Moonlighter Key Art

Moonlighter Key Art

Embark on an Adventure in Moonlighter, Available Now on Xbox One
Moonlighter is the story of Will, a humble shopkeeper that dreams of being a hero, just like the customer visiting his shops. For us this was always a story very close to our hearts since, as game developers, we started working for other people. We developed games that were not based on our own ideas but, secretly, we always dreamt of developing our own worlds, telling our own stories. Just like Will, we dreamt of being heroic indie developers, while we humbly developed the games of others, to make a living. It all started with this idea about playing as the (always ready!) shopkeeper of your typical JRPG and, from there, it evolved into something that got inspirations from… Read more

Xbox One Storytellers: Big Bad Wolf on The Council
It’s hard to match the narrative scope and immersive experience that a compelling story-driven game has over other storytelling mediums, allowing players not only to fall into the world of a well-crafted story but to experience it firsthand. These types of games can empower someone with a new perspective or let us live a double-life as a superhero. Narrative-driven games allow us to become someone we’re not, which is perhaps the biggest reason we enjoy these experiences. Now, with the power of Xbox One X, creators can bring us even closer to their vision. With our Xbox One Storytellers… Read more

r/XboxInsiders, Your Voice, and the Birth of Feature Fridays

The Xbox Insider Team has been excited to watch the growth of the new Subreddit launched earlier this month. Not only has the growth surpassed our initial expectations, but the number of continued comments, upvotes, suggestions, reports, and updates has been incredible. To those of you who have been there and participated: Thank you! If you haven’t seen the new social space, head on over and check it out!

Listening is key to helping Xbox deliver a great experience. It is because of that desire to listen that we knew we wanted a place for Xbox Insiders to record their ideas, suggestions, and requests for features that they want to see tested through the Xbox Insider Program, and we encouraged people to share them with us on the subreddit.  With such quick growth, however, a few things became clear to us very early on about how we organize this new space.  Soon after launch, we found the sub filled with these feature requests while other readers told us they wanted a faster way to get to the content that they came for, which included more than just ideas and suggestions.

As a team with a culture of listening, we had an interesting challenge. Some Insiders wanted a place to share and be excited about their ideas. Xbox Staff members were reading, commenting, and envisioning how this would work on the platform. Still other Insiders found it difficult to find the news, information, and conversations that mattered to them. How do we balance each of these needs?

Our partners at r/XboxOne gave us a remarkably elegant and simple solution that fits the goals of encouraging ideas and keeping the main page tidy.  Feature Friday was born. Feature Friday is a weekly thread, open every day of the week and refreshed on Fridays, that serves as the destination for all of the ideas that Xbox Insiders want to see tested through the Xbox Insider Program. Throughout the three weeks of Feature Friday that we’ve hosted already, we’ve collected over 200 distinct comments from Xbox Insiders and shared the top vote-getters from week to week.

This change in the r/XboxInsiders subreddit becomes especially important as we also change the way we utilize UserVoice for ideas and votes.  As you may have already read, we’re taking a much more focused approach to how we collect feedback with UserVoice, in order to give your votes the most impact. On the new Xbox Ideas site, we’re asking you to submit, vote, and help us prioritize what you want to see within specific feature families of things we know we can go work on. Feature Friday becomes a supplement to this, offering a place for you to submit specific suggestions that may not be related to a current Idea Drive campaign. Because we allow and encourage the reposting of suggestions on Feature Friday from week to week, you can carry conversations through a weekly refresh and continue refining concepts.

Xbox Staff are active in both places – checking up on the Idea Drive campaigns that their teams have at xboxideas.uservoice.com and scouring new feature requests and discussions in Feature Friday and the weekly recaps. We’re listening, because it’s key to delivering the experience that you want to have and because it’s a core part of our culture.

