National Disability Employment Awareness Month: Empowering all people in the workplace

By Jenny Lay-Flurrie, Chief Accessibility Officer, Microsoft

Every day, we have an opportunity to stand up for each other and work together to empower people to achieve more. For many people, including the 1+ billion people in the world with disabilities, employment is critical to a productive and purposeful life.

Today is the start of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and this year’s theme, Empowering All, is near and dear to our mission. I’m reminded of the progress made since 1945 when Congress declared the origins of this movement. Today, there is a clear call to action to do so much more to change the unemployment rate for people with disabilities, which is nearly double that of those without disabilities. We have the responsibility to come together – across industries, sectors and geographies – to create inclusive workplaces for all. Technology has an important role in empowering people at work, home and play. Similarly, organizations have a responsibility to support employees in an inclusive environment.

NDEAM is an opportunity to motivate the community, but we need to make progress every day. Here are three ways that you (or your organization) can get involved.

Hire talent.

  • Building an inclusive workplace starts with culture. Every person has a role to play in embracing inclusion. There are so many tools available for you as well as tools available you can use to empower others in the organization.
  • Lean into the resources available. Inclusion in the workplace leads to innovation. Employers that are actively seeking out people with different viewpoints and backgrounds will have a greater opportunity to meet the needs of all their customers.
    • We have put all of our learning and the technologies that can be impactful into our Disability Inclusion Sways. Do read and share your experiences with others.
    • HR professionals and recruiters can benefit from sharing best practices and connecting with other employees and companies are finding great talent by adjusting their thinking on how they recruit and interview as shared recently on CBS Evening News.
    • Check out Disability:In and the Autism @ Work Employer Roundtable, as great resources for the business community to begin their journey towards disability inclusion.

Empower all employees in the workplace.

  • Creating Inclusion through conversation. We all have our preferred features and settings around the office that help us do our best work. From lighting and ergonomic keyboards, to accessible facilities and quiet work spaces. Everyone has preferences, including people with disabilities. We touched on a few of these in the Wired25 article, and encourage you to have conversations with existing and new employees to help managers and teams understand what employees need to be successful. Remember ~70% of disability is invisible.
  • Check out features built into Windows and Office. Did you know that there are now Color Blindness filters in Windows 10 Ease of Access Settings? We have been busy creating accessible features built-in to the core of Windows and Office 365, like Learning Tools, Dictate, Narrator, Translator, Color Blindness Filters, and more. Our goal is to make technology that works for each of us.
  • Send inclusive accessible content. Next email you send a mail, PowerPoint you create, or in fact any Office365 document you’re working on – remember to use accessibility checker to ensure that your content is inclusive. It’s easy to do, just click on Accessibility Checker right next to Spell Check.

Build innovative futures. Lean into the potential of AI.

  • With rapid advancements in technologies, like AI and machine learning, we are creating accessible technology that can enable all workers to be productive in the workplace. That’s why we announced the five year, $25M AI for Accessibility program in May this year.
  • We want to see more grant applications towards leveraging the power of AI to lower the unemployment rate for people with disabilities, that can impact modern life, and and the third challenge area: communication and connection. Please do check out the AI for Accessibility website and submit your grant application.

We are excited to talk more throughout the month of October about disability inclusion – starting with the first in a series of demos from our CEO, Satya Nadella and members of the disability community talking about accessibility features and products that empower people. On Wednesday, here in the Pacific Northwest, we will host the Microsoft DisAbility Employment Symposium on October 3, 2018 at the Microsoft Conference Center. The event will bring together Puget Sound employers and partners to discuss best practices for inclusive hiring. If you are in the area and interested in attending, learn more and register here.

Keep an eye out for more blogs, demos and news coming out this month as we celebrate NDEAM. It is only together that we can change the unemployment rate for people with disabilities.

New offerings combine mixed reality and Dynamics 365

Hey everyone!

I hope this note finds you well. For those who have been following and participating in our mixed reality journey, welcome to our new home in the Dynamics 365 blog! For those new to us, on behalf of everyone who works on mixed reality business applications at Microsoft it is our pleasure to meet you.

