New Preview Alpha 1806 System Update – 5/22/18

Starting at 6:00 p.m. PDT today, members of the Xbox One Preview Alpha Ring will begin receiving the latest Xbox One system update (1806.180517-2122). Read on for more about the New Features,  fixes and known issues in the latest 1806 system update.

New Features:

While anticipation for E3 continues to build for a fantastic lineup of new games for Xbox players, we’re sharing some great new features in development that will begin to roll out to Xbox Insiders today.  Not all of these features will be available immediately, but will be added over time in system update 1806 (June Update).  The team at Xbox is always striving to improve the platform, and these features developed from fan feedback will continue to be shaped by Insider previewers.  Enjoy these new features and giving your valuable feedback as we count down the days to the Xbox E3 briefing on June 10th!

Group Your Games and Apps

With so much content available, fans have asked for more options to organize libraries of games and apps.  Today, we’re introducing a powerful new enhancement to Pins, which we call “Groups.” With Groups, you can create multiple collections of content made up of anything from within My Games & Apps. You can also assign custom names to each Group, organize and order them, and add individual Groups to Home. Groups will appear across My Games & Apps, Home and Guide, so you’ll be able to access your Groups at a moment’s notice. Best of all, Groups are tied to your Xbox Live account, so they will automatically sync across multiple Xbox One consoles. We’ve started you off with a Group that should look very familiar — your Pins!

Improved Search Functionality

Searching for content is now even easier!  Now pressing the Y button anywhere in the dashboard will bring up the search dialog.  This process is found in many apps, but now you can do it anywhere within the dashboard.  Not seeing enough results for your search? Hit enter or click the “more results” button to view a full page for your search results.

Multiple Wi-Fi passwords

The team at Xbox wants to enable gamers to hop online and play with ease.  This feature enables users to store multiple Wi-Fi passwords on their console.  This will make jumping between networks even easier and give you even more reasons to pack your Xbox on your next vacation!

Additional Accessibility Options

The Narrator feature on Xbox One now supports five additional languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, and Dutch. We’re also adding an Australian version of English language for Narrator, so Australian users will no longer have to select US or UK English in order to use Narrator.

Improvements to Family Settings

New features will allow for the right experience for child accounts.

Experiments

A subset of Xbox Insiders may see some experimental features in addition to what’s listed above.  These are designed to gauge interest and solicit feedback from a more focused group.  For example, some users will be able to share game-specific stats amongst your friends right on your home page.  While others may find greater functionality within Clubs.

As always, thanks to all the Xbox Insiders for your feedback.  Your insight and input is both critical and crucial to making a better Xbox experience for gamers around the world.

New Feature Feedback:

Updates for Groups based on Xbox Insider feedback:

  • Guide now locked to 4 columns
  • Guide now opens multiple groups in flyout
  • The “Add more” and “Create a group” flows now also includes your “Ready to install” games
  • The “Add more” and “Create a group” flows now allow you to add up to 40 items to a Group at one time
  • If you are looking for Groups in Guide but expected to see a Pins button, click on the “My games & apps” button – we’ve combined Groups with “My games & apps” to put all your stuff in one convenient location for quick access
  • Resetting Groups: We’ve updated the reset button so now you can delete your local Groups and re-sync with the service. This will clear up a lot of issues that may have occurred due to bad states or if data is not showing up as expected. You may need to sign in / out for the pages to refresh. You can still delete from everywhere if you want a fresh start with Groups.

Fixes:

GameDVR

  • Fixed the issue in which some users did not receive pop up notifications for Game DVR captures and the guide did not update the number of new captures.

Groups

  • Fixed an issue where using Groups on multiple consoles would cause blank names on that other console. This should not repro anymore and can be fixed by choosing to reset your Groups locally
  • Fixed an issue where Groups in a bad state would be reset because of unexpected data
  • Fixed an issue regarding scrolling and poor navigation in Groups lower down in Guide
  • Fixed an issue when editing Groups on multiple consoles that would cause random ordering of your Groups

Microsoft Edge

  • Fixed an issue in which switching Microsoft Edge tabs will cause PDF files to disappear from the screen.
  • Stability and performance fixes for Microsoft Edge, specifically when multiple tabs are open.