New Preview Beta 1806 System Update – 5/30/18

Starting at 6:00 p.m. PDT today, members of the Xbox One Preview Beta Ring will begin receiving the latest Xbox One system update (1806.180524-1920). Read on for more about the features, fixes and known issues in the latest 1806 system update.

New Features:

Group Your Games and Apps

In this build we are enabling the Groups feature for all of the Preview BETA ring.  You’ll need to take the new system update once available, and then perform a full power reboot of the console before Groups will be enabled for you.

With so much content available, fans have asked for more options to organize libraries of games and apps.  Today, we’re introducing a powerful new enhancement to Pins, which we call “Groups.” With Groups, you can create multiple collections of content made up of anything from within My Games & Apps. You can also assign custom names to each Group, organize and order them, and add individual Groups to Home. Groups will appear across My Games & Apps, Home and Guide, so you’ll be able to access your Groups at a moment’s notice. Best of all, Groups are tied to your Xbox Live account, so they will automatically sync across multiple Xbox One consoles. We’ve started you off with a Group that should look very familiar — your Pins! To get started, open the Guide and click on the My Games & Apps button to access your Groups or start adding to them!

Improved Search Functionality

Searching for content is now even easier!  Now pressing the Y button anywhere in the dashboard will bring up the search dialog.  This process is found in many apps, but now you can do it anywhere within the dashboard.  Not seeing enough results for your search? Hit enter or click the “more results” button to view a full page for your search results.

Additional Accessibility Options

The Narrator feature on Xbox One now supports five additional languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, and Dutch. We’re also adding an Australian version of English language for Narrator, so Australian users will no longer have to select US or UK English in order to use Narrator.

Mixer Broadcasting

  • Users can now enable their camera to display full screen while broadcasting.

Experiments

A subset of Xbox Insiders may see some experimental features in addition to what’s listed above.  These are designed to gauge interest and solicit feedback from a more focused group.  For example, some users will be able to share game-specific stats amongst your friends right on your home page.  While others may find greater functionality within Clubs.

As always, thanks to all the Xbox Insiders for your feedback.  Your insight and input is both critical and crucial to making a better Xbox experience for gamers around the world.

Fixes:

GameDVR

  • Fixed the issue in which some users did not receive pop up notifications for Game DVR captures and the guide did not update the number of new captures.

Microsoft Edge

  • Fixed an issue in which switching Microsoft Edge tabs will cause PDF files to disappear from the screen.
  • Stability and performance fixes for Microsoft Edge, specifically when multiple tabs are open.

System Performance

    • Misc. performance fixes in the platform.

Known Issues:

Groups

  • Enabling Groups after taking the update: Groups may not appear for you on first sign in unless you do a full console reboot after taking the system update. This is being fixed in an upcoming build and should only affect having just taken this system update.
  • The Groups tab in My games & apps may not show after sign in even though you can access Groups in Guide, or you may see “This group does not exist” on Home on first sign-in for your existing Groups.  Workaround: Sign in / out to refresh these pages.
  • Some changes might not be reflected when editing Groups between multiple consoles after coming out of connected standby. Sign in/out to fix.
  • Adding the Rewards app to Groups causes you to be unable to access your Groups. This is fixed for an upcoming build.
  • Using special characters in Group names (e.g. &,”) causes issues during Group creation or using the “Add more” flow. Note: emojis are fine. This is being fixed in an upcoming build.
  • You may see issues with Groups if you frequently switch between your non-Preview console and your Preview console. Workaround: Reset your Groups locally on the Preview console through “My games & apps” > Groups, then using the “Reset groups” button at the bottom of the page to resync from the service.

Profile Color

  • Sometimes users may encounter an incorrect Profile color when powering on the console.

Networking

  • Work continues on the stability of the Wi-Fi connectivity.  If you see any issues please report the problems for investigation.

YouTube

  • Some users are encountering an issue where their YouTube account is being signed out whenever they launch the app.
  • Workaround: Uninstall/re-install the app and sign in with your account again.

