Inside Xbox Series X|S Optimized: The Touryst

One of the biggest benefits of all that power is giving developers the ability to make games that are Xbox Series X|S Optimized. This means that they’ve taken full advantage of the unique capabilities of Xbox Series X|S, both for new titles built natively using the Xbox Series X|S development environment as well as previously released titles that have been rebuilt specifically for the console. In our Inside Xbox Series X|S Optimized series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of how they’re optimizing their titles for Xbox Series X and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with Manfred Lizner, CEO at Shin’en about optimizing The Touryst for Xbox Series X|S.

Q: What excites you most about developing and bringing The Touryst to life on next-generation hardware?

A: The Touryst uses a very stylized and fresh art style for its game world. The increased hardware power allowed us to refine this look to a “perfect pixel” level. It now feels very much like playing a fun CGI movie.

Q: How will these enhancements impact a player’s experience with The Touryst?

A: We hope the perfect image and presentation draws everyone deeper into the gameplay.

Q: Why did you choose to focus on increased resolution and 120 fps, as enhancement areas for The Touryst?

A: We felt our game already had a near perfect look with its stylized environments and lush colors. So improving overall quality with much higher resolution and twice the frame rate was the right decision. As we created only console and handheld games in the last 20 years we supported with our in-house engine only 60fps. Quite a lot of work went into achieving 120 fps, but with the immense hardware power in back we had little difficulties to achieve that.

Q: How do you expect fans of The Touryst will respond to playing it on Xbox Series X|S with these enhancements?

A: We tried to make The Touryst a very fresh experience. And a console launch is perfect to try out something new and unique. So we hope a lot of players will enjoy this adventure.

Q: What is it like developing on Xbox Series X|S?

A: As a developer, it’s cool to tap into so much hardware potential!

Q: What does Xbox Series X|S development enable in current or future projects that you could not have achieved with the previous generation of consoles?

A: I hope loading screens become a thing of the past. The Touryst has none! 🙂

Welcome to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

“It’s time we took a peek behind the Iron Curtain.” – Russell Adler, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Ready to make history?

It’s time to blow up a Cold War conspiracy decades in the making with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the direct sequel to the original and epic Black Ops. Jump into the 3 explosive modes of play: a mind-bending single-player Campaign, a bold new chapter in the cooperative Zombies mode and an action-packed Multiplayer mode, all connected to deliver a creative and immersive experience for fans. Black Ops Cold War expands access for players on all platforms with new and revamped crossplay and cross-progression features. Multiplayer and Zombies will also share a new progression system and players will be able to earn the prominent Prestige Master title in every future Season that is released. Study up on the features and content packed into this iconic game.

Campaign

Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Jason Hudson make their return in the single-player experience to navigate through deniable operations, where nothing is really as it seems. From creating your own operative or playing as Mason, your mission is to chase down the Soviet agent ‘Perseus’, a myth who has appeared after decades of dormancy, and save the world from unimaginable disaster. Each Mission in the Campaign will offer different scenarios for you to play through, from long-range combat and close quarter to stealth and all-out warfare.

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War

Multiplayer

The iconic Multiplayer experience expands the vast suite of fun and competitive modes with a revamped progression system and customizable loadouts in Black Ops Cold War. Team up and face off with other members in the Call of Duty community and drop into the signature modes of Team Deathmatch, Free-For-All, Domination and more. Multiplayer will also bring back the 6v6 mode Control, which tasks players to capture or defend two objectives on the map, as well as introduce the all-new VIP Escort, where a team must escort one player successfully to an exfil site or eliminate the opposing team to win. For larger combat modes, players can battle each other in vehicles within the 12v12 Combined Arms or fight for supremacy against 10 squads of four operators in Fireteam: Dirty Bomb.

