gamescom 2018: 5 New Features Coming to Trials Rising

Ubisoft’s Trials franchise has built a legion of dedicated fans who come for the best physics-based motorcycling in the business and stay for the grueling challenge of inching past pals on the game’s online leaderboards.  All of that excruciating goodness is intact in Rising, but developer RedLynx has gone the extra mile by enhancing their latest bike with several new upgrades. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and check out what the next entry in the world’s most explosive racing series has in store.

Unreal Tracks, Real Locations

While the core game mechanics are largely unchanged – you still gas, brake, and lean back and forth to fling your bike over gaps and nudge it up steep inclines – the tracks in Trials Rising are somehow bigger and badder than ever. Rising’s single-player campaign takes players to a slew of insane, over-the-top-tracks based on famous real-world locations like Mount Everest, Yellowstone National Park, and the Pyramids of Giza. Bunny hop up an in-construction Eiffel Tower, if you dare, though our current fave is the “Mile High” track. Featuring ridiculously slick sequences yanked straight out of a “Mission: Impossible” film, this one sees you escaping from a cargo plane while it plummets to the ground. Yeah.

A Word from Your Sponsors

To be sure, simply reaching the end of each devious track is its own victory. But to add incentive and increase the challenge, various sponsors will offer optional contracts. These may include simple requests, like getting a Bronze medal, to more hardcore challenges, like passing a particularly rough level without restarting at a checkpoint. If reaching the top of an Egyptian pyramid isn’t daunting enough, try doing it while landing six front flips.

Gear Up, Gear Out

Cash isn’t just a point total. Rising goes much bigger with its customization suite, letting players earn and equip a wealth of cosmetic items, including helmets, shirts, pants, boots, and jackets. Players can also choose a gender, tinker with bike skins, and tweak various animations, though for serious design types, the real treat is sharing creations with other players via a new “Gear Central” online hub. Dig a design? Download it and make it your own. That goes for tracks, too, as the franchise’s potent track editor will make a return.

Challenge the World

In addition to local and online multiplayer races, Rising ups the ante with a new Challenger Mode that expands the game’s famed asynchronous multiplayer. Instead of just taking down your leaderboard buddies, you’ll now get automatically matched up against random, similarly-skilled players from around the world and nab cool rewards for beating a few in a row. Likewise, other random players may wind up racing against your own ghost data. Set sweet times to haunt the world.

Tandem Tomfoolery

Are two heads really better than one? You can test this theory on Trial Rising’s diabolically fun tandem bike. Two local players can hop on this motorcycle monstrosity and attempt to co-operatively steer it through any track. Communication is key, as the players share control over the bike. Gassing, braking, and leaning must be done in tandem or the bike may not respond. Sounds extra tough for newbies, but it’s rip-roaringly fun for vets.

Trials Rising crashes into the Xbox One in February 2019, but those itching for an early whiff of its gasoline-fueled insanity can sign up for the free beta, which kicks off September 13.

Revealing Life is Strange 2 and Uncovering the Clues Left in Captain Spirit

Life is Strange 2 has been revealed and you can find out everything you need to know from this very first trailer. Life is Strange 2 features an entirely new cast of characters, a new storyline and yes, a new power…

The main characters this time are brothers Sean and Daniel Diaz. Sean, at 16 years of age, is embroiled in the usual high school intricacies you might expect at that age. His younger brother Daniel looks up to Sean and his friends while remaining playfully cheeky. The two live in Seattle with their father Esteban, who works as a car mechanic.

The brother’s peaceful life, however, is struck with sudden tragedy and they are forced to flee, leaving their home and everything they have behind. They must now make a run for their family’s home town of Puerto Lobos, Mexico while being pursued by the police and haunted by questions of what happened and what is to come.

Earlier this year, we unveiled The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit during the Microsoft conference at E3. This free demo contained details of what Life is Strange 2 is about, but in true Life is Strange fashion, it contained a number of red herrings alongside the nuggets of truth!

Life is Strange 2 Screenshot

Life is Strange 2 Screenshot

Spoilers for both Captain Spirit and Life is Strange 2 ahead, so turn back now if you haven’t yet played Captain Spirit or would prefer to go into Life is Strange 2 with as little information as possible!

