What’s This? Learn More About Pseudo-Loc in Preview

Hello, Xbox Insiders! If you’ve been a member of the Xbox One System Update Preview for a month or three years, you may be wondering “What’s with the funny text I sometimes see in places?” Well, have I got some news for you folks: you aren’t alone. One of the more commonly reported issues from users we receive during a Preview update is related to this very issue. Why is this text funny you may ask? I’m glad you did, and I’ll be happy to elaborate on what it is you are seeing.

You see, while we are in Preview the update isn’t actually “ready” to go out to everyone in the Xbox One community, and that means that a lot of what you are seeing isn’t quite finished. From features we let you try out, all the way down to the text you read on the console itself that looks like this:

Pseudo Loc

What you’re looking at is what is commonly known as “pseudo-loc” or text that has yet to be localized for the specific language/region you have your console set to display. The closer we get to a particular update being released to the public, the less of this you should see, but we definitely need your help whenever you encounter this type of text in order to ensure it gets localized for your language/region.

For those of you that report this already, thanks so much for taking the time to let us know, and for those of you asking yourself “How can I help?”  you’re in luck.  If you encounter any kind of pseudo-loc while using the console, just be sure to use the “Report a problem” feature to submit the issue directly on the console. When submitting the issue, be sure to put in your description of exactly where you are encountering the non-localized text.

We’re looking forward to seeing your feedback on this and appreciate all of your contributions and passion for Xbox. Thank you!

-Jon

Games: “Report a problem” like a Rockstar

Hello, Xbox Insiders! Today we want to talk about two of the most important elements of the Xbox Insider Program: games and your feedback. You, as Xbox Insiders, help make this program and the games in it a huge success, so firstly, thank you for all you do. Secondly, we frequently receive sentiment from you asking if we are listening, and wondering if the feedback you report is looked at or even matters.

The answer is yes: we are listening, it does get looked at, and it absolutely matters. The problem is we often receive feedback missing important information that would allow us to better take action. We’re going to give you a few simple tips for reporting game problems, so you’ll be sure the reports you spend valuable time filling out can lead to action on our end.

1. Feedback and problems (bugs) are different.

We love all your feedback! However, “Report a problem” should be used for the purpose of just that, reporting a problem. You are welcome to include a suggestion with your bug report; however, the main purpose should be to tell us in detail that there’s a problem. Please provide general feedback and ideas through Xbox Insider Hub Quests, Surveys, game-specific forums, and xbox.uservoice.com.

2. The smallest details make the biggest difference.

As little as a few extra words can mean the world to us. We aren’t sitting in your living room, so unless you tell us specifically, there’s no way for us to know exactly what you experienced. Some of the most important and easiest details to include are:

  • Which game mode you were playing (campaign, multiplayer, 5v5, etc.)
  • Crashes: If the game crashed when you tried to launch it (failed to launch) or crashed while you were playing or in a menu
  • Tell us what “it” is that isn’t working correctly in the game: a particular game mode, character, skill, weapon, item you are supposed to interact with, vehicle, door, mount, anything

3. Help us take a walk in your footsteps.

Games these days are so enormous. We need you to leave us some breadcrumbs that will lead us home. Walk us through your experience step by step, so we can identify the root of the problem by reproducing it ourselves.

4. Bonus: How often does this happen?

Sometimes, you run into the same problem over and over. Sometimes, it only happens once, then never again. If you can tell us how many times you’ve run into the problem, it will be a great help!

Help us help you. We want the games we all play to be as epic and flawless as possible, and as mentioned before, your contributions are a huge help in making that happen. We hope you agree that spending an extra minute entering details that will help us nail down your problem and squash that bug is worth it. That extra minute could be a game changer. Keep that feedback coming!

This update also includes fixes to Kinect setup and Network Transfer. Read on to learn more about this update, which will be made available starting at 6 p.m. PT to all Alpha Insiders.

New Features:

  • We have enabled a new feature to show an “Xbox Game Pass” tab within “My games & apps” for users on Preview Alpha with an active Game Pass subscription. If someone has an active Game Pass subscription, they will see this tab appear in “My games & apps” and will be able to quickly install available games from Game Pass. It works just like “Ready to install” but for Game Pass. For users in Preview Alpha who do not have Game Pass, they will see the updated left navigation—section dividers added and Memberships tab has moved.

Fixes:

System Setup – Kinect

  • When configuring a Kinect during the initial console set-up experience, the process no longer fails when attempting to tune audio.

Network Transfer

  • You may notice strange characters which replace normal translated text on the dashboard, Guide, and other areas. Please use Report a problem when you encounter these issues.

Games Installation

  • Games that are installed fail to launch. Workaround: If the games are installed to an external drive please copy the game to the internal drive or attempt to delete the title and redownload to fix the launch error.

Display

  • The left and right navigation for selecting date and time during Tournament creation is currently reversed when the console language is set to Arabic or Hebrew.
  • Left and right navigation in Tournament twists is reversed when the console language is set to Arabic or Hebrew.

Xbox Insider Community Spotlight: The Wee Bear

Welcome to our first Xbox Insider Community Spotlight! Here we feature prominent Xbox Insiders from the Xbox Insider Community.

This month we’re delighted to introduce The Wee Bear, who holds the title of current Xbox Insider XP champion! We reached out to The Wee Bear who was kind enough to answer a few questions about himself and his experiences in the Xbox Insider Program.

Xbox Insider Community Spotlight: The Wee Bear

Greetings The Wee Bear! Thanks for taking time to chat with us! First question, how long have you been an Xbox Insider, and what Xbox One Update Preview ring are you part of?

The Wee Bear: Thank you so much for featuring me, it’s really flattering that someone thought of me! I’m part of Preview Alpha and I’ve been an Xbox Insider for 3 years 10 months, since the very beginning. I’m currently Level 42 with 6,445 XP.

Wow that’s awesome! And where are you from, if you don’t mind us asking?

The Wee Bear: I’m from Scotland, UK.

And what do you do for a living?

The Wee Bear: I work for a charity that teaches British sign language. I do a bit of everything from maintaining websites to helping successful students receive their well earned certificates.

That sounds like very rewarding work. So, what are some of your favorite games on Xbox?

The Wee Bear: Pretty much every Lego game you can think of, I love them all! I’m also a big fan of Assassin’s Creed and the Forza Horizon series.

Are there any achievements you’ve earned that you’re particularly proud of?

The Wee Bear: I earned one recently in the The Lego Ninjago Movie Video Game called Master of Speed. You had to complete all the races in the game and the last race was super tough. I must have tried it a billion times! But, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Eventually I got it, phew!

Nice! You’ve got quite the history as an Xbox Insider, but what do you like most about the Xbox Insider Program?

The Wee Bear: I love trying out new features (of course), but I also enjoy spending time finding bugs and figuring out what’s not working right. However, I think the most rewarding thing is all the friends I’ve met as an Xbox Insider. Personally I think it’s very gratifying to get thanked for helping out fellow Xbox Insiders, and I get lots of nice messages too.

The two questions I get asked all the time are “Do you work for Microsoft?” (No!) and “How do you have so much XP?” (That’s just down to time in the Xbox Insider Program). Many people don’t realize the Xbox Insider Program has been going on for almost 4 years now!
