The first rule of creating an unforgettable horror game is that there are no rules. As a developer it’s all about going with your gut. This is a guiding principal at Striking Distance Studios. We sweat the small stuff to deliver hand crafted scares that blend atmosphere, tension, brutality, humanity, and helplessness. We call it “Horror Engineering.”
While you’ll find plenty of atmosphere and tension in the first trailer for The Callisto Protocol, we wanted to put the game’s brutality front and center in our reveal for Xbox gamers. The Callisto Protocol is a story based third-person sci-fi survival horror game set on Jupiter’s dead moon Callisto in the year 2230. Players take on the role of Jacob Lee, a prisoner in Black Iron Prison. Jacob must wage a brutal battle to survive when a mysterious outbreak throws the moon into chaos.
One of the first things that you’ll notice about The Callisto Protocol is the creatures. They’re called Biophage, and these things are grotesque. All of our creatures start out as humans who have undergone terrifying, flesh-tearing transformations and now roam the halls of Black Iron. And we want to put players up close and personal with these monstrosities. The Callisto Protocol’s combat system is a mix of close-quarters melee action, long range gunplay, and a unique gravity gun called the GRP (“Grip”) that lets players move seamlessly between the two.
The game’s melee system uses a stun baton that Jacob has scavenged from one of the prison’s guards. Previously used to suppress inmates, the baton can beat back Biophage as Jacob tries to prevent them from tearing him apart. Players can doge or block attacks using the left stick while looking for an opening to land a skull-splitting move on their opponents.
The game’s ranged combat will give players a selection of upgradeable weapons to take out Biophage from a distance. Skilled players can take off the creatures’ arms, legs, and even heads – but that’s no guarantee that this will stop the Biophage from attacking. And since ammo is scarce, players will need to be strategic with their shooting.
And finally, the GRP is a powerful weapon that lets players grab and throw objects in the environment, including enemies. Attacked by a mob of creatures? Players can grab Biophage with the GRP and throw them across the room to get some breathing room. Low on ammo? The GRP can grab enemies and pull them closer for a melee kill. The GRP gives players a strategic way to control the pace of the action.
And of course, for some particularly brutal fun, players can throw Biophage into environmental hazards like spinning industrial fans, spiked walls, and power generators. The grisly possibilities are endless.

A horrifying abomination emerges from the darkness. Its presence blackens the air, draining all hope. The Dredge and its thrilling new Power – Reign of Darkness – have come to Dead by Daylight, introducing a new layer of horror action to The Entity’s Realm.
The Dredge’s Reign of Darkness Power grants several special abilities, including The Gloaming. Use The Gloaming to teleport to any locker on the map, creating a Remnant (think of it like a spectral placeholder) in the process. With numerous lockers positioned in various places on any given map, this grants The Dredge serious mobility. Should you decide against teleporting, you can instead return to your Remnant and regain any lost ground.
Whether you’re looking to learn The Dredge or increase your chances of survival against it, we’ve got you covered with a few tips and tricks.
Three Tips for Playing as The Dredge
Teleport Techniques
While The Dredge’s teleportation is an effective means of traversing the map, it can also be used to great effect in a chase. If you see a Survivor running toward an extensive loop – a main building or the Killer’s Shack, for instance – it’s likely there will be a locker close by. Use your teleportation to make predictions, emerge from a locker, and cut them off.
As the Trial progresses and the generators dwindle, be careful not to spread yourself thin. Be mindful of how generators are spread around the map and try to pinpoint which ones are worth holding on to. It might be tempting to teleport across the map to protect a lone generator, but that cooldown can prove costly if Survivors take advantage of your absence – especially in the late-game.
Shut Down Loops
With a high skill ceiling, the Remnant aspect of The Dredge’s Power allows for plenty of exciting mind games. While a Survivor is attempting to lure you into a lengthy loop-heavy area, strategically create a Remnant at key chokepoints to effectively cut them off mid-chase.
Consider creating a Remnant near a pallet or window, as it is likely a Survivor will want to make use of that. Should Survivors seem intent on running around a structure multiple times, anticipate this and use your Remnant to close the distance. Just remember, Survivors can remove your Remnant through direct contact, so try to predict their movement.
The Gloaming
The Dredge is darkness manifested, so naturally, it thrives when the lights go out. When the Night Cycle begins, remember that Survivors will be far more disoriented than yourself. Know that you hold the advantage in chases, and areas that Survivors may have skilfully navigated beforehand might now give them trouble.
That’s not to say the Nightfall will guarantee a successful end to your chase – but it’s worth noting that Survivors will have their vision severely hindered. Is there any sweeter sight than a Survivor running into a wall?

