Samsung is ready to lead the mobile gaming market

“When we launched the S23… our main focus was camera and performance. Today, we just want to focus on performance.” This is one of the first things Won-Joon Choi would say to me. Sounds like Samsung wants to remind mobile game fans of something.

I’m sat inside the Hotel Porta Fira Barcelona drinking water out of a wine glass and waiting to interview Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President, Head of Mobile R&D at Samsung. I just got off a flight and definitely look scruffier than I should. But then again, I’m not here to talk business, I’m here to talk gaming, so it’s fine right?

Outside is the Fira Grand Via exhibition centre, right next to a massive roundabout with a cube of billboards in the middle of it. All four are advertising the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, one side showing off a racing game and Samsung’s AirPods competitor, the other the sleek back of the two new phones. It’s cold but sunny, and I’m sweating a little bit.

About 138 hours later I’d be walking through Barcelona at night, and look up to see another Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, this time on the Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia. I posted a photo of it on Instagram and dubbed it the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia. I was making a joke.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - the Barcelona Cathedral at night, a large old building, with building work near its spire covered by a Samsung advert.

All this is to say, MWC 2023 was loud with Samsung. While Oppo may have turned up the volume in terms of London Underground advertising, Samsung is making a different sort of statement. “Biggest mobile trade show? We own it” – that sorta thing.

I go up some stairs that I was earlier refused passage by a security guard, assumedly because of my sweaty and scruffy demeanour. I go into a lift to the 24th floor. I ask how many floors there are. There are 24.

I walk into the meeting room – La Mordella. There are five people inside. One is Won-Joon Choi. Another is some sort of PR assistant, who would later whisper some stuff in his ear after I ask a question. Another is an interpreter – Won-Joon speaks excellent English, though some answers were in Korean. Another is working the slides on the projector. The final person doesn’t look up from the laptop they’re typing on.

So, uhh, what was I here to do again? Oh, yeah, ask some questions. You see, Samsung wants to remind everyone that it makes phones with a lot of power packed inside. It wants to court the game-likers. So, it’s invited the number one mobile gaming site in the world to have a chat about it.

The new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a special Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 inside. Instead of its main Kryo CPU core running at 3.2 GHz, as it does in the standard chip, it runs at 3.36 GHz. Plus, the Adreno GPU clocks in at 719 MHz instead of 680 MHz. Qualcomm and Samsung even say it can do ray tracing…

This special partnership between the two is notable. Won-Joon used to work at Qualcomm. Now, over at Samsung, the company can say it has the fastest chip in an Android phone. It even beats the iPhone 14 Pro on some benchmarks. Did Won-Joon just call his buddies back at Qualcomm and ask for some extra special sauce? Well, no.

“We work with all of the major chipset partners from the ground up. So, that was the case for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as well. We’ve been involved from the very beginning of the planning, letting them know about our requirements for the performance as well as architecture,” Won-Joon says. Not exactly a thrilling tale, so I dig a little.

Would Samsung take chipset production in-house like Apple? Apple silicon’s success across its different devices has become especially apparent in recent years. Then again, the chip in the Galaxy S23 Ultra does compete with Apple’s most recent top-end mobile chip, the A16 Bionic.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - the man himself stood arms-crossed in a tie-less suit and glasses in front of a wall of folding mobile phones.

Short answer: no. “Of course, these major chipset companies have their strengths,” Won-Joon (above) says, “so we will continue to strengthen our collaboration with these partners. And then, on one hand, there are solutions that can be differentiated for Galaxy, so we will develop those internally and add them on through our collaboration.”

So, this is where Samsung is at when it comes to powering its mobiles. Qualcomm is giving the company what it needs in a clearly fruitful partnership. And it has created a chip that can do ray-tracing, a feature Apple had to scrap on its most recent pro phone at the last minute after discovering key mistakes and being “too ambitious with adding new features” (a mistake “unprecedented in the group’s history”, all according to The Information).

So, is the ray-tracing claim just a good headline to have, after Apple failed to push through its next-generation pro silicon? Or is it a reality we can expect to see? Luckily, both Samsung and Qualcomm are pretty reasonable about the realities of ray tracing on mobile.

“We’re not quoting any types of numbers. But I think some of it’s about working with the game developers to understand, like, typically, not every scene has ray tracing, right? So what are those scenes that we really want to optimise that are truly going to be impactful to the user?” Mike Roberts, VP, Head of Global Product, Partner, and Technology Marketing at Qualcomm – crikey, what a mouthful – said in a roundtable I attended a few days after meeting Won-Joon.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - a green Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra next to pleasant geometric shapes in similar tones.

“Hardware-based ray tracing has been something we’ve been chasing for many, many years, in fact, that is here today, that’s going to continue to improve,” he said. “When you think of consoles, you know… of what Xbox and PlayStation and Nintendo are doing in their next-generation consoles, I think there isn’t going to be this huge gap between them.”

This lofty aim is admirable, sure. But the reality is, just because hardware-based ray tracing is theoretically possible, doesn’t mean us lay folk get to use it. In fact, as far as I can tell, there’s not a single game that uses it that’s currently fully released. I do like Samsung’s ambition combined with realism, however, and a clear understanding that it’s the developers who need to implement it, after all.

“We’ve been working with chipset partners for many years to look at and provide this ray-tracing feature in-device,” Won-Joon told me. “As a result, we were able to introduce the chipset capable of hardware-accelerated ray tracing in our current generation of S23.

“It’s not just the hardware capability that we require, we need the game developers to develop games where they use ray tracing. In this respect, we don’t plan to sit idle and just look at the situation passively. We want to be actively involved and that is why we already began cooperation with a couple of game developers.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - a pink Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra next to pleasant geometric shapes in similar tones.

“We are providing them with optimization assistance in developing their games. So once this work is matured we’ll be able to actually see the games with ray tracing on the market.” Okay, so those partners, who are they? Is it a secret? Yep, not allowed to know. Sure we’ll find out soon enough.

Anyway, hardware this hardware that, we get it. This new chip is fast. But the main focus of the short presentation I received beforehand was “performance”, and performance comes from both hardware and software. And Samsung is also very keen to talk about the latter.

