Monster Farm 2 is coming to mobile in Japan this fall

Monster Farm 2, or Monster Rancher 2 depending on where you live, is a PlayStation game originally released in Japan in 1999. The developer, Koei Tecmo Games, has confirmed that its been working on a remaster for the Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. We can expect to see the game released sometime in the fall of this year, though it is only coming to Japan at this time.

The best way to describe Monster Farm 2 is a monster fighting game. Gameplay involves breeding and raising the strongest monsters to win tournaments. The more tournaments you win, the more monsters and moves you unlock.

There is no word yet if the classic monster breeding game will make its way to the Western world. However, seeing as the original Monster Farm took the best part of half a year to make its way to the US and EU, we may be in luck soon. The news was released on the official Monster Farm Twitter account earlier today, and its clear fans of the series are excited as they have retweeted the post over 12k times.

Although very little information is available on the Famitsu site, the release does mention that there will be new features added to the game, beyond just a faithful remaster.

Beyond a Steel Sky launches tomorrow on Apple Arcade

Revolution has announced the Beyond a Steel Sky release date, and it’s tomorrow, June 26.  Yes, we were surprised too! The developer has been putting the finishing touches on the cyberpunk Apple Arcade game since recently revealing a glimpse of what’s to come in a Beyond a Steel Sky trailer from IGN.

The story trailer gives us a peek at Union City and also shows off some of the game’s quirky cast. It mainly serves, however, to set the game’s story in motion. You’re playing as Robert Foster, a grizzled chap in a trench coat who is about to play detective – as is the cyberpunk way. A child has been stolen from a peaceful desert community and following his trail brings you to a sprawling metropolis of flying cars and high-tech.

But now we have a Beyond a Steel Sky release date, it looks like you won’t have to wait long to join Foster, and dive into the Cyberpunk world of Steel Sky.

Beyond a Steel Sky is a sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky, which came out in 1994. There are plenty of gameplay differences to make it more accessible to modern players. The most notable is the leap from a 2D point-and-click side scroller to a 3D adventure game. You can still expect plenty of puzzles to solve, though.

New Rules of Survival update will introduce trains and drones

Rules of Survival turns two-and-a-half years old this week, so developer NetEase is launching a new update to celebrate. The event is called 624 Rush Hour and introduces new vehicles and weapons alongside login rewards. You won’t have to wait long, either, as the Rules of Survival update goes live June 24, 2020.

The first significant change is trains, which you can board for combat as they dot along their specific routes. If you win out, you can take advantage of the mounted heavy machine gun to batter your foes. There’s also a respawn mod on the train so you can revive downed teammates, too. The drone is a sneakier alternative that you can pilot from afar. It has a machine mounted for damage and detonates on-demand to damage groups of people.

There’s also another piece of equipment called ‘The Scroll’, which is somewhat mysterious. It’s described as a magical parchment that gives its holder a gift every time they find one. We’re not sure what those gifts are, but apparently, the scrolls belonged to ninjas so that might be a hint.

Finally, there are login rewards, too. Boot up the game from tomorrow onwards to snag loot such as a Supply Coupon and an Avatar Frame. There are more goodies if you convince others to jump in, too.

A new Metal Slug game is being made for mobile

Looks like we’re set for a new Metal Slug game on mobile from Neo Geo developer SNK Interactive. That comes from South Korean publication Inven (Thanks, Siliconera), which reports that the upcoming mobile game is “80% complete”, and is set to come to iOS and Android.

The new Metal Slug game has yet to be revealed officially, so we don’t have a name just yet. That said, the report describes the game as a 2D side scrolling card-type game. There’s no word on a release date either, but SNK are apparently hopeful of releasing their console Metal Slug game in 2020, so we could see something similar here. Inven also quotes SNK Interactive CEO Jeon Se-hwan as saying the game will target ten to 20 and 30 to 40 year olds – as a 28-year-old, I don’t know how to feel about this.

The report also clarifies that the new Metal Slug mobile game has nothing to do with the project that is being worked on by Tencent’s Timi Studio – so you may have two new Metal Slug games to play soon. Details on that project are thin on the ground, but we’ll report back if we stumble across anything.

In case you’re unaware, Metal Slug is a run-and-gun shoot ’em up that puts in the boots of military cadets. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one, though, as Metal Slug 7 launched way back in 2008 on the Nintendo DS before showing up on the PSP a year later as Metal Slug XX.

Gwent’s next expansion is coming out this month

There’s some good news if you’re looking to freshen up your Gwent deck with some new cards. CD Projekt Red has revealed that the game is getting another free expansion for iOS and Android. The Gwent Master Mirror release date is set for June 30, 2020, so there’s not long to wait at all.

The new Gwent expansion adds more than 70 new cards that are themed around Witcher 3 baddie Gaunter O’Dimm and his role in the events of the Continent’s history. In amongst these new cards, you can find faction-specific ones and a new Legendary card type that evolves in both appearance and power as your fight rumbles on. You’ll also find 11 neutral cards that can be used in any of Gwent’s factions. If that’s not enough, the Master Mirror update also introduces new statuses and abilities. So there’s plenty of new tools for strategising.