The first of the above-mentioned truth-nuggets is a newspaper excerpt you can find in Chris’ house. It mentions riots and protests that continue to mount in Seattle following the unexplained deaths of a local man and a police officer. This is, in fact, the incident we teased a few weeks ago. How exactly it plays out is something you’ll discover when you start Life is Strange 2 as it is also the point of origin for the game’s story. This is the reason why Sean and Daniel must go on the run and the catalyst for all that follows.

Life is Strange 2 Screenshot

Life is Strange 2 Screenshot

Another hint found in Captain Spirit occurs at the very end of Chris’ adventure when, after falling down from his tree-house, he sees two boys in the neighboring back garden. Though The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit ends before they can introduce themselves, these are actually Sean and Daniel. Observant fans have already pieced together that the dashcam footage shown in the teaser is from October 28, 2016, while Chris’ adventure appears to take place around Christmas time of the same year. This means that Chris encounters the brothers after they are forced to flee Seattle…

When we first envisioned Life is Strange 2, we saw that the possibilities that Life is Strange can offer us across an entire universe of storytelling, one that is built through weaving individual storylines that are compelling and immersive. Captain Spirit was a small glimpse into such a universe and Life is Strange 2 will only continue to expand upon this idea. We can’t wait for you to join us for this journey when Episode 1 of Life is Strange 2 releases on September 27 on Xbox One.

New Preview Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead 1810 Update – 8/18/18

Starting at 2:00 p.m. PDT today, members of the Xbox One Preview Alpha – Skip Ahead and Preview Alpha rings will begin receiving the latest Xbox One system update (1810.180816-1920). Learn more about the new features in development for 1810 here, and read on for a list of fixes and known issues in this 1810 system update.

Important Build Notes

Shopping Cart Update

Thanks so much for your feedback on the new Shopping Cart feature in the Store! We’ve heard your feedback and are now taking Shopping Cart offline to make fixes and improvements. Shopping Cart will return to the Store in the next few weeks.

File a Bug shortcut on the Console

Trying to file a bug and your controller is dead – plug in a keyboard and hit Windows Key + F to file a bug! This will work when your controller input isn’t working or when you cannot get to power center.

Broadcast Everything

With the latest update, Xbox users will be able to broadcast not just gameplay but the entire Xbox One console experience to Mixer. Users can turn on this setting in the broadcasting tab in Guide.

This setting is always disabled at the end of the broadcast and the user must explicitly enable it. This feature will prevent unnecessary pause screens on Mixer as the user transitions from one game to another.

The broadcast during this time will behave very much like a capture card with a few exceptions.

  1. Non-game audio is not included in the broadcast.
  2. HEVC applications like Netflix and YouTube will terminate the broadcast.

When this setting is enabled everything you see, your audience will see: your Home screen, the guide, your game, notifications, what you’re typing, and more.

Be careful not to broadcast personal information such as passwords and credit card numbers!

Double check your privacy settings

  • To keep your email from showing on Home, go to Settings and choose Account > Sign-in, security & passkey, and uncheck Show on Home.
  • To hide notifications, go to Preferences > Notifications and uncheck Notification banners on.

Fixes:

Avatars

  • Several reliability fixes to the Avatar subsystem.

Clubs

  • Added the ability to select a club channel if you share to a club which has more than one feed channel.

Game Pass Twist

  • Improved personalization to the Game Pass Twist and added a new Deals button to the Twist to enable quick launching to the Store.

Groups

  • Fixed an issue in which some users were seeing blank tiles after changing Filter settings.

My Games and Apps

  • Just Dance 2018  – We have fixed the issue that the Alphanumeric Virtual Keyboard was not working in this title.
  • Fixed the issue in which the Text was cut off in the download progress of an app or game.
  • Fixes to the DirecTV NOW app to resolve recorded content freezing.

Settings – Network Statistics

  • We have fixed the issue in which Detailed Network Statistics was showing no data.

System Performance

  • This build has performance fixes that resolve the poor console performance with the dashboard/home stuttering when waking up from instant on.
  • Various localization fixes in this build.