Create the best loadout for your playstyle and dominate the battle with the ultra-customizable Create-a-Class, a rule-breaking Wildcard and a resourceful Field Upgrade. By racking up Scorestreaks from repeated eliminations, earn powerful rewards that include heavy-hitting weaponry to controllable aerial vehicles to keep your lead in the fight against other players.

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War

Zombies

Fight off legions of undead horrors in this co-op experience, featuring you and up to three other Operators. As agents of Requiem, a CIA-backed international response team led by Grigori Weaver, your mission is to investigate and suppress supernatural anomalies around the world.

To battle against the waves of the undead and maintain global order, Requiem agents will have access to upgradeable Perks and an arsenal of Cold War-era weaponry. Agents will also go head-to-head with the rival Soviet-led Omega Group, who have taken a keen interest in studying and harnessing the anomalies, as well as unraveling mysterious secrets that have been left hidden over the decades.

The next co-op top down arcade shooter will also be included to play with either yourself or a team of four in the Zombies menu. Survive as long as you can through expansive open world areas, challenging new arenas, bonus areas and randomly generated dungeons.

Post-Launch Content and Warzone: Live seasons are on the schedule for post-launch plans and will feature plenty of new and free post-release content for all players. These live seasons will also integrate into the next evolution of Warzone, which now features Black Ops Cold War operators.

Fights in Tight Spaces Packs a Punch Exclusively on Xbox Game Preview

Fights in Tight Spaces was first pitched to me as a unique spin on the deckbuilding genre, an attempt to combine the complex strategy of games like Slay the Spire with the positional tactics of Into the Breach.

Obviously that’s quite an ambitious concept! Fights action movie-style theming really helped to tie those two aspects together, however. The core idea of, “What if you could make the key decisions in a tense fight scene?” underpinned the game’s early development and continues to inform its design direction. Plus, it’s always fun to smack some bad guys around – I thought that aspect could well bring in a wider audience who might not be immediately drawn to a strategy title.

Fights in Tight Spaces

Lead Designer James Parker at Bristol, UK development studio Ground Shatter prototyped the game initially using a physical board and game pieces before writing a single line of code, helping to cement the positional aspects.

Early on, the main design challenge was around given the player sufficient scope to move around without letting movement become wildly overpowered. This led to the creation of our combo system, which rewards the player with an additional resource for stringing attacks together successfully. This also unlocked a secondary strategic dimension: do you wait to build up combo for a powerful attack or take out an enemy early on to give yourself more space?

Fights in Tight Spaces

Dynamic enemy interactions are a big part of the game: shoving enemies, throwing them, stunning them and dodging their attacks enables you to play them off against each other and turn the situation to your advantage. You can choose to build your deck around this or focus more on striking and power: it’s very important to us that players can take a creative approach to solving problems.

Developing the metagame for Fights has involved some significant contributions from our community, who played early versions and were particularly adept at finding cheesy strategies to break the game early on! After some significant balancing work, we’re in a great place and looking forward to bringing the game to Xbox Game Preview and a wider audience. The game will continue to evolve over time and we’re excited to see where our community takes us.

Fights in Tight Spaces

You can check out Fights in Tight Spaces exclusively in Game Preview on Xbox One now, with an optimized version available via Smart Delivery on Xbox Series X|S.

This game is a work in progress. It may or may not change over time or release as a final product. Purchase only if you are comfortable with the current state of the unfinished game. In an era where espionage is handled largely by data-packets being pored over by teams of analysts, Section Eleven’s approach is more hands-on, dealing with the sorts of criminal organisations who live and operate outside the realms of electronic communication. When the rest of the intelligence services have failed, they call Section Eleven.
As a Section Eleven agent it is your job to find direct solutions to emerging threats… largely by smashing people’s faces into things. The game blends deck-building, turn-based tactics, and thrilling animated fight sequences in classic action-movie settings. Learn to balance your hand, momentum, and positioning to overcome the odds to defeat your adversaries. Pick from over 150 cards as you build a deck to suit your play style and your opponents’. Encounter random events, acquire enhancements (or injuries), and make critical choices about how best to upgrade your agent for the fights ahead. How Yazuka: Like a Dragon Breaks Away from Tradition, Available Today on Xbox Series X|S

The latest instalment in the Yakuza franchise has dropped today on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It’s got a new over the top RPG format, but Yakuza: Like a Dragon has a few surprises hidden up its well-tailored sleeves. The new story will have you wanting to be a Japanese gangster-with-a-heart all over again.