 System Performance

  • Misc. performance fixes in the platform.

Known Issues:

Groups

  • Preview Alpha users thanks for your feedback on Groups we are not expanding the feature to more users in Alpha today based on the feedback. Stay tuned for more information on expansion later this week and thanks for flighting and the great feedback!
  • The Groups tab My games & apps may not show after sign in even though you can access Groups in Guide. Workaround: Sign in / out to refresh these pages.
  • You may see “This group does not exist” on Home on first sign-in for your existing Groups. Workaround: Sign in / out to refresh these pages.
  • Some changes might not be reflected when editing Groups between multiple consoles after coming out of connected standby.  Sign in/out to fix.
  • The “Add more” or “Create a group” page for Groups will not show all installed content when filtering
  • Titles hidden from Ready to install will show up as an item you can add through the “Add more” or “Create a group” page
  • Choosing “Add to Home” for game/app within a group will not add the block to Home
  • You may see issues roaming between a GA console and preview 1806 console. Workaround: Choose to reset your Groups locally to resync from the service.

Pi-hole

  • Pi-hole users may encounter issues signing in, creating, or recovering accounts upon downloading the 1804 update. This is due to a new configuration file which is downloaded from a URL Pi-hole blocks by default.
  • Workaround: Add clientconfig.passport.net to the Pi-hole allowed IP address list.

Profile Color

  • Sometimes users may encounter an incorrect Profile color when powering on the console.

Networking

  • Work continues on the stability of the Wi-Fi connectivity.  If you see any issues please report the problems for investigation.

YouTube

  • Some users are encountering an issue where their YouTube account is being signed out whenever they launch the app.
    • Workaround: Uninstall/re-install the app and sign in with your account again.

Five Game-Changing Features Coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

It might be one of the most popular video game franchises in the world, but Call of Duty isn’t scared to take some risks.

At a community reveal event in Los Angeles, Activision and developer Treyarch gave gamers their first good look at Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The explosive shooter is going bigger than ever, capturing the zeitgeist with a battle royale mode and eschewing a traditional single-player campaign in favor of a narrative-driven approach to multiplayer.

Here are the five biggest features coming to Black Ops 4.

1. Blackout mode gives fans the royale treatment.

Games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite have ushered in the era of the battle royale. Black Ops 4 hopes to move the trendy genre into the future with the new Blackout mode.

Blackout will let players drop onto a huge map – we’re talking 1,500 times the size of iconic Black Ops map “Nuketown” – and battle it out to be the last person standing. Featuring playable characters from classic Black Ops games, fan-favorite maps, land, sea, and air vehicles, and all the weapons, gadgets and gear you’d expect from a full-fledged Call of Duty experience, Blackout should be a formidable – and fun – new entry in the burgeoning battle royale space.

2. Boots are back on the ground.

Having pushed the sci-fi envelope in Black Ops III and Advanced Warfare, Call of Duty returns to the boots-on-the-ground action that the franchise is famous for. Forget flitting around with jump jets and wallruns – the combat in Black Ops 4 is grittier, more tactical, and decidedly less fantastical. Players can no longer rely on rocket-powered boosts to zip away from danger. In Black Ops 4, the smart, strategic player will succeed.

Black Ops 4 will also reward dedicated players with the introduction of a new “predictive recoil” feature. Each weapon has a distinct recoil pattern; use a gun long enough and you can master its spread for maximum accuracy and damage. This move away from randomized bullet patterns will undoubtedly please hardcore and competitive players anxious to up their game and hone their skills.

3. Specialists are the stars of the show.

Specialists return in Black Ops 4, and they’re the lynchpin of multiplayer. Eight different specialist classes were on display during the reveal event, each with unique equipment and abilities. Taken together, the Specialists bring a hero shooter mentality to Black Ops 4.

