Storytelling in Space: A Q&A with Co-Director of The Outer Worlds
The release of Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds is upon us, and we’re already having a great time exploring the game’s vibrant universe while meeting (and occasionally fighting) some of its fiercest inhabitants. The game combines a darkly humorous narrative and deep RPG elements to create a unique experience. We recently had the chance to chat with Obsidian Entertainment’s Co-Game Director Leonard Boyarsky about the game’s narrative focus, how some of the endings play out, and the ultra-hardcore Supernova mode.
Xbox Wire: How much dialogue was written for The Outer Worlds?
Leonard Boyarsky: I don’t know how much was written (which would include iteration, cut content, etc.), but we have approximately 420,000 words of dialog, including player lines, and approximately 600,000 words total.
Xbox Wire: How do the dialogue trees work in The Outer Worlds compared to your other titles?
Boyarsky: Obsidian has been using the same dialog tool for quite a long time, so I’m not sure there’s much difference in the overall creation of the dialogs. On TOW, though, we tried to get away from using question node hubs in order to get a more conversational feel.
Xbox Wire: How often will players be able to use the gift of gab to get around situations that might lead to combat?
Boyarsky: Players can get through the main story arc pretty effectively using their dialog skills, and there’s a good bit of side content that they can talk their way through as well. We’ve also included passive dialog combat skills for those instances when they do happen to find themselves fighting for their lives, and a disguise system that allows high dialog skill players to talk their way through some specifically combat-related ‘restricted areas’.
Xbox Wire: Have you discussed how many endings The Outer Worlds will have?
Boyarsky: There are two main endings players can play through, but, depending on their skills, there are several approaches they can take within those two endings. And this isn’t counting all the different permutations of end slides players can get, which we have not calculated. Let’s just say there’s a lot.
Xbox Wire: Are those endings dependent on choices you make with dialogue?
Boyarsky: All the endings (including the slides) are dependent on both dialog and gameplay choices the player made throughout the whole game, not just their dialog choices.
Xbox Wire: So, what’s the deal with Supernova Mode?
Boyarsky: Supernova is the hardest difficulty in the game and offers the ultimate challenge for The Outer Worlds.
Xbox Wire: What sort of gameplay challenges will players face when they play Supernova Mode?
Boyarsky: There’s a bunch:
Enemies have more health and do more damage
Players must eat, drink and sleep
Companions can die permanently
Crippled limbs can only be healed through resting
Weapons and armor work very poorly at zero durability
Players can only fast travel to, sleep, and save games inside their ship
Xbox Wire: How does Supernova Mode impact the approach to combat situations?
Boyarsky: Since enemies do more damage and are harder to kill, the player must make sure their equipment (and their companions) are first rate. Use of special attacks at the right time is crucial, and since companions can die, the player needs to watch their health as closely as his own. Perks that let the player heal them with the medical inhaler are very important to take.
Xbox Wire: How did you decide to create Supernova Mode?
Boyarsky: We wanted something hard than Hard and that was reminiscent of Hardcore Mode in Fallout: New Vegas and Ironman Mode in Temple of Elemental Evil. This mode makes replaying the game even more challenging. It’s designed for hardcore players and players who have played through the game multiple times and/or found difficult not challenging enough.

Global second party games head Gio Corsi departs PlayStation
Longtime PlayStation developer and famed PlayStation Vita advocate Gio Corsi has announced his time at the company has come to a close.
“It’s been a hell of a ride but last week was my final one at PlayStation. I’m taking some time off but I will be back in games soon enough,” Corsi shared in a Twitter thread. “I’m extremely proud of all the amazing things we accomplished. Big love to everyone past & present who made my time there truly special.”
Corsi signed on with PlayStation back in 2013 as a senior director on the console maker’s third party production and developer relations arm. His more recent dealings at PlayStation have seen him serve as its head of global second party games, a role he held for nearly two of his six-plus years at PlayStation.
“Finally, a hearty thank-you to all the great devs, pubs, partners, friends & fans who made my time at PlayStation so memorable.. so many cool moments,” tweeted Corsi. “From all the titles, to all the shows, as I said, it was a hell of a ride! Thanks for it all & long love the Vita!”