Yazuka: Like a Dragon

In the previous Yakuza main series, you play as Kazuma Kiryu, a complex, honour-bound character who helps civilians and children, believes in justice and doesn’t mind using brute force to attain it. We’ve seen Kiryu rise through the ranks of the Tojo Clan, and his backstory comes to life across the series and especially in Yakuza 0, set in 1988 – 17 years prior to the debut Yakuza game and plot. Kiryu is in every main game up to the last Yakuza 6: The Song of Life and we think he’s earned a well-deserved break.

Yazuka: Like a Dragon

Yakuza: Like a Dragon departs from Kiryu’s story and deals with that of protagonist Ichiban Kasuga who has quite a different personality from stoic Kiryu! He is optimistic (often to a fault), sometimes naïve and absolutely full of energy so anyone well-versed in the typical feel of a Yakuza game should get ready for a big injection of F-U-N.

The main plot entails Kasuga searching for the truth after his clan mysteriously abandoned and betrayed him. Throughout the game you’ll meet a variety of characters – like a rogue cop and a hostess with her own mission – that join you on your quest. With their help you uncover the truth, defeat the baddies and release your inner dragon, naturally. The new location of Yokohama is your visually stunning, semi-realistic Japanese backdrop and you’ll find so many mini-games on your journey, it’s unreal; kart racing, batting cages, arcades and everyone’s favourite, karaoke. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a game with quite a few notable firsts including a dynamic RPG party system and an optional English voice dub featuring George Takei.

This Yakuza game is like no other and whether you’re completely new to the franchise or you’re an avid devotee, get ready to clear your calendar because Yakuza: Like a Dragon is going to keep you busy.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

SEGA

RISE LIKE A DRAGON Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking grunt of a low-ranking yakuza family in Tokyo, faces an 18-year prison sentence after taking the fall for a crime he didn’t commit. Never losing faith, he loyally serves his time and returns to society to discover that no one was waiting for him on the outside, and his clan has been destroyed by the man he respected most. Confused and alone, he embarks on a mission to discover the truth behind his family’s betrayal and take his life back, becoming an unlikely hero for the city’s outcasts on his journey. LEVEL UP FROM UNDERDOG TO DRAGON IN DYNAMIC RPG COMBAT Experience dynamic RPG combat like none other. Switch between 19 unique Jobs ranging from Bodyguard to Musician, and use the battlefield as your weapon. Take up bats, umbrellas, bikes, street signs, and everything else at your disposal to crack some skulls! ENTER THE UNDERWORLD PLAYGROUND When you’re not busy bashing heads, relax by hitting up the local arcade for some classic SEGA games, compete with locals in a no holds barred go-kart race around Yokohama, complete 50 unique substories, or just take in the scenery of a modern-day Japanese city. There’s always something new around the corner. Russian and Brazilian Portuguese subtitles available in early 2021 via patch update.

There’s a ton in store on November 10 – next-gen is so close; I can almost taste it. We have EA Play coming to console for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, a slew of new games coming your way, and a Perk that will have you staring out into the distance thinking this is the way. Let’s get to it!

EA Play Coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC on December 15

This one isn’t a single game but a whole Play List of them for you PC players – coming December 15, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Game Pass for PC members will be able to download and play games from the EA Play library on Windows 10 PCs via the EA Desktop app currently in beta! If you’ve ever wanted to be a Jedi, ride around in a Titan, or join the Inquisition, now’s your time to shine (ok that was a pretty bad Bejeweled joke, even for me).

