps will even invite new animals to your campsite!
  • Pete’s Parcel Service – A new and handy way to level up your friendship with animals. By selecting this service, Pete will complete animals requests for you without you needing to visit their locations. What a nice pelican!

To see a new video highlighting all of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp’s latest features and additions, including recently introduced animal friends, the cabin, and more, visit here.

If you haven’t played Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp in a while, now is a great time to jump back in with all of this newly added content! See what’s new by downloading the latest update and launching the game on your mobile device.