My name is Lorraine Bardeen, and I am the general manager of engineering for Mixed Reality Business Applications at Microsoft. I have the pleasure of working for James Phillips in the Business Applications Group and the privilege to lead a world-class team of engineers working to bring mixed reality to people and organizations across the globe.

I have been working on the mixed reality business for over six years and I still show up at work every day excited to work with customers, partners and developers to innovate and solve real problems using mixed reality. With mixed reality, we can understand data in context and simplify workflows to extend human ability. When this happens workers feel more effective, businesses see more progress and everyone has a chance to participate in the modern workplace.

Today marks an important day for all of us on the mixed reality business applications team. Today, we officially mark general availability of our first Dynamics 365 business applications: Dynamics 365 Remote Assist and Dynamics 365 Layout.

To celebrate this important milestone I wanted to write this post and share more about why mixed reality and Dynamics 365 have come together, what people can expect from these first mixed reality business applications, and how they are already being used and deployed.

Why mixed reality and Dynamics 365 have come together

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to speak to press and analysts in San Francisco about mixed reality business applications at Microsoft. As part of that moment in time, Alysa Taylor talked about our vision for business applications and I had the chance to talk specifically about mixed reality. In particular I talked about why mixed reality and Dynamics 365 have come together and I wanted to share some of that with you here as well.

With Dynamics 365, customers are reimagining their business processes by leveraging modern, unified, intelligent and adaptable solutions that bring together the vast amounts of data across their organization to empower their employees with new tools to help them feel more effective at work. Factory and field service worker. Patient and provider. Storefront and supply chain. No silos — just customers, products, employees and data more closely connected than ever before. Mixed reality represents a totally new part of this solution because of the capabilities it provides.

We recognize that these employees need information in context to apply their knowledge and craft. Not only on a 2-D screen — but information and data in context, at the right place, and at the right time, that they can use hands-free so employees can produce even greater impact for their organizations. We’ve focused on integrating these mixed reailty business applications with the common data service that underlies Dynamics 365 so that companies get the full value of high-value data connecting the full workflow.

Introducing the general availability of Dynamics 365 Remote Assist

With today’s release of Dynamics 365 Remote Assist we are taking an important step forward in helping address some of the current, unmet needs of Firstline Workers. Firstline Workers represent more than 2 billion people in roles that make them the first points of contact between a company and the world it serves, between a company and its products. They are often the first to engage, the first to represent a company’s brand, the first on the scene to address a problem.

With Dynamics 365 Remote Assist we can enable technicians and remote experts to solve problems in real time with heads-up, hands-free video calling, annotations, and file sharing. By identifying and addressing issues accurately we can also eliminate the need for costly travel expenses while improving operational efficiency.

Organizations will be able to communicate securely with industry-leading identity and security measures, including Azure Active Directory. In addition, they will be able to leverage work order data from Dynamics 365 Field Service on-site using the common data service.

For business decision-makers looking for new ways to empower their employees and create more collaborative ways of problem-solving, this is pretty exciting stuff! But enough talking about it — here is Microsoft Dynamics 365 Remote Assist in action.

Introducing the general availability of Dynamics 365 Layout

Lastly, with today’s release of Dynamics 365 Layout we are now providing our customers and partners with a way to visualize room layouts in real-world scale. The ability to walk through proposed layouts in physical space or virtual reality. Review and make changes with stakeholders in real time, saving time and money. Move, resize and rotate 3-D models to edit layouts on the spot.

Here is a peek at Dynamics 365 Layout in action.

Mixed reality business applications being deployed

About four months ago we released the public preview of our two mixed reality business applications. During that time, we had the chance to work with and learn from many great companies, and I wanted to take a moment to spotlight a couple of them here.

ZF Group

A great way to see Remote Assist and Layout in action is through the work of ZF Group, a German car-parts manufacturer headquartered in Friedrichshafen. An early partner on our journey, ZF Group has been working with us over the past few months to help ensure these apps, even in preview, are crafted with insights from those who will be using them daily to get their work done. In developing these apps with customers, we are not only looking to make great software — we’re looking to empower the Firstline Workers using the apps.