The company developed an adaptive AI algorithm to bring efficiency gains depending on what game you’re playing. I’m not very clever, so I couldn’t begin to fully understand how it all works, but I am intrigued if there could be a case where it doesn’t work correctly. Could a game trip up the algorithm?

“The adaptive algorithm didn’t happen overnight.” Glad we cleared that up. “It’s the result of our longtime development and collaboration… of course, you cannot say that it’s always 100% optimised… there could be some specific titles with software bugs or glitches.” Of course, if this does occur, Samsung says it will resolve the issue.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - a black Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra next to pleasant geometric shapes in similar tones.

While this certainly isn’t the first time Samsung has focused on gaming performance, it feels like a concerted effort is going on to let people know that these lovely, shiny phones with big, excellent cameras can also pack a gaming punch. I’m not expecting the S24 to have RGB and a Doritos partnership, but how does Samsung plan to keep pushing the phone to please this market?

“As an engineer, there is always something I wish I could have incorporated in the development and thinking about my past history of launching many different products, I can say this confidently, I can say that S23 is very close to what we were looking for and what we were hoping for when we started planning. But, of course, it can never be 100% perfect.”

So, cards close the chest again. When I press further, Won-Joon says that Samsung listens to consumers and what they want. All I’d say is don’t expect passthrough charging or some other game-focused feature. These are still all-rounders, still flagships at the end of the day.

This flagship’s stats kind of makes Samsung the de facto leader against Apple, with the company pulling ahead of its primary Android competitors thanks to this Qualcomm partnership. While talking about other Android phones is nice and all, we all know that Samsung makes good phones (just google “best Android phone 2023”). So, Apple has to be the focus of comparison.

Samsung Won-Joon Choi interview - a green Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra next to pleasant geometric shapes in similar tones.

And, with Apple dominating Gen Z, according to a new report from the Financial Times – 34 per cent of all iPhone owners in the US are Gen Z, but only 10 per cent of Samsung users – how does the company plan to compete? I’m Gen Z. I recorded this interview on an iPhone. Is Samsung worried about convincing the younger generation?

Well, that’s hard to say. “It is the philosophy of Galaxy to cover the needs and wants of all age groups, not just Gen Z, and all of their needs and all of their values,” Won-Joon says. “Just like any other age group, we are always listening to the feedback of Gen Z so that we can deliver the values and the needs that they have so that they can love us even more.” So, Samsung wants to cater to everybody. How does that saying go again? Jack of all trades…?

Well, maybe that’s a bit mean. The Samsung S23 Ultra is a master at most of what it does. But it’s so hard to get under the surface here, no tactics or ideas for the future of Galaxy, just a reminder that the new thing the company made sure is powerful. Even if games leveraging that power are few and far between, at least you know the power is in there. Hidden away. Ready for the big day.

Genshin Impact Traveler dendro, geo, anemo, and electro builds

Genshin Impact’s Traveler is the general name given to the twin you choose – who otherwise canonically go as Aether and Lumine. Traveler can switch between anemo, geo, electro, and dendro elements by resonating with Statues of The Seven around the world map. In this Genshin Traveler guide we go over all of their skills, the best artifacts and weapons for each element, and more.

For help with other characters, take a look at our Genshin Impact Yanfei and Genshin Impact Yoimiya guides. If you want to wish for some brand new characters on the Genshin Impact next banner but are low on primogems, head over to our Genshin Impact codes list to line your wallets with some extra in-game currency.

Genshin Impact Traveler

Genshin Impact Traveler: Aether, Lumine, and Paimon hanging Xiao lanterns together.

What’s the best Genshin Impact Traveler build?

With any elemental alignment, the Traveler always seems to excel the most in sub-dps support roles. They work as a great battery for their main element, especially in geo and dendro modes, and generally have kits geared towards elemental application and crowd control. In most situations, they’re out-done by other characters who wield the same element, but they’re a great staple and easy to ascend due to materials being given to you or purchasable from each region’s gift shop.

What are the best Genshin Traveler weapons?

The Skyward Blade is the best weapon for anemo, electro, and geo Traveler. You can also use Festering Desire as a replacement weapon.

For dendro traveler, Freedom-Sworn or Sacrificial Sword are your best options.

Weapon Effect
Skyward Blade Critical hit rate is increased by 4%. Traveler gains Skypiercing Might when an elemental burst is used. This increases movement and attack speed by 10% and boosts the damage of normal and charged attacks by 20% for 12 seconds
Festering Desire Elemental skill damage is increased by 16% and elemental skill critical hit rate by 6%
Freedom-Sworn Increases damage by 10%. When you trigger elemental reactions, you gain a Sigil of Rebellion. This effect can be triggered once every 0.5s, even if said character is not on the field. When you possess two Sigils of Rebellion, both are consumed and all nearby party members obtain Millennial Movement: Song of Resistance for 12 seconds. Millennial Movement: Song of Resistance increases normal, charged, and plunging attack damage by 16%, and increases attack by 20%. Once this effect is triggered, you can’t gain more Sigils of Rebellion for 20 seconds. Buffs of the same type don’t stack.
Sacrificial Sword After damaging an opponent with an elemental skill, the skill has a 40% chance to end its own cooldown. Can only occur once every 30 seconds.

Genshin Impact Traveler: Aether and Paimon looking wide eyed at something in the sky while Aether holds a sparkler.

What are the best Genshin Traveler artifacts?

We recommend using a full set of Viridescent Venerer items for the anemo Traveler and a full set of Noblesse Oblige for the geo Traveler. However, Noblesse Oblige is also a good second choice for an anemo build.

For electro Traveler, you should use Noblesse Oblige or Emblem of Severed Fate. The best pick for dendro Traveler is Deepwood Memories, unless you have another dendro wielder on the team equipped with this set, in which case you should give Traveler Gilded Dreams.