Virtual Keyboard (VK)

  • We have fixed the Japanese VK to include the Missing “ー” button.

 3D Blu-ray

  • Fixes are in this build to fix 3D blu-rays to function correctly.

Known Issues:

Avatars

  • We are aware that some Avatars are choosing to point several parts of their anatomy (feet & hands) in different directions or growing a beard out of the eyes!.  Please file feedback when you see this.
  • It can take up to 10 seconds to view an Avatar on the profile screen the first time after your console has flashed.

Audio

  • We are aware that some users are experiencing issues with headsets with the mic not working.  Please ensure that your controller is running the latest Firmware (Settings – Kinect & Devices – Devices & Accessories). Please file feedback when you see this.

My Games and Apps

  • EA Access  App – We are aware that the EA Access app will crash when navigating in the app and become unresponsive.
  • Shudder App  – We are aware that the Shudder app may become unresponsive.

Microsoft Edge

  • Microsoft Edge crashes for some users at random times.
  • The cursor may disappear when exiting and re-entering the app.
    • Workaround: Press Y when re-entering the app to make the cursor re-appear

OneGuide

  • Sometimes users may encounter stuttering when launching straight into Oneguide after the console is turned on from Instant on. Please file feedback when you see this.
  • Here is a workaround to resolve temporarily:
    1. Navigate Home via the Guide
    2. Quit OneGuide manually from the Home screen
    3. Wait 15-30 secs
    4. Launch any other streaming app (Netflix, HBOGO, YouTube)
    5. One launched, play a video
    6. Once video begins playing (it should play normally) exit the app and relaunch OneGuide

Profile Color

  • Sometimes users may encounter the incorrect Profile color when powering on the console.

Virtual Keyboard

  • We are aware that some characters appear incorrectly when using the Virtual Keyboard in conjunction with a chatpad.  Workaround : Disconnect the chatpad.

Team Xbox Spotlight: Yifei, the Xbox Insider Summer Intern

Summer is always a special time at Microsoft, as the company is joined by over a thousand interns from all over the world. The internship program not only allows students the ability to show off and develop their skills throughout the 12-week program but also allows them to consider whether they’d like to pursue a full-time career with the company after graduation. Interning at Microsoft isn’t just about the daily grind, however, as plenty of fun activities are planned for the interns, such as special presentations by executives and even a huge concert at the end of the summer.

Aside from getting to experience what it’s like to work at Microsoft firsthand, one of the coolest things about the internship program is the opportunity it allows students to contribute to projects that Microsoft and Xbox users everywhere may one day interact with. For example, you may notice a feature developed by our Xbox Insider Team intern, Yifei, in the Xbox Insider Hub very soon.

Xbox Insider Ring Dialog Box

Xbox Insider Ring Dialog Box

This feature, which Yifei spent her 12-week internship working to build, allows users to make more informed decisions when selecting a system update ring or switching between rings in the Xbox Insider Hub. No longer will Xbox Insiders have to wonder whether selecting a ring will trigger an update or factory refresh, as this information will now be visible within the dialog box used to change system update rings.

Learn more about Yifei and the cool new feature she developed below!

What’s it been like interning for the Xbox Insider Team this summer, and what did you know about the program prior to your internship?

To be honest, I didn’t know anything about the Xbox Insider Program prior to my internship. But after I joined the team, I wanted to come back full time within the first week of my internship. Everyone on the team is so nice, and I can feel that they are truly passionate about their work. Not only was the team passionate about their work, but we also had a lot of fun as a team when we took part in morale events – special shout out to Anna for taking me for boba and being an amazing mentor! Everyone on the team cares a lot about the Xbox Insider Program and really acts with a sense of responsibility for the program and the people in it.

I still remember being around for the announcement of the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which occurred early in my internship, and knowing that Xbox as a team is focused on accessibility also makes me want to return in the future.

Tell us a bit about the feature you developed. What led you to start the work? What was most challenging or interesting about it to you?

The feature I developed helps Insiders make more informed decisions when switching rings. For example, when selecting a system update ring, you might be wondering what build you’ll receive, whether you’ll have to update or go through a factory refresh, or if an update is coming and when. My feature provides information on all those things.