Learn more about how ZF Group uses Microsoft mixed reality tools.

Chevron

Chevron is already achieving real, measurable results with its global HoloLens deployment. Previously it was required to fly in an inspector from Houston to a facility in Singapore once a month to inspect equipment. Now it has in-time inspection using Dynamics 365 Remote Assist and can identify issues or provide approvals immediately. In addition, remote collaboration and assistance have helped the company operate more safely in a better work environment, serving as a connection point between firstline workers and remote experts, as well as cutting down on travel and eliminating risks associated with employee travel.

Learn how Chevron is deploying Microsoft Dynamics 365 Remote Assist and Microsoft HoloLens.

This is just the beginning! We will have a lot more to share in the months ahead, and I am looking forward to sharing more then.

As always, I’m available on Twitter (@lorrainebardeen) and eager to hear about what you’re doing with mixed reality.

‘Digital Peace Now’ campaign launches this weekend

This Saturday, 60,000-plus people will be converging on New York’s Central Park for the seventh Global Citizen Festival, a marquee gathering for worldwide changemaking and social good.

Microsoft will be there, on stage, as a partner to Global Citizen. We’re excited to announce that this year’s festival is going to be the launchpad for Digital Peace Now, a campaign to encourage world leaders to achieve digital peace.

The world’s digital citizens, and the digital world in which we all participate, have to be protected.  You can help by joining the Digital Peace Now movement.

This is the time, this is the moment, when we must take action to protect the digital world where we live, work and learn. Last year, close to a billion people were victims of a cyberattack or digital crime. But if you haven’t fallen victim to a digital attack yet, you probably know a victim. New research, being announced today, shows people like you are concerned and want to take action.

We know that nation-states are behind the worst digital attacks against both innocent people and the infrastructure that underpins societies – energy, transportation, health care, food and water. A peaceful digital global society is something truly worth fighting to achieve. Not least because virtually every digital attack ripples beyond its intended target and harms the lives of innocent citizens.

For example, the 2017 “WannaCry” attack – a true wake-up call – tore through cyberspace, hijacking more than 300,000 computers across 150 countries, including computers used by families, hospitals, governments and businesses. WannaCry was followed closely by “NotPetya,” an attack estimated to have caused $10 billion in damage ranging far beyond the initial targets in Ukraine.

WannaCry and NotPetya were our wake-up moments; they raised an alarm: if we don’t act now, global cyberattacks will continue to inflict grave economic harm and risk human lives and well-being.

At Microsoft, we are fighting to prevent digital attacks. We are not alone; others in industry and government have joined us in this fight. Now we need to amplify the voice of the people who cherish all that the digital world has given us – the digital citizens – all of you – who can make a difference by acting now to tell those in power that we want and demand digital peace.

So, we invite you to join the Global Citizen webcast this Saturday for the annual Global Citizen Festival.

Digital Peace Now is going to be all about people – people banding together in one collective voice to tell their world leaders that the internet must be a peaceful, shared community. Not a battlefield.

Also on Saturday, we’ll be launching the Digital Peace Now Petition and urging everyone – including anybody reading this – to head to digitalpeacenow.org and sign the petition:

We, as Digital Citizens, will not stand by silently as governments weaponize our shared online community — endangering individuals, organizations, and entire countries. In our digital world we create, connect, express ourselves and improve our lives and the lives of others.  Our online community must not be a battlefield. We demand Digital Peace.

Together, we will use our voices and our votes to defend the global digital society on which we depend. Our world leaders must act now to protect us.

There is no peace without Digital Peace.

The effort to achieve Digital Peace cannot be done by any company acting alone. We’re proud to launch this initiative with the founding members of the Digital Peace Campaign Advisory Board – ICT4Peace, Civicus and Observer Research Foundation. Achieving digital peace also must involve a coalition of governments, nonprofits, industry leaders, civil-society entities and global organizations. But most importantly, we need people like you to stand against those that endanger digital peace.

We all are digital citizens. We demand digital peace. Join us.