Artifact set Effect
Viridescent Venerer Two equipped: 15% anemo damage bonus
Four equipped: Swirl damage is increased by 60%. Your opponent’s elemental resistance to the element infused in the swirl is decreased by 40% for ten seconds

within eight seconds of triggering an elemental reaction, the character equipping this obtains buffs based on the elemental type of the other party members. Attack is increased by 14% for each member whose elemental type is the same as the equipping character, and elemental mastery is increased by 50 for every member with a different elemental type. Each of the buffs count up to three characters. This effect can be triggered once every eight seconds, even when not on the field

The most addictive games on mobile 2023

Let’s face it, there are more addictive games to play on mobile than there are on any other gaming platform. Whether you’re riding on the bus or even sitting on the toilet at work, it’s easy to just grab your phone, start one of them up, and enjoy the dopamine rush that follows. As we all know, the most addictive games tend to be free-to-play as well. After all, that’s how they make their money – if they weren’t addictive, nobody would ever be tempted to pay to climb over those paywalls.

On the flip side of that though, managing to get ahead in a free-to-play game without spending a penny can feel extremely satisfying. So let’s take a look at our top picks for the most addictive games on mobile. If you want more recommendations, we’ve got lists of the best word games, farm games, strategy games, and more for you to peruse.

The most addictive games on mobile are:

Raid: Shadow Legends

This is one you’ve probably heard of before – Raid: Shadow Legends is probably one of the first games that many gamers think of when they heard the words “free to play” and part of the reason for this is that it provides an experience which can be genuinely fun, but is also highly addictive.

For those who don’t know, the general premise behind it is that you put together a team of champions so that you can make your way through dungeons that are made up of turn-based RPG battles. It’s one of those games where you mostly just sit back and let the game take its course, but watching your team level up through the grinding, making your way through the dungeons, and unlocking more and more powerful champions can be wonderfully moreish.

Play Raid: Shadow Legends for free.

Mech Arena

Looking for an online shooter to get hooked on? Look no further than Mech Arena. As you have probably guessed, this is a game that puts you in control of a mech suit, and then you battle it out against others in mech suits in a number of different arenas. It feels and looks very similar to Overwatch, so it’s likely that that was an influence on the developers.

While, yes, it sounds very simple on paper, there’s actually a lot more to it than you may think. There are so many different mechs to unlock, and all of them have a number of customisation options, and even different pilots who bring unique bonuses. The more you play, the more you unlock, and eventually you’ll get to the point where you’ve honed your mech to play in exactly the way that you wanted it to.

Mafia City

Mafia City is a game that many people will have already heard of. It sees you taking on the role of a mafia boss, which means that you get to build constructs throughout the city, while also sending out bikers, and other loyal gang members to go out and defend your territories from enemies.

It’s a nice mixture of crime and strategy, which is a wonderfully unique mixture. If you enjoy games with a social aspect, you’ll be pleased to hear that you have opportunities, not only to come up against other players, but also to work cooperatively with them. If you and a group of friends all started playing at once, it could be a good opportunity for you to each help one another to make your way in the crime world.

Epic Seven

If you love the anime aesthetic, then this is a game you’re gonna want to try out. Describing itself as “The Playable Animation” the developers intended players to genuinely feel like they were part of an unfolding anime storyline in this free-to-play game.

This is one of those gacha games where there’s an enormous selection of characters to unlock who all have their own distinct personalities, and then you take them through turn-based RPG battles to grind and progress the story. It’s a formula that several other games use, but one that can certainly become quite addictive. Since every player will progress with a slightly different selection of characters, everyone’s playthrough will feel unique.

Forge of Empires

At the start of Forge of Empires, you create the most basic of settlements all the way back in the Stone Age, and then you get to develop it throughout all of human history. As we’re sure you can imagine, it’s one heck of a journey.

Advancements in technology occur as you move forward through history, allowing you to build new types of buildings within your towns and cities. Following the course of real history is probably going to appeal to history buffs too – and it even reaches the modern day, before moving onward into the imagined era of future history. Most of all, Forge of Empires is remarkable in its scope.

Rise of Cultures

We’ve got another historic strategy game here. What makes Rise of Cultures unique, is that there’s a much more human-centric focus than you often see in this genre. While you’re still looking down on your civilisation from above, in Rise of Cultures, it’s important to make sure that your people are happy.

When you create your cities, you need to add buildings that will give the people cultural fulfilment. These need to be spread around too, so that they’re accessible to people working and living in all the different parts of your city. You also have to be conscious of their energy levels, because they’ll reach their limits if you over-work them. It gives a unique perspective on empire-building games.

Sonic Dash

If there’s any gaming franchise which is well-suited to the infinite runner genre, it’s Sonic Dash. You play as Sonic, or one of his many friends, as they make their way through endless courses, attacking or dodging enemies, avoiding bottomless pits and spikes, and even fighting bosses every now and then. It’s simple, but as you work to unlock all the characters, you’ll soon find yourself playing it every single day.

There are actually three versions of this game. The first, regular old Sonic Dash, is the original and features all the main Sonic cast (Knuckles, Shadow, Amy, Tails, Big, etc), with special events having made characters from Angry Birds, the Sonic movie, and the Sonic IDW comic available. A second one, Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, is based on the Sonic Boom sub-series, and the third, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, incorporates a large selection of Sonic characters and locations from different sources.

Magic: The Gathering Arena

Magic: The Gathering has cemented itself as one of the most popular trading car games of all time – and you know what? It works really well as a free-to-play mobile game as well. If you’ve ever wanted to give MTG a try, this would be a great place to start, because it provides tutorials which make it easy for you to get to grips with the intricacies of the game.

Then once you’re a pro, the multiverse of MTG is your oyster. You can play with other people online, you can play against CPU players for practice, and you can unlock booster packs so that you can build up your collection and create the ultimate deck. MTG is such a well-crafted game, and Magic: The Gathering Arena captures all of its charm.

Hero Wars

We’re sure you’ll have seen the trailers that show a hero in a precarious situation, with sliding doors blocking gold, monsters, lava, water, or whatever. The player then opens them in the wrong order and the hero dies, leaving you thinking “You fool! I could have done it properly” and then you download the game to prove it.