Oh…Sir! The Hollywood Roast – How (Not) to Anger the Film Industry

Attention movie lovers, this post is a sequel! Before reading, it’s advised to see the previous one here. But in case you didn’t, here’s a piece of unceremonious exposition: previously our hard rock anti-heroes under the band of Vile Monarch managed to get one step closer to world domination by creating a successful video game called Oh…Sir! The Insult Simulator. The Vile Monarch can rest now… or can he? Announcing Oh…Sir! The Hollywood Roast.

The Insult Simulator was a game where you could build absurdly rude sentences against a living or artificial enemy in unlikely conflict scenarios ripping-off inspired by Monty Python. What started as a fun 42-hour game jam experiment, eventually turned into a full-fledged, surprisingly successful game that conquered many platforms (Xbox One being among them) and hearts of millions of YouTube viewers. As we learned from the movie industry, this is when you should make a quickly glued together, direct-to-DVD, cash-grabbing continuation.

Which we didn’t do. Instead, we wanted to – firstly – improve the things we considered lackluster in the previous game and – secondly – refresh the setting, so the insult-based combat can be enjoyed by people with an allergy to tea and crumpets. So, using a movie jargon, it was meant to be more of a spin-off than a total sequel. And yes, all the insolent film-related vocabulary in this post is for a reason, as we ultimately decided to insult the movies and the movie industry.

Oh...Sir! The Hollywood Roast Screenshot

Movie parody seems like the easiest kind of comedy, right? Everyone does that, including movies parodying other movies and millions of bad YouTube videos. But early on we realized there’s gonna be some hurdles. First of all, we didn’t want to get into trouble, being sued by movie studios. People to this day keep asking us, “How could you use Gandalf, Harry Potter, or Deadpool?” The answer is: we couldn’t.

The decision to stay away from real properties was made early on and it was an easy one. But then we realized it’s not a parody if you stop at turning famous characters to Gundalf or Herry Putter – this is a cheap knock-off. So, the idea was to squeeze some comedy out of not having these properties.

The first one to figure out was Gandalf, who at first was meant to be a mix of all wise wizards in the history of fiction. But this didn’t seem to lead to anything particularly funny. Then we made what we called internally “Gandalf The Pink” – Gandalf dressed as an elderly lady. Obviously, he needed a better name and… well, he wore pink and that’s it, the joke’s over.

Oh...Sir! The Hollywood Roast Screenshot

Finally, it turned out that a good idea is to start with a story – what happened to Gandalf after his famous adventures? Maybe he moved to a normal neighborhood  Maybe he still wears a robe for the sake of the old times but thought that a bathrobe would allow him to blend in. This is how The Greasy Wizard was born – if Gandalf was your creepy old neighbor, he would be our man. Goes with a Hobbit-style basement, a full set of Tolkien-inspired innuendos and a booming voice of an amazing British actor Rosko Lewis.

The Greasy Wizard is still one of our favorite characters and he taught us how to build the rest of the cast. The key was to build each of them around a single, clear and hopefully humorous idea. Dirty Potter – what if Harry Potter’s story takes place in the wild west and he’s played by Clint Eastwood? Groan the Destroyinator – what if Conan and Terminator are really the same character? Nosferateen – what if Nosferatu became a vampire as a teenager and is even whinier than the pale dude from “Twilight?” This approach worked for most of the characters, but of course, some turned out better than the rest. Chop Sue E. is one that you might like if you get her, but we didn’t make it easy. She’s a combination of a lot of ideas related to Asian martial arts cinema but would probably find more fans if this mix had a clear dominating part. We did it the right way with Wisecrack – he represents all superhero blockbusters in one Frankenstein body, but with Deadpool as a centerpiece (although his earlier iteration wasn’t as clear – nor as good!).

This basically concludes the relatively unadventurous story of how we managed to get away with roasting Hollywood, while still having a lot of fun. We were sharing this fun across different platforms for a while now and are finally able to bring it to Xbox One. As a special treat for the boxiest of consoles, we added Mixer integration, that lets you watch other people insult each other while messing with the result by voting on the sickest burn.