“We want players to access the games and in-game benefits they want, in the easiest way possible,” said Autumn Brown Sr. Director, Content Strategy and Partnerships, Electronic Arts. “This partnership with Xbox makes an impressive library of great Xbox and EA content more readily accessible. Our goal is to give players more choice to get more of what they love, and this is a way to do that.“

We’re all excited about EA Play coming to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC at no additional cost. It’s another huge library of games for you to play, so my apologies for all the time you’re going to spend updating your ordered play list (for those of you who are far more organized in your play time than me!).

EA Play Available on Xbox consoles with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Tomorrow

Starting November 10, EA Play will be available on Xbox consoles as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at no additional cost! EA Play is bringing more than 60 of EA’s biggest and best games like FIFA 20, Titanfall 2 and Need for Speed Heat, as well as some of EA’s most popular franchises like Battlefield, Mass Effect, Skate, and The Sims.

Select EA Play Games Available on Android via Cloud Gaming

We’re also adding these games to the growing list of titles available on Android via cloud gaming – they’ll be available beginning November 10:

Xbox Game Pass - Coming Soon - November 2020
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition
  • Madden NFL 20
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda
  • Mirror’s Edge Catalyst
  • Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2
  • The Sims 4
  • Unravel 2

So, get your Android devices ready to play. I’ll be shouting, “For the Inquisition!” right alongside you!

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered (Console & PC) – November 12
It is a time of war. The Republic of Galbadia, under the influence of the sorceress Edea, mobilizes its great armies against the other nations of the world. Squall and other members of SeeD, an elite mercenary force, join hands with Rinoa, a resistance fighter, to fight against Galbadia’s tyrannical rule and to prevent Edea from fulfilling her ultimate goal.

Gonner2 (Android) ID@Xbox – November 12
Joining the cloud gaming (beta) library on Android with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and available now on console & PC. The altruistic and unexpected hero Ikk is back and this time Death needs his help. Journey your way through deep dark chaotic places with unimaginable sparks of color as you go on a mission to help Death rid a mysterious presence from her lair. Battle crazy bosses, lose your head (a lot), in this messy, cute, fast-paced procedurally-generated platformer. In addition to the single-player journey to help Death, play the party co-op mode so you and your friends can lose your heads together!

Streets of Rogue (PC) ID@Xbox – November 12
Streets of Rogue is a rogue-lite about player choice, freedom, and anarchic fun. The game takes inspiration from fast-paced top-down rogue-lites and adds free-form, experimentation-driven, emergent gameplay elements of immersive sims and RPGs. Rather than taking place in a dungeon, the game is set in a functioning, procedurally generated city, where complex AI informs denizens from all walks of life, who are just trying to get by in their daily activities.

Ark: Survival Evolved: Explorer’s Edition (Android, Console & PC) ID@Xbox – November 17
Combining the base game (already available with Xbox Game Pass) with 3 massive Expansion Packs, Ark: Survival Evolved Explorer’s Edition is an ultimate way to get even more dinosaur action! Each DLC is available for individual download as well.

Halo MCC: Halo 4 (PC) – November 17
Halo 4 joins The Master Chief Collection as the sixth and final chapter of the epic saga. Now optimized for PC, witness the Master Chief’s triumphant return to battle an ancient evil bent on vengeance and annihilation. Shipwrecked on a mysterious world, faced with new enemies and deadly technology, the universe will never be the same.

River City Girls (Android, Console & PC) ID@XboxNovember 19
In this all-new entry in the legendary beat-’em-up series, hot-blooded heroes Kunio and Riki have been captured, leaving it to their hard-hitting girlfriends, Kyoko and Misako, to serve up some payback. As you punch and kick your way across town – either solo or with a friend in local co-op – you’ll gain new skills, chow down on power-ups, wield an assortment of weapons, and unleash an arsenal of combos, throws, and special attacks that will leave the bad guys crying for mama – all in outrageous 16-bit style! The awesome action is punctuated by manga story panels, anime cutscenes, and an epic synth-pop soundtrack. It’s an old-school rumble for a new generation!