Video: Addiction science and advice for devs on promoting healthy play
In this 2019 GDC session, Oxford University’s Andrew Przybylski explains why the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have called for studies investigating video game addiction, and what developers can do to help promote healthy play.
It was an interesting talk in which Przybylski explained the specific decisions taken by these health bodies, as well as what scientists know, don’t know, and want to know about problematic play. He also explored the practical implications of the evidence, and shared concrete ways in which developers can help advance science.
In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its accompanying YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.
Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC or VRDC already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. PlayStation Now Adds Three More Games For November On PS4, PC
PlayStation Now recently dropped its price as competition with other game subscription and streaming services heats up, and Sony has announced another three games joining the lineup for the month of November. The company also shared data on the most played games through the service in October. Anything available on the service's streaming selection is playable on your PC too.
The new month will add the acclaimed Japanese RPG Persona 5, action adventure game Middle-earth: Shadow of War, and the indie Metroidvania Hollow Knight. Persona 5 and Shadow of War will be available through February 4, 2020, while no end date was given for Hollow Knight.
October's new additions included God of War, Grand Theft Auto 5, Uncharted 4, and Infamous: Second Son. Each of those are still available through January 2, 2020. Not surprisingly, they're also all on the most played list for the month of October (below).
PlayStation Now began as Sony's streaming-only service, but in 2018 added a download option. Then in October, it dropped the price to $10 per month, making it competitive with Xbox Game Pass. It combined this announcement with limited-time inclusions like God of War.

We just saw some new editions of the Converse Skateboarding CTS model, so let's take a look at what we can all white leather converse expect from One Star's skate division this fall.Pictured above is the likely star of the collection. A midtop CTS, this version features the iconic inner ankle patch found on the original Chuck Taylor All Star. This pair is joined by the Pro Leather lowtop and a new model that appears to be the midtop version of the Pro. The low is built of tonal blue with a white sole and heel, while the mid is red suede with touches of black. ‘iPhone SE 2’ could sell up to 30M units in 2020, says Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple is set to ship between 20 million and 30 million units of the ‘iPhone SE 2’ in calendar year 2020 following its launch, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts, with the successor to the iPhone SE thought to be using a motherboard similar to the SLP version used in the iPhone 11.

Rumors and speculation has Apple working to produce a follow-up to the popular iPhone SE. According to a research note from TF Securities’ analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tentatively-titled ‘iPhone SE 2‘ is expected to sell about the same volumes that the iPhone SE did at its launch.
Kuo believes the ‘iPhone SE 2’ will sell at least 20 million units in its first calendar year of availability. Given the potential popularity of the device, Kuo also offers an optimistic prediction of up to 30 million units, if all goes well for Apple, though this is if Apple does indeed launch the model in the first half of the year as anticipated.
The original iPhone SE sold in the region of 30 million units in the first year of availability, putting the second-generation version slightly behind the first. However, the ‘iPhone SE 2’ also has to compete against the iPhone 11 as the cheapest model of the current generation, as well as the iPhone XS and XR from last year, as well as a relatively mature iPhone market.
According to the note seen by AppleInsider, Kuo passed comment on some of the components expected to be used in the model. Kuo is expecting the use of a ten-layer Substrate-like PCB (SLP) for the motherboard, the same technology used by the iPhone 11’s version, albeit a cheaper version. It is believed the choice of motherboard will help some existing iPhone supply chain companies, including Pending Holdings, AT&S, and Xinxing, due to the use of SLP.
Earlier notes from Kuo suggested the iPhone SE sibling will cost $399 when it ships at the end of March, with mass production expected to start in January.
The model is predicted to include the same 4.7-inch display as the iPhone 8, as well as take some of its physical design, but combine it with the A13 processor used in the iPhone 11 series, along with 3 gigabytes of application RAM. The model is also thought to use an updated antenna design that uses Liquid Crystal Polymer, but the need to keep the price down also makes Kuo believe it will continue to use Touch ID and not Face ID.

Pokémon Sword And Shield Are Leaking Like A Sieve, Be Safe Out There
We’re just days away from the launch of Pokémon Sword and Shield on Nintendo Switch, and all sorts of leaks are appearing all over the internet. We’re talking starter evolutions, new Gigantamax forms, and pretty much the full Pokédex – if you want to know something, you can probably find it.
Innocently scrolling through your social media platform of choice can be a nightmare for those looking to avoid new content, so we’d recommend muting certain phrases if you’re particularly concerned. Facebook and Instagram are tricky, but Twitter allows you to essentially block any words of your choosing – such as ‘Sword and Shield’ or ‘Pokemon leaks’, for example.