Except, when you download Hero Wars, you get a completely different game (though the puzzles do occasionally show up as bonus levels). Fortunately, the real game, which sees you assembling a team of heroes and then having them plough through countless foes in different levels, is still pretty fun. If you’re someone who’s prone to collecting things, Hero Wars is sure to prove a highly addictive experience. “Just five more minutes” you say again and again as you try and grind enough to win the next level, or get just one more hero.

Addictive games: Solitaire Grand Harvest. Image shows a Solitaire game in process.

Solitaire Grand Harvest

Solitaire is a game that people have been enjoying for hundreds of years and there are countless versions of this classic games on mobile devices. Solitaire Grand Harvest is definitely one of the best, because it combines this timeless format with another staple of the mobile gaming world: farming.

While card games might not seem to be an obvious pairing for farming, the two actually go together beautifully. By beating Solitaire puzzles, you’re given the opportunity to grow crops and expand your farm, giving you further motivation to keep going through the different challenges that game throws your way. The great feeling that comes after you’re able to clear off a number of cards in one chain will keep you coming back for more and more.

Addictive games: Dice Dreams. Image shows a happy peon in front of its kingdom, with the Dice Dreams logo below.

Dice Dreams

In Dice Dreams, you’re put in charge of a kingdom of cute peon creatures. Their home has been attacked and they need a strong leader like you to get things back on track. What sets this apart from other games is the fact that everything you do is decided by the outcome of a dice roll.

Of course, many mobile games depend on random numbers to make things happen, it’s just that Dice Dreams is a little more open about it. Sometimes a dice roll will get you money, which you can use to grow or expand your kingdom, and sometimes it gives you a chance to attack the kingdoms of your friends (and you can connect it to Facebook to easily find any real life friends who have the game). It’s a very basic concept for a game, but it’s very charming in its presentation, and something about it will keep you coming back again and again.

Addictive games - Daily Themed Crossword Puzzles. Image shows a crossword in progress.

Daily Themed Crossword Puzzles

Something for those with an appetite for more cerebral games. Daily Themed Crossword Puzzles is exactly what it says on the tin. Each and every day, you’ll be treated to a new crossword puzzles to complete. If you’re looking for something to do during your daily commute, this might just be it.

You can earn coins by watching adverts, and these coins can then be used to unlock new puzzles or even to buy clues if you’re stuck. While some may consider that cheating, it’s actually a pretty good way to stop things getting boring after you’ve spent ages trying to figure out a particularly cryptic clue. Before long, you’ll wonder how you ever did without your daily crossword puzzle.

Addictive games: Lords Mobile. Image shows a knight soring through the sky, with a rabble of armoured soldiers beneath him.

Lords Mobile

If you enjoy carefully putting together teams of units with different abilities in order to overcome different challenges, then Lords Mobile is a game to try. In it, you’ll go through RPG-style battles, where you send out a smaller group of heroes to do battle, grind, and unlock new heroes (somewhat reminiscent of Raid: Shadow Legends). On top of that, you’ll also engage in tower defence style battles, where you’ll have to assemble the best team to defend your base from an onslaught of foes, before then sending them out to destroy the enemy base.

Part of what makes the game so addictive is that it has so many heroes for you to unlock. These come in many shapes and sizes, from knights in shining armour, to goblins, and sages, and you’ll enjoy building up your retinue and making them all as powerful as possible so that you’ve got a crack squad ready and waiting to take on any challenge that you may encounter.

Addictive games: Smash Party. Image shows the player in combat against a group of comical criminals.

Smash Party

Fans of the best mobile shooters should get a lot out of Smash Party. In this isometric, arcade-style shooter, you play as law enforcement officers who are trying to restore order in a town that has been overrun by criminals (who dress up as clowns and pirates, and wear many other strange outfits too).

Each level is fairly small (usually just a little bigger than the size of your screen) and you control your character by sliding your finger around. When you leave them stationary, they’ll automatically fire at the enemies, so it’s up to you to dodge the bullets and find the safest spot. It’s a simple premise, then, aren’t all the most addictive games? As an extra cherry on the cake, you can also play with friends.

Addictive games - Sunrise Village. A screenshot shows a group of people toiling in the field,

Sunrise Village

Even though running and managing a farm in real life is extremely hard work, when you do it in a mobile game, it becomes a super relaxing experience. In Sunrise Village, you play as somebody who has just started up their own farm in the titular village, and it’s a classic example of the age-old farm game formula.

You gather crops and produce so that you can complete orders, then you use the money you accumulate to create new buildings around your farm, and over time your farm expands more and more, allowing you to complete larger orders. It’s a simple premise, but one that definitely becomes addictive – watching your farm grow is a very satisfying experience.

Addictive games - Elvenar. A screenshot shows an isometric view of a fantasy city.

Elvenar

Next up, we have a fantasy strategy game. In Elvenar, you decide whether you want to play as humans or elves, and then after that, it’s up to you to develop their civilisation. As your kingdom expands, you will inevitably come into contact with other empires with clashing interests – when this happens, the gameplay shifts and instead sees you leading strategic battles against your enemy.

It’s great because, on the one hand, it’s one of the best city-building games, but on the other, it gives you an immersive fantasy experience where you have to think strategically. There’s a lot of depth to it, and it’s very easy to lose yourself in it.

Addictive games - Puzzles and Survival, a screenshot shows a summary of the character Tomoyo, summarising her ATK, DEF, SPD, and DMG stats.

Puzzles & Survival

Have you ever wanted to merge the zombie survival and tile-matching genres? What would a game like that look like? Puzzles & Survival is what that would look like. You and a team of survivors head out into the ruins of a city, fighting against zombies as you do so, with matching tiles helping you to make successful attacks on them.

In all honesty, the game draws a lot from the 2012 classic, Puzzles & Dragons, so if you’ve ever played that game, you’ll know what to expect. However, if you prefer the zombie aesthetic over the anime fantasy one, and you want to revisit that winning formula with a new coat of paint, we definitely suggest you take Puzzles & Survival for a spin, as it’s well worth a go.

Addictive games: Magic Jigsaw Puzzles. Image shows a Lion King puzzle in progress.