Star Renegades (Android & Console) ID@Xbox – November 19
Star Renegades is a strategy RPG about outsmarting AI-driven adversaries, forging friendships, and toppling galactic empires spanning over multiple generations. Fusing a reactive, tactical turn-based battle system that emphasizes interrupts and counters, with a procedurally generated and emergent mission-based campaign and an intelligent Adversary system with enemy officers that evolve and move up in the ranks, every playthrough is unique, challenging, and never the same.

Meet Luke Preece – The Man Behind the New Gears Tactics Poster

A profile picture of Luke Preece in black-and-white

ABOUT

Luke Preece is an illustrator based in the West Midlands in the United Kingdom. A child of the 80’s raised on a mixture of Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comics, Movies and Metal music.

Clients include 2000 AD Comics, Marvel, Lucas Film, Metallica, Slipknot, Ozzy, Sony Music, Music For Nations, Santa Cruz Skateboards, Metal Hammer, Xbox, Gears of War, Tony Hawk, Activision, Rockstar Energy Drink and more. He also collaborates with various galleries on limited screen-prints for various exhibitions, gig posters and events around the globe.

Let’s get the generic question out of the way – tell us, what are your main influences for your art? How would you describe your art style?

Growing up I was (and still am) a big fan of heavy metal music and a lot of the art that went alongside that. Whether it be album covers, t-shirts, going to shows and just the whole alternative scene in general. I’m sure that sank in from a very young age and came out later through my work. Outside of that, I read comics like 2000 AD. I was lucky enough to work for 2000 AD as a graphic designer for around 9 years. I still continue to work with them as a freelancer on the odd piece of cover art which is great. I also attempted skateboarding, played guitar in bands – which I did for many years then decided to later focus on my art full time. I’m sure all of this has influenced everything I do in some way.

With regards to ‘art style’ – this is something that has organically evolved over years of experimenting and trying different things. I feel it has a graphic detailed feel to it. I tend to work mostly with the screen-print medium in mind. I do a lot of gig posters and t-shirts for bands like Metallica, for example. I’m a big fan of the screen-printing process – which again links back to the art I’ve admired over the years. Whether it be band t-shirts, gig posters or even skateboards – these tended to be screen-printed. I always loved the way it made the art look. The limited colour palettes. Even the smell of the ink. There’s also something very ‘garage / punk rock’ about that way of doing things… which I like.

What do you use to work on and is everything hand-drawn? You post a lot of progress videos with a lot of hand-drawing small details!

Yep, everything is hand drawn from scratch. All artwork is created using Wacom devices with Adobe Photoshop. I use the Wacom Cintiq Pro 24″ with the Wacom Engine. I also use the Mobile Studio Pro 16″ if I’m on the move. I don’t use any fancy tricks, it’s just lots of drawing with one or two basic brushes in Photoshop. Think about it like I’m using a pen on a digital canvas. This is the closest thing to real drawing but done digitally. Before that I would have inked with bush pens and microns… which I still enjoy occasionally.

Do you listen to anything while you’re working? Anything we should check out?

As much as I’m a metal head I do tend to listen to a mixture of genre’s whilst working. Most stuff tends to be from the 90s because I’m old. But there is some newer stuff in there too…

Massive Attack, DJ Shadow, HEALTH, Run The Jewels, Ice T, Turnstile, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Slipknot, Mastodon, David Bowie, Deftones, Kerbdog, Therapy?, Kid Loco, The XX, This Will Destroy You, The Cinematic Orchestra, Silverchair, Daft Punk, Thrice, Baroness, Sepultura (Chaos AD / Arise era) Code Orange, Employed To Serve, Architects, The Cure, Creature, Down, Pantera, Faith No More, Gojira, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Helmet… I mean I could just keep going. Too many to name.