Bringing the power of Windows 10 to the Robot Operating System

Industrial robot
People have always been fascinated by robots.  Today advanced robots are complementing our lives, both at work and at home. Warehouse robots have enabled next-day deliveries to online shoppers, and many pet owners rely on robotic vacuums to keep their floors clean. Industries seeing benefits from robots are as diverse as manufacturing, transportation, healthcare and real estate. As robots have advanced, so have the development tools. We see robotics with artificial intelligence as universally accessible technology to augment human abilities.

Microsoft is at ROSCon 2018 in Madrid, Spain and we are excited to announce an experimental release of Robot Operating System [ROS1] for Windows. ROS is a set of libraries and tools that help you build complex robots, used in many cutting-edge robotic projects around the world.  This development will bring the manageability and security of Windows 10 IoT Enterprise to the innovative ROS ecosystem.

Windows has been a trusted partner of robotic and industrial systems for decades.  With ROS for Windows, developers will be able to use the familiar Visual Studio toolset along with rich AI and cloud features. We’re looking forward to bringing the intelligent edge to robotics by bringing advanced features like hardware-accelerated Windows Machine Learning, computer vision, Azure Cognitive Services, Azure IoT cloud services, and other Microsoft technologies to home, education, commercial, and industrial robots.

Manufacturers want to make robots more aware of their surroundings, easier to program and safer to be around. Governments, manufacturers, and academics around the world are investing in the next generation of manufacturing, sometimes referred to as “Industry 4.0”.  Microsoft is working with Open Robotics and the ROS Industrial Consortium to bring the Robot Operating System to Windows. Microsoft has joined the ROS Industrial Consortium whose mission is to extend the advanced capabilities of ROS to manufacturing and improve the productivity and return on investment of industrial robots.

At ROSCon 2018 in Madrid, Spain, Microsoft is demonstrating a ROBOTIS Turtlebot 3 robot, running the ROS release known as Melodic Morenia, that recognizes and steers toward the person closest to the robot.  The robot runs Windows 10 IoT Enterprise on an Intel Coffee Lake NUC using a new ROS node that leverages hardware-accelerated Windows Machine Learning.

Microsoft is also showcasing a ROS simulation environment running in Azure.  It demonstrates a swarm of robots running in a virtual world connected to an orchestration system and controlled via Azure IoT Hub.

Microsoft will host the Windows builds for ROS1 and shortly ROS2, as well as provide documentation, development and deployment solutions for Windows.  To get started using ROS for Windows and ROS with Azure, please visit the Getting Started guide at http://aka.ms/ros.

Microsoft launches Military Spouse Technology Academy

Spouses of active military service members face unique challenges. Frequent moves often pull them away from existing support networks, forcing families to build new relationships every few years. Relocations also require a constant job search while simultaneously finding new schools and childcare. This can be especially difficult when new assignments send families to areas with poor employment opportunities and when deployments necessitate extended periods of separation from loved ones. As a result, spouses face a 16 percent unemployment rate, which was four times the national rate for adults over 20 in the year 2017.

Today, Microsoft Military Affairs is expanding its commitment to this community with the launch of a new pilot program uniquely designed to train military spouses with necessary skills for long-lasting and meaningful technology careers that are both high-paying and portable.

Providing programs and support tailored to military spouses is a critical component of giving back to our broader military community. Through the Military Spouse Technology Academy (MSTA) pilot program, Microsoft seeks to deepen its commitment to military spouses by working with nonprofits and business leaders to not only help this community build the skills necessary to succeed in the technology sector, but also to enable military spouses to continue their career progression in the face of frequent moves. The program was specifically constructed to take these needs into account, offering an avenue to skilled jobs that can often be performed remotely.

“The success of Microsoft Software & Systems Academy is evidence that our programs for the military community work,” said U.S. Marine Corps Major General (Ret.) Chris Cortez, vice president of Microsoft Military Affairs. “Now we’re eager to apply what we’ve learned to a new, groundbreaking program called Military Spouse Technology Academy. This pilot program is one of a kind and furthers our commitment to service members and their families.”