Magic Jigsaw Puzzles

Jigsaw puzzles have been providing people with a satisfying pastime since as far back as the 18th century, and Magic Jigsaw Puzzles brings that classic formula into the modern era. In this free-to-play game, you’re treated to a new puzzle every single day, ranging from cute animals, to iconic landmarks, and even popular Disney, Marvel, and Nickelodeon characters.

It’s a game that’s as therapeutic as it is addictive, and it’s something that you’ll easily pour a lot of hours into. Unlike real puzzles, you don’t need to worry about losing pieces or finding the room to put it together. If you want to create a fun, personalised experience, you can even turn your own photos and artworks into puzzles too. It’s a simple game, but one with a very broad appeal.

Addictive games - Crossword Jam. A screenshot shows a mini crossword game in progress, with the player about to guess the word 'row'.

Crossword Jam

This is the second crossword game that we’ve included in this list, but it offers a very different experience to Daily Themed Crossword Puzzles. Not everybody has time to do a whole crossword puzzle, so Crossword Jam gives you bite-sized crosswords that you’ll be able to complete in just one or two minutes.

In this one, all of the words in a given puzzle will be made up of just three or four different letters. At the bottom of the screen, those letters will be visible in a little circle, then you just need to connect them in different ways to create the words the puzzle requires. Nicely, you still get rewarded for using those letters to make words that aren’t in the puzzle. If you’ve got a competitive flare, you might be interested in its leaderboards too.

Addictive games - June's Journey. A screenshot shows a stately home ready to be investigated.

June’s Journey

Do you enjoy a good Agatha Christie-style murder mystery? Give June’s Journey a go. In it, you play as June Parker, a woman who is investigating the murder of her sister and her brother-in-law. She needs to find certain items in order to get an idea of what happened, so you’re given various scenes where you have to look for certain items, with a timer in place to reward you for finding things quickly.

When you’re not searching for clues, you’re looking after June’s stately home, buying items and expansions to make it as nice as possible. It’s a multi-faceted experience and one which deserves a place in your mobile gaming library.

Addictive games - Wordle. A player has guessed the words "Banjo" and "Diddy" but neither word is correct.

Wordle

Chances are, you’ve already heard of Wordle, because this puzzle game has been taking the internet by storm. Earlier this year, if you logged on to Twitter, most of the tweets you’d see would be people sharing their Wordle results. It’s such a simple premise, but one which has a huge dedicated fanbase who are ready to complete the new puzzles each and every day. There have been countless games like Wordle released too, as other developers try and get in on this new type of game.

For those not in the know, in Wordle, each day you’re given six guesses to get a five-letter word. Each new guess should be a little easier because it tells you whenever you get a letter that’s in the actual word, and whether or not that letter is in the right place. Getting it right in just two or three guesses is very rewarding, so it’s no wonder that people love to boast about their results. (Although, please note, it can be a bit challenging for colourblind players.)

Addictive games - Mario Kart Tour. A screenshot shows Funky, Donkey, Diddy, and Dixie Kong racing in Rambi Riders in the Dino Dino Jungle track. Dixie is in the lead.

Mario Kart Tour

It still feels awesome that you can play Mario Kart on your mobile phone. Though the game is slightly different from its console counterparts (focusing on you getting points through combos, rather than simply winning the race), it remains a highly enjoyable and addictive game that should appeal to many gamers, regardless of how much experience they have with the Super Mario series.

Mario Kart Tour brings back tons of iconic race tracks from the series’ history, as well as introducing new ones based on real-life cities from around the world. Winning races gets you coins and rubies, and these rubies are used to unlock new characters and vehicles through a gacha mechanic. There’s a huge selection of characters to unlock, including lots of alternative costumes. It even has Funky and Dixie Kong, and no game that has them in it could be bad.

Addictive games - Tracky Train. A screenshot shows a train stopping at a train station in a desert area. Text on the screen reads "drop off passengers!"

Tracky Train

Tracky Train is a lesser-known indie game that sees you laying down the tracks for a train which is speedily chuffing along behind you. You have to see how long you can keep things going before the train catches up to you and crashes. There are various locales that you pass through, and if you pass by a group of passengers, the train will stop to pick them up, giving you a bit of a lead. You have to be sure to guide the train into stations so that it can drop them off too, otherwise, it will fill up and won’t be able to pick up anyone else.

It’s a simple premise, for sure, but playing over and over again to out-do your high scores and to unlock bigger, better trains is very addictive. You’ll also want to encounter all of the different passengers that the game has to offer, all of which reference various figures from popular culture. Fun fact: Tracky Train is the debut appearance of popular indie character Yooka (of Yooka-Laylee fame).

Addictive games - Fire Emblem Heroes. Image shows a selection of characters in a grid-based map.

Fire Emblem Heroes

This game takes the turn-based strategy gameplay of the Fire Emblem series and condenses it to give you scenarios that take place on single-screen maps. At the same time, it acts as a celebration of Fire Emblem at large, with characters from every single game in its history unlockable through its gacha mechanics.

Because you’ll be building a team of characters who appeal to you, everybody’s experience of Fire Emblem Heroes is going to be very different. Maybe you’ll use a team of characters from Fire Emblem Awakening – or maybe you prefer the case of Three Houses? Maybe you’re even a Genealogy of the Holy War kind of person, either way, taking all these characters from the countless battles the game providers can get crazily addictive.

Addictive games - Pokémon GO. A screenshot shows Shaymin in the real world.

Pokémon Go

The game that encouraged people to go out and walk in ways that fitness apps could only ever dream about. Pokémon Go is probably the closest we’ll ever get to going out into the world as a Pokémon Trainer, and exploring new areas around where you live, just in the hopes of finding new Pokémon, or getting those extra steps in to hatch your egg, is absolutely amazing.

Then, of course, if you prefer the competitive side of Pokémon, you can try and hold the top position in a gym and enjoy the lucrative rewards that follow. It was an amazing game when it launched, and Niantic has just added more and more content ever since. Indeed, they’re still adding new content to this day, and with new Pokémon and features becoming available all the time, the experience is only going to get better and better.