I was sort of handed this feature to work on in the first week of my internship because my manager and mentor knew that I didn’t have much prior knowledge of the Xbox Insider Program and its intricacies. I felt a lot of pressure at first, but everyone on the team really helped me a lot. It was also surprising that Microsoft trusts their interns to do work with real impact on the product. What was challenging was learning the complex systems and services behind the Xbox Insider Program, and it’s really amazing to me that this feature will now be available to all Xbox Insiders!

Do you have a favorite videogame or are you playing anything currently?

Fortnite!

Your internship just ended, and we’re sad to see you go but hope you enjoyed your time on the Xbox Insider Team! How did this summer benefit your skills and understanding of software engineering?

I had to make many software engineering decisions that I wouldn’t have had to make for a school project. For example, real software services can have randomness and unexpected failures. I had to learn how to judge the severity of various issues and determine the proper error handling strategy for each one to provide the best user experience. The second thing that I’ve learned is that learning from others is important. My teammates took the time to explain why they do things a certain way to me, and I learned so much from them.

What advice would you give to other students interested in interning for Microsoft?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It sounds like a cliché, but I really do feel like that’s the best advice I could give besides talking to people from your team and different teams. Share your opinions, and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions so you can correctly understand things because software engineering isn’t easy.

If you are a high school, college, or graduate student and you’re interested in learning more about a Microsoft internship, visit careers.microsoft.com to learn more, or look for Microsoft at a college campus recruiting event!

10 Insider Tips for Airheart’s Colorful Airplane World Above the Clouds

In Airheart, your goal is to get to the top of the skies and catch the legendary skywhale. To succeed, you’ll need to battle pirates and drones, catch lots of fish and most importantly: stay alive!

You play as Amelia, a young pilot, and fisherwoman wishing to reach the edge of the world and make the big catch. But since you’re living on the poor underside of Granaria, a flying city in the clouds, your way to the top will be especially hard.

I played a couple of hundred hours of Airheart during development and I think I’ve got some nice tips for you for making the life of a fisherwoman easier.

Don’t shoot the friendlies, or don’t be caught doing it

On the first few levels, there are a lot of neutral NPCs, fishermen and -women that are just making a living by catching fish. They are not armed, so it may be tempting to shoot them down for loot, but I’d advise against it. Shooting them will call the police, and they are not kidding around. There is no prison or fine for being hostile to the friendlies but being shot down and thus losing all your catches is probably punishment enough.

Better safe than sorry

It’s easy to get greedy with all the fish and loot, but at one point you must return to Granaria to craft some new weapons or buy better gear. Lots of times I got shot down because I just wanted to catch the next extremely valuable fish while already having low health. So, this one is very important and will help you a lot: when you see the warning of low health on the screen, return back home as soon as possible. Just do it. You’ll thank me.

Listen well when looking for a big catch

While the legendary skywhale is at the very top of Airheart’s world, there may be smaller whales in the skies between Granaria and the top. But how can you find one? I can tell you that there will not always be one of them flying around, but if there is, you’ll hear it, so listen well!

A little boost would be nice

There is a fixed speed to most of the airplanes in Airheart, but there are times when you want to fly a little bit faster – for example when you want to catch the speedy valuable skyfish. Do you see that weapon on top of your airplane? How about using its recoil? Of course, some guns give you a little bit more of it and some none. Personally, I use the machine gun for this all the time.

Good fisherwomen use the harpoon

Fast fish are maybe too fast for your airplane, but just use your harpoon and they will not be able to escape you. Also, when you get to the higher layers of Airheart’s world there will be much bigger fish which can’t be caught by just flying into them – but if you harpoon & drag them down to Granaria, you’ll get a nice reward.

A harpoon is not only made for fishing: Part 1

At the beginning of Airheart, your airplane will only have a small and pretty weak Bolt Caster as its main weapon. But it also has a very useful tool: the harpoon! While you can’t destroy enemies with it, it can make it a lot easier. Small enemies care stunned when harpooned and become very vulnerable. If you’re returning to Granaria with them, you can drag them down and will get part of their weapon as material for crafting!