Ruin, for instance, wields a Grapple Gun to quickly cover ground or reach higher elevation. He can also trigger a lethal area-of-effect Grav Slam to wipe out enemies huddled together. Firebreak totes a flamethrower and can emit a radiation field to damage nearby enemies. Seraph creates spawn points with her deployable beacon, Recon shoots a sensor dart that reveals enemy positions, and Torque can slow down enemies with a deployable barricade.

Perfecting the interplay between these powers will be crucial to team success in Black Ops 4 multiplayer, but the Specialists also offer a window into the game’s overarching narrative by way of story-driven solo missions and trials.

4. Take control of your health.

If you haven’t got your health, you haven’t got anything. In Black Ops 4, players begin a match with more health than ever before: 150 instead of the 100 found in every prior Call of Duty. That means you can take more punishment before going down, theoretically extending skirmishes by giving players a slightly better chance to escape from danger.

The flipside? Health is no longer restored automatically. Instead, players will have to manage their own health with a new Heal button. Press the left bumper and you’ll inject yourself with a stim pack to regain health, but this potent ability is on cooldown. Should you stay in the fight while trying to heal, or briefly take cover and risk losing a sure kill or two? Remembering to heal – and learning how to use this feature most effectively – will separate the haves from the headshot.

5. Three Zombies for the price of one.

It wouldn’t be Black Ops without a few thousand undead corpses to blast back to the grave, but Black Ops 4 isn’t content with one measly Zombies mode. To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Zombies, three distinct maps will be included in the Black Ops 4 package on Day One – and these aren’t your father’s boring old shamblers.

‘Voyage of Despair’ tasks its four sturdy characters with surviving a zombie outbreak on the Titanic; ‘IX’ outfits our crew with swords and shields and before tossing them into a Roman gladiator arena; and ‘Blood of the Dead’ revisits the legendary Mob of the Dead prison level from Black Ops II. With deep customization options, multiple difficulty levels, and an in-game tutorial for newbies, it’s shaping up to be the brainiest Zombies experience to date.

We’ll doubtlessly learn more about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s many modes, features, and innovations in the coming months. It’s due out for Xbox One on October 12.

Boss 101 Available Now on Xbox One

An event four years in the making has finally arrived and we are unbelievably happy to bring Boss 101 to Xbox One. When we started Boss 101 our goal was to make a game about two friends going on an epic adventure. One of the first additions was the Make-A-Boss generator where you create your own enemies to fight. From there it wasn’t long till we had tons of weapons, player upgrades, a campaign and millions of boss combinations for you to battle.

Boss 101 Screenshot

We didn’t stop there and worked hard to bring it together with a story both compelling and interesting. The Command Center (your main base) was turned into a home for not just you but your friends, Berl, Rob, and the Professor. We added visitors from other planets and a galactic Wiki so you can learn about your allies and enemies. Heck, we even added in pet friends, arcade games and kite flying to round out your day.

Boss 101 Screenshot

A lot of time went into making what we called ‘connective tissue’ for the game and story. That’s all the little touches that might not seem obvious or necessary at first but in the end, expand your experience as a player. An example would be the galactic Wiki. At first, we put it in to explain game lore but it quickly grew into something a more. We added in animated icons, bonus material and designed it to feel like part of the Command Center instead of a text dump screen. Take that thinking and multiply it a few hundred times and you get Boss 101. Where we are now is not the place we imagined when we started, it’s bigger and better. The world feels like a place. The characters feel like people we know.

Boss 101 Screenshot

The two main questions we asked over and over were “Is this fun?” and “Does it feel like it belongs in our universe?” All the rooms, ships, guns and equipment had to feel like they were built by the people you see in the game. Though the player might not see or hear every little secret there are reasons for everything. Reasons for Boss 101 and his mission, for you and your mission. All of it is sprinkled through the main campaign and across the Command Center. You don’t need to know it all to enjoy the game but if you dig around you can find everything.