Addictive games - Among Us. A screenshot shows a selection of astronauts aboard their ship.

Among Us

The game that put social deduction on the map. In the few years since its initial release, Among Us has been so successful, that the astronauts from the game are so iconic, that they’re pretty much on the level of Mario, Pikachu, Sonic, or Minecraft’s Steve.

If you’ve never played Among Us before, this is a game that sees you and a group of astronauts working to figure out which one of you is a murdered – meanwhile, if you are a murderer, it’s your job to keep slaughtering your colleagues without being detected, because there are periodic votes to determine who is the killer, and if they vote for you, you’re getting ejected into space. It’s fun with strangers, but especially enjoyable if you have a group of friends to play with.

Addictive games - Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Image shows a camp filled with buildings and animal villagers.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

Animal Crossing is another Nintendo series which has received the mobile game treatment. While other Animal Crossing games have seen you cultivating your own town or island, this one is about creating the ultimate camp. You do this by crafting different furniture and items to go in your camp, while also building relationships with villagers to persuade them to come stay.

Each day, you catch bugs, mine ore, catch fish, gather fruit, collect shells, and run errands for the animals who appear around the map. The animals will need you to do different things for them, and by doing so, you get them to give you valuable resources, while also solidifying your friendship with them. It’s not as comprehensive as something like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but it’s still a wonderful experience of its own, and one that will appeal to both old fans of the series, as well as newcomers.

Addictive games - Plants vs Zombies. A screenshot shows Peashooters shooting at zombies in the garden.

Plants vs. Zombies

Oh no! It’s a zombie apocalypse and the zombies are headed your way. Thank goodness you’re an expert gardener who has an army of plants read to protect you. As zombies walk toward you on the grid-based map of your garden, you plant plants in different spots so that they’re ready to defend you.

You can plant Sunflowers that generate ‘sun’ so that you can grow more plants, Peashooters, who spit peas at the zombies, making them slowly fall apart, Wall-nuts who act as walls for the zombies, and countless other quirky plants who help to defend you from a hoard of strange and bizarre zombies. Unlike many strategy games, which can be daunting at first, Plants vs. Zombies is really accessible, but it still manages to provide impressive amounts of nuance.

Addictive games - Fornite. An image shows a group of characters from the game.

Fortnite

Next up, we have another iconic one: Fortnite! Sitting on its throne alongside Among Us, Minecraft, and Roblox, Fortnite is one of the biggest games among the current generation of gamers, and sure enough, you can download and play Fortnite on your mobile devices.

It’s easy to see why this game has become so popular. Already, the idea of a hundred people battling it out in an ever-shrinking arena where they can build structures for self-defence is very appealing, but when you add to that the fact that this is one of the biggest crossovers ever created, and that you could see anyone from Darth Vader, to Batman, or Stranger Things’ Demogorgon, it’s easy to see how it cultivated such a following.

Addictive games - Tetris. A screenshot shows a Tetris game in progress.

Tetris

Though much older, Tetris is easily as recognisable as Fortnite. Since its first iteration was released in 1984, millions of people have been drawn to this simple block stacking game. Different shapes appear at the top of the screen, and you have to place them carefully at the bottom so that they make straight lines and then disappear. Anybody can understand it and anybody can enjoy it.

Over the years, there have been countless versions of Tetris released, and, of course, that includes a free version for mobile. If you want to have one of the most popular and addictive games ever made in your collection of mobile puzzle games, then you should definitely download Tetris today.

If you’re a huge Tetris fan, you might like to take a look at our guide on the best Tetris games on Switch and mobile.

Addictive games - Pokémon Shuffle Mobile. Image shows the logo and official artwork of the game on a phone screen.

Pokémon Shuffle Mobile

Have you ever played Candy Crush before? (Now, there’s a game that just narrowly avoided being on this list.) Well, Pokémon Shuffle Mobile is essentially the answer to the question “what if Candy Crush were a Pokémon game?” you have to slide around Pokémon faces so that you can match them up and attack wild Pokémon, and at the end, you’re given a chance to catch them, allowing them to be added to your rotation.

Of course, Pokémon often escape when you try to catch them, and you’ll probably find yourself replaying certain levels over and over again. Also, for what it’s worth, out of all the Pokémon games, there are more than you can catch in this game (without trading from others) than in any other instalment. That’s pretty impressive for a simple puzzle game.

Addictive games - Crossy Road. Image shows a penguin trying to navigate a difficult road.

Crossy Road

If you’re looking for an intense, free and fun addictive game, Crossy Road is the game for you. Crossy Road is a mobile game that was released in November 2014, since its release, it has had over 150 million downloads. In it, you have to earn coins to earn characters, and to get those coins you need to be able to stay alive for a long period of time without being hit by a car, train or eaten by an eagle.

You tap your phone screen for your character to move forward and you can drag it to change direction, you have to think carefully about when to go and when to turn, but you also have to be fast, as you also are being chased by an eagle so if you stand still for too long it will catch up and eat you. It’s one of those games that doesn’t require data or wi-fi to be played, this means that you can enjoy it anytime anywhere.

Addictive games - Clash of Clans, Image shows a large settlement in a field.

Clash of Clans

Clash of clans is a free-to-play game where you build the biggest village and become a very powerful threat by cultivating a large army. The game was created by Finnish developer Supercell in 2012. In it, you start with a town hall and basic defences you then get the ability to collect two of the three in-game currencies. You get gold out of mines, then you use it to build more mines. To store it you need a gold store which you can upgrade to store more gold. It is the same with the other currency elixir which you get with an elixir collector and store in an elixir store.

In the game when you upgrade your town hall you get access to lots of new things such as new defences and more mines and stores. To upgrade your town hall you have to meet some conditions such as barracks level 7 and a certain amount of walls placed. The barracks in Clash of Clans allows you to build an army costing different amounts of elixir depending on what types of troop you get. There are lots of different types of troops in the game which do lots of different things; you unlock the different types through various upgrades.

You’ll find yourself wanting to keep coming back to it so that you can upgrade your village even more all the time. The game keeps getting new content too, so it always stays fresh.