While the Gwent Master Mirror release date is a wee bit away, pre-order offers have already been added to the Gwent store in-game. If you check out these offers, you’ll find packs that will grant you new cards from the expansion when it comes out, alongside a unique Gaunter O’Dimm leader skin. There’s also a Master Mirror-inspired cardback and title in certain packs that are ready to equip in-game after you get ’em.

In case you’ve been out of the loop, Gwent is a turn-based card game that was initially playable in The Witcher 3 before it got a standalone release on iOS and then Android. Each game is played between two people and lasts three rounds. Each deck has at least 25 cards and comes from a different faction that affects your playstyle. You could be a beta tester for Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower

Perchang has announced that it is on the lookout for beta testers for the upcoming strategy game, Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower. Based on the popular Games Workshop board game of the same name, Silver Tower doesn’t take place in the classic Warhammer Fantasy setting, but instead uses the Mortal Realms of Age of Sigmar. In a similar vein to other Warhammer games like Vermintide or Chaosbane, Silver Tower revolves around a band of heroes from a variety of different races who make their home in the world.

Each of these heroes has a particular combat focus, so it’s safe to say that the Fyreslayer – the axe wielding Dwarf we see in the trailer – is a melee blender, whereas the armoured and shielded Stormcast will more likely trend towards tankiness.

The campaign sees you and your heroes face off against monsters from throughout the realms, as the Gaunt Summoner – who we guess is that guy with all the eyes – challenges you to a number of trials. Silver Tower will launch with over 100 stages to play, so you’ll have no problem finding foes to crush.

Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower has ten upgradable heroes, but we’re really excited to see how a Warhammer game using Age of Sigmar as a setting might change up the usual Warhammer hero roster of elf, human, wizard, and dwarf.

Pokémon Go gets an online leaderboard later today

Right in time for the bank holiday weekend (depending where you are), Niantic is gearing up to drop an exciting new feature in Pokémon Go: online leaderboards. These tie into the Go Battle League feature, and provide you with a list of the top 500 players statistically. The leaderboard hasn’t gone live yet, but you’ll be able to see it at the official Pokémon Go live website as soon as the Go Battle League changes to Master League from Ultra.

The leaderboard will detail the top 500 players’ nicknames, teams, ranks, ratings, and the total number of battles played. This information is taken from the previous day’s statistics, and will update between 20:00 and 22:00 UTC each day. If you want to make it on the leaderboard, you’ll not only have to be a good enough battler, but you’ll also have to ensure that you don’t have an offensive nickname.

To celebrate the launch of the Go Battle League leaderboards, Niantic is hosting a Go Battle Day event on Sunday, which features the Pokémon Marill. The more battles you perform between 11:00 and 14:00 in your local time zone, the higher the chance you’ll have of encountering the fan-favourite Pokémon.

Marill will also appear as a guaranteed reward after your first and third wins, though those who own a premium battle pass will get Marill after every single win. All players will also receive twice the normal amount of stardust for catching Marill.

Niantic is also extending the number of battles you can perform for the entirety of Sunday (in your local time). Rather than the five sets of battles you can typically perform, Niantic is increasing this to 20. That’s a whopping 100 battles for those who want to participate.

The award-winning platformer Gris is out now on Android

April 2, 2020 Gris is now available on Android, and you can find a link to download it at the bottom of this story.

Winner of the Game Awards, ‘Games For Impact’ category, Gris is launching on Android later this week. Following the journey of a girl of the same name, Gris explores ideas of sorrow and grief in a fading world, her dress granting powers which she uses to traverse its many obstacles. Released in December 2018, and launching on iOS at the same time, Gris can be counted as one of the most critically acclaimed indie games of the past couple of years.

In particular, the game was praised for how it dealt with the subject of grief, but also its gorgeous visual aesthetic, and its enchanting soundtrack. Having already cemented its place on mobile with a wonderful iOS port, this Android release has been a long time coming.

Your journey through Gris is somewhat similar to Hellblade (though with far less stabbing of Norse spirits) as you gradually help her recover strength, represented in the powers linked to her dress, and to find acceptance in regards to whatever sorrowful event brought her to this strange plane of existence.

There have been a number of games dealing with mental health in recent years, whether Hellblade, or Sea of Solitude, but with a memorable art style and soundtrack, Gris has carved out some recognition for itself. It was also highly successful considering it was the first game of Barcelona-based developer, Nomada Studio; a collaboration between two ex triple-A developers.

It’s plain to see how inventive Gris is in terms of its gameplay, combining aspects of endless runners, platforming, puzzle, and Metroidvania in terms of abilities. But most of all, the game was recognised for creating a relaxing, therapeutic play experience, mirroring the restorative journey of its protagonist.