How Battlefield V Will Depict WWII as You Have Never Seen It Before
Fans of Battlefield, Just recently, we revealed that the setting of the next Battlefield will be World War II – the era where it all began for the series. When the original team and I wanted to create something special back in 1999, WWII was always our first choice. The result was Battlefield 1942. Since then, we’ve visited various eras, but we’ve always longed to return to WWII. For a period, there was a fatigue for this setting’s representation in games, and we didn’t want to recycle the same experiences you’ve already seen. We used our old Battlefield 1 mantra – “untold, unplayed, unseen” – in the development, which liberated us from expectations and… Read more

Build Your Deck of Cards and Crush Your Enemies in Monster Slayers, Available Now on Xbox One
I’m Sim Yih Chun, also known as Nerdook. I spent eight years making web-based games on weekends while working as an electrical engineer, then transitioned into full-time game development. Monster Slayers is my latest game and it combines two of my favorite genres: dungeon crawls and deck-building card games. Unlike card games such as Magic: The Gathering, where selecting the cards that go into your deck happen before the game even begins, deck-building card games usually start you off with a simple starting deck, and as you play, you add more powerful cards to your deck, upgrade your existing cards, or even delete weaker cards to make your deck thinner and increase the odds of… Read more

I Hate Running Backwards Comes Running to Xbox One Today
It’s easy to surround yourself with so much work that you never really take the time to look at your game from a distance. But it’s important to take a moment with the team to see how far you’ve come with the project. Now that we’re at the release date for I Hate Running Backwards, we did just that. We looked back. Our game started out as a regular arcade shoot ’em down. But that wasn’t enough. We wanted to do something different, make something new. We sat down with Damjan Mravunac from Croteam and started brainstorming on this one thing that can make the game feel different but have a familiar feeling about it. We decided to use the one-liner that Sam Stone says in… Read more

New Preview Alpha 1806 System Update – 5/24/18

Starting at 6:00 p.m. PDT today, members of the Xbox One Preview Alpha Ring will begin receiving the latest Xbox One system update (1806.180521-1920). Read on for more about the features, fixes and known issues in the latest 1806 system update.

NEW FEATURE FEEDBACK:

Updates for Groups based on Xbox Insider feedback:

We’re enabling Groups for the rest of Preview Alpha tonight! You’ll want to take the new system update once available and then start trying out Groups if you have not had access to the feature before. There’s also the existing Quest for Preview Alpha to give the team invaluable feedback on your experience using Groups.

How to find the Groups of games and apps feature:

  • [Guide] If you were looking for the Pins button in Guide, instead click on the “My games & apps” button – we’ve combined Groups/Pins with “My games & apps” to put all your stuff in one convenient location for quick access!
  • [My games & apps] If you go into “My games & apps” you will see a new tab on the left for your “Groups” – Pins will be your first Group and you can create more from there
  • [Home] If you go to Home you will still have access to your Pins block and can add other Groups to Home after you create them
  • Note: You may need to sign in/out again if you are not seeing Groups in “My games & apps” or your Pins block loading as expected after your first sign-in. If you do not see your Pins as the first Group, go to “My games & apps” > Groups and choose to reset your local Groups data

Fixes:

Guide

  • Fixed an issue where some users were not seeing the currently active title in the list of Recently used games & apps.

Groups

  • Fixed an issue where the “Add more” or “Create a group” page for Groups would not show all installed content when filtering
  • Fixed some issues related to editing Groups not properly being reflected across multiple consoles that all have Groups enabled

Mixer Broadcasting

  • Fixed an issue in which some users were experiencing issues with USB webcams while broadcasting.
  • Fixed an issue where some users would not see the broadcast overlay or appear as broadcasting in the Guide.

 System Performance

  • Misc. performance fixes in the platform.