Addictive games, Subway Surfers - image shows a character running along on wires above train tracks.

Subway Surfers

Subway Surfers is a never-ending game where you have to dodge trains and obstacles while collecting coins and power-ups. This endless runner was released in mid-2012 and since then it’s been downloaded approximately 3 billion times, which makes it one of the most popular high score games on mobile ever. The developers, Kiloo and SYBO, constantly release updates which take you to new locations, with fresh challenges, boards to buy, characters to unlock and policemen to chase you.

The fast-paced game speeds up with the higher score you have, making it enjoyable but difficult to play for long periods of time, creating less time to react to jump, roll, or dodge. You can even match your high scores against friends with online leaderboards that connect through Facebook. The many boards have different effects, such as “smooth drift” which allows you to stay in the air for longer, or you could choose “super jump” which lets you jump higher onto the trains. The variety of ways to play, the competitiveness and constant updates will keep you hooked and you’ll soon be playing every day.

It combines the thrill of playing slots with the social battling of Clash of Clans to create something that you just can’t put down; in a good way. The problem is, you so often have to put it down if you’re not willing to fork out the cash for regular spins. That’s understandable when as little as 30 spins will set you back £1.99 in the UK or $1.99 in the US.

In this Coin Master blog, we’re going to provide you with all of the ways you can get your hands on a few free spins and a Coin Master bonus here and there. This will allow you to continue playing long after your daily free spins run out, and provide you with the means of getting extra, without the need to spend your hard-earned money on premium spins in the game’s store. How can I get Coin Master free spins?

Here are a bunch of tips to help you get even more free spins in Coin Master.

Follow Coin Master on social media

Each day, Moon Active, Coin Master’s developer, provides a bunch of links that you can follow to get your hands on Coin Master free spins. If you keep on top of this, you can get a steady stream of free stuff for very little effort. You can follow Coin Master on Facebook or Twitter.

Want more? Check out CodesDb for a powerful, searchable database of the latest game codes.

Sign up for email gifts

If you sign up for email gifts, you can get yourself a handful of Coin Master free spins every single day just by following a link on your phone. We haven’t encountered any spam from signing up so far either, so it’s a quick and easy method of getting yourself some tasty free spins.

Invite friends

Each time you invite a friend who successfully joins Coin Master through Facebook, you’ll get 40 Coin Master free spins, which is considerable. They don’t even have to actually play the game; they simply have to download it and log in via their Facebook account to get you the free spins. Of course, it’s in both your interests to actually play it, which brings us nicely to our next point.

Request spins as gifts

You can get up to 100 Coin Master free spins per day from friends, though to get to those heights you’ll need 100 active friends who are kind enough to send you a gift each day. Each gift consists of a single free spin.

Unless you’re incredibly popular, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll have 100 friends; let alone 100 that will actually deign to play a game with you. We recommend heading on over to the official Reddit community or Facebook communities to try and find people willing to play with you.

Watch video ads

You can get a limited number of Coin Master free spins per day by watching a video ad. Simply scroll to the slot machine and tap on the spin energy button on the bottom right. If it’s not there, you’ve run out of free spins you can get through this method for the day, but if it is, simply tap on it and you’ll watch an ad.

Spin

Ironically, you can actually get a ton of Coin Master free spins by, well, spinning. If you get three spin energy symbols in a row, you’ll get a bunch of free spins. Pick up a chain of them and you can spin for ages before you run out.

Level up your village

Each time you level up your village, you’ll get a bunch of Coin Master free spins. It’s not easy though, as it costs a considerable amount of gold to purchase new buildings and improve them, and you have to purchase every single one of them, including improvements, to level up. That’s going to cost a lot of spins, as it is.

Looking for a new game? Take a look at our Free Fire redeem codes, My Singing Monsters breeding guide, or even our Pokédex!

Participate in events

There’s almost always at least one event happening in Coin Master, and it can absolutely shower you with free spins. While viewing the slot machine, look at the top right of the screen. Any virtual buttons that you can see beneath the menu (which is displayed as three lines) are an event. Tap on one and you’ll see what each event involves.

Take advantage of these events and you can get yourself a lot more Coin Master free spins than usual.

Wait

This is an obvious suggestion, but it’s actually worth taking into consideration. You get five free spins every single hour, and you can only hold a maximum of 50 spins at any one time. That means every ten hours you’ll hit the maximum number of spins, and any Coin Master free spins you would have earned after that will cease to exist.

So, we recommend setting a reminder to visit Coin Master every ten hours at least to spend your spins so you are always earning more. You’ll actually end up earning a huge number of extra spins if you’re dedicated, so it’s totally worth doing.

Coin Master free spin FAQ

Now, we’ll answer a bunch of questions you may have regarding getting Coin Master free spins.

Do Coin Master free spins links expire?

Yes, the daily links that we include at the top of this page expire after three days, which is why we only include those from today and the two days prior.

Can I get 50 Coin Master free spins?

Coin Master 50 spin rewards most commonly appear during in-game events, like those that reward you for raiding or battling other players. There’s also a small chance to get this number from daily links, so bookmark this page and check back often.

Can I get 60 Coin Master free spins?

Yes, though it doesn’t appear to happen often from daily links. We’d recommend playing often and participating in events, and following the social media channels to find out what’s happening soon.

Can I get 70 Coin Master free spins?

We’ve never seen a Coin Master 70 spin reward appear as part of the daily links, but it has been known to appear as part of special events.

To get your hands on this rare reward, we would recommend playing on a daily basis and following social media channels to get an indication of when the next big event will take place.

Can I get 100 Coin Master free spins?

Yes, though not from the daily links. We’ve seen this number of free spins appear often during in-game events, most notably for those that reward you for raiding and participating in PvP battles.

Play often and follow the social media channels for events to keep an eye out for this.

Can I get 50,000 Coin Master free spins?

Again, 50,000 Coin Master spin rewards don’t seem to appear as part of the daily rewards cycle, but have been known to crop up during events. Follow the socials and play regularly to get the best chance at this reward.