A harpoon is not only made for fishing: Part 2

While most of the airplanes in Airheart are always in motion, the harpoon can be used to slow down the momentum. Whenever I need a moment to figure things out or I want to take a clean, precise shot at enemies, I just harpoon a rock and stand still. Be aware that this will also make you an easier target for your enemies!

The additional skins for the airplanes are very pricey, but…

If you’re short on cash, but really want one of the expensive skins for your airplane, you could try to shoot down some of your competition. Sometimes you’ll see airplanes which look like yours flying around. These are neutral NPCs we call Fortune Hunters. They have the same goal as you but are usually better equipped. There’s a small chance you’ll get a nice skin from them as loot if you ask them nicely…

Take a photo if you’re feeling lost

Sometimes during playtesting, we used this little trick when we badly needed to find the next portal but forgot where it was; taking a photo with the photo mode. It sounds strange but once you try it, you’ll understand.

Don’t get too greedy

There is a lot of fish in Airheart’s skies, and you could catch all of them for a lot of money. But when you do this, like in real life, there probably won’t be any new fish anymore – which means no new money. Make sure to let some fish life on every layer to be able to get more money on your next run. Personally, I make sure to not to fish more than about half of the fish on any layer to have enough fish every time.

With these tips, you should be good on your way to become a legend and get lots of gear and money in the world above the clouds. Good fishing and good luck with catching the skywhale! Pick up Airheart today on Xbox One here on the Microsoft Store.

The Two Sides of Space Hulk: Tactics, Coming Soon to Xbox One

Warhammer 40,000 returns to Xbox One with Space Hulk: Tactics, an enhanced adaption of the classic turn-based strategy board game, coming October 9, and now available for pre-order on the Microsoft Store. In Space Hulk: Tactics, Marine Terminators face off against merciless alien Genestealers in the tight confines of a space hulk, an ancient amalgamation of starships, smashed together over eons to form a deadly maze and function as a breeding ground for aliens and worse. Traps, locked doors, malfunctioning turrets, and more bar the way.

It was vitally important to us to give you equal options on both sides of the fight in Space Hulk: Tactics. For example, both Terminators and Genestealers have unique, interconnected but separate single-player campaigns that take place on the Forsaken Doom space hulk which has been floating between the stars for years. Both allow you to decide the progress of your squad or swarm, customizing their capabilities and picking their path through the hulk, choosing which missions to undertake.

Space Hulk: Tactics Screenshot

Space Hulk: Tactics Screenshot

This was important too for gameplay. The baseline rules of the Space Hulk board game, beloved by us and you since the original release in 1989, were kept in place. Every successful attack is lethal, Terminators keeping Genestealers at bay with their ranged weapons, often doomed if they end up in close combat. We wanted to build upon these rules and see if we could add a few wrinkles to the formula.

We did this with the card system. You start each game with a deck based on which units you have chosen to field, and what you’ve equipped them with. Some elements are unlocked in the campaign as you progress, but everything is available in your first skirmish and multiplayer games. These cards can be played for their effect or converted for unique benefits depending on your side. Terminators get more Action Points, allowing them to move further and do more, while Genestealers can get extra units to spawn onto the field.

In this way, combat is completely asymmetrical. Terminators start with five units and a variety of possible objectives, from simply escaping to activating specific consoles or destroying whole rooms with a flame weapon. The Genestealers are an endless swarm, using their cards to create radar blips that contain as many as three (or as few as zero) individual units, able to emerge whenever you like. Your strategies, tactics, and plans will have to be completely different depending on which side you choose to take on.

Jammed weapons and uncovered angles are deadly to the Terminators, but they are almost unstoppable when working as a full, cooperative squad. Units like the Librarian can use special powers to guarantee kills or make deadly area attacks, while heavy weapon bearers bring extreme firepower – which may explode if pushed too hard.

Cards gave us another opportunity to expand this and give the Genestealers their own special units, not present in the original board game. They have far different powers than the Terminators, to keep their unique identity intact as the more melee and swarm-focused of the two sides. Targeting blips of certain sizes will allow you replace their payload of normal Genestealers with one of these divergent strains – slower and hardier, or capable of passing through vents at frightening speeds, or even the mighty Broodlord which can spawn new Genestealers around it.