MSTA cohort
Nineteen military spouses will participate  in the MSTA pilot program.

MSTA will provide soft-skills training, technology training and mentorship. The 22-week classroom-based program will empower spouses to seek careers in Server and Cloud Administration, working jointly with USO’s Pathfinder program, which supports military members and spouses during their transition with services, opportunities and resources.

Nineteen military spouses will participate in the pilot, which will take place Sept. 26 to Feb. 28 at a USO classroom space just outside Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Lakewood, Washington. The schedule is optimized for spouses, who often are primary caregivers to their children. The USO will provide wrap-around assistance, helping cohort members complete MSTA and seek purposeful employment.

MSTA enjoys broad support across Washington state at the highest levels. “It’s incredibly important that we help promote opportunities for the families and spouses of the men and women who serve in our military. I am proud that Washington has the first statewide effort to establish a military spouse employment empowerment zone. We have great partnerships in place with installations from all branches of military service and commitments from a wide range of employers who are ready to leverage the workforce talents of this important community,” Gov. Jay Inslee said. “I am pleased that Microsoft is expanding their commitment to families of service members and look forward to future efforts to support our nation’s military spouses.”

Gina Kirby, an MSTA mentor and principal specialist for Azure sales at Microsoft, is a military spouse. “I am proud to see Microsoft commit time, resources and energy to a key participant in our military community: spouses,” she said. “The sacrifices of a military spouse are unique and challenging. I have seen firsthand the abilities these individuals have, the obstacles they overcome and the impact they have on the group at large.”

MSTA participant
MSTA is designed to address the unique career challenges military spouses face.

Today, Microsoft Military Affairs will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch of the MSTA pilot program. J.D. Crouch II, CEO and president of the USO; Senator Steve Hobbs, 44th District; Joint Base Lewis-McChord Commander Sergeant Major Kenny Clayborn; and Elizabeth O’Brien, senior director, Military Spouse Program, Hiring Our Heroes will also be present to support and celebrate this achievement.

“Military spouses are extremely strong, resilient and innovative — and the value and benefits to building up this community are tremendous,” said USO Vice President of Programs Jeremy Albritton. “When we support our military spouses, we also strengthen our service members and military families. The USO is thrilled that companies like Microsoft are making a dedicated effort to help educate and empower military spouses, particularly within the field of technology.”

MSTA reflects the success of Microsoft Software & Systems Academy (MSSA), which launched in 2013 to provide veterans and transitioning service members with critical technology skills for the digital economy. Since its inception, Microsoft has seen a retention rate of over 90 percent of MSSA graduates after the second year and beyond — compared with most transitioning military members and veterans who stay in their first job less than two years. In March 2018, Microsoft completed Phase One of its 2015 stated goal to open 14 MSSA locations coast-to-coast with the capacity to graduate 1,000 students yearly.

Microsoft is proud of this groundbreaking new pilot program as part of its journey to continue learning how best to serve military spouses. It’s a small part of the company’s broader commitment to members of the armed forces through MSSA, YouthSpark and more.

Volkswagen and Microsoft partner to give drivers a connected, seamless ride

As Volkswagen began planning for its push into electric cars and autonomous technology, the company faced a major challenge — how to build a connected car that enabled drivers to seamlessly access digital services on the go.

A driver might, for example, be listening to music at home and want to continue listening as she gets in her car, then need to jump on a conference call, then check her online calendar. Accessing those services on the road can be problematic, since applications from third-party providers typically don’t talk to each other in a seamless way.

The issue is one automotive companies worldwide are grappling with as they seek to create connected, customized driving experiences that move across customers’ daily lives. To address that challenge and gain the knowledge to build its own mobility services, Volkswagen turned to Microsoft. The two companies are partnering to develop the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud, a dedicated global cloud platform that will provide digital mobility services across the automaker’s portfolio.

“I think this is an industry benchmark in terms of joining forces and putting the best of each company at the table and building the business together,” says Heiko Huettel, head of connected car for the Volkswagen Group.