Players worry that Roblox games events could be ending

Many Roblox games fans and content creators took to the internet on February 18 to express their confusion as Roblox’s events tab has been removed. The feature was a staple of the Roblox community and had been in the game since early in the game’s history.

The news was shared on Twitter by YouTuber KreekCraft, who shared a screenshot of the Roblox homepage showing where the events tab used to be. He said, “There are now zero references to events on Roblox. It’s over. We lost.”

This was followed by a reply from Asimo, the developer of Roblox game Jailbreak, saying that the events tab will be replaced by a new event page that will feature both sponsored Roblox events and developer events that you can sort through with a filter. Asimo does not work for Roblox but according to RTC he is known to have direct connections with the Roblox team, making him a fairly reliable source.

Players are hoping that this move to a new events page will also mean the return of popular Roblox events like the Roblox Egg Hunt and Roblox Battles.

Honkai Star Rail relics – what they are and where to find them

Each new Honkai Star Rail beta has given us a look into different elements of the gameplay, and one of the most recent additions was Honkai Star Rail relics. If you’re familiar with Hoyoverse’s other title Genshin Impact, then you can think of relics as like artifacts. They’re relatively new to the game, so let’s dive in and explore the world of HSR relics.

We’ve got guides on everything you need to know about Hoyoverse’s newest turn-based RPG, including all the Honkai Star Rail characters, a Honkai Star Rail tier list, and information on the Honkai Star Rail release date. Plus, we’re prepared for when the first Honkai Star Rail codes drop too.

What are Honkai Star Rail relics?

Relics are the main way in Honkai Star Rail that you can boost your stats. There’s a range of buffs and set bonuses on offer that benefit different characters, so you can mix and match them to best suit your build. You can equip a maximum of six relics to any one character and you get additional bonuses for using multiple of the same set.

Honkai Star Rail relics: An in-game menu showing four relics equipped to a character.

There are six different types of relic. Each of them has a main stat, which you can see below.

Relic type Potential stats
Head HP
Hands Attack
Body Defence
Feet %ATK / %DEF / %HP / Speed
Neck %ATK / %DEF / %HP / Elemental Damage Bonus
Article %ATK / %DEF / %HP / %Crit Rate / %Crit Damage / Outgoing Healing Boost / Effect Hit Rate

After that, the relic has a set of substats, determined by RNG. As you level up the relic, a random substat will be added or upgraded at certain intervals. Here are the potential substats, each of which can either come as a flat rate or a percentage increase:

  • Attack
  • HP
  • Defence
  • Elemental damage bonus
  • Crit rate
  • Crit damage
  • Outgoing healing boost
  • Effect hit rate

Each set of relics has a bonus for using multiple relics from the same set. There’s bonuses for using two, four, and five of the same relic type, so you can use a full set or mix and match sets with a 2:1 ratio depending on the character.

Honkai Star Rail relics: A range of relics at different rarity levels.

What Honkai Star Rail relics are there?

There are only a handful of relic sets available in the Honkai Star Rail beta, and most of them benefit different types of character builds, so we can’t say which relics are better than others just yet. We can tell you what they each do though, so keep reading for a run-down of the relic set bonuses.

We’ve recommended some characters for each relic set too, and you can click on their name to see our full build guide.

How do I get Honkai Star Rail relics?

It takes a bit of time before you unlock relics, but once you get them they’re definitely worth paying attention to. To unlock relics, you need to reach Trailblazer level 15 and get a decent way through the main story on Jarilo VI. Once you reach that point, you can farm them from various Calyx domains.

Similar to the resin system in Genshin Impact, you need to use Trailblaze Power to claim rewards from Calyx domains. This power regenerates over time to a max of 180, or you can manually top up by using fuel or Stellar Jade.

There you have it, everything you need to know about Honkai Star Rail relics. Bookmark this page and come back when we’ve discovered more about which relic sets are best for each character. If you fancy a different adventure, check out our Genshin Impact artifacts guide.

Aether Gazer release date predictions, pre-registration, and more

After the game having seen a successful CBT during the fall of 2022, we’re eagerly anticipating news of the upcoming Aether Gazer release date. This enthralling new mobile gacha RPG from Yostar Games gives you an insight into the new beginning of human consciousness, set in a vivid, dystopic, sci-fi landscape full of colourful characters and kickass combat. So let’s gaze into Gaea, as we go over how to sign up for Aether Gazer pre-registrations, the game’s release window, trailers, and more.

Of course, there are plenty of other gacha games coming out this year, and we do our best to keep on top of them all. So, for more gacha goodness, check out our Honkai Star Rail release date, Under Oath release date, and Zenless Zone Zero release date guides to put more titles on your radar.

When is the Aether Gazer release date?

Aether Gazer’s EN version was originally due to release in 2022. However, Yostar announced that the Aether Gazer EN release date is now due sometime in 2023. While this delay may seem disappointing at first, Yostar clarified the reason for the delay, stating that ‘part of the content we want to provide still needs more time to get polished’.

In addition to this polish, Yostar has confirmed that it’s working on plenty of quality of life updates, the implementation of English voice dubbing in time for the official release (rather than only having the option for Japanese audio with English subtitles), and German and French in-game display language options.

So, currently, we’re unsure of a specific release date – and we don’t think Yostar has one set in stone yet, either – but we believe it shouldn’t be too long until we get our first taste of Gaea, and we’ll be sure to update this guide as soon as we know more.

How do I sign up for Aether Gazer pre-registration?

You can pre-register for Aether Gazer through the game’s official website. Simply click on the pre-register button on the main page, scroll down past the pre-registration bonuses, and enter your email into the text box below. This should notify you about any news of the upcoming Aether Gazer release date. Alternatively, you can also keep this page bookmarked, or follow the official Aether Gazer Twitter and Facebook pages.

Is there an Aether Gazer trailer?

You betcha – there’s actually quite a few. Check out the latest teaser trailer above to get a sneak peek at the action, or head over to the official Aether Gazer YouTube channel to check out what other glimpses you can gaze at.

That’s all we’ve got on Aether Gazer for now, but we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop as soon as we find out more. For now, go ahead and pass the time with a couple of gems from our list of the best games like Genshin Impact.
