Inside Xbox One X Enhanced: Hitman

Many of gaming’s most compelling stories come from those who’ve helped to create our favorite Xbox One games. In our Inside Xbox One X Enhanced series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of the work involved in enhancing these epic games for Xbox One X, how they’ve helped chart the course of the world’s most powerful console, and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with IO Interactive’s Jonas Meyer, Lead Programmer on the intense action game Hitman: Game of the Year Edition.

What specifically is your development team doing to enhance Hitman for Xbox One X?

For Hitman on Xbox One X, we provide two different modes: “High Framerate” or “High Quality”. With High Quality, you get True Native 4K rendering, targeted at 30fps and we’re using the additional GPU power to render Higher Quality shadows. “High Framerate” targets 60fps, at a slightly lower internal resolution – but still renders a 4k image. Both modes use the extra memory of the console to store more high-resolution textures in memory, and has increased texture filtering quality.

How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience?

Using “High Quality” gives you the highest quality image, something only available on PC previously. Using High framerate gives you a super smooth 60fps experience. Whichever mode players choose, I’m sure that they will notice the enhancements that we’ve worked on.

Why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas?

The extreme GPU power of the Xbox One X allows us to render much more at a much higher quality. For High framerate, it is something we’ve always wanted to do. 60fps games just feel a lot better. All locations in Hitman are extremely detailed and are created to immerse our players and the additional power that we could use on our Xbox One X version will show off the game world in an even better way.

How do you expect fans of Hitman will respond to seeing on Xbox One X with these enhancements?

I think people will love playing at the increased quality, and with the new content we have coming out, Xbox One X is definitely going to be the best place to play Hitman. Our lighting artists have recently done some great work on improving the existing locations and they look incredible in 4K and HDR. The skyboxes especially look really good.

How has the process been to get the game up and running on Xbox One X?

Getting everything up and running on Xbox One X was very easy. Increasing our render quality for the High Quality version was also easy, as we have assets from PC we can leverage. Hitting 60fps in High Framerate was quite challenging, but we managed to find a way to hit that 60 fps. Here’s how we did it: As the Hitman world simulation is very complicated, we were not able to optimize the simulation itself to run at 60fps, so instead we opted to double the number of rendered frames, and optimize the rendering instead. This means for every simulation tick, we render two frames, giving that smooth 60fps experience.

What enhancement were you most excited about to explore leveraging for Hitman on Xbox One X?

Definitely 60fps. Once the game is playing, its all about that smooth experience for me. One really nice thing is that both of the modes we support use supersampling, also when running on a 1080p screen, meaning that that even if users don’t have a 4K screen, they will still see the improved visuals.

What does 4K and HDR mean for your game, games in the future and development at your studio?

It means we can provide more pixels that look better. HDR is super interesting, as we’ll be able to continuously improve the quality of the pixels we send out.

Thanks to Jonas for taking the time to chat with us about Xbox One X Enhanced. We’ll be bringing you more interviews with more developers in the future, so stay tuned to Xbox Wire!

Rainbow Six Siege is stronger now than it’s ever been. After nearly two years of updates, tweaks, and expansions, its tactical attackers vs. defenders matches have been honed into a fast, focused experience that continues to grow and improve. Now is the perfect time to jump in, and this weekend you can play Rainbow Six Siege for free on Xbox One.

That means every map and every mode, as well as the ability to unlock and customize any of the game’s 34 Operators.

Your progress will be saved after the free weekend is over, so you can pick up where you left off if you decide to buy the full game later. But you can pick it up at a hefty discount during the trial period. Gold members can get the standard and Gold editions for 60% off from November 16 through November 20, and the Complete Edition, which comes with the eight Operators from Year 1 and the Year 2 Season Pass, unlocking all Operators that have been added post-launch, is available for up to 50% off.

The free weekend ends just before the debut of Operation White Noise, Season 4 of Rainbow Six Siege’s Year 2 content. Operation White Noise adds three new Operators, who will be unlocked at launch to Season Pass holders. Following the seven-day early access period for Season Pass holders, the content will be available to everyone to purchase using Renown or R6 Credits. The new map, a vertigo-inducing observation tower above Seoul’s skyline, will be free for all at launch.

Rainbow Six Siege‘s cat-and-mouse shootouts are a merciless test of skill, where communication, destruction, and team play are vital to success. If you’re ready to test your mettle, you can download Rainbow Six Siege from the Gold Member area on the Home dashboard when the trial period begins.

Get Your Hands on The Sims 4 Before Launch with EA Access

Hello, Simmers!

It’s an exciting time for us working on The Sims 4, as we prep for our official release on Xbox One this November 17. But starting today, we are especially excited to exclusively offer Xbox players a trial of the game before launch through EA Access. If you’re a member of EA Access, you can now enjoy up to 10 hours of The Sims 4.

The Sims 4 Screenshot

Now, we know some of you might be new to the world of The Sims, so we wanted to give you some fun things to try during your trial. And don’t fret — if you happened to get attached to your first sim during this trial period, you can carry over your saved progress when you purchase the game! Pretty cool, right?

Anyway, back to some tips!

#1 Spend Time in “Create A Sim”

We know some folks like to rush through a character creator because they really want to jump into the game, but the fun thing about The Sims 4 is that the you can write your own story. So, take a bit of time to customize their look, what they wear, as well as identifying their aspirations, personality traits, and more!

With The Sims 4, you can customize almost every aspect of your Sim, and the possibilities are endless. Now you can create yourself, a friend, or even bring characters from your imagination to life!