Known Issues:

Groups

  • A few users are still experiencing the blank names for Groups. Workaround: You may need to rename these Groups if the local reset did not clear up the issue for you.
  • The Groups tab My games & apps may not show after sign in even though you can access Groups in Guide. Workaround: Sign in / out to refresh these pages.
  • You may see “This group does not exist” on Home on first sign-in for your existing Groups. Workaround: Sign in / out to refresh these pages.
  • Some changes might not be reflected when editing Groups between multiple consoles after coming out of connected standby.  Sign in/out to fix.
  • Titles hidden from Ready to install will show up as an item you can add through the “Add more” or “Create a group” page
  • Choosing “Add to Home” for a game within a group will not add the block to Home
  • You may see issues roaming between a GA console and preview 1806 console. Workaround: Choose to reset your Groups locally to resync from the service.
  • Resetting Groups – local re-sync or reset everywhere: We’ve updated the reset button at the bottom of the Groups page in “My games & apps” so now you can delete your local Groups data and re-sync with the service. This will clear up a lot of issues that may have occurred due to bad states or if data is not showing up as expected. You can still delete from everywhere if you want a fresh start with Groups.
    • You may need to sign in / out for the pages to refresh afterwards.
    • Note: If you are still seeing issues after performing a local reset and/or sign in/out, please make sure to file a bug so the team can investigate

Free to Play MOBA Hyper Universe Coming Exclusively to Xbox One August 7

We are excited to officially announce that Hyper Universe will launch as an Xbox One console exclusive on August 7! Hyper Universe will be available to download and play for free with Xbox Live Gold upon release and starting today, fans of the game can pre-order the Ultimate Hypers Pack, which will instantly unlock all current and future playable Hypers in the game. This pack also includes a total of six Xbox One exclusive Aurora-themed cosmetic skins, and anyone who pre-orders the Ultimate Hypers Pack before August 7 will also receive a seventh limited edition additional bonus skin featuring Aurora’s Arrow for Celine.

Hyper Universe Screenshot

For those unfamiliar with the game, Hyper Universe is a 2D side-scrolling MOBA that combines fast-paced combat with easy to pick-up-and-play controls. At launch, players can choose from a diverse cast of 39 playable characters, called Hypers, each bringing their own unique personalities and skills to the battlefield.

There are six different classes of Hypers to choose from: Tank, Support, Specialist, Striker, Bruiser, and Assassin. Each class receives specific stat bonuses that both complement and amplify their strengths in combat, benefitting you and your teammates. That said, even within the same class, every Hyper has their own fully-developed move set and ability kit, so no matter what playstyle you enjoy you’re sure to find a Hyper that suits you perfectly.

Hyper Universe Screenshot

Hyper Universe has all the gameplay elements players would come to expect from a traditional MOBA, including minions, towers, jungle camps, and (of course) lots of PvP combat. However, both new and veteran MOBA players will find that Hyper Universe also introduces many improvements to the genre as well. Unlike traditional MOBAs, matches in Hyper Universe are fairly fast-paced, lasting roughly 15-20 minutes each. Another one of the unique aspects of Hyper Universe is the noticeably lower learning curve of expectations set for newer players, particularly when compared with other MOBAs. There are no specific laning positions or metas players are required to learn before starting a match, resources are shared when killing monsters within the jungle, and all players start off with a generous learning curve buff to help them seamlessly get accustomed to the game.

Hyper Universe also maps perfectly to the Xbox One controller, resulting in a gaming experience that is (quite literally) easy to pick up and play, while the diverse roster of Hypers simultaneously provides a rewarding and excitingly unique experience each time players queue up and enter a new match.

Hyper Universe will be free to play with Xbox Live Gold and the Ultimate Hypers Pack will be available for $19.99.

For more information about the game, please visit our website at http://hyperuniverse.nexon.net and stay tuned to Xbox Wire.

See you in the battlefield!