Boss 101 Screenshot

Boss 101 represents a universe we want to come back to and tell more stories in. We hope you check it out and feel the same. Our team is three people, living our dreams and bringing you the best games we can.

For news about Boss 101 and its universe please visit the official Boss 101 site, follow us on Twitter or Facebook and stay tuned to Xbox Wire!

Toying with Disney Magic in the Big, Beautiful Kingdom Hearts III

Grab your keyblade, wake up Goofy, and prepare to smack a Heartless with a rollercoaster: Kingdom Hearts III is almost here.

Kingdom Hearts III will be the first franchise entry to appear on an Xbox platform, and it’s clear that this is a game for both new and old fans alike. With evolved gameplay punctuated by exhilarating attacks modeled after Disney attractions and characters, Kingdom Hearts III is shaping up to be an action-packed ride for everyone.

Action was exactly what we found during a recent hands-on demo touching on two of Kingdom Hearts III’s many worlds: the craggy mountains of Olympus from the 1997 “Hercules” film and a trip to Andy’s Toybox from Pixar’s “Toy Story”.

Built to show off the game’s verticality, Olympus charged us with taking down a massive Rock Titan. Dashing up the sheer mountain face while dodging huge boulders hefted by the mighty Titan, we were immediately struck by the game’s newfound sense of scale. Once they reached the summit, Sora and his trusty sidekicks Donald Duck and Goofy were face to, well, foot with the monstrous Titan.

After climbing up to the beast’s twin heads, we had access to one of the brand new “Attraction” ultimates inspired by real-world Disney theme park rides. In this case, it was “Big Magic Mountain,” a glittering, technicolor train yanked right out of the Main Street Electrical Parade. Sora and crew hopped aboard and blasted the Titan with colorful fireworks before exploding in a breathtaking, fight-ending light show.

Kingdom Hearts III Screenshot

The second half of the demo was just as magical. Warped into the not-so-small world of “Toy Story” – the first time a Pixar property has appeared in Kingdom Hearts – Sora and crew promptly meet up with Woody, Buzz, Rex, Hamm and other famous Toy Story faces. Watching Sora and Woody casually chat while wandering around Andy’s room is exactly the sort of thing that sets Kingdom Hearts fans’ hearts aflutter, a seemingly incongruous character mashup that somehow makes perfect sense.

Off we went to rescue Woody’s pals from Galaxy Toys, a brand new “Toy Story” location introduced in Kingdom Hearts III, but not before a few more Heartless battles demonstrated the game’s flexible combat system. Hammering on the attack button yielded combos that powered potent keyblade transformations. Players will wield several different keyblades over the course of the game and can switch between them at the press of a button. After dispatching a few grunts, we transformed the keyblade into the Tangled-inspired Mirage Staff, clearing out the rest with fierce, flowery blasts of light.

A Link attack brought forth the muscular star of “Wreck-it-Ralph”, who laid down a handful of explosive bricks before tackling enemies like a linebacker. Later we turned the world into water as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid”, diving beneath enemies and flipping them into the air. Another attraction, the Mad Teacups, turned the stomach-churning ride into a destructive, nauseating whirlwind. We even channeled “Pacific Rim” by controlling three giant toy mechs at various spots in the toy store.

Combine all of that with more keyblade modes (at one point we wielded a “Toy Story”-inspired hammer that would make Thor jealous), a wealth of magical attacks, and handy defensive dashes and you get a cinematic, laugh-out-loud system so grandiose, even Maleficent would love it, though she may frown at Kingdom Hearts III’s unbelievable looks.

Speedy and smooth with picture-perfect character models and bright, cheery colors, it’s a visual stunner. From the stiches on Woody’s pants to Goofy’s iconic gait, Kingdom Hearts III evokes the mouse house’s inimitable style and attention to detail. It feels like you’re playing through a bizarre Disney film.