The Dredge is an oppressive and disturbing Killer, one that can swiftly darken a Survivor’s day. Only the bravest stand a chance – and new Survivor Haddie Kaur is not lacking in that department.
Haunted by chilling visions since childhood, Haddie Kaur was driven to face the horror of realms beyond. Throughout her journeys to the world’s haunted corners – which she covered extensively on her podcast Ravages of the Abyss – shedeveloped several tools to help her deal with this terrifying new threat.
Should you find yourself facing The Dredge, whether as Haddie or any other Survivor, here are a few helpful tips to brighten up the darkness.
Manage The Nightfall
With all the excitement a trial brings, it can be easy to lose track of the HUD. When facing the Dredge, however, it helps to pay close attention to the meter surrounding your character icon. Knowing when the map will darken will keep you one step ahead. It might sound like a small suggestion but keeping a watchful eye on that HUD could be the difference between life and death, as certain areas can really spell trouble in the dark.
Watch for Signs
Should you find yourself pursued by The Dredge, you may opt to beeline for the closest loop, main building, or Killer’s Shack. If there is a locker nearby, The Dredge might teleport and emerge from it, cutting you off in the process. Keep an eye on its arm – if you see it rise, The Dredge is in the process of charging its power, so be on guard a teleportation play. It’s also wise to observe lockers for signs of its presence, as The Dredge leaves subtle visual and sound clues while inside of one.
Mind Those Locks
While The Dredge can teleport across the map, you can impede its process by placing a lock on a Locker door. Doing so will delay The Dredge’s exit, as it will take several seconds for the lock to be destroyed. It may be tempting to shore up the security at the beginning of a match, but remember that each Locker can only be locked once. If The Dredge smashes every lock by a trial’s halfway point, you may be facing a challenging endgame.

Prepare yourself to smash restart over and over again just so you can finally get killed by that one $&#$& tiny golden disc. Aaaand that’s when you realize the whole point: Disc Room is not about surviving, it’s about dying.
We want everyone to get killed at their own pace, so we decided to make the game as accessible as we could.
Disc Room looks like a hard game on the surface, but it’s filled with important details that make everyone’s desired difficulty levels easy to realize. Firstly, the design itself is all about quick intense runs, simple controls, clear objectives, and an imaginative sci-fi story that gets straight to the point. We don’t need you to survive for half an hour to feel immersed, ten seconds is enough – this death dependent game is about quality not quantity.
Secondly, Disc Room allows the player in-depth control over the settings and difficulty level, via a detailed accessibility menu. At any point in play, you can change the game speed (even on an individual level such as disc or hazard speed), you can also lower goal difficulty, and even unlock any room or the beautiful narrative comics at any point in time.
All of these settings are toggleable, so you can easily switch them on or off whenever you want. If you’re stuck on a particularly tough boss, just slow the game speed down to find your sweet spot, and once you beat it you can speed things back up. The power of accessibility is that it helps everyone, and can also be used to make the game even more challenging! Want to show a friend your superior reflexes? Quickly unlock the hardest level and prove yourself. Is the normal game and even hard mode too easy for you? Play at 200% speed and see how you feel about it then! We actually found game play speed flexibility so intriguing, that the game uses the bumpers as dedicated fast forward buttons, so you can always speed things up right to the hard bits!

Gather Your Bountiful Harvest
Reality Seed Pods are spreading from the Reality Tree — plant a Reality Seed to grow a Reality Sapling! These Saplings produce better loot each time you weed them, so keep weeding your sapling until it bears loot of the Mythic variety.
Have a sapling already planted? Throw a Reality Seed to teleport the sapling to where it lands! Have a green thumb? Check the map to see your sapling’s status, and when it’s ready to be picked. When your sapling eventually wilts away, it’ll leave behind a Reality Seed for you to plant.
The Baller Returns
The Baller is back! Roll around the Island, grapple onto surfaces, and get on the new (and definitely safe) Screwballer coaster for a high-flying experience.
The Baller’s been updated since its last appearance on the Island. It has more Health, can float on water, and runs on Battery charge. Try to find a new Baller before your current one’s out of juice!
Ride on the Wild Side
Ballers have made a long-awaited comeback, but how about a brand new way to get around? Mount wolves or boars to ride atop them in battle! You can even don your weapons while riding for some mounted combat.
Good Time Gear
Display your combat ability with brand new weapons! Hit hard with the Hammer Assault Rifle, (powerful at many ranges) deal a double-punch with the Two-Shot Shotgun, which launches a burst of two powerful shots, and go the distance with the Designated Marksman Rifle, a new weapon class altogether.

Storm Sickness won’t take you by surprise, as you’ll be notified if you’re getting close to getting it. The cure for Storm Sickness is simply exiting the Storm. When you’re cured of it, be careful not to let the Storm touch you because you’ll instantly be afflicted again if it catches you.

Visiting arcades as an ‘80s and ‘90s kid was so much fun. From 6-player beat ‘em ups to racing games, and every style in-between. Of course, my good friend Pac-Man was always there to quench my thirst for maze-running action. Arcades were, and still are, a place where you can discover something so incredibly fun and vividly designed that you won’t want to miss a pixel of the action. This is exactly what happened when I first discovered Pac-Mania in 1987.
My grandpa would sometimes take me to this arcade shaped like a castle and give me a few quarters so I could seek out Pac-Man or Super Pac-Man.