We’re very excited to see what players, those who have a history with Space Hulk and new fans, think of both sides when Space Hulk: Tactics arrives on Xbox One. Pre-order today to get ready to fight on October 9, 2018.

Surreal Sci-Fi Story Adventure Elea is Available for Pre-Order on Xbox One

Hello, stargazers and supernovas! Elea is a surreal space adventure inspired by classic science-fiction literature and we’re over the moon to announce that Episode 1 of Elea will release soon and is now available for pre-order on Xbox One.

Elea is an exploration game that revolves around space scientist and expecting mother, River Elea Catherine Jones. You assume the role of Elea and progress through the story by interacting with your environment and solving puzzles. In this first episode of the trilogy, you get to know Elea and start to unravel her mind-blowing family story.

In 2073, Earth was struck by a horrid childhood disease. To save humanity from extinction, volunteers from around the globe boarded the interstellar spaceship Pilgrimage and set out to colonize a recently discovered exoplanet called Solace. Shortly upon arrival, all communication was cut off and nothing was heard from the Pilgrimage and its crew since.

13 years later, Elea joins a recovery mission to discover the fate of the Pilgrimage, but most importantly that of her missing husband who was an important member of the ship’s crew. This is where you enter the story and embark on an interstellar journey through sensational three-dimensional space settings, varying from detailed spaceship interiors to breathtakingly beautiful panoramic scenes. Along with this peculiar trip through outer space, you revisit memories and face phenomena beyond human understanding

Elea is developed by a tiny Bulgarian game studio with massive ambition. The studio is called Kyodai, which means brothers in Japanese. This name was picked because each team member is a multi-layered person and they all highly value working together and helping each other. Their main inspiration for the game came from the books of classic sci-fi authors such as Stanislaw Lem, Arthur C. Clarke, and Frank Herbert. They see the narrative they created for Elea as the epitome of everything they like in existing science-fiction stories and characters. They wrote the story with the idea of telling something that is fresh and unexpected, but at the same time familiar to a certain degree. Additionally, they were inspired by the conflicts that often drive interesting stories in books, movies and of course games, and carried this through in the story of Elea.

Kyodai love first-person games and believe that they have the potential to be the next big thing regarding storytelling. They wanted Elea to bring real innovation to the first-person genre and to have a uniquely distinctive element besides an exceptional narrative. They noticed that most story-driven first-person adventures offered just one main distinct location with one visual style and tone. Inspired by their love of old-school video games they decided to take a completely different approach to the genre. They took on the challenge of telling Elea’s story in a style like that of old-school platformers, where there is a lot of variation between different levels. In old-school platformers you can go from a lava level to a snow level followed by a jungle level and an underwater level. They wanted Elea to reflect this variation in surroundings as well, to make the game feel like an enormous journey through time and space.

The developers describe Elea as a game that takes the player on the deeply personal journey of a woman whose life is marked by loss, grief, and self-accusation in the aftermath of a global pandemic that turned her youngest boy into a raging psychopath. By putting the character up against events and phenomena which are beyond human grasp, Elea aims to defy the conventional notions of personal accountability, choice, and the meaning of life. It is a story about our fragility as a species, about finding solace through surrender. The team asked themselves the following questions: At the edge of an evolutionary precipice, will we be held back by our emotional burdens or will we manage to let go? Do our mortal joys and grievances matter when the great forces of the universe are at play?

Elea can easily be assigned to the increasingly popular category of experience-type products, where storytelling and emotionally touching moments are paramount for the player enjoyment. However, we want to emphasize that Elea is not just a relaxing walk in beautifully crafted environments with psychedelic visual sequences.

The game mechanics heavily depend on the total interaction with the surrounding world and there are puzzles to solve. In some scenes, the player can produce an event by just looking at something, without any additional physical interaction. Finally, we can assure you that, in some specific situations, Elea can die.

Now it’s time for you to enjoy the finished product and venture out on an interstellar discovery of your own. See you in space!