Precisely when you’ll get to do that remains to be seen, as Square-Enix has yet to reveal a specific release date. But like the best rides, this big, bold, and beautiful romp through Disney’s unforgettable worlds looks like it will be well worth the wait when it arrives on Xbox One.

Introducing Xbox Ideas, Driven by You

Hello Insiders! Those of you who have been following the blog for the last few months will recognize me from previous posts about Xbox Feedback, our site dedicated to using your suggestions to direct new features and updates based on your ideas.

Today I’m here to announce that Xbox Feedback is improving and moving: Xbox Feedback is now Xbox Ideas! If you’ve already been to the new Xbox Ideas site, you might notice that the site feels familiar. We’re continuing to use the UserVoice platform to collect your ideas, but—in order to maximize the impact of your suggestions—we are changing how you submit your ideas by introducing the concept of Idea Drives.

An Idea Drive is a campaign that runs for a limited time (usually 1-3 months). Each Idea Drive will focus on a specific feature area or topic, sometimes with a limited number of ideas.

Phases of an Idea Drive

Idea Drive Phases

For most Idea Drives, there will be a Collection Phase where users can submit their own ideas about the feature.  For example, there is currently an Idea Drive for the Xbox Insider Program that is in the Collection Phase. The Idea Drive started with some ideas from Xbox Insider team members, but every day we’re adding more Ideas submitted by users.

Keep in mind that we very carefully moderate the list of ideas, and we will make edits for clarification on any ideas we accept. If you submit an idea that is a duplicate of an idea already posted, or if you submit an idea that is unrelated, it will not be posted to the Idea Drive.

Every Idea Drive will have a Voting Phase, submissions for new ideas are closed, and users are then encouraged to vote and comment. Our feature teams love these comments and read all of them, so comment away!

Finally, when voting ends, the Idea Drive will be closed but still visible on Xbox Ideas. During this time, our feature teams review the results of the drive. After the review, Idea Drive results will be posted on the Xbox Insider blog.

The last feature on the site is the Idea Drive Suggestion Box. This is your opportunity to pitch an Idea Drive of your own. If there’s an area of Xbox that you want to help improve, please suggest the Idea Drive here. Just like the Idea Drive forums, this area is highly curated, and specific idea requests or unrelated posts will be removed, so please focus on suggesting general Idea Drives. If we pick your Idea Drive then you can post your Idea. One tip: including comments with your specific ideas is an effective way to get others excited for the Idea Drive and vote for it.

We’ve posted a list of frequently asked questions about Xbox Ideas over on the site, which you can find right here.  We’re looking forward to sharing our next big announcement as well as the results of our first Idea Drives, so keep an eye on this space!

Head over to the new Xbox Ideas site, powered by UserVoice, and make your voice heard.  Remember, Xbox Ideas is driven by you!

Treasure Hunt Simulator is Now Available for Roblox on Xbox One

There’s something strangely alluring about being here under the shade of these wind-swept palm trees, laying on a mountain of sand warmed by a day’s worth of sun. Is it the soothing ocean breeze? The calming waves? Or maybe it’s the massive pile of treasure chests waiting to be found beneath your feet. Believe me, once you play Treasure Hunt Simulator you’ll know what I mean. Today we’re excited to announce that HenryDev’s breakout hit is now available for Roblox on Xbox One!

Dedicated players will have a lot to look forward to as they relentlessly dig their way through the sand in search of valuable loot. As you forge a path, you’ll earn cash by collecting and selling the sand you dig up and finding treasure chests scattered underground. The deeper you go, the better treasures you’ll find and the better equipment you’ll be able to purchase! You may only start the game with a mere bucket, but after a few hours, you’ll soon find yourself armed with a metal detector or bigger shovels. There are even upgrades like dynamite and C4 for the more aggressive explorers out there.

Roblox Treasure Hunt Screenshot

HenryDev tells us he got inspired to start developing on Roblox back in 2008 after he realized he could build and code his own games on the platform. He came up with the idea for Treasure Hunt Simulator after he saw the recent explosion of simulator games on Roblox and thought he could fill a niche that the genre was missing. Amazingly, he was able to create the game all by himself in just one month by leveraging components from the hundred or so other experiences he made previously.

