How Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is Better Than Divinity: Original Sin

Divinity: Original Sin launched on Xbox One in 2016 to critical acclaim and many awards as well as nominations, but as we get closer to the release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition let’s talk about some of the differences – and improvements – between the two.

More friends, more chaos, more fun

DOS EE saw a party of two join forces and cleanse Rivellon of evil, but now the hijinks is multiplied by two. In Divinity: Original Sin 2, up to four players take up the task of restoring faith and taking on The Divine Order. It’s the only RPG of its type to offer co-op, let alone four-player co-op. How does this work? Well, drop into a players game or create new characters and begin together. A new party inventory system makes it a lot easier to manage your wears, and you’ll be able to combine your wits with the new journal to milestone your adventures and solve puzzles as a team. Or, more likely, bust that one friend out of jail for pointlessly stealing egg-shells from that one guard they just couldn’t let alone. Or leave them there. They probably deserved it.

Divinity Original Sin II Screenshot

Undead, and Lizards, and Dwarves, oh my!

It’s fun to roleplay humans, as a human you’re doing it right now. Me too, as it happens. Regardless, Rivellon is a rich and rife world, with a lot of races to play in D:OS 2. Now, you can create a Lizard, Elf, Human, Dwarf, and an Undead variant of each. We’ve 6 Origin characters to choose from, each with their own stories and dialogue options. These new races (DOS EE only allowed you to play as a human) each have their own racial traits. For example, the Undead can pick locks with their bony fingers. Elves can eat the flesh of fallen enemies and absorb their memories and learn new skills, etc. D:OS 2 takes place in a world that reacts to who you are, and what you do. Again, just like real life! But I don’t recommend eating rotting human flesh out in London or whatever.

You can still talk to animals, but let’s have a chat with a ghost

D:OS EE introduced trans-species conversational narratives into the world of gaming, if you had the Pet-Pal ability. Of course, this remains in the sequel. This time, you can also talk to ghosts! Without any spoilers, there’s a moment in the game where you might accidentally(?) create a lot of them. If you do, have a chat and find out how they feel about that. It’s the least you can do. As an elf, if ethereal beings aren’t your thing, you’re more than welcome to gain insights from a severed head. Two heads are better than one, afterall.

Divinity Original Sin II Screenshot

Dynamic music that changes with you

The music in D:OS 2 is defined by you. The soundtrack to your journey adapts based on a few things: the instrument you pick in character creation, and the actions you take throughout the game. From four instruments, the music in combat will adapt heroically or depressingly depending on the actions you take. Heroic fight? The party will know. That cello will sound more predominant, and your friends will know it was you who electrocuted that one guy into the netherrealm. Losing a fight? You’ll hear it before the final blow lands. The instruments dynamically weave in and out of the music seamlessly. Now, in the Definitive Edition the Lady Vengeance ship will play your personal tune.

A new game engine enhances everything from visuals to mechanics

D:OS 2 jumped to an entirely new engine, including the new patented (probably, maybe) A.I 2.0. Enemies in D:OS 2 know all the tricks. They can be as creative as you are. The Definitive Edition improves even further on this, with a new version of the physics engine bringing even more chaos to the game. Now, enjoy things like height advantages in combat, as well as PBR (Physically-Based Rendering) bringing the Divinity series into the next-gen for best-in-class visuals on the Xbox One, with HDR and 4K.

Divinity Original Sin II Screenshot

These are just 5 of the major changes between Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition, and the new Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition. Not only are there dozens of other major changes between the two, there are thousands of changes between the original release of D:OS 2 and its new Definitive Edition version you’ll be getting your hands on. At Larian, we’ve worked hard to improve the game based on player feedback despite its universal critical acclaim, in hopes that you thoroughly enjoy this, the very literally named Definitive Edition of Divinity: Original Sin 2.

A Game Where Words Destroy: The Path of Motus Is Now Available on Xbox One, Proceeds Going To Charity

Hey everyone! My name is Michael Hicks, and I’m one half of the development team for The Path of Motus! After three long years of development, I’m excited to announce that it’s finally available on Xbox One! The game explores the psychology behind bullying, and features a verbal combat system where your words have the power to destroy. I’m also excited to announce that we’ve partnered with The Cybersmile Foundation, a leading non-profit that helps thousands of bullying victims each year through their support lines. The game costs $14.99, and 10% of all sales will be donated to Cybersmile.

In the game, a village of goblins has been trapped inside a mysterious forest; anyone who attempts to leave returns hopeless and defeated. Determined to break new ground, a young goblin named Motus plans to build a series of bridges through the forest. However, his perseverance will soon be tested, as he meets bullies that use their own words to stop him. Playing as Motus requires you to have resilience, and lets you explore the deeper reasons for why people resort to aggression.