Love a good Podcast too! I can highly recommend Adam Buxton’s Podcast, The Gallery of Everything, Athletico Mince, Off The Beat & Track with Stu Whiffen and Sappenin’ Podcast with Sean Smith to name a few.

What excites you about working on art for Gears of War?

I mean, I’ve played all the games since day 1. So, for me personally it’s an absolute honour to create visuals for the franchise. For that reason, I find it extremely exciting working with the team on new artwork.

Tell us about the Hydra poster – what’s going on inside it?

With previous pieces I’d created individual character Omens which was great but for this one I thought we could go for something that was more ‘scenic’ or ‘in scene’. Something that felt more dramatic and told a story. I wanted the Hydra to dominate the composition then below have the COG soldier atop a hill about to meet his end. Then at the bottom of page / in the foreground litter fallen soldiers, weapons, skulls and destruction. It was really fun putting this together! I’d say it’s probably my most ambitious piece of Gears artwork to date. It took several months to complete… I’m pleased with how it came out.

What’s been your favourite Gears project to work on?

Too many to name but if I had to choose it would probably be the Gears 5 Soundtrack which was released on vinyl through Laced Records. I got to not only do the art for the cover but design the entire package. The graphic designer in me loves taking my illustration and applying it to other things like packaging/box art. I’m very much into putting my stamp on brands and this was really satisfying to do. Very honoured to have my name alongside the Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi also. It just ticked every box for me creatively.

How long does a piece usually take to complete on average, and are you someone who works on multiple pieces at one time?

A piece can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on feedback from the client. Once my rough concepts are approved though I can probably complete the artwork in around 3 – 4 days. Saying that, it varies from project to project. Yes, I do work on multiple pieces at once. I find it helpful to come away from a piece and go back to it with fresh eyes.

Do you play games when you’re not drawing? What games have you been into recently?

I do! I’ve been playing the remastered version of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2, Doom Eternal and Star Wars Squadrons. I also picked up Destiny 2 again recently on Xbox Game Pass. I lost interest in the game for awhile but it’s been fun going back to it again. Lots more content to get my teeth into… And obviously, I play Gears! Although, I’m terrible at multiplayer.

Who do you idolize in the art world? Who would be a dream mentor?

I tend to idolize more musicians than I do artists if I’m honest. Mike Patton is up there… I just think everything that guy does creatively is genius. With regards to artists, Steve Dillon and Jim Phillips are absolute legends.

It’s been a hard year, how has quarantine / COVID-19 impacted your work?

Due to the nature of my work, I’ve been able to still work from home. Some jobs have fallen through here and there but that’s completely understandable… Everything is so up in the air at the moment. I am extremely grateful that I’m able to create and support my family through these tough times. Understandably, a lot of people are in much worse situations than me. I have a lot to be thankful for!

Finally, any advice to any aspiring artists out there?

Whether it’s art or music or whatever your passion is – just keep plugging away. Practice, practice, practice. Talk to people, seek advice. Don’t be afraid to fail because I did. LOTS! You’ve got to pick yourself back up and just keep going. Nothing happens overnight. Maybe, look to get your work in galleries as well… It’s great having an online presence too. Although, I sometimes think because of social media, we live in a world where people want that ‘quick success’ without any of the hard work that goes with it. I’ve been grafting for over 20 years and I’ve still got lots more things I want to do creatively. If you’re passionate about what you do then that’s the main thing. People will notice that passion and who know it might lead on to an exciting project. That’s what happened to me when the Gears team at Microsoft approached me… Also, try and find your own voice. Taking inspiration from others is fine but try and turn into your own thing. It’s an organic process of creating over a long period of time and if something comes out of that is unique to you then own it and make it yours. The possibilities are endless. Most importantly – HAVE FUN DOING IT!