“I had always wanted to create my own games, but I never knew how to start,” he said. “Roblox offered an easy-to-use tool where I could express myself in the form of a game. My first few creations were pretty rough and it took a while before I had any success, however, my creativity and competitiveness are what kept me hooked on Roblox.”

Roblox Treasure Hunt Screenshot

Since its debut on January 20, 2018, the game rocketed to the front page and has already been played hundreds of millions of times across desktops and mobile. For its Xbox One release, HenryDev added some unique enhancements including a simple controls menu, controller support, and icons for tools.

“The most rewarding part about Roblox is definitely having fans that play your game and tell you that they enjoy what you created,” he said. “Being a very competitive person, seeing so many people enjoy my game is really cool and one of my favorite features of this platform.”

Roblox Treasure Hunt Screenshot

When asked if he had anything to say to fans of Treasure Hunt Simulator or to the Xbox community on Roblox, he said, “I would love to thank my fans for all of the support on my game, as well as on Twitter! You guys are amazing! Members of the Xbox community who have never played the game, I suggest you give it a try. Be sure to watch for new updates coming soon to Treasure Hunt Simulator!”

You can follow HenryDev on Twitter @HenryTheDev. Want to learn more about Treasure Hunt Simulator? Check out our recent blog post here. Dig into an all-new Roblox adventure and play Treasure Hunt Simulator on Xbox One now!

In this build Gamers with monitors and televisions that support a 120Hz refresh rate can now turn on 120Hz support for 1080p and 1440p output resolutions on Xbox One S and Xbox One X. This high refresh rate option means you can now take full advantage of displays with 120Hz capabilities. High refresh rate support can provide a smoother gaming experience and lower latency on some displays, and games may benefit from reduced tearing and stuttering via 120Hz output.

Connect with Gamers Across Xbox Live and Discord

You can now easily link your Xbox Live account to your Discord account from a Discord app (PC, mobile) and from the “linked social accounts” Setting menu on Xbox One. When you link Discord to your Xbox Live account, your Xbox Live presence will be shared across Discord, enabling friends and users in your same Discord servers to see what you are playing on Xbox Live. Keep in mind that your Presence will be shared with anyone on Discord, independently of your Privacy Settings on Xbox.

Please note for this feature to work you to do the following on an Android or iOS device.  Currently the Beta version of the Discord app on Android and iOS supports the account linking (the PC app in coming soon from the Discord team):

What you need to do on the console:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Linked social accounts
  2. Select “Link” under Discord
  3. Follow the instruction in your screen to start the account linking process:
  4. Say ‘yes’ to the MSA consent dialog, allowing Xbox to share your information with Discord
  5. A 6 digit PIN code will show up in your console
  6. Go to your Discord app and insert the 6 digit code that shows up in your screen
  7. Accounts should now be linked and your Xbox presence will start being displayed in Discord
  8. If you say ‘no’ to the consent you’ll go back to settings, account won’t be linked

Improvements to the Xbox Accessories App

In this build we’re also modernizing the Xbox Accessories app to make it easier to navigate, and to look and feel more consistent with the rest of the Xbox One dashboard.

More Privacy Options

You will notice a change to the Login flow on the console that only occurs once when you first login.  In the privacy settings menu, you can now also specify whether to send crash dump data for games and apps to Microsoft. We’ll also let you know about scenarios where we need to share your data with game developers, publishers, and other third parties so that you can play online. Finally, we’re giving you a way to close your Microsoft account, which will also remove you from others’ friends lists.

Trim Clips Directly in the Guide

Last month, we added a new sharing feature that helps gamers upload their captured screenshots and videos directly to Twitter. In this build, we’re improving on the sharing experience even further; you can now trim your recent game captures directly from the Guide, so you won’t need to switch to Upload Studio to make a quick cut to your saved clips.