As Volkswagen aims to transform its company to a digital services-driven business, the Volkswagen Automotive cloud will be built from the ground up on top of Microsoft’s Azure cloud and IoT Edge platform as its technology foundation. To start, the cloud will leverage Microsoft cloud services including Azure IoT, PowerBI and Skype to help create in-car consumer experiences, telematics and productivity solutions. By building its own dedicated automotive cloud, Volkswagen will be able to leverage consistent mobility services across its entire portfolio of brands.

Volkswagen will establish a new legal entity located in North America close to Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, to build its new automotive cloud. To help bolster those efforts, Microsoft will provide hands-on support, including initial engineering consulting resources. The new entity will be governed by an executive council with business and technical leaders from both companies.

The initiative comes at a pivotal time for Volkswagen, one of the world’s largest automakers. Software and associated services will be key to differentiating automakers going forward, Huettel says.

“Simply building great cars will not be enough, and that’s why the Volkswagen Group — and especially its core brand of Volkswagen passenger cars — is investing heavily in electric and autonomous technology,” he says. “But even more, Volkswagen is also speeding up the development of its ecosystem with its own software know-how and the strength of external partners. We envision the automobile evolving into a central hub in the Internet of Things, enabling customers to take their world into their vehicles.”

A graphic illustrating the connected components of the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud

The Volkswagen Automotive Cloud will be integral to those efforts, and Microsoft will play a key role in helping the company transform to a software and service-driven model. The new entity will have work streams focused exclusively on the company’s culture and transformation to the new model, in addition to the technical work streams, and Huettel says Volkswagen is eager to learn how Microsoft has evolved under CEO Satya Nadella.

Huettel noticed that change during a visit to Microsoft three years ago, while working for another automaker. During a meeting on campus, Huettel read the announcements on the company’s digital display boards about employee training sessions and other events, and was struck by the open atmosphere he observed.

“This was not the Microsoft I’d seen a few years earlier,” he says. “That’s when my thinking changed about what transformation really means and how transformation in such a big company can really happen. My whole world, my little black and white picture, broke down and I saw that if such a large company like Microsoft could change, why can’t the automotive industry change? Why can’t we embrace what I’m seeing there?”

As Volkswagen moved toward its goal of creating a digital platform to integrate connected cars, cloud and services, Huettel says, it recognized a need to be more agile and establish a single digital platform. The company has revamped its digital strategy in recent months, integrating some operations and acquiring several software companies. But to become a customer-centric company with an ecosystem that connects its vehicles, Volkswagen decided to partner with Microsoft.

“We came to the conclusion that we needed to change in a revolutionary way,” Huettel says. “We want to leverage what we can from Microsoft’s culture and Microsoft’s technology. We want to be the Microsoft of the automotive industry, in terms of being seen as the company that made a digital transformation and is really perceived as one of the digital players in the market.”

Dee Templeton, Microsoft’s product lead on the partnership, said the company will work hand-in-hand with Volkswagen on that transformation. Given the Volkswagen Group’s 12 brands — Volkswagen itself being the largest — and 640,000 employees worldwide, it will be a complex endeavor.

“We’re going share our own learnings from the transformation under Satya,” Templeton says. “We want to help Volkswagen meet its bold ambitions for its future, and what we can offer is pretty unique in terms of showing them how Microsoft transformed its own culture and how we have embraced transformation holistically. It’s not just about software. Leveraging our expertise and our decades-old heritage in developing software from the bottom up is another reason partnering with Microsoft was so important to them.

“This will be a deep and multifaceted partnership that involves developing software that leverages the best the cloud can offer and most importantly, one that fosters a ‘one team’ culture to make it a reality.”

The new entity, Templeton says, will help Volkswagen evolve into a software-driven company that can connect directly with customers and offer services in multiple ways, from pushing software updates directly out to vehicles to allowing drivers to purchase services from their cars or through mobile apps.

“That would have been extremely hard or impossible to do if cars were not connected,” she says. “Those types of things would not have been possible in the past.”

To Huettel, the initiative encompasses more than the cloud.

“I like to call it an integrative ecosystem,” he says. “Our approach is to be where you are, while you are driving, traveling, being transported. That is where we want to head, and that is what we want to build jointly with Microsoft.”