Path of Motus Screenshot

When I was younger, I was interested in what made bullies act so aggressive. As time went on I began to befriend some of them, and learned they had either been bullied themselves earlier in life, had really bad family lives, or were just simply jealous of other people; I kept all of this in mind as I designed the game. As Motus gradually grows from a child to an adult, you’ll get to explore the motivations of the characters you meet, and I expect you’ll have some surprising moments in the process! I feel the discussion around this topic often ignores the root causes of bullying, so hopefully this game lets us see how our own actions potentially contribute to this issue.

As a game designer, I like using gameplay to express specific ideas. I love games that focus on story, but I also love games that utilize interactivity because that’s what makes games unique! I’ve made a huge effort to marry the story and gameplay in The Path of Motus. In fact, many puzzles in this game are used specifically to express what Motus is thinking or feeling! These puzzles are called “Thought Doors”, and you come across them during various times in the story. While they look and behave like normal puzzles, the ideas behind how they’re solved is the key to how this works! Imagine trying to figure out what someone is thinking, but using gameplay to express it. Unlike many other story-based games, the coolest moments in The Path of Motus come across nonverbally as you play.

Path of Motus Screenshot

I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity to make this game. It means the world to see people play something I’ve made, and luckily this game has given me several opportunities to give back to some of you. Motus‘ charity involvement isn’t the only way I hope to give back: I’ve launched a Youtube channel that shows people how to make their own games! At the end of my series, viewers will be able to make games for platforms such as Xbox One. It’s all free, and the programming skills I teach can be used in a wide variety of professions. Hopefully, I can pass on the joy of game development to people who need it. You can find these videos on our website here: http://pathofmotus.com

Finally, I’d like to thank the following people for making this game possible: the artist on this game Gonçalo Antunes, the awesome ID@Xbox team, Tom Spilman and the MonoGame team, the XNA community (rest in peace), my parents, my real life friends for the moral support, and of course my online friends I’ve met playing video games over the years! Thanks everyone! Don’t forget to play the game RIGHT NOW on Xbox One: click here to view the Xbox store page.

The Locations of Vermintide 2, Available Now on Xbox One and Xbox Game Pass

After months of hard work, we’re proud to have finally brought Chaos to the Xbox One with the release of Warhammer: Vermintide 2. It’s a 4-player co-op action game designed to be played together with friends in a fun and challenging setting. The game is set in a vast universe with rich history which has greatly influenced how the game looks and feels.

Vermintide 2 takes place in and around the fortress town of Helmgart, nestled in the mountain range the Grey Mountains, situated on the border between the Empire and Bretonnia during the End Times, an age in which the world is becoming overrun with various blights seeking chaos and destruction upon all living things.

Vermintide 2 Screenshot

The first Vermintide game took place in Übersreik, a town which consisted mostly of dark and gritty places. As we were deciding the direction we wanted to take Warhammer: Vermintide 2 in, we concluded that we wanted more variety to the environments the players could visit.

Righteous Stand

This is one of the very first maps that we revealed in Vermintide 2. The main goal was to wow our community with a bright level, strikingly different from our darker themes in the previous game. Before Helmgart fell, it was heavily fortified with guard towers and cannons lining the top of the walls surrounding the city. Up on the ramparts you can see the entire city vista, which was also something we really wanted to show off to our fans.

Vermintide 2 Screenshot

Hunger in the Dark

The story of this mission is centered around an abandoned mine, from which its workers had suddenly started disappearing – leaving behind no trace but gnawed bones. As you progress further into the mine you find that is in fact a troll cave, in which Chaos cultists transform regular trolls into Chaos trolls.

Vermintide 2 Screenshot

A lot of inspiration was taken from older mines from the 19th centurynd even older, and the end product became a mix of the two. The general theme of this environment was to create a dark and claustrophobic space, where the darkness of the cave lingers in silent threat of what may lurk further within.

Empire in Flames

This map takes place in the city of Ussingen, a town known for its sharp Red Cheese. The city has already been razed and plundered by the time you get there, consumed entirely by the forces of the Dark Pact.

Vermintide 2 Screenshot

Empire in Flames is a visual representation of the destruction the forces of Chaos intend to deliver to the world and the true evil that they can perform. Using elements such as smoke, collapsed buildings, and a near colorless palette brought the whole impression of the map together.

Thanks for reading! We hope that you will have as much fun with the game as we had making it. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is out now on Xbox One and is available on the Microsoft Store.