The Sims 4 Screenshot

#2 Check Out Build Mode

Moving your Sim into their first home is a big step, and you want to pick a neighborhood that fits their lifestyle. While it’s always tempting to try and go after the beautiful and luxurious-looking homes, sometimes it’s good to start your experience with a bit of a fixer upper. Try taking something in a lower Simolean range, as it provides a good opportunity to really test out the build mode features.

There are lots of great build features for you to check out when building the home of your dreams. Change the layout of a home by knocking down walls, erecting new ones, giving that kitchen a much-needed makeover, and even adding additional rooms onto the building to give your Sim that extra living space.

#3 Choose a Career

Your Sims aspire to live certain lifestyles, but just like real life they need to earn Simoleans to fuel that lifestyle. One of the ways they can do this is through choosing a career. Explore the stars through the astronaut career, become the next big artist through the painter career, or even live a double life through the secret agent career.

Luckily, there are plenty of options to choose from, so you can really tap into your skills and interests.

We hope that this list of suggestions can help you spend your EA Access Play First Trial time to the fullest. There are so many different stories you can tell through The Sims 4 and we cannot wait to see what you create.

Inside Xbox One X Enhanced: Madden NFL 18

Many of gaming’s most compelling stories come from those who’ve helped to create our favorite Xbox One games. In our Inside Xbox One X Enhanced series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of the work involved in enhancing these epic games for Xbox One X, how they’ve helped chart the course of the world’s most powerful console, and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with Seth Christie from EA Sports, Technical Director on the perennial football powerhouse Madden 18.

What specifically is your development team doing to enhance Madden NFL 18 for Xbox One X?

For Madden NFL 18, we are reaching new heights on Xbox One X through visuals and gameplay. The resolution of the game can be played in 4K Ultra HD, which really comes through in the player detail.  The gameplay will run at a constant 60 FPS (Frames Per Second), which means that when you go from scoring on the field to celebrating in the end zone, you’ll experience a smooth, seamless transition from gameplay to cinematic moments.

How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience?

As mentioned above, the visuals are improved due to 4K Ultra HD support and the performance is improved due to constant 60 FPS across the gameplay experience. When you combine 4K Ultra HD, constant 60 fps with additional enhancements such as an increased level of camera detail, you’ll immediately notice and feel a difference in the immersion. This means that elements such as the player’s helmet and faces become more realistic –giving you the feeling that you are right there in the stadium.

Why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas?

We wanted to give our fans the highest fidelity Madden NFL 18 visual experience, and we knew these were the key areas which would deliver the most noticeable upgrades.

Xbox One X Enhanced Madden inline

How do you expect fans of Madden NFL 18 will respond to seeing on Xbox One X with these enhancements?

There are still times when we do a double-take after casually seeing Madden NFL 18 on Xbox One X. The console has made the experience even more like the real-life broadcasts you seen on TV. We expect our fans will react similarly.

How has the process been to get the game up and running on Xbox One X?

The team at Microsoft planned their console transition well, and the we found it easy to upgrade Madden NFL 18 to take advantage of the power of the console.

What enhancement were you most excited about to explore leveraging for Madden 18 on Xbox One X?

The powerful GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) in the Xbox One X has allowed a jump in fidelity already, and we are sure there is still room to improve the experience in the coming years.

What does 4K and HDR mean for your game, games in the future and development at your studio?

We are now able to deliver vibrant, detailed visuals only previously imagined by our team. Our games will continue taking advantage of these technologies to deliver realistic experiences into our fans’ living rooms.

Thanks to Seth for taking the time to chat with us about Xbox One X Enhanced. We’ll be bringing you more interviews with more developers in the future, so stay tuned to Xbox Wire!

Experience HDR and 4K with the Insects Demo Experience on Xbox One X

When you pick up your Xbox One X on November 7, you’ll experience many of the latest cutting-edge technology features that will be focused in gaming for years to come like 4K Ultra HD, High Dynamic Range, or HDR as it’s better known, as well as Spatial Audio. To help showcase these new features to you, even if you may not have the 4K display to run, we developed an interactive demo known as “Insects.”

Originally developed by the Xbox Advanced Technology Group for game developers, “Insects” was designed to help teams easily see and hear just how the dramatic the differences can be between the various technologies.

Over time, the team realized how fun and effective the experience was, and so we’re making it publicly available the same day that Xbox One X launches, on November 7 to be viewed on your console. “Insects” will be available to download from the Microsoft Store on your console.

If you don’t have an Xbox One X to experience this interactive demo, we have included a variety of screenshots here that showcase all the elements of the video to give you a sense of what features like HDR and 4K bring to your games.

On Xbox One X, the beauty of “Insects” is the option to toggle between the various formats. Once you’ve completed the initial Guided Tour, you can, at any time, turn 4K on or off, as well as HDR and Spatial Audio. You can also pause the experience and zoom in on various elements.

Better yet, you can even change the time of day and alter the colors of the ladybug and flowers, all while toggling 4K, HDR, and Spatial Audio on or off to your heart’s delight. Also, if you download Insects on an Xbox One X and display it on a 1080p display, switching 4K mode on and off will showcase super-sampling in all its beauty.

If you really want to dig into the details, you can even use Pixel Highlighting to show you what areas of the scene are being affected by HDR or Wide Color Gamut. We think you’ll find it remarkable to see the detail pop into focus when you turn 4K back on, or see the range of detail and color when you do the same with HDR. Our personal favorite is switching HDR on and off at night and looking at the moon. It’s such a simple, but great illustration of the technology.

We hope you enjoy the “Insects” demo experience on Xbox One X and we can’t wait for you to feel true power when the world’s most powerful console launches on November 7.