Microsoft’s intelligent mobile phone keyboard SwiftKey translates as you text

YouTube Video

Microsoft Translator, a technology that uses artificial intelligence to provide translations for more than 60 languages, has been integrated with SwiftKey for Android, an intelligent keyboard for mobile devices, Microsoft announced on Thursday.

“We wanted to make it really easy for users to be able to translate as they type and to be able to translate incoming messages,” said Colleen Hall, a senior product manager for SwiftKey in London. Microsoft acquired SwiftKey in 2016.

The real-time translation feature is especially handy in the context of messaging with family, friends and colleagues who speak different languages, she noted. Once users tap the Microsoft Translator icon on the SwiftKey keyboard, the app translates as they type and translates incoming messages that users copy.

“They do not have to leave the keyboard in order to do the translations,” Hall explained.

The app also remembers users’ preferences, eliminating the need to scroll through the full list of the more than 60 available languages to select which languages to translate to and from each time the feature is engaged.

The translation capability is available offline to SwiftKey users who have also downloaded the Microsoft Translator app, enabling translations of emails composed, for example, during an overseas flight on a business trip.

Microsoft Translator is a part of Azure Cognitive Services, a collection of AI algorithms. The translation feature is currently available for users of SwiftKey on Android devices, a user base that data indicates is global and highly multilingual, Microsoft said.

“We have always had a strong multilingual offering,” noted Hall, “and now we are bringing Translator to that as well.”

Sea of Thieves ‘Forsaken Shores’ free update now available

At gamescom 2018, we gave a first glimpse at Forsaken Shores, our latest free content update coming to Sea of Thieves. As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver new Sea of Thieves content throughout the year and beyond, Forsaken Shores offers our biggest update yet at no charge for those who own the game or access it through Xbox Game Pass. There has never been a better time to set sail and adventure with other pirates in the Sea of Thieves community.

Today, Forsaken Shores invites players to venture into a new volcanic region called The Devil’s Roar. This perilous and challenging area of the Sea of Thieves will have players encountering volcano eruptions raining down hot rocks and flowing lava, terrifying earthquakes, unpredictable geysers that can fling players into the air and dangerous super-heated water around islands.

Also new to Forsaken Shores is the Row Boat, which will be key to assisting the navigation of this dangerous new region, but also enriching all journeys across every area of the world. Players can also take on new Devil’s Roar Voyages, with increased challenge that allows players to reap greater rewards.

This permanent new content will be introduced into Sea of Thieves with a time-limited campaign, running for four weeks from today, September 27, where players will be able to discover exactly what happened to the first crew that managed to make their way to The Devil’s Roar. As part of the campaign, players can also find new quests with the Merchant Alliance, taking on Cargo Runs across the world, keeping their cargo safe and delivering it in pristine condition for the highest rewards. Cargo Runs will arrive in week three of the campaign and remain a permanent fixture of the Merchant Alliance moving forward.

This Forsaken Shores campaign and content update will be available free and without charge to all Sea of Thieves players who have bought the game across the Xbox One family of devices or on Windows 10 PC, or who have access to it as part of Xbox Game Pass. Simply download and install the latest Sea of Thieves update to get access. And don’t worry, if you’re unable to take part in the time-limited campaign, all the features introduced with this campaign will remain in the Sea of Thieves world for everyone to see and experience.

In celebration of the launch of Forsaken Shores, the Xbox team asked Matt Berry to deliver our most epic update yet. Matt eschewed the traditional tropes of a pirate performance and instead, bellowed out each point out in his unique fashion. The second the first syllable was uttered on set there were smiles all round, so we hope you have as much fun watching the above video as we had making it.

We are also proud to announce that Sea of Thieves will officially support Traditional Chinese as an official language option starting on November 8. We believe that by enabling the game in more languages, more players will be able to enjoy Sea of Thieves the way they are most comfortable, so they can fully immerse themselves in their very own pirate adventure.

Thank you to the entire Sea of Thieves community for your patience in waiting for Forsaken Shores.
